COVER STORY

Milestone Embraces Full Capabilities of Video Software With the Community As video surveillance applications continue to expand beyond security, Milestone’s open platform and partnership model supports a thriving business ecosystem.

V

October 2017 ● www.asmag.com

ideo technology continues to transform in the Internet of Things (IoT). The rise of IoT has opened up additional revenue avenues for VMS providers from software and application development in today’s increasingly digital and network-based world. In Asia Pacific alone, IoT presents a US$583 billion market opportunity, with the number of connected devices expected to grow from 3.1 billion to 8.6 billion by 2020. Milestone Systems was one of the first to realize this potential in the market and has since established itself as an industry giant, with IHS Markit naming the company as the number one global VMS provider for the ninth year running. An open platform plus the right ecosystem of partners provides the foundation for success with best-inclass solutions. “From an overall market perspective, we are experiencing tremendous growth. Milestone is outperforming the market by more than three times the growth rate. We are also leading in the APAC region where we grew by 20 percent compared to an overall market growth of 1.1 percent,” said Kenneth Hune Petersen, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer at Milestone Systems. This success can be attributed to Milestone’s open platform software and ecosystem of partners, which has become a continuous source of co-creation and innovation. It has not only opened up new markets for the company, but expanded a base of solutions built on the open source platform that can be tailored by partners for application in multiple industries. “The world is changing quickly — and with change comes opportunity. The power of multiple partnerships offers customers a fully integrated solution. With close co-development and teamwork, we provide countless solutions for integrated video management,” said Benjamin Low, VP of Sales for Asia Pacific at Milestone Systems. This can clearly be seen in Milestone’s comprehensive solution portfolio in Asia, which ranges from commercial spaces and educational institutions in Australia, to airports and government installations in Singapore and other Southeast Asian countries. With this powerful partnership comprising a community of providers, integrators are able to truly customize solutions in a way that allows end users to achieve additional functionality while leveraging their existing investments.

GrowinG in and Beyond Security Although the potential for growth in security is still strong, Low sees great opportunity across APAC outside the industry. With a growing number of businesses

recognizing the possibilities, Milestone is helping companies integrate advanced applications, such as facial recognition, with existing surveillance systems and transforming the return on investment. Petersen added, “Around 90 percent of our revenue currently comes from security and we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg in terms of market potential for services beyond. Milestone can help change investments in video surveillance from a sunk cost to a business enabler. We see this as our obligation — to inspire and enable our community partners to try something new and expand their services.” Petersen cited smar t cities as a prime example of this trend, as these projects touch upon two of the biggest buzzwords in the industry — IoT, because of all the sensors and cameras that are generating a tremendous load of data, and artificial intelligence (AI), which is needed to process it. “Governments are calling out for solutions that can better protect cities, interoperate existing sensors and manage all this from one centralized command center. By correlating the data gathered, they can make sense of everything as well as predict patterns and trends,” added Low. Low explained Milestone’s role in these advanced security applications and beyond, saying, “At the end of the

day, VMS tends to be the centerpiece of everything. With Milestone’s open application programming interface (API), we allow different devices and solution partners to develop an interface with us.” Milestone is also doing what it can to remove bottlenecks in its certification process to ensure all the devices and software run smoothly and are interoperable. “We are looking into outsourcing our certification; setting up rules and criteria so that third party companies can do this for us and our community partners,” said Petersen. “We tried to apply the same logic that we used when the company was founded — we can’t do all of this by ourselves so why not make it open platform?” He added that this is something Milestone aims to accomplish in two years’ time.

