n September we see the annual Heritage Open Days across the UK, and our area is no exception for the amount of interesting and absorbing events that have been arranged. I have given you just a small taste of what’s on offer from 12th-15th September on pages 30 and 32, but don’t forget to pick up a booklet from local outlets, or go online to www.molevalley.gov.uk/media/pdf/d/b/HOD_Booklet_Web_2013.pdf and download a copy. I popped down to Gimcrack Hill on Sunday 4th August to watch one of the Prudential RideLondon cycle events, as ever the atmosphere was fantastic and I’m looking forward to picking my spot again for the Tour of Britain cycle race which will be thundering through Ashtead and Leatherhead on Saturday 21st September - more details can be found on page 20. I always make an effort to wear bright clothes so I can clearly spot myself on television when I playback the race. How sad is that? Our friends at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust are organising a wellie walk on 14th September in order to raise money to protect Kenya’s wildlife, including rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned infant elephants to return to the wild when grown. You can see a photo of these little orphans on page 34, it really is just heartbreaking. Another of my favourite charities, the Celia Cross Greyhound Trust are holding their annual fundraising events on 8th and 14th September this year. The team there were thrilled with the turnout last year and mentioned that quite a few people turned up as a result of the article which appeared in the A&L Local this time last year. Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is taking place on the 27th and if you are interested in raising money for this worthwhile charity, then it’s not too late to pick up a ‘Coffee Morning Kit’ from them (p.12). Abdool has successfully opened his long-awaited pharmacy on the Street and, at the same time, I was contacted by the Citizens Advice Bureau informing me that they will have an in-house adviser available at the Buckley Pharmacy on the first Tuesday of every month. A few days ago I spoke with Feras Alshaker who is the Project Manager at Southern Railway, who filled me in on what was happening at Ashtead station, and he very kindly furnished me with an update which appears on page 82. Summer will soon be at an end and we will be blessed with all the gorgeous technicolour wonder that is autumn. I’ve already bought my warm dressing gown for winter... I don’t know what it is about the UK, but we seem to bear winter much better than a stifling summer - I know I do! Still musn’t grumble - at least this year my tomatoes actually ripened! www.ashteadresidents.org.uk What are Tesco doing about their site in The Street, Ashtead? It hardly seems possible that the first planning application submitted by Tesco Plc to develop their site in The Street, Ashtead goes back to August 2008. After several attempts a revised application received “Grant for Planning Permission” by MVDC last November. Subsequently we have been frustrated by the lack of action and as residents of Ashtead you are within your rights to ask – What happens next? This is a question your committee has pondered over whilst endeavouring to obtain worthwhile information from Tesco. Finally we had a meeting in May with Beth Greenhouse, Corporate Affairs Manager that followed an announcement by the company that they would be mothballing sites in the UK and with a lack of activity in Ashtead we felt there was cause for concern. At least we were assured that Ashtead was not on the list. Therefore we wanted to know what happens next and when could we expect action at the old Esso site that has become an eyesore and embarrassment to our village. We have tried some tactical manoeuvring and put forward the following requests:-

• Tidy up the site by cutting down the weeds and

making it look acceptable by means of landscaping

• If there is no plan to develop the site within six •

months we have requested that the area should be enclosed with good quality fencing Also we have asked how does Tesco plan to establish a community partnership with the village?

All we can report is that our requests have been referred to the Asset and Estate team by Beth but as at the time of writing we regret to say that there has been

no evidence of action. Please be assured that we shall not allow matters to rest. In fact as a further leverage we have brought to the attention of Tesco the Tour of Britain cycle race that passes through Ashtead in September and with the international media in attendance we feel that Tesco would not wish us to promote their irresponsible attitude towards our village. Additionally we have asked our Councillors to investigate if there is a legal obligation for which Tesco could be held liable for the state of their site.

A Reminder

Surrey continues to be the “Cycling Capital of England”. On 4th August we saw the successful 100 mile RideLondon event couples with the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic that mostly followed the Olympic route from last year. That is not the end; on 21st September the Surrey stage of the Tour of Britain starts on Epsom Downs and passes through Ashtead at 12.15 pm en route to Guildford via the Surrey hills.

