EDITOR’S NOTE Emerging IPO Companies in China

KEEP IN TOUCH WITH...

The Chinese video surveillance manufacturing industry, which is often regarded as its strongest sector in security, has surpassed Taiwan and Korea to become the world’s largest. However, most of the domestic market and international sales, excluding the major systems integrators, are dominated by the top five suppliers in the country. The sales revenues of all the other product suppliers are actually quite small compared to them. According to a lot of industry experts, the majority of Chinese video surveillance companies outside the top 10 list, are finding it difficult to survive. One example is Uniview Technologies, which claimed to be the third biggest supplier in the country. Last March, 100-percent ownership of Uniview was sold to Jiaozhi Technologies, a publicly-listed company owned by China TransInfo Technology. With the additional financial support, Uniview was able to make itself sustainable and focus more on developing smart transportation video surveillance systems. Another example can be found by looking at emerging IPO security companies in the last five years. In the past, Chinese companies mostly looked for IPO in the U.S. Now, they are mostly preparing for IPO in China. The recent ones that have gone public in China include Anjubao, Kedacom, TVT, Videopark and Wanjiaan. Most of the security companies in China rely on capitalism to get financial sponsorship. However, due to similarities in their product portfolios, we would need to see how these companies will differentiate themselves through their global market strategies in the future.

he Internet of Things (IoT) has taken hold in our everyday life, with billions of connected devices already present and growing. Amid this trend, service providers should leverage these devices and the data they generate to deliver better service to customers. That was according to Mikael Lindholm, VP of Internet of Things at Telenor Group, who spoke during the 2017 Sweden-Taiwan Tech Innovation Forum held alongside Computex in June. Telenor, a Swedish telecom operator, was also an exhibitor at the show. According to Lindholm, IoT and big data have created new opportunities and business models for service providers as they deliver goods and service to customers, and one area where this is most noticeable is the home sector. Telenor itself is now piloting a project where food or groceries can be delivered right to the end user’s kitchen even if they are not at home, making smart homes even smarter. Under the project, Telenor partners up with Swedish food e-tailer Mat.se and Kolonial.no as well as ASSA ABLOY, giving the delivery person a temporary digital key that can work with the Yale Doorman digital lock as they deliver the groceries to the user’s home. Also according to Lindholm, another area where connected devices and data can enhance service is preventive maintenance. “Say you have a water pump that breaks. A service guy is called upon and comes to your facility, only to find that he does not have the right parts. So he reschedules another day while ordering the parts,” he said. “But sensors built into the water pump will ensure preventive maintenance where the service provider will be alerted of an impending malfunction before it happens.” Against this backdrop, service providers should leverage the power unleashed by the IoT to better engage with customers, Lindholm said, adding they should also utilize the resources of partners to achieve further success. “With the digital economy, you can engage with your customers 24/7 if they have an app. Be obsessed about the customers. Go and engage with them, and let them be part of your change process,” he said. “The value networks are also critical. You need to get the ecosystem working, because we don’t know everything. We know parts of it, and others know parts of it. We work with partners to find the best solution for the customers.”

HYDRO LIFE HEALTH AND REHABILITATION CENTER ADOPTS FST BIOMETRICS The H ydroLife Center sought an identification system that would make member check-in and visitor entry easy and efficient, and would not require them to carry RFID chips or other forms of physical identification. The Center had used standard RFID chips to manage access to the facility. However, loss of RFID chips was frustrating, and often

inconvenient for chaperones and aides assisting the elderly or individuals with disabilities. To facilitate member check-in and visitor entry, FST Biometrics was brought in to implement the company’s visual identification solution. FST Biometrics’ IMID Access was installed at the center and successfully integrated into the

existing member database, allowing for fast and accurate entry for the over 2,000 daily members and visitors. Enrollment in the system takes less than one minute, and members/visitors are identified and granted access in less than two seconds, allowing them to enter without breaking stride.

