Data protection and cyberthreats are growing issues in our society, affecting everyone from enterprises to the general public — every single day. On March 25th, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg placed full-page ads in major newspapers in the U.K. and the U.S. to apologize for the recent data breach. The breach was the result of a quiz app built by Cambridge Analytica, a company accused of manipulating Facebook data during the 2016 US presidential election. Many online and social media marketers have since admitted that Facebook data breaches are an open secret and many other similar analytic apps can also access a large amount of user data from various forms of media. No matter who we are, we should all be responsible for protecting our own data and the data we deal with. The Facebook data breach will not be the only event singled-out in the virtual world. Soon, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the strictest law of its kind in the EU, is going to roll out on May 25th. With the launch of this regulation, other countries in Europe and the U.S. will most likely follow. The GDPR and Facebook incident are kicking off the awareness of data protection and cyberthreats; however, global awareness for this issue still has a long way to go.

ecuritas has agreed to acquire the division Kratos Public Safety and Security (KPSS) from Kratos Defense and Security Solutions. The purchase price is approximately US$69 million (SEK550 million) on a cash and debt-free basis. The acquisition is expected to be neutral to Securitas earnings per share in 2018 and 2019, and accretive as of 2020. Kratos Public Safety and Security is ranked as a top 10 systems integrator in the United States. The operation has annual sales of approximately $135 million and includes 400 employees. The primary focus is electronic security projects for commercial customers with special expertise in transportation, petrochemical, healthcare and education vertical markets. The business provides design, engineering, installation and service of advanced integrated security technology and systems. KPSS has a wide breadth of capabilities including access,
video, intrusion and fire solutions supported by on-going maintenance, inspections and monitoring services. KPSS, which is to be combined with Securitas Electronic Security, aligns well with Securitas Electronic Security’s current operations and strategic focus. APPLICATION CASES Transportation AIRPORT UPGRADES SECURITY WITH PELCO IP SURVEILLANCE SOLUTIONS A busy cargo airport in Memphis, Tennessee, undertook a massive addition to their grounds, building a ground transportation center (GTC). Pelco by Schneider Electric IP cameras and recording solution were selected for the upgrade, along with Pelco’s Endura VMS to manage the system and provide valuable analytics. The second phase of the project involved replacing its access control, parking and revenue and analog camera systems throughout the entire airport property. To create a fully integrated security solution, the Endura VMS was expanded to manage over 1,100 Spectra PTZ IP cameras and Sarix fixed IP cameras. The airport is currently upgrading its Endura VMS to VideoXpert Enterprise. Once complete, the airport will be able to incorporate Schneider Electric’s AccessXpert Enterprise security solution. owered fuel consumption, better compliance management and increased driver safety are just a few of the benefits an effective fleet management system (FMS) can have on a fleet. With a neverending need for better operational efficiency, the global FMS market is witnessing strong growth and expected to reach US$28.7 billion by 2022 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.8 percent, according to a recent report by research firm MarketsandMarkets. The declining cost of hardware and connectivity along with a need to comply with government regulations are just a few of the factors driving growth. With the market expected to continue in an upward trend, FMS companies are looking to provide systems that not only meet but exceed the requirements of fleet managers. This means systems that go beyond simply optimizing operations — it means smarter systems with a number of features that maximize return on investment (ROI) and make managing fleets easier.
What Fleet Managers Want

Optimizing operational efficiency is always the overall goal of an effective FMS; however, fleet managers want and need more out of their system. “Fleet management solutions that go above and beyond basic requirements, help to position fleet managers and their businesses for success when it comes to data-driven decision making,” said Scott Sutarik, Associate VP of Commercial Vehicle Solutions at Geotab. “Outside of the standard FMS features, fleet managers are looking for a solution that will evolve with them as their business and business needs change in the coming years.” Convenience, according to Laura Maxwell, Product Marketing Manager at Fleetio, is the most common theme requested. “Fleet managers are looking for a system that allows them to manage their fleet from anywhere and saves them time by reducing the effort needed to complete common fleet management tasks. Enabling fleet managers, mechanics, foreman and others to access and log data on the go keeps the fleet humming along. The ability to automate data entry and handle specific tasks and business cases automatically helps save a ton of time.” Fleet managers are also looking to address more specific issues, such as reducing idling time, reducing downtime and improving productivity. By reducing unnecessary idling time, fleet managers could reduce fuel costs and emissions. “An effective FMS will provide the ability to visualize total fleet idling and will monitor weekly and monthly idling trends with custom reports,” Sutarik said. Managers are also looking to minimize unnecessary vehicle downtime, which can be done through predictive maintenance and diagnostics. “An FMS may allow fleet managers to identify potential vehicle issues in a timely manner and set up regular maintenance reminders to assist in prioritizing and preparing for repairs,” Sutarik added. Additionally, improved efficiencies and productivity can be achieved by accessing data such as number of customer stops made a day and routing. An FMS that provides such data would allow fleet managers to get the most out of their fleet and gain better insight into the utilization of vehicles within the fleet and routes taken.
Key Considerations to be Made
Just as choosing the right FMS could boost operational efficiency, choosing the wrong system could result in unexpected added costs, or worse unreliable technology. In order to avoid the pitfalls of a “bad” system, several considerations should first be made. Maxwell noted fleet managers should consider what will be required of their fleet

