hank you so much for all your good wishes, I am now well on the road to recovery and feeling 100% better. I received a questionnaire from the Epsom & St Helier Trust a few days ago, asking about my experience at the hospital, well they did ask, so I told them... As this magazine was going to print we were hearing the news that all 33 Chilean miners had been recovered from the collapsed mine shaft, what a wonderful story and such a happy ending. On one of my visits to the surgery my nurse said she had been up all night watching each miner being pulled out of the shaft! I think we all felt for their families, and wanted to share in their sheer jubilation when their loved ones appeared. It really has restored my faith in the human spirit. The ladies running the Ashtead Rec campaign are almost there, just one more push for donations and they will achieve their target, their donation slip can be found on page 28. It’s a worthwhile campaign and already they have achieved so much for the little ones. This month I am promoting Wallace & Gromit’s Great British Tea Party which runs from 1st21st December in order to raise thousands of pounds for sick children in hospitals and hospices across the UK. Details of the event and where to obtain your fundraising pack can be found on page 46.

In my experience, concern has been growing in Ashtead about speeding motorists. It is clear that we are far from being alone in this regard, as evidenced for example by the increased priority being given to this subject by Surrey Police and the increasing number of local authorities across the country which have introduced 20 mph speed limits. What could be done?

Reduced Speed Limits Has the time come to lobby for the introduction of 20mph zones or for a 20mph speed limit on some roads, perhaps especially near schools? There seems to be increasing concern at central government level. For example, in a circular issued in December 2009 the Department for Transport said:

THE LEATHERHEAD RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION High Street Consultation Background At the July open meeting of the LRA Andrew Bircher, Corporate Head of Service, MVDC Planning Department, informed those present of a small budget ( mainly 106 Developer Contributions) now available for use to improve the High Street. Those of you who have lived in Leatherhead during the last 10 or so years know that there is hardly a more controversial subject than the High Street. It was Phase Two of the High Street Redevelopment that brought over 500 people to the Leatherhead Theatre to voice their concern over a plan that would virtually close the ancient crossroads in Leatherhead. As a result, a consultant was paid to evaluate the decision making process in Leatherhead and ‘consultation was found to be lacking’. Structural problems under the road surface meant that the idea for a water feature at the west end of the High Street had to be abandoned. Now sometimes referred to as the ‘waterless feature’, it is either loved or hated according to whom you are speaking. Although the iron work is lovely, the stone materials for both the wall and road surface have not withstood the test of time. Have we learned from past experience? Perhaps because of the controversy surrounding Phase Two Redevelopment and partially because of interest expressed at the July LRA open meeting, a consultation process is well under way. Every resident and visitor to Leatherhead will be invited to fill out a questionnaire. Information from that questionnaire will be analysed and used in the final stages of decision making. With the survey on line and in the Help Shop, and other shops in the Town, there is ample opportunity for each of us to express our wishes.

Programme Many of the Traders in the High Street have already been interviewed as to their views. This has been used to help design the consultation process. The questionnaire is due to be available, both online and in paper form during the last weeks of October (so it should be to hand when you read this). The initial analysis will take place before the next meeting Of the Town Centre Advisory Group at the beginning of December. This group represents many of the various organisations in Leatherhead, including the Leatherhead Residents’ Association. There is to be a public Exhibition of the findings in January. The Advisory Group is to meet in February, and their recommendations should go to the March meeting of the MVDC/SCC Partnership meeting. What do you think? The survey does not ask you to identify yourself, but rather to give your postcode, and users of the Town who may reside elsewhere are expected to give valuable insights into its future development. The Residents’ Association will be helping to inform Residents of the Town, of the opportunities, and the consequences of the possible outcomes. This is about the long term future of our Town, and the steps we should take now towards the eventual vision. In framing the questionnaire we have asked that the relevance of each section should be related to the Planning Objectives of the Local Development Framework. It’s your Town, whether you live in it or just use it for shopping, eating or leisure. So it’s your future we are talking about. Cheryl Allen and Hubert Carr

News from Ashtead Youth Centre Life at the Youth Centre continues to be busy, but we have slowed the pace down a little from that of the summer months. We are still finishing the work we started over the summer which includes the Teaching Award from the India Trip (we have a presentation evening on the 8th of November which will be run by the young people themselves), each of the group has put together an impressive portfolio which has been assessed by moderators from Frontier (the people we travelled with) and all have qualified for their Teaching English as a Foreign Language Award.