HOW SMART

TECHNOLOGIES TRANSFORM THE WORKPLACE Amid rising property price around the world and a more intense competitive business landscape, companies are scrambling to save on cost while maintaining their workforces’ productivity. A smart, high-tech office, in this regard, plays an increasingly important role, ensuring that employees stay in an automated and comfortable workspace. unning offices has become a more and more expensive proposition. According to a recent whitepaper by Siemens, a workplace in London already costs up to US$30,000 per employee per year. Making matters worse, the paper said, employees are also finding themselves having less space to work from. “In response to the exorbitant costs, businesses are cutting back on the amount of space assigned to each employee. The result is that employees in open-plan offices have on average 11.5 square meters of space compared to 46.5 square meters in conventional workplaces,” the paper said. Amid this trend, striking a balance between cost-saving and delivering a comfortable workspace has become a daunting challenge for enterprises, many of which have turned to smart office

ENERGY CONSERVATION Nowhere are the benefits of smart office solutions more noticeable than in the area of energy savings, achieved through automation that appeals to modern office workers. Ryan Martin, Principal Analyst, ABI Research

“It’s very often that people will forget to turn off the lights and AC, or close the door when they leave. By using a smart system you don’t need to think about it anymore,” said Jack He, International Marketing Director at HDL. “System will do this for you and will check the status of devices in a specific time period

based on the logic settings.” “Users can now determine how devices, such as air conditioning and lighting, behave under different situations, such as user identity, time, crowd size and nature of activity,” said Patrick Lim, Director of Group Sales and Marketing at Ademco Security Group. “Connected devices now makes addressing all these factors a lot easier.” Typically the automation of HVAC and lights relies on sensors that “sense” the present conditions of the office. “We offer a wide range of smart sensors technology, from presence detectors with in-built lux sensors to outdoor weather sensors for the office space to be automatically self-managed and achieve the maximum energy efficiency without sacrificing on comfort,” said John Tan, Key Account Manager at ABB. “These sensors will enable the office to automatically adjust its settings such as lights, HVAC, automated blinds, windows and outdoor façade according to the changes in the environment.” “The amount of ambient light coming into a building throughout the day differs by the time of the day. Already we see solutions where lights will fade automatically as you get closer to the windows, and they will adjust dynamically throughout the day,” said Ryan Martin, Principal Analyst at ABI Research. Taking a step further, sensors can interact with an employee’s wearable device to make the necessary adjustments. “Think of a large enterprise where folks are outfitted with wearable devices as part of an office health and wellness program. Those devices could have the ability to monitor temperature,” Martin said. “One of those inputs could be how it feels on an individual. Maybe 75 degrees Fahrenheit is hot for one person and cool for another, and at a particular point of the day one of us is in office, so if the building were to know that automatically or in advance, it could adjust ahead of time to accommodate the fact that the person who prefers cooler temperatures is not in the office. This kind of automation can have a big impact on operating cost.”

The Robots Are Here: Are You Ready? Autonomous machines are entering almost every other industry, increasing efficiency and potentially reducing costs. As concepts such as deep learning and artificial intelligence evolve further, we are set to witness robots revolutionizing each and every aspect of our lives. BY Prasanth Aby Thomas

he next big thing in technology is undoubtedly the rise of robots. And when we say robots, it’s not just about those that come in creepy humanoid forms, but also about the likes of robotic arms, medical assistants and industrial machines. In fact, experts now see the endless possibilities that robots can bring to human operations as the natural evolution of technology that can maximize the industrial output and human productivity.

A simple search over the internet will give you several market research reports that will give one an idea of the scale of growth that’s expected in this segment over the years. Speaking of service robots alone, the research firm MarketsandMarkets reports a projected market growth of US$23.9 billion by 2022, at a CAGR of 15.2 percent between 2016 and 2022. A report from International Data Corporation (IDC) said worldwide spending on robotics and related