With changing times, NVRs have become more than just recording devices amid more complex demands from users. ideo recording has come a long way. Digital video recorders in analog systems have slowly given way to network video recorders (NVRs) amid a migration toward IP-based surveillance. And the growth of NVRs is not going to stop anytime soon. A recent report from Technavio forecast that the growth of the NVR server market will grow steadily at a compound annual growth rate of close to 15 percent, between 2017 and 2021. In the beginning, NVRs recorded video footage mostly for post-event investigation purposes, providing evidence to end users, police and prosecutors after something happens. But increasingly, NVRs are equipped with more advanced functions and capabilities to meet more complex user demands. “The first key factor is ease-ofuse, including easy setup and intuitive user interface. Then, users start to focus on further advanced functions such as H.265 HEVC to keep videos for longer time; 4K UHD display to easily check video in detail; integration of other systems/devices to centrally control and manage several device; and AI analysis and smart quick search when event happens,” said Jacky Cheng, CEO of DIGIEVER. “Traditional requirements for a network video recorder in a universal video surveillance system is that it should record videos of important moments and ensure that the video files are complete and not lost. With the global security situation going increasingly severe, people have gradually increased requirements and expectations for video surveillance systems. It is hoped that the key

monitoring targets can be identified, the targets and abnormal behaviors can be discovered, and the operator can be alerted all in a real-time manner, so that timely measures can be taken to reduce the damage or loss caused by various abnormal conditions. In addition, after an abnormal situation occurs, relevant video files can be quickly called at any time, reducing the large amount of staff and time required by traditional solutions,” said Eason Rao, Product Manager at Dahua Technology. “The development of artificial intelligence technology, efficient deep learning algorithms and powerful GPU computing capabilities enable intelligent NVRs to achieve real-time identification of targets or behaviors, and the speed of event
queries is increased by tens of thousands of times. This not only greatly reduces the loss caused by a situation, but also the manpower and time spent on the incident inquiry.”
Smart NVRs
In this sense, NVRs have evolved into “smart” NVRs that fulfill the user’s various needs. “Most of normal NVRs will be replaced by smart NVRs, and they will be more and more economical and efficient in real-time object identification and metadata abstract,” said Rao. “The integration protocol will be unified as soon as possible, and it can work with third-party devices and VMS.” An enabler of smart NVRs is advances in hardware. Now, advanced CPUs and even GPUs have gradually become standard features in NVRs to process video from dozens of megapixel IP cameras. “Yes, more and more interests are based on structure data and object recognition, so powerful GPUs or CPUs with AI computing capability are more and more important,” said Rao. As an example, Pauline Yen, Director of A-MTK, mentioned her company’s NR3368S NVR, which supports 720p to 4K IP camera resolution. “It’s based on ARM Cortex 4-core CPU. ARM-based means lower budget but good performance,” she said. The advances in hardware have in turn enabled more powerful software to be embedded in NVRs, which can detect abnormal objects or other irregularities in the video feed and thus alert the operator, who can then react accordingly. In addition to enabling better situational awareness, these NVRs also include advanced software that helps the operator quickly retrieve relevant video footage for post-event investigation. One example is A-MTK’s NVR which has a sequential search function. “For instance, there’s a bank robbery that happened between 3 and 4 p.m. The A-MTK NVR divides the 60-minute video clip into 36 timeslots, each with 1.6 minutes. Then the NVR divides each timeslot into 36 pieces, each with 2.6 seconds. With this you can clearly see the vivid image of the robber’s face.