Another form of recognition we have offered through our summer programme is the Asdan Activities Award. This was delivered during our Summer Adventure Challenge in the Brecon Beacons, where we ask the participants to keep a reflective diary on their experiences and thoughts. When we return, we complete a portfolio following a “plan – do – review” format. This whole process encourages the young people to think about what they have gained from an experience and helps to further develop the thought process of thinking ahead or “what will happen if” - a valuable skill in the navigation of teenage life. We are drawing to the end of the racing season for the Rally Karts. We will soon be starting the classroom work to support the young people in gaining their Open College Network qualifications, these are

qualifications that carry a nationally recognised currency and will enable to access to courses at college or jobs in a related industry. The Karting is probably my favourite project as not only do the young people learn lots of technical, teamwork and communication skills, but they also have a huge amount of fun at the same time. Many of our membership choose to come back as young members of staff and develop their leadership skills. Our regular youth club sessions continue as normal throughout the year and we will always have something interesting going on, this term we are running a Mural Project (sponsored by Ashtead Decorative and Fine Arts Society) on the theme of equality in sport, and a Skate Project.

With the nights drawing in and Christmas looming fast, we remind ourselves that for some people this is not the time of year that Hollywood would like to have us believe and we make a particular effort to be a place where young people feel welcome and cared for.

Ashtead Players retire to the bedroom with Alan Ayckbourn! ‘Bedroom Farce’ 17th-20th November APMH Three bedrooms are presented simultaneously on stage and the action between the three households flows in and out from one to the other during this hilariously hectic night. There are Ernest and Delia, an older, rather eccentric couple celebrating an anniversary with pilchards on toast in bed, Malcolm and Kate, a prank loving, DIY obsessed couple preparing a house-warming party and Nick and Jan, an accident prone pair, the former resting his injured back in bed with much complaining and self pity. The marital disasters of Trevor and Susannah, a truly ‘lunatic’ couple, weave in and out of each of the bedrooms causing mayhem in their wake. The group has also recently launched Young Ashtead Players (YAPs), its youth section for young people between the ages of 12 and 18.

HOUSE PRICES – UP OR DOWN? Welcome to the new Property Blog by local Estate Agent Richard Elphick, an insider’s thoughts on everyone’s favourite dinner party conversation...! The issue of house prices is a hot topic to every homeowner’s heart. Everyone has their opinion, but even that of experienced estate agents is no more accurate about the future of property prices than that of the layman. Prices are subject to micro and macro economics, political direction, taxation, the City, the Euro, the Dollar, and a whole host of tangibles that all combine to influence the market. Of course, a movement in the market can even become a self-fulfilling prophecy when subject to reckless or dramatic media headlines, by the smallest shred of ‘evidence’. Fortunately, most people have by now become somewhat immune to media hype and speculation, and look to the fundamentals of the economy to try to gain an understanding of the market - which still eludes most of us! Ironically one indicator that is often misinterpreted is the one which is usually hailed as the most reliable source of all property data - the stats provided by HM Land Registry based on completed sales. Although newspapers will highlight the latest released figures, any estate agent will tell you that they are seldom an accurate reflection of current market sentiment. This can really only be measured by the activity levels reported by agents on an almost daily basis, and we can certainly testify that the current market in this area has been rosier than that reported by HM Land Registry. For example, the latest HMLR figures reflect completions which happened up to three months ago, which reflect exchanges that happened up to six months ago, that in turn reflect offers that were accepted up to nine months ago on properties that came to market possibly over a year ago! When we provide homeowners with our market opinion, we take the fullest account of current buyer activity in the context of available comparable stock across the market, and find this up-to-the-minute approach helps us to secure the very highest prices the market will pay - today!

