Editor’s Note 2018 Security 50 Companies to Drive Another Wave of Growth in Security This marks the 16th year that a&s has released its Security 50 ranking. Over the past 16 years, a&s has reported on both the security industry’s most glorious and challenging times, along with its annual rankings. In the years following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, the industry almost reached its highest growth. However, there was only moderate growth from 2007 to 2009, during the great recession in the U.S. and then Europe. At present, the global security industry, especially the video surveillance segment, has maintained an average growth of 7 to 9 percent every year, according to the analysis of multiple researchers. In this year’s Security 50 ranking, we recognize the achievements of video surveillance companies, such as Hikvision Digital Technology, Dahua Technology, Axis Communications, Avigilon, Milestone Systems and VIVOTEK, who were able to maintain double-digit growth and gross margins in 2017 despite the huge pressure from camera price reductions year after year. Because of their continuous efforts in creating solutions and providing value-added services for multiple vertical users, we can foresee substantial growth in the future. Next, we can probably expect AI to reinvigorate growth and create another peak period for security. The growth forecast for access control companies remains strong with continued demand from office buildings, hotels and homes, as well as a strong push from technology trends — notably the migration from mechanical to electronic locks, mobile keys, and the integration of access control systems with other systems to manage physical and also digital access. The Security 50 ranking also shows that multinational conglomerates, like Assa Abloy and Allegion, have also maintained their organic growth in 2016 and 2017. Finally, we would like to point out that certain companies were not able to participate in this year’s ranking due to multiple factors. The a&s editorial team has tried its best to provide the most complete ranking possible. We hope the ranking can provide marketers a quick overview of the current global security industry. We urge readers not to overinterpret the figures, but rather focus on how the top 50 companies were able to stand out from the market. We thank all the companies that were willing to share their financial reports with us. Enjoy the rankings!

OSSA to Push OS, App Store for Cameras Having a standardized operating system that can enable users to expand their camera’s functionality via downloadable apps has become key. BY William Pao

hat was one of the reasons behind the establishment of the Open Security and Safety Alliance (OSSA), whose founding members are Bosch, Hanwha Techwin, Milestone Systems, Pelco and VIVOTEK. “The main purpose of OSSA is to bring together companies in the security and safety industries which understand the need to innovate and drive the solutions which customers need and want,” said Hartmut Schaper, CEO of SAST, a whollyowned subsidiary of Bosch; and Phil Doyle, President of OSSA. “Such solutions include being able to customize functionality of their devices (initially cameras) through the download of applications and services, but also agreeing on, and following, a more standardized approach to some of the big challenges we see today such as cybersecurity and personal privacy.” A key to this is the development of an industry-specific operating

system that allows downloads of apps to cameras and access of cameras to various solutions or services that the users are looking for. SAST is tasked with developing the OS which Schaper and Doyle said will stand out from competitors. “The OS is based on Android Open Source Project (AOSP) but is evolved and hardened by SAST to meet the needs of our market. We believe this OS will be very attractive to application developers inside and outside the industry due to standardized APIs that allow apps to be developed independently of a specific camera type, and it also offers a number of benefits for remote update and management which haven’t been possible previously,” they said. “SAST is working closely with a number of app developers today to identify what the ‘killer apps’ will likely be in the future, but initially we’d expect there to be many of the current type of analytics solutions we know of already, for instance license plate recognition, object or person identification/ counting and so on,” Schaper and Doyle said. “Applications can

standard in security remains to be seen, but Schaper and Doyle have nevertheless expressed confidence. “We believe there will be those that use the OS and those that don’t. Those that do will contribute to, and benefit from, the constantly-evolving solutions that we envisage. As the number of connected devices, innovative new applications and customized services increases, so this direction will become more and more attractive. How to Define the “Smart” in Smart Buildings With the concept of smart buildings becoming ubiquitous and solutions becoming increasingly adopted in this sector, a major topic of debate is how to define “smartness.” BY Prasanth Aby Thomas, Freelancer

I

n a recent blog post, Memoori addressed this issue, as it brought together opinions of experts in an attempt to explain what “smartness” constituted. Reinhold Wieland, Business Development Manager at Connecting Buildings, had in a recent interview noted that the concept was more about integration. “There is a lack of definition on what a smart building is,” Wieland was quoted in the post. “I would say ‘smart’ is a combination of smart infrastructure and building automation, real-time data, seamless integration, and the real ‘smart’ comes with workflow engines when the building integrates with people in an intelligent way. Based on the Rogers Innovation Uptake Bell Curve, I feel the industry’s maturity is somewhere below the first 10 percent, but every app or specific technology has its own curve. Perhaps it would be better to grade it on a scale of 1 to 10 or with a star rating. I would say the average of buildings would be on a rating of 3, but many would rank much lower.” A separate report from Memoori indicated that one of the factors fueling the growth in the commercial space is demand from the emerging generation of employees who need options like remote working and coworking. Wieland further suggested that such evolving demands will impact how landlords approach space management and could pave way for competition to attract the new generation of employees. Smart technology will allow them to give their space out at premium rates to major companies that are, in turn, in the race to attract the most talented workers. Wieland pointed out that smartness could mean different things to different people depending on their requirements. “Smart may mean the building is equipped with building automation or it is IoT enabled,” he said. “Some say it is smart when IoT data is pushed out in the cloud with some analytics made available. Some use smart apps for space management and, therefore, the building must be smart. What’s not popular is spending a lot on infrastructure because the smart industry has not made a good and verified business case for the potential savings to business. This may explain why energy efficiency projects have a lot of barriers to uptake.”