Furthermore, these smart features can help the operator achieve non-security purposes. “Integrated AI functions can quickly get key data from the NVR to make video date become more valuable, such as face detection, people counting analysis, people flow analysis, behavior analysis, big data mining and statistic. Integrated AI functions such as human behavior analysis in the NVR can help us easily see the trend and forecast the future from big video data,” Cheng said. “With smart NVRs, the ability to support motion detection, tampering and other security analytics is really table stakes these days. What we are seeing now is growing demand for integrated business analytics such as people counting, queue length, dwell time, license plate recognition and others, which combine with video and other data to provide true business intelligence,” said Jeff Morton, IP Recorders Product Manager at March Networks. “For example, a retail organization can use dwell time analytics combined with video and point-of-sale data to analyze and compare customer service performance at all of its locations, and identify areas for improvement based on

ccording to Colliers International’s 2018 Asia Pacific Property Outlook report, real estate investment volumes will continue to grow due to the region’s strong economic growth and persistent low real interest rates. Demand for leased office space will remain high, says the report, especially in Hong Kong, Singapore, India and the leading Chinese cities. Under this real estate trend in APAC is a convergence of property and technology, as more and more buildings start to adopt building automation systems (BAS) — which automatically control and monitor a building’s lighting systems; heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC); and security and access control. Such adoption has changed the way we use and interact with real estate. Commercial buildings have always been the largest building category for smart system installation and application. The Asia-Pacific region, in particular, is expected to show rapid growth due to increasing construction of high-end office buildings and their adoption of automation systems. According to Adarsh Krishnan, Senior Analyst at ABI Research, revenue in commercial building automation in APAC is forecast to grow to over $5 billion in 2022, witnessing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.7 percent from 2017 to 2022. “The region remains the strongest globally for new construction projects, and investment in newly constructed commercial infrastructure will continue to drive sales of building automation equipment,” said Bryan Montany, Research Analyst at IHS Markit’s Security and Building Technologies group. He added: “The Asian market is still driven predominantly by sales of equipment

While retrofit projects to install equipment in preexisting buildings are becoming more common throughout Asia, over 75 percent of the market in China and over 80 percent of the market in India is accommodating new construction projects.” Elangovan Karuppiah, CEO of the Middle East and Asia-Pacific Region at Siemens Building Technologies, also sees the Asian market potential, saying that the company expects the region to take a larger share of the global office building demand by 2020. “Of the 74 billion square feet of the global office building stock, 36 billion square feet will be in Asia, with China accounting for 69 percent,” he said. Wang Ziquan, Director of Controls Products for Building Technologies and Solutions at Johnson Controls, mentioned a few construction trends in Asia that could help boost the BAS market, including transportation projects in Southeast Asian countries participating in China’s One Belt One Road Initiative, China’s intention to replicate its success in infrastructure construction in the first- and second-tier cities elsewhere, and India’s welcoming stance toward foreign investment.
Demand for Energy Efficiency Driving Government Initiatives
Government emphasis on reducing carbon footprints and increasing energy efficiency has played a crucial role in driving the commercial building automation market. There has been a shift in the mentality of building owners as they respond to stricter energy regulations being implemented by governments to curb energy usage. Rapid construction abilities in the APAC commercial sector will inevitably result in higher energy consumption. As Adarsh Krishnan, Senior Analyst at ABI Research predicts, China and India are expected to witness highest growth rates in energy consumption in the commercial building sector between 2015 and 2040. China’s building automation market harbors immense growth potential as its urbanization continues and the government pushes for more effective means to achieve sustainability. For example, the country’s 13th Five-Year Plan for the Development of Building Energy Efficiency and Green Buildings includes aggressive goals for green building construction and renovation, including a requirement for 50 percent of all new urban buildings to be certified green by 2020. Meanwhile, the local governments of nearly 20 cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen have set even more ambitious targets, requiring all new commercial buildings to be green buildings. Bryan Montany, Research Analyst at IHS Markit’s Security and Building Technologies group, said that it is the government initiatives in these major cities that have had the bigger impact on the nation’s building automation market. Japan is another case in point. In 2015, the Japanese government passed the Act on Improvement of Energy Consumption Performance of Buildings, which requires both new and retrofitted commercial buildings with a floor space of 2,000 square meters or more to comply with the energy conservation standards. Montany commented that because the Japanese government has a proven track record of promoting energy efficiency and enforcement of its codes, IHS Markit anticipates that installations of building automation equipment in retrofit projects will continue to grow in Japan. In Singapore, stringent building energy efficiency requirements set by the regulatory bodies are creating a sense of urgency for organizations to streamline the process of energy management and optimization. Also, because the use and integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) is mandatory in the country, industry players need to make sure their products and solutions are BIM-compliant, said Elangovan Karuppiah, CEO for the Middle East and Asia-Pacific Region at Siemens Building Technologies. John Tan, Key Account Manager at ABB, said that the Singaporean government has offered incentives for organizations to adopt smart technologies and implemented the Green Mark Scheme, a green building rating system, to promote sustainability.