22

services will hit $135.4 billion in 2019 growing at a CAGR of 19 percent. In 2015, global robotics spending had reached $71 billion. “Robotics is one of the core technologies that is enabling significant change in manufacturing through factory of the future initiatives. While traditionally used in the automotive industry, there is an increasing adoption of robotics in sectors like electronics, retail, health care, logistics, agriculture, services, education and government,” said Jing Bing Zhang, Research Director for Robotics at IDC Manufacturing Insights. “Such broad-based growth in robotic adoption is being driven by increasing labor costs, shortage of skilled labor, and an increasing emphasis on repeatable quality in conjunction with a reduction in prices of robotic systems and strategic national initiatives.” Dominating this space is the manufacturing segment, followed by resources, health care and the transportation industry. In fact, according to a report from PwC, industrial robots are on the verge of revolutionizing manufacturing. As they become smarter, faster and cheaper, they are being called upon to do more. They are taking on more “human” capabilities and traits such as sensing, dexterity, memory and trainability. And because of this, these robots are taking on more responsibilities, like picking and packaging, testing or inspecting products or assembling minute electronics.

Transforming manufacTuring The manufacturing segment has seen the use of robots for quite a few years now. But traditionally these machines were large and dangerous to anyone who strayed close to it, focusing on just one task at hand. All this is about to change as a new generation of manufacturing robots that have come in that are smarter, more mobile, more collaborative and adaptable. According to Charles Chiu, CEO of KUKA Robot Automation Taiwan, the world of work and industrial production is going to undergo fundamental change. This is a development rather than an abrupt change, a fourth industrial evolution, one that will be accelerated by megatrends such as digitization, demographic change and individuality. “Industry 4.0 offers enormous potential,” Chiu said. “And that is important because global megatrends are presenting huge challenges for our industrialized countries. Society is getting older and there is a hunger for increasingly customized products and services. Digitization and automation are helping to react appropriately to these developments. In the smart factory, we will be able to produce customized products at low, mass-production prices. Robots are carrying out physically strenuous work for us. Digitization offers many possibilities which are altering our lives and production environments.”

Collaborative Robots Taking this point further, Paul Deady, Automotive Segment Manager in North America at Staubli Robotics said that we are now in the midst of two emerging trends in manufacturing and robotics. The first one obviously is Industry 4.0. The second, more significant change we are seeing is the introduction of collaborative robots or cobots. “Up till now industrial robots needed to be segregated from humans to protect people from potential injury during their operation,” Deady said. “We are now engaged in a manufacturing shift where there are different stages of human and robot collaboration and robots can be put to work at tasks where humans cooperate in the manufacturing process. These stages have two main segmentations. The robot will slow down as human approaches and come to a stop before contact is possible. Or, the robot will remain in motion working alongside the person and stop on contact, or is in motion while being hand guided by a

person. This safe capability to work with people is opening up all kinds of spaces where robots can add value. As a result we are seeing more small-to-medium size manufacturers utilizing robotics in their manufacturing processes.” Staubli’s major market is in the automotive sector, which represents 70 percent of their business. There are several other companies that are providing solutions in this segment as well. For example, at the car manufacturer Nissan’s Yokohama plant in Japan that was being hurt by an aging workforce, Universal Robots introduced its cobots as part of the process of installing engine block intake manifolds. Similarly, ABB, the Swedish-Swiss robotics company recently introduced its collaborative robot called YuMi that is approximately the size of a small human and can be taught a process by being physically guided through it, eliminating the need for complex, time-consuming code-based instruction.

The manufacturing sector is leading the way in the adoption of robots, followed by resources, health care and the transportation industry.

Connectivity of the IoT

Connectivity is one element of the Internet of Things (IoT) movement that has overshadowed the rest. “The idea is that once an end-node has the ability to intelligently communicate back to a network — rather than simply pipe raw data — then all the fruits of the IoT philosophy will follow. We believe that only then will we have truly achieved IoT systems for this market,” said Remi El-Ouazzane, VP of New Technology Group and GM of Movidius at Intel. In terms of edge analytics, El-Ouazzane explained many applications require intelligence at the edge for reasons of latency, bandwidth, fault tolerance and privacy. “Certainly, there will be many cloud-centric applications for network cameras, but we also feel there will be many hybridized approaches where intelligence is distributed appropriately along the entire stack — including the edge for workload intensive tasks such as computer vision and deep learning.”