Retail SIQURA VIDEO SECURITY PROTECT KUWAIT MALLS Real estate developer Tamdeen Group has recently opened two mega malls in Kuwait and asked Siqura to outfit them with their video security systems. Perimeter Secu The perimeter security market is steadily growing due to the threat of terrorism. As technology for perimeter protection equipment advances, security operators are able to detect more than before. BY Eifeh Strom, Freelancer

P

erimeter security has come a long way from simple fences installed around the outer bounds of a premises. As a market, growth has been steady due to increased terror threats globally. The perimeter security market is expected to reach US$196.6 billion by 2022, up from $110.6 billion in 2017, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.2 percent between 2017 and 2022, according to a report by MarketsandMarkets. Market growth is primarily attributed

52

www.asmag.com

to the rise in terror attacks worldwide. Increasing technological developments in video surveillance are also fueling the demand for perimeter security systems and services, as is the increased usage of the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart technologies.

urity

How Plug-and-Play Systems are Making Perimeter Security More Accessible Obstacles to the adoption of new technologies can often be attributed to price and over complex installation. With plug-and-play solutions, more verticals are deploying perimeter security systems.

F

rom RBtec’s point of view, the change from systems that are custom, expensive, complicated to install and expensive to maintain to plug-and-play, cost effective systems that require no experience, certification or training to use and no maintenance is one of the biggest trends in the global perimeter security market, according to Dori Ribak the company’s VP of Marketing. “For example a self-storage facility or a dealership five years ago who would experience constant break-ins and people cutting the fence did not have the means to deal with the problem. They would have to compromise on IR beams that constantly produced false alarms from vegetation, weather and animals or had to try and solve the problem with cameras that usually showed them a guy in a hoodie with a stolen vehicle (or cheap analytics that false alarms when it rains),” Ribak said. Now, with simple fence alarm sensor cable kits, like ones offered by RBtec, security operators previously unable to afford or lacking technical capability now have access. “These kits can be purchased from standard distributors like ADI and Anixter where most security integrators go to buy their other equipment,” Ribak said. “This helps to simplify the process for premises like the self-storage facility, who can now go to his security guy and ask them to add intrusion detection to its fence and connect it to his existing burglar alarm system. Furthermore, an integrator that has never done perimeter security in his life can easily buy the system and install it without worrying about his ability to deliver a good working system,” he added.

In North America, which is expected to hold the largest share of the global market, an increase in terrorist activities, illegal immigration and criminal activities are the biggest factors dr iving per imeter security market growth, according to

he rapidly widening scope of security products in light of the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) and other developments are boosting the confidence of security solution providers. In Europe, for instance, several companies are paying close attention to the increasing demand

60

www.asmag.com

for integrated solutions while persisting security concerns continue to push demand higher. For systems integrators in the region, this would mean more opportunities. But it would appear that more and more companies are talking of the importance of a projectsbased approach toward the market.

The Rise of Electronics in a Mechanical World of Access Control As electronic technology makes inroads into all kinds of devices that were purely mechanical until recently, possibilities of innovative and effective solutions have opened up.

I

“The prices will go down as time goes by, but the question is whether we will be able to lower the price to such a level that it is really an alternative to mechanical systems,” Ehrlich-Adám said. “At present, it is not because you can buy good quality mechanical systems at a good pr ice whereas electronics is still not that affordable to many.” U l t i m a t e l y, t h e c r u c i a l r o l e a developer and the systems integrators involved in a project needs to play is understanding the requirements that are present. Not all locks may need to be electronic and not all should be mechanical. The key is to decide what is required and where, based on the nature of the site.

n the access control industry, the situation is not any different. There is a clear trend of integrating mechanical and electronic locks that can result in more secure and intelligent systems. But does this mean that electronics will someday replace the mechanical side? Perhaps not. At least, not in the foreseeable future, according to Stefan Ehrlich-Adám, MD and CEO of the Austrian company EVVA. “We have been specializing on the mechanical side of the business for many years but for the last 25 years or so, the trend has been a move toward electronics,” Ehrlich-Adám said. “Now we say the interesting part is how to combine mechanics and electronics in a creative and intelligent way. We are a project-based company. This means it is important for us that we see a building as a whole project, to see where we can place mechanical products and where we need to place electronic products. We have seen electronics becoming more and more important in the last 25 years, but it will never replace mechanics 100 percent, at least not for the next several years.” However, he is quick to point out that the share of electronic technology in "The trend is to combine the industry is steadily rising. Almost 50 percent of the projects done these mechanics and electronics days would involve some electronic in a creative and intelligent component or the other. Verticals such as way." the residential sector continue to provide importance to mechanical products whereas the commercial sector has opened up to the possibilities of electronics. Sectors such as healthcare and critical infrastructure, which have their own unique requirements, appear to be more interested in the electronic systems. Keeping such developments in perspective, EVVA, for about four years, has been developing their own electronic access control platform. This could be a significant move as unified platforms are going to be a popular product for customers in the future. Speaking further on future trends, Ehrlich-Adám also indicated that mobile technology could play a key role in access control systems in the coming years. A major challenge, however, to all this, is the question of how affordable these solutions can be for the consumer and whether the returns justify the investment. Costs are, after all, a single major deciding factor on many occasions.