Exciting new plans for Ashtead REC In an ideal world an exciting play park would exist within every community, funded by the local authority and paid for out of our taxes. The reality is far different. It appears in these days of budget cut backs play parks are a soft target. Yet, we know just how important quality play is to the well being of children (and their parents and carers!). Having an attractive play area within easy reach of the village is a wonderful attribute to any community – keeping children off the streets, safe and occupied. Any estate agent in Ashtead would tell you the same… We partnered with MVDC Parks department to understand what local children want to see in an expanded, larger play area. The plans are exciting, but they don’t come cheap. The initial cost for the new play park is £65,000. As the council are only able to fund up to £50,000 of this, it is ARC who is responsible for raising the rest. We have managed to raise £10,000 to date via a mixture of fundraising events, huge support from local businesses (Milners, Cairds) and local charities. We urgently need to raise a further £5k by December 2010 and we need the continued support of Ashtead to help us… which is why we are appealing for donations from within our community in a bid to raise the amount we can contribute to the play park development. We are now a registered charity and have no operational costs. Every pound you donate goes directly towards purchasing play equipment for the benefit of our children and our community. The Power Cut Ruth came home with Sarah after her Saturday morning swimming class and called out her usual 'hello' as she came through the door. There was no reply so she called again, "Hello! We're back!!" Still no response. It was a glorious autumnal day but Ruth had to search the house for signs of life. Sam was hunched over a laptop at the dining table, his neck cricked awkwardly to one side. He flicked his hand in her direction, as if shooing a fly, while talking into a mobile phone inserted under his chin. Daniel was on the Playstation, lost in his own animated world and Ben was on the computer, earphones inserted, flicking between his 'wall' on Facebook and bizarre clips of frantic police chases on Youtube. Ruth began to question her eldest son's sanity when he began randomly talking to himself, until she saw the 'in screen' picture of his friend Jack and realised that he was actually talking on Skype. Sarah disappeared to watch television and Ruth went to the kitchen to make coffee. When she put Sam's mug down beside him, she was greeted by a 'thumbs up' of appreciation followed by a patronising finger on the lips. She felt her temper rising but took her frustrations out on the breakfast things which were still strewn over the table. As Ruth wiped away puddles of milk, trails of sugar and stray Rice Krispies, a plan began to form in her mind. Ruth gave her family an hour. She read the paper, sorted the laundry and watered the plants but there was still no movement from any of them. She knew that Sam had an auto save function on his computer which would save any open work, so walked calmly to the fuse box under the stairs. Everything stopped. Ruth raced back to the kitchen and wiped the guilt from her face. Within three seconds, the children and Sam were groaning with dismay and disbelief. "I'll just go and check the fuse box" Ruth announced and raced back to the scene of the crime. "Everything seems fine here, it must be a power cut... What a nuisance!" Ben stormed down from his room. "What's going on? I've got important stuff to do... Mum can't you do something? He was joined by an equally distressed Daniel. "I was in the middle of a level! What's happened?" Sam was still on the phone but quickly ended the call and came to join in. "What the hell's going on? I've got so

much work to do. My computer battery won't last all day. Are you sure you've checked the fuses? Ruth reassured everyone that the fuses were fine and that it was probably just a temporary power cut. She was sure the power would come back later. After the initial withdrawal symptoms, Ben and Daniel decided to go into the garden and play football. Sam took Sarah out on her bicycle and Ruth washed the car. The power was still off at lunchtime and Ruth suggested that they walk into Leatherhead for lunch. They were due to go to the bonfire night fireworks that evening but Ben was suffering from severe Facebook 'withdrawal' and was not in a good mood. "I don't want to go and see stupid fireworks, they're the same every year anyway... What's the point! I'm not going. I'll stay at home and wait for the electricity to come back on!" Ruth wasn't sure what to do as she hadn't intended to keep the power off all day. She weighed up the value of the food in the freezer against the need to respond to this teenage tantrum. Sam made the choice for her. "Don't speak to us in that tone, Ben! If you want to stay at home, that's fine by me. I will leave you a torch and you can make yourself a sandwich. It's your choice..." Sam, Ruth, Daniel and Sarah left for the fireworks just as it was getting dark. Ben was beginning to regret his decision but adolescent pride prevented him from changing his mind. Ruth felt terribly guilty but the others all had a great time and the fireworks were magnificent. When they returned home they found Ben, sitting at the dining table with a single torch pointed at Sam's laptop screen. Sam was furious that Ben was using up the last of his battery but the expression of contrition on his son's face was sincere. He was watching a firework display on Youtube. While no one was looking, Ruth went to the fuse box and switched the power back on. She wondered if there were going to be many power cuts this winter. Busy times for Ashtead Rotary Club Since the handover of the presidency from Keith Allardyce to Maurice Pagella after Village Day in the Summer, life has been rather hectic for this Ashtead Club. Once the Village Day equipment is packed away and the Treasurer has produced his accounts, the pleasurable task of helping people in need – locally and internationally - can begin.

