CHALLENGES • Dilemma between heritage preservation and development > Residents’ sentiment seems to favour development > Residents own lack of historical knowledge/appreciation

QUESTIONS & ISSUES • Misperception all this time? > Certain elements of traditional Malay architecture - not completely authentic designs • Does (long term) ownership automatically means cultural heritage preservation?

RECOMMENDATIONS • Heritage conservation campaign among the locals • Assistance for restoration of traditional houses • Tourism – “Village in the City”

Strong intangible values

> Bullock cart, (mock) wedding, traditional games, “gotong-royong spirit

Encik Sulaiman Bin Manan • Inherited bullock cart making skill from his father when he was 15 years old • Sells bullock carts and cater for tourism • Malacca bullock cartfilled with art

CHALLENGES • Low demand > for trade > for learning to make it • Lack of historical knowledge about the bullock cart

RECOMMENDATIONS • Promote more aggressively of bullock cart as a tourism package • Emphasise the historical aspects of this art • Highlight this art through various means and channels

Gazetted as heritage sites Villagers strong sense of responsibility towards cultural heritage preservation Generate source of income

Encik Abdul Rahim Haji Hashim • Descendant of the founder of Kampung Morten – Dato’ Othman Muhammad Noh • Currator/owner of Villa Sentosa

CHALLENGES • Rely heavily on their new generation • Invisible intangible cultural heritage • Low publicity

RECOMMENDATIONS • Heritage conservation campaign for Kampung Morten young generation • Cultural centre • Tap into their existing resources to expand publicity

CONCLUSION Different rate of preservation Necessary to adopt cultural heritage to modern requirement Preserve both abstract & concrete aspects of cultural heritages Requires effort by all parties
