CONGRESS TO REVIVE NRI MINISTRY
The Indian missions abroad had dedicated staff to deal with the grievances of NRI’s related to any issues. The idea is to set up similar stafϔing who can help the NRI community in the ϔield of Education, Health, Working Conditions, need for ϔinancial services and safe return to India in case of any emergencies….reports Taha Coburn-Kutay

he announcement of re-establishment of Ministry of Overseas Indians in the Congress Manifesto is welcome news for Non-resident Indians. The erstwhile ministry was active in the previous regimes before the NDA government decided it to merge it with Ministry of External Affairs. Non resident Indians remitted approximately 80 Billion US dollars to India in the fiscal year 201718 which is approximately 3.5% of India’s GDP. This is significant amount for which if the Indian government has a dedicated ministry that will give further confidence to Non-resident Indians to have a home away from home. Congress has also promised to remove Angel tax for Start-up businesses in India which will further benefit the Indian economy via investments in to Indian start up ecosystem from NRI’s. The
ministry will play a vital part in monitoring these investments and businesses for the NRI community. The single window clearance for NRI to start businesses in India was a part of MOI previously which helped a lot of NRI’s to establish businesses in India without any issues locally. The Indian missions abroad had dedicated staff to deal with the grievances of NRI’s related to any issues. The idea is to set up similar staffing who can help the NRI community in the field of Education, Health, Working Conditions, need for financial services and safe
return to India in case of any emergencies. The appointment of monitoring teams of NRI’s to check the progress of missions abroad is one of the things proposed in the manifesto. This is an important and herculean task as missions really need to be monitored for taking care of its citizens in a foreign land. NRI’s have over the years excelled both in business and professionally making a global mark. This needs to be recognised and Ministry of Overseas Indians will play a big role in reporting this back to the Indian Government to recognise these NRI’s by awarding and rewarding them. We need to have dedicated service for our citizens and that is what has been promised in Congress manifesto of today. Let’s hope that this is delivered and we NRI’s have something to look up to in our adopted homeland.