Continued FoCus on AsiA With MiPs hAnoi Moving forward, Milestone aims to further strengthen its commitment in Asia as it remains an important growth region for the company, amidst market consolidation and price pressures. “Other than investing internally in our sales and support team to service our customers better, we are investing in our community as well,” said Low. Milestone held its first ever Asia Pacific Milestone Integration Platform Symposium (MIPS) earlier this year in Macau, where nearly 300 community partners engaged in dialogue sessions and workshops. “I think the MIPS events a re M i l e s t o n e’s u n i q u e way of giving back to its community, channels and solution partners,” said Low. “With more than 100,000 video management installations and thousands of partners, we help companies all over the world empower their business with lasting technology and reliable systems. We appreciate what

they give and they gain valuable connections. But it isn’t a one-way street, we all grow and become successful together.” Milestone hopes to build on this next year in January with its 2018 MIPS APAC event in Hanoi, Vietnam. “The launch of our vision ‘make the world see’ was successful. We signed up a tremendous number of new partners to our community this past year and saw a growth of more than 150 percent in our free software downloads,” said Petersen. “We continue to work hard on creating a platform that the community can leverage. The Milestone store was launched this year and more new things will be launched on our platform at MIPS Hanoi. There is definitely a lot to look forward to.”

“With close co-development and teamwork, we provide countless solutions for integrated video management.” Co-Creation of opportunities Milestone continues to show its dedication to its open platform and ecosystem approach, not only by continually advancing the platform, but also by fostering engagement and collaboration within the community. These long-term partnerships will continue to create more opportunities for Milestone to grow alongside its partners and further cement its status as a leader in the industry. By building a community, everyone within the ecosystem benefits from the innovation and value creation. The ecosystem provides Milestone with a unique opportunity to make the world see the additional value that expands beyond security.

It goes without saying that today’s video surveillance systems are generating more video data than before. ideo is now one of the biggest sources of data in the world. According to IHS Markit, the amount of data produced in just one day by all the new video surveillance cameras installed worldwide in 2015 was 566 petabytes; this translates into 11.3 million standard double-layer Blu-ray movie discs, all Netflix’s users at the time streaming 1.2 hours of ultra-high definition content simultaneously, or about twice the amount of all user data stored by Facebook at the time. Contributing to this data is a growth in cameras. While IHS forecasted that some 98 million network surveillance cameras would be shipped in 2017, it mentions that globally, the video surveillance market is still not saturated and expects to see a CAGR of 20 percent in new camera unit shipments from 2014 to 2019.

Alastair McLeod, Group CEO, Veracity

Jerry Wu, BDM, Storage Appliance, AIC

Adding to that is the fact cameras are increasingly moving towards ultra-high definition (UHD). While IHS analyzed that volumes of 4K cameras remained low in 2016 — less than 1 percent of the 66 million network cameras shipped — it predicted that starting in 2018, the industry may see over a million 4K network cameras units shipped in a calendar year. Longer video retention, meanwhile, also plays a large role in the amount of data generated. Dynamic Network Factory, in one of its blog posts, said that generally, 30 days to 90 days period of surveillance recording is followed. “This includes European continent, where a standard of 30 days minimum/ maximum is followed. But this can be altered as per the requirements of the surveillance needs of an organization/enterprise,”

INTEGRATED SYSTEM

ACaaS Rolls I to the Mainstream A BY William Pao

ccess control as a service (ACaaS) has been around for a while. But it wasn’t until recently that people have realized the various benefits of ACaaS and begun to adopt it at a more rapid pace. According to a recent research report by MarketsandMarkets, the ACaaS market is expected to reach a value of US$1.7 billion by 2022, translating into a compound annual growth rate of 26.8 percent between 2016 and 2022. “Migration of access control to the cloud is becoming a mainstream trend. We can see a lot of movement in that direction,” said Andrija Pušić, Director of Product Management at Spica, which offers ACaaS through the Door Cloud brand. “We started doing this in 2002, and we’ve been doing it for over 15 years now. For the first eight to nine years this industry was a little bit slow. I would say in the past five years people have finally become comfortable in ACaaS and are more willing to move forward with this new model,” said Steve Van Till, CEO of Brivo.