On 30th July the committee was delighted to host a party at Ashtead Cricket Club for our Road Stewards in appreciation of their continuing support. Chairman, Jim Malynn thanked all present and emphasised how important our network of volunteers is to the well being of the Association.

THE LEATHERHEAD RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION A Brief Sound of Silence, Cycles Rumble Through, the Roar of More Traffic to Follow At the time of writing, the Prudential RideLondon Cycle Race has just ended. Some of us enjoyed the spectacle of over 16000 cyclist pedalling through Leatherhead. The abundant energy of many people for numerous charitable causes exhibited true dedication. Some of my neighbours and I cheered for 3 hours and were sorry our voices would not withstand more shouting. Noticeably, few people observed the event. Some think only of the inconvenience of road closures and disruption the race causes. We were told that around 40 million pounds would go into the Surrey economy as a result of hosting the cycle race. This is far short of the over 700 million pounds brought by the 2012 Olympics games. However, in this time of austerity let's just hope that the money gives a boost to the local economy. One of the benefits of the road closures was a few hours of almost complete silence. There was no roar of motorway noise or hum of engines near or far. Briefly we were reminded of the Leatherhead of past times. By Monday we were brought back to reality. Unfortunately, part of that reality is the planned development of the Barnett Wood Allotments and the adjacent land belonging to Merton College. Whatever is planned for the site, further traffic and congestion will be generated. The nearby roads and motorways are already straining under an infrastructure that fails to cope. Some people are being exposed to noise and air pollution as cars create a car park like effect on key roads at peak times. Local people have petitioned the Council to cancel the plans to move the allotments from Leatherhead

to Ashtead. Over 2700 people signed the petition when given the opportunity on three occasions. Because the 'release of green belt land' and the 'development of allotment land' are highly emotive issues, many more would have been willing to sign. A big disappointment was that after delivering the petition to two groups at MV District Council, the petitioners were not allowed to hear the debate on the subject. Both MV Officers and Councillors expressed disappointment that EU rules on Procurement require that decisions be done without public exposure. By the time of publication, we will know which organisation has been given the right to put forward a plan for developing the site. Unfortunately, the petitioners had to wait two weeks to receive any information, although decisions will affect them profoundly. It is also a concern that the Council is giving the green light to the development of the Green Belt at this time. After all, the result of the Green Belt Boundary Review will not be published until December. In the meantime, the Fortyfoot Safety Campaign has come up with ideas upon which all parties can agree. For the first time in over one hundred years all involved have a common objective. The campaign's aim is the immediate repair of forty plus potholes for the safety of the children who are bused in daily. They also seek the long promised adoption of the road by Surrey County Council. LRA Open meeting - Monday 2nd September, Letherhead Institute, 7:30pm. Ashtead Community Vision Site Allocation – how is this assessed? Good News! The Forum has been officially designated by Mole Valley, which means that we can now carry out overseeing the production of the Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP). We have responded to requests that people would like to see profiles of Forum members so they know a bit more about who is doing the work and why. If you look at the website ‘About Us’ section you will see there is quite a cross section of the community involved. One of the comments made by the councillors at the designation meeting was that they would like to see more young (18-34) people represented, as would we. If you are in that age bracket, or know someone who is please urge them to get involved by joining the Forum. This is after all, about planning for the future of Ashtead for the next 15 years which will be most important to this age group – can they find or afford a house, and will there be sufficient school places? These are some of the questions we are grappling with. We often accuse politicians of short term thinking, so this is our opportunity to plan for the longer term and to have local input into the planning process right from the start – an exciting opportunity which is the reason why many people have joined the Forum. ACV have been awarded a grant of £5000 by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and have also been allocated some direct support, in the form of much needed help and advice, which is to be provided by Planning Aid England. At the August ACV meeting Stella Scrivener from Planning Aid England came to talk to us. Stella suggested holding a workshop in September on site selection and sustainability appraisal which is a very difficult part of the process. It is really important to understand that we have to have a clear, robust method for doing this and it must be completely transparent and fair so that all areas are assessed by the same method. Just because an area is being assessed does not mean that it is appropriate or even available for development. In fact quite the reverse, the assessment may well show that it is quite unsuitable for development for any number of reasons.