“By applying deep learning algorithms to edge analytics, devices could be taught to better filter unnecessary data, which in a world of big data could save time, money and manpower.„ and moving them into the cameras themselves, edge analytics is able to provide end users with more accurate, efficient real-time data analysis. The edge analytics market is forecast to grow from US$1.9 billion in 2016 to nearly $8 billion by 2021, at a CAGR of 32.6 percent, according to a report by Research and Markets. The report cited the advent of IoT, proliferation of massive amounts of data through connected devices, and increased adoption of edge analytics due to its scalability and cost optimizations as growth drivers for the market. Additionally,

an increase in government initiatives for the IoT and cloud technologies will also result in higher adoption of edge analytics. Regionally, APAC is estimated to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. The report attributes this growth to “a tremendous demand for deployment of edge analytics technologies with advanced analytics solutions that provides comprehensive support and specialty in real-time access of data, facilitating enterprises to comprehend business scenario, and take quicker and faster decisions.”

Growth aside, it is the new developments in edge analytics that are driving adoption in smart cameras. Developments in deep learning algorithms and processing power are not only driving growth, but improving results.

displayed the steady growth typical of a more mature market. “The US security market is different from the international market as it is much more established, and also has a lot of regulations as well as a lot of infrastructure built,” commented James Chong, CEO and Founder of Vidsys. “We are growing in the U.S. but it’s not at the same pace of the international market. It’s more of a steady growth where you’re adding more sites, licenses, users, but it’s not like you’re doing 10 new projects at the same time.” Continued technological upgrades account for a big piece of the growth, with users transitioning from analog to IP, better video compression, and installing more and higher resolution cameras. This makes it even more important for new releases to be both backward compatible and future-proof. “While H.265 is slowly becoming the new industry standard in compression technology, VMS systems are in still in the process of adopting and integrating with it. Dahua’s products are all backwards compatible — so when an end user is ready to make the shift to H.265, they have the capability to do it with our products,” said Janet Fenner, Head of North America Marketing for Dahua Technology. Most agree that the current challenge lies not in the lack of growth. “ The

real challenge now is the intensity of competition, the number of competitors, and our need to clearly demonstrate the ways in which Vicon solutions can provide a simpler experience while still comparing favorably in features and performance,” said Bret McGowan, Senior VP of Sales for Vicon Industries.

Moving beyond Hardware Price erosion and commoditization are realities in today’s market. To grow profits, companies traditionally work on improving features such as image quality and light performance. However, many are turning toward alternative non-hardware offerings. “I think the greater challenges are really on the hardware side. The margins are getting smaller because there is so much price competition. Obviously with Chinese companies, there is a more aggressive need to penetrate the market with higher growth projects which are not tailored to high profit margin areas,” said Chong. “ The Internet of Things (IoT) is all about software, sensors and end-to-end solutions. Obviously a lot of sensors and hardware will be there, but the real value is going to be services and software.” “There’s always a pressure on pricing. But if you go back to the conversations with the end customers about solutions

Andrew Elvish, VP, Marketing and Product Manager, Genetec

and really understand what they need, pricing becomes less of a problem,” said Peter Ainsworth, Product General Manager for Video at Tyco Security Products. “No product is an island, every product we sell is ultimately part of a solution, whether this is just cameras, recorders and software, right the way up to a solution that includes video, access control, intrusion, fire and HVAC, because most non-residential buildings have if not all of these, certainly most of them and we are here to service that need of the customer.” This is particularly important in a market where technology develops at such a rapid pace, making differentiation of products on hardware specifications alone difficult. “It’s not about the technology. The base technology for the most part is available to everyone. It’s how you apply it, deliver it,” remarked Benjamin Bryant, Representative for IDIS.

diFFerenTiaTion THroUgH TeCHnoLogy The continuing convergence with IT and shift to IP-based systems is opening up opportunities for multi-level system expansions and management, driving a need in the market for better integration, interconnectivity through the IoT and video analytics. These trends offer customers more choices, and add more value for and beyond traditional security.