In terms of market maturity, Asia has not achieved the same level as Europe and North America, where both building construction and performance are highly regulated by stringent standards, said Karuppiah. “In the Asian markets, the cost of construction tends to play a bigger role than lifecycle cost. Each layer will have different “weighting,” and this weighting reflects on what was learnt about the images’ “components.” The higher the layer level, the more specific the components. Just like the human brain, an original signal in deep learning passes through layers of processing; next, it takes a partial understanding (shallow) to an overall abstraction (deep) where it can perceive the object. Deep learning does not
require manual intervention but relies on a computer to extract features by itself. This way, it is able to extract as many features from the target as possible, including abstract features that are difficult or impossible to describe. The more features there are, the more accurate the recognition and classification will be. Some of the most direct benefits that deep learning algorithms can bring include
achieving comparable or even better-than-human pattern recognition accuracy, strong anti-interference capabilities, and the ability to classify and recognize thousands of features.
Challenges of Existing Systems
Conventional surveillance systems mostly detect moving targets, without further analysis. Even
smart IP cameras can only map individual points on a shape one by one, making it difficult to calibrate some features (e.g., forehead or cheek), thus decreasing accuracy. For perimeter security, for example, other technologies can be (and are) used to provide more comprehensive security. But they all have their downsides. Infrared emission detectors can be
“jumped over� but are also prone to false alarms caused by animals. Electronic fences can be a safety hazard, and are limited in certain areas. Some of these solutions can also be expensive and complicated to install. Objects such as animals, leaves or even light can cause false alarms, so being able to identify the presence of a human shape really improves the accuracy of perimeter video content analytics (VCA) functions. Frequent false alarms are always an issue for end users, who need to spend time to investigate each one, potentially delaying any necessary response and generally affecting efficiency.

ollowing the economic downturn of 2008 and subsequent long-term recovery, the Adriatic region’s security market has recorded steady growth for yet another consecutive year. This is the result of the recovery of local economies. All countries in South-Eastern Europe have continued to record economic growth in 2017, which was accompanied by higher employment rates and poverty reduction. “Over the past few years, the countries of the Western Balkans have made progress in reforming public finances and reviving economic growth, although the citizens may not see benefits from this progress yet,” said Linda van Gelder, Country Director for the Western Balkans Region at the World Bank. Still, it is estimated that it will take 60 years for these countries to reach the cumulative level of the European Union (EU). The reason for this prognosis is rooted in having almost halved growth rate on average, which, prior to the economic downturn, amounted to five to six percent annually. The downturn halved it and cut short the pre-crisis upward tendency to shoot for EU living standards. This made it obligatory to look for new growth models based on higher productivity and investments, increased exports and the greater role for the private sector. “The growth we witnessed in the region during the pre-crisis years is a testament to the overall economic potential of the Western Balkans,” said Harald Waiglein, Director General for Economic Policy and Financial Markets at the Austrian Ministry of Finance. If the growth of the Adriatic region countries is to return to the level it had 10 years ago, the estimated time to catch up with the EU would be three times shorter. Higher exports, more investments and jobs and stronger regional integration are priorities for the economic policy makers, it is said in the World Bank’s report entitled Revving Up the Engines of Growth and Prosperity in the Western Balkans.

will “lay the foundation for the automated smart home experience,” according to the company’s research director, Jonathan Collins. For its part, Ovum predicts that sales of security devices, such as cameras, door locks and sensors will help drive the market for smart home