first priority being a water purification kit to protect against water-borne disease. The boxes also contain simple cooking equipment and utensils, tarpaulin, tools and household items. Another significant piece of charitable giving came in the form of a donation of £1000 to ‘The Guildford Rotary Eye Project’. Led by a Rotarian Dr Sam Das, a surgeon based in Guildford, this project saves the sight of a person in India at a cost of £15. However, every £5 donated here can be raised to £15 by Rotary internationally by use of matching funds so we believe we can save the sight of 200 people with this donation. A life-changing opportunity.

A very significant donation of £6000 will be made to the ‘Help for Heroes’ charity at a special dinner on 11th November. This is the largest single donation ever made by Ashtead Rotary Club and has only been made possible by the generous support of the people of Ashtead and surrounding areas - especially for Village Day. Appropriately taking place on Armistice Day, members and guests will be addressed by James Burn from ‘Help for Heroes‘ who will receive the cheque. The date also marks the 30th Anniversary of the inaugural meeting of Rotary Club of Ashtead back in 1980 and this will be celebrated by inviting founding members. On the International front, the Club dispatched a total of 12 Water Survival Boxes for the relief of those who have lost their homes and are still suffering from the flooding disaster in Pakistan. These boxes cost £150 each including airfreight and contain basic equipment for survival – the

Poet’s Corner Well it seems that Nurse Sheila Smith’s poem last month has brought out some rather good local poets, here’s a poem from John Griffin… John Griffin was born in Dunfermline, Scotland in 1957, lived in Ashtead until 2001 and now resides in Tolworth. He has been barking about, and reciting poetry since schooldays. A chauffeur by profession, John has made much use of the time spent waiting for clients by reading and writing verse. During some of the longer journeys, he entertains himself by reciting longer poems (Eliot's Four Quartets will occupy an hour on the motorway; Shakespeare’s Venus & Adonis an hour and a half). Before the advent of the hands-free carphone, this would elicit strange looks from other road users. These days, they just think he’s on the phone and have no suspicion of his pottiness. John says, "Many people have wondered why I have bothered memorising reams of verse, but the truth is, so far from being laboursome, I absolutely love poetry. Over the years, its forms, rhythms and music have fertilised my skull. Thus, when ideas pop into my head, they may couch in luxuriant nutrition, developing naturally into poems. Gosh! It sounds like I'm claiming all my poems to be beautiful blooms! Not at all. Unfortunately, I still have to use a lot of weed-killer..."

Here where Surrey’s fringes skirt at London’s bustle, hemmed with green, the motorway takes all its hurt away to places less serene. Here’s where cares and woes transform to quiet calm amid the storm. Marking the day that Shakespeare died who “set the teeth” that men have snarled, St. George’s flags are hoist worldwide and here, from Milners to The Marld. Yet every Ashtead dweller knows: here be no dragons. Here’s the rose. And Ashtead’s Hall remembers Peace, though memories of war remain. I fear man’s fighting may not cease till there are no fields left to gain. O, that ‘Peace’ graced every spar on all the village halls there are! Beneath our feet, long worlds ago, the Roman, off the beaten track, trod the very clay we know, found Ashtead Woods and looked not back. That Roman tileman’s chiseled skill echoes in the mind’s ear still. Even now, nice people come to Ashtead and decide to stay; people like my dad and mum, and gentle clouds at close of day red carpeting the damson sky. Again, I ask the question, why? “Howzat?!” the leaping fielders cry my daydream snaps at this ado. The umpire points in swift reply, which satisfies my question too, to heaven’s realms that overglide where Ashtead, love and peace reside. John Griffin February 2010