All land areas must be judged on 19 criteria that we are using based on the Mole Valley Site Appraisal Toolkit. (see ACV website ‘Documents & Information’) Examples of the kind of assessments that need to be made are: measuring how far a site is to the shops or the station; finding out if there any archaeological or historic features, or unusual ecological features; what is the access to the site like; does the area flood. The group is aiming to provide a draft Green Belt Boundary Review and the Housing Allocations Plans to the Forum in November before carrying out further public consultation and forwarding to Mole Valley for consideration in their Land Allocation Plan for the district. Run to Live Beginnersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Running Groups Running is simple. After all, it's just one step in front of the other. Then repeat. Until you are done. And there is the crux. Define 'done'. With fartlek and speedwork and hill reps and threshold and tempo and RPE and effort and pace and race and time trial and HR Zone and always watching the clock and COMPETITION, we can make it really complicated. But really, it is just one step in front of the other. For a beginner then, it's not surprising when faced with so much information it can become overwhelming and 'I can' quickly becomes 'I can't'. Often beginners are inspired by others to run. Maybe a running friend offering encouragement or a great role model, Jessica Ennis or Paula Radcliffe come to mind here. But, running is not a team sport and trying to keep up with your encourager at this point can be overwhelming and distressing at times. Running needs you to be selfish. That is one of the best parts of the sport. In our busy lives, when do we ever have time just for us? We have always said that running is as much a mental sport as physical. Sometimes more so. With those barriers to overcome don't impose other stresses on yourself when starting out (or returning from injury for that matter, the same things apply here too). Keep it simple.

‘The Future Begins Now’ “The only function of economic forecasting is to make astrology look respectable”

Despite the words of Galbraith it is always necessary to look ahead and plan for the future. Surrey County Council is attempting to do this and their document “Surrey Future” describes what they are doing and how they will attempt to do this and engage with all parts of Surrey society in doing so. Recent figures from the ONS (Office of National Statistics) show that Britain’s population has hit a record 63.7million, with over half of the increase over the past twelve months being in London, the South East and East England. In Surrey we live in one of the wealthiest parts of one of the wealthiest economic areas (i.e. the South East of England) within Western Europe, not just in the UK. However we are not doing as well as we have in the past. The S.E. of England has slipped from 12 th to 16th (out of 118) European Regions in respect of Competitiveness, and Surrey’s share of inward investment for the South East is below that of, for example, Berkshire and Hampshire. Clearly Surrey County Council wants to remedy this situation – but these remedies will have consequences for us. And the consequences will be in respect of the provision of housing, schooling, healthcare, transport, shopping and employment. For example the population of Surrey is projected to increase by 9% over the next 20 years – with employment growth forecast at 11%. And some of the employment needs will have to be satisfied by people living outside Surrey – i.e. in Kent, Hampshire and Sussex – where population growth is estimated at 10%. This will put even further pressure on the transport infrastructure (roads and railways.)

So what about us in the northern part of Mole Valley?

Earlier this year Surrey County Council undertook a Consultation Programme under the broad heading of “Surrey Future.” Details of this, and the supporting documentation, can be found on the Surrey County Council web site. Perhaps surprisingly our area does not feature a great deal. The document does contain the following statement in respect of where we live: “The schemes listed below are also proposed to address the problems identified with the existing transport infrastructure within the district. They look to encourage more sustainable forms of transport and to minimise the need to travel:

Junction improvements to the Leatherhead gyratory A package of schemes to address transport issues in Ashtead, Bookham, Fetcham and Leatherhead including passenger transport, highway improvements, parking measures, pedestrian and cycle facilities A package of schemes in rural areas providing highways improvements”

The devil, no doubt, will be in the detail. No mention yet of pressures on the Green Belt. At time of writing decisions in respect of Cherkeley Court and the allotment site between Ashtead and Leatherhead have yet been made public. And these too may have an impact on our wider environment. I began by saying that we live in one of the wealthiest regions of Western Europe. But our part of Surrey is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The challenge is in maintaining one aspect without damaging the other – and vice versa. Interesting times indeed!