Growth for Top 25 Italian Security Leaders a&s Italy and analyst KF Economics (K Finance Group) recently released the fifth edition of the top 25 Italian Security Leaders. Several players in the security industry remained unchanged in their rankings from the previous year, while some have gained momentum. The security market saw constant growth over the last three years with producers, systems integrators and distributors all seeing growth at different rates.

ased on 2016’s revenue, the first seven positions in the classification are unchanged compared with 2015. At the top are the three Lombard companies Notifier Italia (with a growth of 7 percent and a revenue of US$ 51.5 million), Project Automation (a growth of 11 percent with $47.8 million) and Hesa. There are only three new entries in the top 25 companies by revenue: in 22nd place is SICE Telecomunicazioni, in 23rd place is Videotrend, while in 24th place is Bosch Security Systems.

CLASSIFICATION BY INCOME GROWTH The top 25 classification by growth (and also by profitability) only considers small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and corporate companies that had an income in 2015 of at least $5.6 million as smaller-sized companies can show more volatile trends. Given this, the SMEs and corporations in the sample showed an average growth of 9.4 percent compared with 2014 revenues. Among these, the top 25 companies showed an increased average growth of 31 percent (see Table 2). These companies have on average paid a price in terms of profitability (8 percent of EBITDA/V), placing them slightly below the average for SMEs and corporations in the sample (8.5 percent). They are nevertheless above the overall average for the entire sample (6.5 percent). It is normal to see a high level of rotation when companies are classified according to income growth. Looking back at 2015 financial statements, many companies showed strong growth from 2013 to 2014. At the top is Hikvision (with an increase in income of 90 percent compared to 2014); in 2015, it was in fourth place with an increase in its 2014 revenue of no less than 98 percent compared to 2013. The second in the list with a growth of 64 percent is Aikom Technology, which was ranked at number 11 the previous year. A new entry on this list is Microcontrol It needs to be pointed out that, to reflect the reality of the Italian security market as faithfully as possible, only firms, Italian or multinational, that had an Italian value-added tax (VAT) number and that were entirely dedicated to security were included. Also, all monetary figures have been converted from the euro to the US dollar at 1:1.11, the exchange rate on May 17 when this report was compiled.

Electronic. This company was not listed in 2014 because it did not achieve the threshold revenue of $5.6 million; this year it is in third place with a growth of 61 percent.

PROFITABILITY EXPRESSED BY THE EBITDA MARGIN EBITDA — earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization — is a fundamental indicator of profitability. The significance of this indicator is that it indicates a company’s capacity to generate value from its core business. Unlike other indicators, EBITDA is not affected by aspects linked to the company’s financial and extraordinary management. This set of factors proved substantially “stable” over time. Many of the leaders were already at the top in the previous years (see Table 3). This shows that the creation of high profit margins is a slow process, beginning with constant attention to cost reduction, followed by focus on the products and services that generate the highest value, leading finally to the creation of a brand that enables high margins to be achieved even in a highly competitive market. The first six entities retained their position from last year. Still in first place is systems integrator CONSIAG ($6.7 million with EBITDA/sales at 64 percent), while INIM Electronics ($25.5 million, EBITDA/sales at 36 percent) remains second. Combivox SRL, on the other hand, climbs to third place ($10 million with EBITDA at 31 percent); it was previously listed at fifth place.

Producers showed a higher EBITDA/sales than distributors. A manufacturing enterprise with a unique and sustainable advantage can increase its value by as much as 25 percent, while an equally excellent distributor would find it hard to go beyond 10 percent. This observation confirms that the profitability values in this classification are excellent, testifying to the fact that the security sector is a highly profitable one.

PROFITABILITY AND GROWTH The anti-intruder system producer category is the profit margins leader with an excellent 17.8 percent. However, it is substantially stable (with an average growth of 3.9 percent). Video surveillance systems producers are once again at the top for growth (17.2 percent), but pay the price in terms of profitability (“only” 5.2 percent) (see Table 4). This goes to prove that it is difficult to achieve exceptional profit margins and exceptional growth at the same time. An all-out push for growth is inclined to sacrifice efficiency for effectiveness to increase market share by pursuing orders with poor margins or acquiring operators with low margins. Compared with last year, the sampling situation in the systems integrators sector has stabilized. The upward leap from 2013 to 2014 was mainly due to the entry of a large player. While systems integrators and producers have maintained constant profitability (EBITDA/sales), their growth has slowed. Distributors still declared growth in double figures (average