Leatherhead & District Local History Society Potted Histories No: 22

Sweech House & Gravel Hill - Leatherhead Sweech House (Nos. 2-6 Gravel Hill) was probably named from the ‘switch’ or fork in the road and is one of the oldest and most attractive buildings in Leatherhead. It is an amalgam of three 16th century buildings (though part of No 2 may be 15th century) and all are timber framed. No 2 seems to represent a complete small house with smoke blackening in the roof suggesting that it was originally an open hall structure. It was once a farm house and was occupied for more than thirty years in the mid 19th century by the widow Mary Brumwell, a cowkeeper, who sold milk at the door. Her daughter continued in the same house as a laundress and ‘mangler’. Nos. 8 and 10, now called Jubilee Cottages, were built within the Sweech House curtilage by local builder Charles Roberts in 1840 and originally called Jessamine Cottages. They were improved and renamed in honour of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee when they changed hands in 1897. Nos. 12-14 were built around 1875, obscuring the side elevation of Flint House, Nos. 16-18, which bears the date 1799. A timber framed building, it was renovated in that year and faced with knapped flint by Benjamin Simmons (1751-1832), who shortly afterwards also built the side terrace of six cottages then known as Flint Row (and the almost identical Chitty’s Row which used to stand in Bridge Street). The fine red brick house No 20, also by Simmons, has the date 1810 scratched on the brickwork near the front door. It was originally one of a pair, Vine Cottages, No 22 having sadly been demolished when Leret Way was built. Simmons built many of Leatherhead’s finest Georgian buildings; his works opposite the Parish Church are known to have been visited by Nelson in 1802. It was due to the benefactor Herbert Reeves and the Countryside Protection Society that Sweech House has survived. It is set off by the striking Catalpa or Indian Bean Tree in the War Memorial Gardens, the site of a smithy in the 19th century. Alun Roberts

Recipe of the month Meatball Pasta

These delicious homemade meatballs are flavoured with olives and basil then cooked in a rich and lightly spiced tomato sauce. Serve with spaghetti for a classic Italian supper Serves 4 Ready in 50 mins 400g (14oz) minced beef or lamb 1 tbsp pitted black olives, chopped 2 tbsp fresh chopped basil 1 red onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 1 tbsp olive oil 500g carton passatta (sieved tomatoes) 1-2 tsp harissa paste (see tip)

1. Place half the chopped onion and crushed garlic in the food processer and process until smooth, then place in a bowl with he minced beef or lamb, olives and basil. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Shape into about 28 small meatballs and chill for 30 minutes. 2. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and fry the meatballs for 3-4 mins until browned all over, stirring frequently. Remove the meatballs with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. 3. Add the rest of the onion and garlic to the pan and fry for 5 mins. Pour in the passatta and add the harissa paste and sugar. Bring to the boil. Add the meatballs and 150ml (1/4pt) water and simmer for 30 mins. 4. Cook the spaghetti in a large pan of salted water for 12-14 mins or according to the packet instructions. Drain well and divide between four serving plates. Season the meatball sauce to taste then spoon over the spaghetti. Serve garnished with basil leaves.

Harissa paste is a fiery blend of chillies and spices often used in North African cookery. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find it near the herbs and spices section in most supermarkets but if unavailable add a pinch of crushed dried chillies instead. 64

Thai Pinto Restaurant, Leatherhead decided to present us with a leg of aromatic crispy duck to try. It was all fantastic, Matthew’s lamb dish was fragrant with a background of slight spice to give it warmth, the lamb was so tender it gave way under the slightest pressure of the spoon. My stir fried beef was delicious and very tender, again beautifully fragrant with a slight chilli hit but not enough to deter from the lightness of touch from the other spices. In fact Au said that they were very happy to increase the ‘heat’ of each dish, depending on what the customer wanted.