The report’s authors predict that, worldwide, “15.5 percent of households will have adopted smart home security technology by 2021,” while commenting “only 6.2 percent will be paying for a professional smart home security service.”
Cellular Support
Increasingly, home security systems are being supported by cellular networks. While take up is obviously dependent on the country in which the system is installed, depending on cellular infrastructure availability — the U.S. and China have particularly buoyant marketplaces — cellular technology offers greater protection from network failure or tampering than does the standard phone network (public switched telephone network or PSTN). In common with most modern communicationsbased systems, data represents an increasingly important constituent part of home security systems. Cellular technology is able to support video transmission from devices in the home. It also supports text-based alerts, more commonly known as short message service (SMS) alerts and other instant messaging applications that can be easily installed in common
smartphones. The Mobile Intelligence report issued by Dynmark in 2015 said that research shows “90 percent of text messages are read within 3 seconds of being received” and have “a final read rate of 98 percent.” The majority of current security systems already rely on 2G and 3G cellular technology, both of which are widely available and offer reliable coverage. Increasingly, new systems are adopting Long Term Evolution-based 4G technology, more commonly referred to as LTE. LTE is a first-generation 4G technology that is being rolled out in different “flavors” and at varying paces according to country. LTE Category 1 is already widely available at worldwide level and likely to form the backbone technology for smart home security systems, with its support for both voice and data. Slightly longer term, LTE Category M1 offers a good basis for enhanced security system support. This low-power version of LTE caters for battery-backed Internet of Things (IoT) devices that connect directly to a 4G network and thus eliminate the need to connect to an external radio network gateway. Other IoT sensors and actuators with an even lower data rate are catered for by the Narrowband NB-IoT specification.
LTE Category M1 will also offer voice capability through VoLTE (Voice over LTE networks), enabling it to cater for applications such as security alarm panels, fire prevention and other safety systems that require a level of human interaction. NB-IoT does not have voice capability and it is therefore more suitable for remote control of smart IoT connected devices such as HVAC systems, smoke detectors, thermostats, smart lockers and other IoT sensors where voice interaction is not strictly necessary.
Protection Mechanisms
The latest generations of cellular system offer enhanced protection for the security system end user, for instance through the encryption and authentication of network signals. The lack of these features in earlier systems laid them open to possible interception of signals sent from home security systems to an external gateway. Modern cellular systems preserve the integrity of data by providing encryption of all communications. Without the requisite codes, data remains inviolable. Further protection is provided by the use of authentication and identity verification technologies and digital signatures. Identification technologies include passwords and
personal identification numbers (PINs) as well as biometric mechanisms such as fingerprint recognition and voice, iris or face scanning. One disadvantage of radio-based technologies such as cellular is that they are potentially open to criminal strategies such as signal jamming. The most determined criminals are potentially able to identify the waveband being used and jam or block signals. Jamming detection mechanisms are available to avoid this problem. Cybersecurity is continually in the press. It’s vital that software and firmware is always updated, to prevent malicious attacks by criminals who can otherwise exploit vulnerabilities in code. Alarm systems based on cellular modules made it possible to have these updates made over the air, so-called firmware over the air (FOTA), saving on time spent sending out engineers to update systems and enabling changes to be made in a timelier manner. By using cellular communication technology, surveillance systems are able to evolve resilience to newer cybersecurity attacks. Security technology, like human beings, is able to exhibit natural evolution.

As manufacturing methods continue to evolve in the direction of increased automation, the Smart Factory Pavilion will feature Scannel RFID Tunnel System, 3D sensing solution, factory parameter surveillance system and facial recognition solutions to enhance automation a p p l i c a t i o n s , s u p p ly ch a i n a n d l o g i st i c s management and factory safety. Exhibitors will include Zulite, Lips, Winhome, GIGA-TMS, GKB Security, EtherWAN, Bitman and Panasonic.
As urban populations expand, intelligent transportation solutions are increasingly needed to enhance road safety and solve congestion issues. With this in mind, the Intelligent Transportation Pavilion will feature exhibitors Genetec, Hikvision, Qognify, ITRI, MCUT, EtherWAN and TVEC with a focus on four key areas: intelligent video surveillance, video management systems, autonomous bus and fleet management.

In line with recent global trends of building smart, sustainable and energy efficient cities, the Smart Street Lighting Pavilion will feature intelligent video applications for t ra f f i c management and traffic violation, remote patrol, data collection and energy management from exhibitors such as Aaeon, HiPower and Liteon.
The IoT has empowered consumers to shop like never before and retailers are increasingly having to adopt IoT-based solutions with a wide variety of applications. Taking this into account, the Smart Retail Pavilion will display advanced video analytics, facial recognition, thermal imaging, and digital marketing and business intelligence