The Tour of Britain Cycle Race Stage 7: Epsom - Guildford Saturday 21st September - 12pm-3.45pm The Stage 7 section of the Tour of Britain commences at Epsom Downs Racecourse at 12 noon, reaching The Street in Ashtead by 12.15pm, then Leatherhead (into Epsom Rd through to Gimcrack Hill/Dorking Rd) at 12.17pm, up to Gt Bookham via Young St and Guildford Rd at 12.23pm, through Effingham at 12.26pm and entering Dorking from Ranmore Common at around 12.43pm (Chalkpit Lane, West St, South St - not the High Street). The race finishes in Guildford High Street around 3.45pm. The event will be featured live on ITV4 and British Eurosport. Road Closures The vast majority of the race route is delivered under a temporary rolling road closure, enforced by police and the National Escort Group (the same group who worked on the Olympic road races in Surrey) – 62 motorbikes in all – who initiate and maintain the road closures as the race approaches. These motorbikes close the roads in front of the race, allowing it to pass through without interference from non-race traffic. Once the cyclists have all left an area, the roads will open again. In practice roads may be closed between 10 minutes and half an hour, depending on the terrain, weather and race location. Closed roads will not open until the final vehicle in the convoy (known as the `broom wagon´) has passed.

Mole Valley Police Column It’s a scam

It is sometimes easy to forget that items stored in garages, sheds and outbuildings can be of quite high value – lawn mowers, leaf blowers, hedge trimmers etc. If they are not kept in a secure location, they can be an easy target for thieves.

Fraudsters want your PIN and bank card 1. The Phone Call A fraudster telephones you claiming to be from either your bank or the Police. They tell you that your bank card details have been used fraudulently.

We are carrying out additional patrols and stopping and checking any vehicles which appear suspicious in any way but we must rely on members of the public to do everything possible to protect their own property.

2. The PIN Number They suggest that you hang up and ring the bank/police to ensure the call is genuine. Do not be fooled by this as they stay on the line. They then tell you to read out or key in your PIN.

Sheds should be secured properly with sturdy bolts and padlocks. Perhaps consider marking your garden equipment distinctly with your postcode as this will make the items less attractive to a would-be thief?

3. The Courier They send a taxi/courier to you to collect your bank card as they say they need it for the investigation. With this card and your PIN they can spend your money.

Another option could be security marking your property which, in the event that it is stolen and then recovered, could make it much easier to reunite with the rightful owner.

West Enders exhibition and book promotion. The Bland family owned Randalls Park Estate from 1811 - 1856 when it was sold to pay gambling debts. Nathaniel Bland helped to start the Mansion Grammar School (the Register Office and Library). He owned 15,000 acres in County Kerry. The story contains a murder, elopement, bigamy and legal battles. The family were related to Mrs Jordan, the actress, who in turn is related to the Queen, David Cameron & Boris Johnson. The book ‘West Enders’ will be available at the exhibition. Wesley House

Bull Hill, Leatherhead KT22 7AH Wesley House is named after the great reforming preacher and founder of Methodism, John Wesley. He visited Leatherhead in 1791 where it is believed he delivered his famous last sermon. Wesley House is a Grade II listed Art Deco building built in 1935. The ‘Council Chamber’, which has been restored to its original condition, can be viewed with many of its original features after first walking through the imposing entrance which shows off its distinctive Art Deco style. Join a jumbo-sized wellie walk for Africa’s endangered elephants Saturday 14th September

On Saturday 14th September, the locally based David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) is inviting people to pull on their bestpair of wellington boots and take part in their ‘Wellies4Ellies’ walk. It’s a three or six mile sponsored walk across Happy Valley along the Old Surrey Downs, Old Coulsdon to raise funds for their projects to protect Africa’s threatened elephants and wildlife. Suitable for all ages and fitness levels, the day promises to be a great way to spend time with family and friends with prizes to be won for participants who raise the most sponsorship money and family games in the afternoon. The walk will start between 11am – 1pm and finish at Happy Valley Car Park, Old Coulsdon in Surrey. Everyone is invited to take part in the Wellies 4 Ellies Walk and - well-behaved dogs are welcome too! All monies raised from the event will go to the DSWT and its projects to protect Kenya’s wildlife, including its life-saving work rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned infant elephants to return to the wild when grown. The DSWT, based in Leatherhead, relies completely on donations and fundraising support to continue its work protecting wildlife and habitats in Kenya. Since 1987, the DSWT has successfully hand reared 145 elephants and in addition to their Orphan’s Project, the DSWT also operates Anti-Poaching Teams, Mobile Veterinary Teams and Community Outreach projects. Howeverin recent years, ivory poachers have decimated elephant and rhinoceros populations across Africa leading to an increase in milk-dependent baby elephants, orphaned by the trade in ivory.As Rob Brandford says, ‘the stories of many elephants we rescue is borne out of tragedy but with your help, we can achieve something incredible for Kenya’s orphaned infant elephants. So don your wellies, come along and join us!’