Paul Thaweesin, and his lovely wife Au, very kindly invited me and my partner Matthew, to review their restaurant, which opened in March 2010. Matthew and I were very warmly welcomed on a cold and miserable night in October.

The duck was sensational, I am a great lover of dark meat and thought that it lent itself very well to the way in which it was cooked.

Thai Pinto is a genuinely relaxed and informal Thai dining experience, serving freshly prepared, authentic Thai cuisine using only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients; the spices and herbs essential to the unique flavour of Thai cuisine are sourced from a specialist importer.

We decided to drink Singha Thai beer with our meal, which complimented our meal, although I did have a look at Paul’s wine list and it was fairly extensive, there was a wine to suit all pockets and tastes.

The Thai Pinto is very much a family affair, with Paul and Au running the restaurant with Paul explained to us that a Thai ‘Pinto’ is a help from his two cousins (one is a chef). For our main courses Matthew chose ‘Massamun Kaa’ lam slowly cooked with onion, potatoes, coconut milk and lime leaves. I chose ‘Neua Krapraw’ stir fried beef with chilli, garlic, long beans and holy basil leaves. We also chose to go with our mains, a ‘Phad Phak Nam Man Hoi’ which were stir fried vegetables served with either oyster or black bean sauce.

I do wish them great success in Leatherhead, they are such lovely people and an absolute delight to meet. From 1st - 30th November Paul is giving all diners a 15% discount (except from the set lunch and take away menus). I would urge you to try Thai Pinto, you’ll be hooked!

This was all served with some sticky Thai Jasmine rice, which was a good foil for all those wonderful flavours.

World Première of new cantata - “The Song of Songs” “The Song of Songs” is a new setting of one of the Old Testament’s glittering treasures and the world’s most beautiful and mysterious love poems. It has been set to music by Leatherhead Choral Society’s Musical Director Ian Assersohn, and will receive its world première at the society’s concert “Love Sacred and Profane” at the Menuhin Hall in Stoke D’Abernon on Saturday 27th November 2010 at 7.30 p.m. Ian Assersohn trained at the Royal College of Music where he developed an interest in vocal music and music theatre. The style of The Song of Songs is influenced by the western choral tradition as well as Jewish liturgical music, klezmer and contemporary middle-eastern belly-dance. The choir will also perform Carl Orff’s iconic work, “Carmina Burana” (parts one and two). Its lusty lyrics, drinking songs, sinners’ confessions and hymns in praise of gambling and gluttony excite singers and audience alike. The choir will be joined by Barisons Chamber Choir, Surrey County Percussion Ensemble, pianists Jan Assersohn and Gina Eason and two talented young soloists, soprano Heather Caddick and tenor Rhys Bowden.

A Sparkling Baroque Evening Comes to Dorking St Martin’s Church, Dorking 7.30pm Saturday 13th November

Ashtead Choral Society will open their 2010/2011 season with a concert entitled Brilliant Baroque, is a celebration of music from the Baroque era with its grandiose style of music first introduced in Italy in the early 17th Century and popularized by composers such as George Frideric Handel, Johann Sebastian Bach and Antonio Vivaldi. The concert will include the first movement of Handel’s moving Dixit Dominus, completed in April 1707 and Handel’s earliest surviving autograph. One of Johann Sebastian Bach’s most enduring and best-loved works, Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring, together with his motet, Jesu Meine Freude, will also be performed. The concert will include the anthem based on Psalm 102:1, Hear my Prayer composed by Henry Purcell in 1682 and Antonio Vivaldi’s outstandingly popular Gloria written in the early 1700s. The choir will be conducted by Paul Dodds, accompanied by organist Andrew Storey and joined by soloists, Ellen Timothy and Kate Aitchison from the National Youth Choir of Great Britain.

Tickets for this wonderful concert, which include refreshments during the interval, are priced at £12.00. They can be obtained from the ACS Box Office Manager on 01372 275369 or at the door on the evening of the concert. Seats are unreserved so please arrive in good time.