October 2017 ● www.asmag.com

Benefits Abound for Users, Integrators Alike This increase in willingness certainly has to do with ACaaS benefits for users and integrators. For users, their biggest objective is to lower cost and focus on revenue-generating processes in the midst of competition, and ACaaS can help in that regard.

52

Access control as a service or ACaaS, in which a cloud service provider manages an end user’s access control needs, has become a major trend. This is mostly because of the various benefits associated with it — for example, enabling the user to lower or eliminate initial investment in access controlrelated devices and architecture. Meanwhile, users have also grown to trust service providers who are more knowledgeable of network security issues.

“Access control as a service continues to grow in popularity, particularly in smaller commercial projects, as it removes the capital-intensive setup costs of a traditional system. This allows the end user to transfer security management to a maintenance cost rather than an investment with no financial payoff. The capital saved can then be put to use on other revenue generating opportunities,” said Jim Dearing, Senior Market Analyst at IHS Markit. “Having the security system managed by an outside entity also relieves the responsibility

from the company’s own employees. This means that their time is also freed up for other revenue generating tasks. This also removes the possible vulnerabilities and inefficiencies caused by the staff member being on vacation or off work through illness.” For integrators, they also stand to benefit from ACaaS, which moves away from the one-off payment model for traditional installations. “Another reason the integrators have moved forward with this is that this is an industry that’s dominated by products that bring recurring monthly revenue. That’s why integrators have

Concerns Over Network Security

chosen to start selling more if it,” Van Till said. Currently, the market rate for managing access control is $15 per door per month; a typical small business with four to six doors represents a good deal for integrators. “In the past, integrator and installer awareness of this type of solution was a barrier to wider adoption. However, as the access control industries march toward greater use of more IT-centric devices during the past five years, these integrators are now much more knowledgeable of the benefits of selling this solution to end users,” said Dearing.

For quite some time, cybersecurity constituted a main concern for those seeking to migrate to ACaaS. “Cybersecurity concerns continue to hinder adoption of ACaaS solutions, especially in larger enterprise projects where the threat of (and damage caused by) a successful hack are much greater,” said Dearing. “Moving management of security offsite creates additional security vulnerabilities: for example the method of communication used between sites and the data/monitoring center.” Yet thanks to advances in technology

are following that trend of saying these cloud providers are spending 24 hours a day keeping my assets secure. They have dozens of software and network experts who do nothing but try to keep this thing safe. Whereas the amount of care bestowed on a typical client-server installation inside an end-user organization is close to zero, particularly small businesses who don’t have anybody on staff to take care of this,” he said.

Residential Sector Sees Pickup in Deployment ACaaS carries various advantages, one of the biggest being all doors are secured

"For users, their biggest objective is to lower cost and focus on revenue-generating processes in the midst of competition, and ACaaS can help in that regard." and best practices followed by vendors and users, cybersecurity has become less of an issue in ACaaS. “As with any software that lives in ‘the cloud,’ off-premise data management and cybersecurity are major concerns,” said Kane. “Over the years, as manufacturers and end users have become more accustomed to working in that space, network and cybersecurity have taken center stage and protections have been bolstered as a result, making it safer for businesses to deploy more cloud-based applications.” And according to Van Till, migrating to ACaaS can actually make access control more secure, given the fact service providers are generally more knowledgeable of network security than an end user entity’s own staff. “I would say that the opinion from the IT community or the CIO community has gone 180 degrees on that. Security departments and individual small business owners

and managed centrally, saving the end user the need to monitor everything onsite and invest in related devices and equipment. It is due to this reason that ACaaS is seeing deployment in various sectors, including residential. Within the residential segment, deployment is seen more in apartments and condominiums rather than single houses, where users have less access control needs. “People usually don’t use access control in their homes. What we’re seeing in residential homes that’s similar to access control are wireless door locks with very simple management packages that are designed to control access for a family, with flat permissions across the family and pin codes instead of access control cards,” said Van Till. “They are not nearly as sophisticated as a commercial access control system with multi-tier administration and the notion of multiple sites, schedules and holidays and all of