Celia Cross Greyhound Trust Fundraising Events Sunday 8th & Saturday 14th September The weather this year may have been wet, cold and miserable, but at Sun Valley Kennels, home to the most cherished rescue dogs, things were all cosy. In their centrally heated beds, our dogs were as snug as a bug. Although that does not mean we can relax, there are always dogs in need of our help; just one example of a needy friend was “Daisy” an elderly greyhound that was found in appalling condition, she had clearly been mistreated and neglected. Daisy came to us extremely underweight, covered in wounds, many of them suspiciously looking like cigarette burns along her back. Her nails were so long they were curling around her feet. Daisy was in much need of lots of TLC. It took months for Daisy to gain back her full health, and lots of cuddles from the visitors to help her trust again... But she did, and she is now living proof that there is life in the old dog yet!!! Daisy is now living with her new family, and has found the love and security she should have had before we found her. Sadly Daisy’s case is not a one off, and we are often faced dealing with reality that this cruelty to the dogs still carries on every day. The Common Column Once again, September is here - one of the busiest and most exciting months in the Ashtead Common events calendar! You may or may not be aware that Ashtead Common is home to some nationally important heritage features, including a Roman villa complex and triangular earthwork. The villa site was first excavated in 1924, with further work in the 1960s. More recently, a new series of excavations was started in 2006, led by Surrey Archaeological Society in partnership with the City of London Corporation. 2013 is the final year in what has been a fascinating seven-year project to unearth the secrets of the Ashtead Common Roman villa. Key features that will be looked at this year include the tile kiln complex, the nature of a new building to the west of the villa which was discovered in 2010, the nature and function of an enclosure wall which has been identified in places around the complex and a reassessment of the villa ‘house’. Whether you’ve been keeping up with the project over the years, or you’re a first timer, you’re in for a real treat. In line with the Archaeologists in action national Heritage Open Days, volunteers will be leading guided walks up to the site of the Roman villa complex where you have the unique opportunity to see the opened trenches and the remains of the Roman architecture. There will be three walks running on each day, Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September, at 10am, noon and 2pm and booking is essential on 01372 279083. The dedicated team of archaeologists will be present to explain the findings of their excavations and answer your questions about life on Ashtead Common 2000 years ago. The Ashtead Common Volunteers will also be providing some welcome refreshments in their tea tent, with drinks and home-made cakes available for a small donation. Money collected goes to local charities so please bring your pennies for a good cause. We hope to see you there!

Fake it ‘til you make it Ruth scrutinized her ‘bikini body’ in the bedroom mirror and,as her eyes slid down from her face, Ruth’s mood followed in the same direction. Her shoulder length brown hair was fine, her face wasn’t too bad, her arms and shoulders were passable but after that everything was beginning to droop. Pregnancy and breastfeeding had taken its toll and she felt a fleeting wave of irrational resentment as she frowned at the image in front of her. Ruth’s legs were a slight compensation but she could already see the beginning of varicose veins and the dappled evidence of cellulite on her thighs. They were off to Spain in a few days and Ruth was determined to get a suntan. However, this pale, pasty and winter worn body wouldn’t do at all. She knew it was too late to make a dramatic difference to anything that wobbled but she could do something about the colour. A fake tan would cover a multitude of sins and definitely prevent that ‘I’m on the first day of my holiday’ pallor by the swimming pool.