The Inner Wheel Club of Ashtead Most people have not heard of the organisation “Inner Wheel”. However, many have heard of Rotary and all Inner Wheel members have some connection with a Rotarian; most are wives or partners of Rotarians but it also includes any female relative of a Rotarian. Inner Wheel, in its own right, was founded in Manchester in 1923 and now has clubs all over the world. The Inner Wheel Club of Ashtead was founded in 1982 by twelve ladies. The founder President was Mrs Jean Haynes who has, this year, become President again for the third time. The club now has twenty five members. We actively support the local community with many of us helping Ashtead Good Neighbours, Surrey Young Carers and other organisations. Although, strictly, Inner Wheel is not a fund raising organisation we do raise money for various local and overseas charities. This year the President has chosen to support the Leatherhead Night Hostel and we are also raising money to buy an ’Shelter Box’ which is full of items needed for survival by a family caught in a natural disaster or conflict.

Apple Pressing At The Grange Our clients and staff spent an afternoon pressing apples picked here in the gardens at The Grange this week. First the apples were peeled on an automatic peeler then pressed through a traditional apple press to make juice. Cups were sold for 20 pence to staff. Spokesperson Anna Giokas said: ‘Our apple crop at The Grange has been really good this year, this is a fun way to use some of them up – and the juice was delicious.’ The apple press was lent to us by Epsom Apples, a project which encourages people to make the most of locally grown fruit. Epsom Apples estimates that a million apples go to waste every year in the borough. Transition Ashtead The Start Garden Party In September four of us from Transition Ashtead visited Clarence House for Prince Charles’s ‘Start Garden Party to Make a Difference’. http:// www.startgardenparty.co.uk/ He had the idea for a public event four years ago because he felt that, for far too long, the prospect of living sustainably was only ever portrayed as dull and boring. No one, he said, explained that a sustainable future could actually provide even more satisfaction that the world we live in now. The show was held in front of Lancaster, Clarence and Marlborough Houses from 8th -19th September. There were over sixty stands including major companies, B & Q, M & S, BT, Addison Lee; plus many smaller companies, charities and organizations, including Slow Food, Poly Solar, Global Action Plan, Wildlife trusts as well as first class entertainment from Jools Holland and many others. There was a beautiful drought garden designed by the expert in this field, Beth Chatto. A sustainable vegetable garden had been built along the whole of the front of Clarence House. Raised beds were made from wide wooden planks with a huge variety of plant stands and containers - sinks, baths, olive oil cans, tin cans, step ladders, an old door with holes cut out for herb planters, and the re-cycled water-grown veg. Prince Charles is keeping this garden exhibit - he loved it!

‘The Great Debate’, hosted by Marcus Brigstock, discussed environmental issues with actor Roger Lloyd Pack, Ken Livingstone, Sustainable Development Commissioner Will Hay, and BBC head of comedy Jon Plowman. You can imagine our delight (and loud cheer from the Ashtead contingent!) when they highlighted the Transition network - they said that it is a vital ‘grass roots’ movement to help us change to a low carbon, sustainable way of life and were pleased to see Transition Ashtead at the Garden party. It was truly inspiring to have such an enjoyable event solely dedicated to sustainability and the environment. I was very recycled water-grown veg heartened to feel that at last we have moved from arguing about the issues to accepting that we have to take urgent action to live ‘within our means’. We came back with lots of fresh ideas and information to inspire us all to make Ashtead more sustainable. Maybe Prince Charles would like to hear how we’re getting on… Caroline Cardew-Smith

After the flowers go over towards the end of November, the stems should be cut down almost to ground level and, in really cold regions, the crowns should be mulched heavily with leaf mould or home-made compost, held in place with pegged-down chicken wire. That said, I forgot to do this before the last, very harsh, winter and they still came through fine. They benefit from being divided when they become congested, about every three years, but do it in the early spring, just as the new growth is emerging.