Hacking Access Control in Enterprise Environments A strong access control system is a vital part of an enterprise environment. Yet for some reason these systems are often easy to hack. At this year’s ISC West, Valerie Thomas, Executive Security Consultant at Securicon addressed how hackers are accessing physical access control systems (PACS) and what enterprises can do to protect their systems from attack. BY the a&s Editorial Team

hysical access control systems (PACS) are an important part of any enterprise environment’s overall security plan. Controlling who accesses what, where and when helps keep a facility secure, while also controlling flow and keeping track of those on the premises. Unfortunately, enterprises often install systems without having them thoroughly tested before deployment, thus leaving vulnerabilities in the system and, therefore, open to attack. Valerie Thomas, Executive Security Consultant at Securicon addressed the different ways PACS are vulnerable in enterprise environments and what security personnel can do to guard against such attacks.

OverlOOking the Cyber COmpOnent

JUNE 2017 ● www.asmag.com

Cyberattacks are often overlooked during the planning and execution of a PACS. Such a system relies heavily on IT; however, there is a general lack of understanding of IT in the security industry, according to Thomas. Thomas explained a PACS is usually installed by a third-party contractor whose job is done once the system has been installed; however, there is not necessarily a security step that is involved in the installation. Furthermore, although these systems rely on pieces of cyber and network, there are rarely cybersecurity professionals involved in the design, planning, or deployment of such systems. “What ends up happening is different people are made responsible for maintaining these pieces, but usually somebody doesn’t look at this holistically,” Thomas said.

46

Thomas noted that trying to secure against only one type of attack method does not do the end user any good. By only focusing on getting the latest and greatest credentials and card stock because they have yet to be cloned, enterprises are leaving the rest of its infrastructure open to a lot of vulnerabilities that could actually end up being much worse. But why does this happen? According to Thomas, there is a lack of persons in the industry that understand how the system should encompasses everything together. Without a cyber representative involved in the network set up of a PACS to ensure the proper security measures were put in place, the resulting network ends up with system weaknesses, making it easily accessible to hackers.

The

Cyber Effect on Physical Security This year at ISC West, Matthew Rosenquist, Cybersecurity Strategist at Intel, addressed how cyber is affecting every industry, including physical security. BY the a&s Editorial Team

JUNE 2017 ● www.asmag.com

yberattacks are, and have been, a problem for decades; however, as the world becomes increasingly more connected and reliant on connected technology, the threat of such cyberattacks will only continue to grow. Not only will threats continue to grow, the damage inflicted by such attacks will become all the more devastating. As a society, our love of technology has made all aspects of our lives susceptible to intrusion. No one can deny that smart technology and connectivity have increased efficiency and productivity. At the same time, we’ve also made sacrifices to reap these benefits. We’ve taken less care about what information we release and put out for the whole world to see, and by doing so we don’t even realize we’ve left ourselves wide open to attack. During his keynote speech at ISC West, Matthew Rosenquist, Cybersecurity Strategist at Intel, said, “As technology value goes up, the ability for somebody to use that in a bad way also goes up. There’s two sides to that coin. You can’t separate it, you want to, but we can’t.” He elaborated on this idea by addressing how the advantages of increased connectivity has also lead to a growing number of cyberattacks across all industries, including physical security, impacting every part of our lives.

Cyber ImpaCts every Industry No industry is exempt from cyberattack. To highlight this point, Rosenquist provided examples of cyberattacks on industries from critical infrastructure to automotive to finance.

48

Critical Infrastructure Cyberattacks on critical infrastructure have the potential to cause billions of dollars in damage as well as loss of life. Rosenquist noted the recent cyberattacks on Ukraine’s electrical grid. The first attack, in December 2015, was considered the first successful cyberattack on a power grid. News outlets reported approximately 230,000 people were affected by the hack. Almost exactly a year later, the Ukrainian power grid was hacked again. These incidents further highlighted the potential damage that could be caused by such a breech in security.

Automotive With autonomous cars gaining public interest, the need to protect them from cyberattacks is crucial for the safety of the passengers and everyone else on the roads. Up to 10 million autonomous cars could be on the road in the next couple