Champagne or Ink – cheers to that! We’ve all heard by now that printer ink can be more expensive than the finest Champagne. If you consider how little ink is in a typical modern print cartridge compared to a 750ml bottle of champers, then there is certainly a lot of truth in this tale. Alan McKenna, down at the newly independent INKplus in Barnett Wood Lane, Ashtead, explains that saving money on printer ink starts with buying the right printer. The big printer manufacturers would love you to buy their £30 cheap as chips printer and very often don’t make a profit on the sale. That’s because they will then go on to sell you their not so cheap ink cartridges with a few millilitres of ink at an eye-watering price – often more than the printer originally cost. When choosing a new printer, once you’ve decided what features you want – copying, scanning, wireless, web, airprint for ipads, and so on – there really is little to differentiate in terms of print quality. Most brands will produce a lovely clear and vivid print whether for business letters or for those precious holiday snaps. So this is the time to think about the cost of the ink because you will spend many times the price of the printer on ink in the coming years. The main points to investigate are: • Does the printer take single ink tanks or just one tank with all three colours in it? Single inks generally give you much more ink of each colour and cost less to replace. • Is there an XL version of the inks available? These will initially cost more but will usually last longer and have a significantly lower cost per page. • And, most importantly, can the inks be refilled or replaced with a good quality alternative brand so that you are not tied into the printer manufacturer’s expensive inks? The advice from Alan is simple – take some advice! Come to your local independent ink shop, INKplus in Ashtead (see advertisement opposite), and ask all the right questions. Cheers!

Recent Open Day gives £12k boost to Wildlife Aid The Open Day on 7th July gave members of the public a unique look behind-the-scenes at the WAF wildlife hospital in Randalls Road and was an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the charity that has over the years saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of wild animals. WAF founder and chief executive Simon Cowell MBE said: "We are hugely appreciative of all those who came to Open Day and donated to the charity on the day. Thanks to the generosity of the public the money raised will help us continue caring for injured and orphaned wildlife and give them a second chance." Open Dance Auditions for Dorking Panto On Saturday 28 September, dance auditions will be held for Dorking Halls’ spectacular panto Aladdin which will run for 15 performances from 21st-29th December. Enthusiastic local dancers aged 8 and over are needed to perform alongside the professional cast, including Aaron Sidwell (pictured left) from Eastenders and Chris Stanton from CBBC’s M.I. High. Those aged 8-11 will be auditioned at 11am (registration from 10.30am), 12-15 year olds will be auditioned at 1pm (registration from 12.30pm) and those aged 16 and above will be auditioned at 3pm (registration from 2.30pm). All are welcome – there is no upper age limit! Producer Jezz Weatherall, who is excited about this year’s show, said: “We’re looking for local performers with dance experience and a strong jazz technique. They’ll need to bring appropriate clothing and footwear to their audition and be available to rehearse every Sunday and Monday evening during November and December as well as for the pantomime itself.” Director Guy Pascall said: “It’s going to be great fun for all the family. Aladdin is a really magical pantomime, including the Genie of the Lamp and of course a flying carpet, and ever since Disney sprinkled their magic touch on the story it’s become a firm Christmas favourite with audiences. Leatherhead Morning Women’s Institute The meeting opened with the minutes of the last meeting being read. This year’s resolution by the WI to support the revival of High Street shops was approved by 87%, which is very encouraging. A trip to a Christmas marketing in Chichester in December is planned which means our Christmas lunch will now be on 5th December. A cooling thought on a very hot day! The programme for 2014 is being compiled and suggestions for future events welcomed. Our entertainment was provided by Pam Barton, a local lady, and was entitled ‘Musical Snippets’. Pam brought a selection of CDs which comprised of classical music from bygone days. The programme featured tracks from famous composers of the age. It included a composition by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and his connections with Dorking. Next month we will have our usual tea party in Betty’s garden - nice weather please. Our meetings are held on the fourth Thursday in the month at Leatherhead Parish Church Hall at 10.15am and visitors are always welcome. For more information ring Betty on 01372 374570.