By November, gardens are beginning to look shaggy and short of colour. So various lateflowering hardy chrysanthemums can be a boon to the gardener, especially in the dry, almost frost-free autumns that have recently become the norm. The types of chrysanthemum that are hardy and flower in the autumn are the Korean, the rubellum and the Japanese semi-pompoms. They come in a wide range of colours and mix well with Michaelmas daisies, rudbeckias, echinaceas and Verbena bonariensis, the other staples of autumn herbaceous plantings. Like all chrysanthemums, they are useful for arranging in vases, provided you don’t leave them too late. Hardy chrysanthemums make clumps, woody at the base, with stems 70-100 cm tall. They do best in well-drained, fertile, slightly alkaline soil, in full sun. But they are really not fussy. Though reasonably sturdy, they are best staked, as autumn gales can be fierce. To make compacter, sturdier plants, you should follow the advice of Michael Loftus of Woottens of Wenhaston, who cuts these plants back hard in early June and removes any spindly stems. This has become a popular technique with gardeners as a way of staggering the flowering of different types of hardy perennial. In the case of hardy chrysanthemums, however, the flowering happens at the same time, but you can get away without staking. In hot summers, it pays to water chrysanthemums in dry weather or the stems become stunted and straggly, and the flowering poor.

‘Cottage Apricot’ has single, bronzy-apricot flowers in October and November, on stems up to 80 cm tall. It flops easily, so should be staked. I think it’s one of the best varieties, which provides a zingy contrast to the pink, mauve and purple Michaelmas daisies. ‘Anastasia’ is a pompom with purplish-pink, double flowers with yellow centres, up to 4 cm across. The plant grows to 75 cm tall. ‘Mei-kyo’ is very similar but has slightly paler flowers and is shorter. ‘Nantyderry Sunshine’ is a Japanese semipompom with bright yellow double flowers, 3 cm across, in October and November. It is a sport from the equally garden-worthy ‘Bronze Elegance’. ‘Ruby Mound’ is a popular variety with a dense, short plant. The double 7cm flowers are deep red in colour. ‘Emperor of China’ flowers late, in November and December. It has a laxer, taller habit than most, and double, 6 cm flower heads in a very soft pink. The petals are slightly quilled, which is most attractive, and the leaves turn red in autumn. ‘Purleigh White’ grows to about 85 cm, and has white semi-pompom flowers with a hint of pink and prominent yellow central discs. MOLE VALLEY POLICE COLUMN Rogue Traders and Distraction Burglaries With winter approaching, opportunist “rogue traders” see a good opportunity to take advantage of people’s vulnerabilities and the desire to have their homes safe, secure and watertight for the coming colder months? Surrey Police continues to work alongside a number of partner agencies, developing initiatives to help all members of our communities be and feel safe in their own homes. As part of ongoing work we do already, your Neighbourhood Teams are focusing particular attention on providing guidance, support and awareness to members of the community on how to spot and deal with cold callers, rogue traders and distraction burglars. You should know, however, that you have a right to refuse to deal with anyone who comes to your door uninvited. You can always refuse to answer if you have any concerns about the caller. If you have a door chain and do intend to answer the door, then put the chain across before opening the door. We would not recommend that you agree for any work to be done without checking that the business offering this service is totally legitimate and reputable. Many areas have directories for businesses that have received positive customer feedback. Also, Trading Standards and Consumer Direct can offer advice on businesses and service providers who should be trustworthy, reliable and who will carry out work for a reasonable price. In many cases, nothing can beat personal recommendation. It is never a good idea to allow someone you don’t know to carry out work for you. They may not be qualified or competent to do the work and what may sound like a cheap price could turn out to be an expensive choice, particularly if you end up paying out again to have bad work put right!!

Please insist on seeing appropriate identification for anyone claiming to be from a utility company. You can also telephone the company to find out if they are operating in the area. In fact, even if a uniformed police officer calls at your door they will be perfectly happy for you to ask to see their warrant card to identify themselves, or you can even phone us on 0845 125 2222 to confirm an officer’s details to your satisfaction. Finally, if you are ever put in a position of feeling in any way vulnerable or frightened by unwanted callers, please call the police on 999.