Ballands Hall (formerly The Rectory), The Street, Fetcham

Ballands Hall, Fetcham, formerly the Rectory once home to the Moon family, is now divided into separate residences. It was built in the late seventeenth century with alterations in the next two centuries. In a Particulars of Sale dated 1788 the rectory is described as ‘one of the finest parsonage houses in Surrey. The Ballands Hall estate was sold in 1919. There had been a sale of the contents of the house in 1911, which gave a good impression of the layout and size of the house at that time: an entrance hall which led into the Library and the Morning Room, with the Dining Room and Drawing Room on the first floor . There were as many as 16 bedrooms on the top floor of the house. However , the 1919 sale catalogue is more comprehensive, because it includes the house itself and 23 acres of land, with 13 bedrooms ( I wonder what happened to the other three) and dressing rooms, a suite of reception rooms plus valuable building sites and ‘picturesque country cottages. The buyers, Mr. and Mrs. Julian, are recorded as being community minded and the annual Christmas Party for local children was held at the Hall. The majority of the building survives in the original form, but the conservatory shown in picture and a ballroom, dating from the nineteenth century were demolished in the 1920s following the 1919 sale.

Transition Ashtead Working towards a sustainable Ashtead

A “Green” deal – saving money and the environment The Government’s Green Deal has been much talked about in the last couple of years but apparently without much action. Things now appear to be happening and there is real opportunity for those who want to improve the energy efficiency of their homes but lack the spare capital to carry out some of the cost-effective upgrades. The aim of the scheme is to allow you to do the improvements and pay for them through your electricity bills at rate that is based on the amount of energy you should have saved.The energy-saving improvements that may be considered for the scheme are insulation – both loft or wall; heating systems (boilers); draughtproofing; double glazing; and some renewable energy technologies (e.g. solar panels). Some of these may also qualify for a cash-back scheme until March 2014. The process is to get an accredited Green Deal Assessor to assess your property’s current energy efficiency. The assessment is impartial and is conducted using industry standard calculations. They produce an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), which shows the current and potential energy efficiency rating of your property, and looks at the way energy is used within your home. The assessor will then generate a Green Deal Advice Report which will include recommendations of potential energy saving improvements and guidance on the estimated energy savings you could expect if these were installed. If you want, this Report can be taken to any Green Deal Provider (the people you get to organize the work and who provide the investment finance). There have been about 45,000 such reports made so far under the scheme. The amount you repay for Green Deal improvements is based on what a typical household of your type is expected to save on energy bills by having such work done. The cost will be shown on a Green Deal Plan (the contract between you and the provider), and will include the interest rate. If you decide to proceed with Green Deal finance and you pass a credit check, the improvements and repayments (including interest) will be documented in the Green Deal Plan. Although Green Deal finance is provided by way of a personal loan, it is not a conventional loan since the bill payer may not be liable for the full capital cost of the improvements, only the charges due whilst they are the electricity bill payer for that property. Under a Green Deal Plan, the cost of the repayments is added to your electricity bill in whatever way you currently pay for your electricity. You are only responsible for making the repayments while you live in the property and are the bill payer. If you move, the next occupant will become responsible for the repayments and the loan will transfer into their name. It can be a great deal and really save you money and lower energy-related pollution. In August 2012 Southern and Network Rail began construction work on enhancements to Ashtead Station. The works were divided into three phases: Phase 1: The extension of the car park to the west of the station to increase the number of parking spaces by more than 50;

Phase 2: The construction of a new station building to the east of the 1970s building in the location of the Victorian station; and Phase 3: The demolition of the 1970s building and the remodelling of the car park to suit the new station building location. The car park extension was completed in October 2012 and the new station building opened to the public on 1 June 2013. You will have noticed that the 1970s station building was demolished in June and we are in the process of remodelling the car park to suit the location of the new station building. This will be completed by the end of the summer holidays.

We have also added a fourth phase which will overlap with the works to the car park. Network Rail have agreed to fund the resurfacing of the platforms, this will include the installing of tactile paving and the regauging of the platforms (this will reduce the stepping distance between the trains and the platforms. This work will take approximately three months, most of which will be carried out at night when the trains are not running.

As part of this process a meeting was arranged at New car park and inset ‘before’ ‘Before’ Ashtead Village Hall hosted by The ARA to meet local residents and discuss the plans. The suggestions made by residents at the meeting meant that the plans were adjusted to address some of the issues raised, in particular around the entrance and exit to the car park. At a later meeting representatives from the ARA chose the colours for the bricks at the station. 82

Support for Landlords Preventing homelessness among young people MoVE Leatherhead Start is a new support and advisory service enabling young homeless people to move to independent private living in their local community, part of a strategic approach to tackling and preventing homelessness in the local area. Roy Chamberlain (pictured below), the new private rented sector officer explained that the aim is to help homeless people, particularly young single people who live on low wages or are in receipt of benefits, and who are generally the lowest priority when it comes to allocating the scarce supply of social housing. MoVE works directly with prospective tenants and private sector landlords in a partnership with local councils, local CAB offices and the Probation Service, to tackle homelessness by supporting landlords who take on more vulnerable people within the community and providing ongoing support to ensure that tenancies are sustained. The scheme is funded and supported by Crisis, the national charity for the single homeless, with additional funding from Mole Valley District Council, Epsom & Ewell Borough Council and the Three Oaks Trust. The service is completely free to both landlords and tenants. MoVE interviews and assesses all tenants before they approach any landlord and try to match tenants to suitable properties. Starting with advice and support to help clients increase their knowledge and experience of being a tenant in the private sector, housing benefit applications are fast tracked and financial security provided in the form of a Bond guarantee in place of a deposit. MoVE can advise on tenant matters and changes in the law to help landlords keep up to date with housing legislation, handle all the paperwork including tenancy agreements and an inventory for the property. Landlords therefore have the chance to let their property promptly, avoiding loss of rent, and have someone on hand to help keep the tenancy on track. MoVE have recently helped a young lady (letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s call her Sally) who was studying for a qualification at Nescot and working part-time in a shop in Epsom. Her family had to move away for work reasons but she needed to stay in the area to complete her studies and had nowhere to live and could not afford a deposit. Sally was assessed as low priority by the council but, with the support of the MoVE scheme, she was able to rent a room in a house with a resident landlady. Assistance was given to the landlady to ensure that the property met with the necessary safety standards and a suitable tenancy agreement was provided. With a Bond guarantee, and her housing benefit claim fast tracked Sally was able to move in quickly and has been able to stay in the area in safe and secure accommodation. Hawthorn Leslie 3837 Preservation Society In the two years or so since the purchase of 3837 by the society we have come an incredibly long way thanks to the generosity and help of the people of Leatherhead and Ashtead. In 2010 the locomotive was purchased from Mole Valley District Council by the Hawthorn Leslie 3837 Preservation Society. This is a small group of local individuals that have come together with the sole aim of saving the locomotive that was at Leatherhead Leisure Centre for 26 years. In the long hard winter of 2010/11 many man hours were spent extricating the loco from its resting place. Moving inch by inch with track being laid and bridges constructed, as what was essentially 28 tons of scrap metal moved inexorably towards the car park and ultimately to The Lavender Line’s Headquarters at Isfield in East Sussex. Many hours have since been spent travelling to Isfield by our loyal band of volunteers, cosmetically restoring 3837, as we agreed with the Lavender Line management team ,finally emerging in her new green livery. With the initial work now complete and the locomotive safe we can now concentrate on raising the necessary funds to return this important piece of Britain’s industrial heritage to steam. Because of the locomotive type and her history she will never be the “commercial draw” of engines the like of Tornado and Flying Scotsman but this does not mean she is of no importance. Many small preserved railways depend on these engines for their survival. Drawing crowds of people to heritage railway lines to revisit their youth or experience the joy of steam, sometimes for the first time. Even in these difficult economic times steam railways are more popular than ever and an important part of society. We see ourselves as custodians of the engine and are always looking to welcome new members into our group. Report fly-tipping We are seeing an increase in reports of flytipping across Mole Valley. This seems to be happening in several locations and we'd really like to disrupt this type of activity as soon as possible. If you see anyone dumping rubbish etc, please call in on 999 at the time you see it, giving as much information as possible location, vehicle index, description of anyone involved etc.. In fact, any information that may help us to tackle this issue and deal with the offenders. You will probably realise that this type of anti-social activity always comes at a cost to someone to clear the fly-tipped rubbish; be that the Council, the National Trust or individuals whose land or property may have been targeted. Ask a gardener, and they’ll tell you that weeds are often the number one menace in their garden. Some weeds are pretty, some less so, but one thing they all have in common is that they are indeed growing where you don’t want them, and may be causing your garden plants to suffer.
