hat a wonderful day we had at Ashtead Village Day - and how lucky were the Rotary Club with the weather, a week later and everyone attending would have been cowering in the marquees! The atmosphere was, as ever, superb and everyone had a smile on their face. A report from the Rotary Club’s Len Wood can be found on page 12 and a selection of photos of the day taken by Andy Newbold can be found on page 36.

Unfortunately this year I didn’t have as much time as I would have liked to pop along and say hello to all the local organisations and charities that appear regularly in this magazine because I was in the Kitchen Tent with rather dashing local chef, David Gillott (cor!), judging the Great Ashtead Bake Off - someone had to do it I guess. There were lots of entries in the three categories: walnut & raisin bread; Victoria sponge and finally cup cakes by the under 13s. The winners were Lucy Shannon (cup cakes - Lucy is aged 7yrs 2mths); Caroline Munday (Victoria sponge) and Jane Bloore (walnut & raisin bread) who all followed David’s recipes which were posted up on his website. All the entries were fantastic and it was difficult to choose the winners. The under 13s especially made a fabulous effort. David asked one of the entrants of the cup cake competition what he thought of the recipe, to which the lad replied, “It was a bit wet”. He had us in stitches and poor David was mortified to think that his recipe didn’t work as well as he would have liked. I mentioned to David later that he probably used extra large eggs, which made David feel a bit better - what a hoot. David’s recipe for a classic Victoria sponge (as served in The Ritz for afternoon tea no less) can be found on page 40.

The Annual Leatherhead Duck race is once again upon us on Sunday 30th June (see page 20). Always great fun for adults and children alike and why not make a day of it and have lunch at one of Leatherhead’s many fine eateries? You may have heard that Surrey is once again going to feature in a closed road race starting from London, and coming into Surrey, finishing in London. This will take part on 4th August, and more info can be found on pages 18 and 22. There will also be another race in September, and I will give you more info on that in next month’s edition. Once again Ashtead Community Vision are urging Ashtead residents to get involved with the Ashtead Neighbourhood Plan - which will become part of Mole Valley’s Local Plan. If an NDP is not produced then MVDC could create its own meaning Ashtead will have little or no say in development of land. Caroline Cardew-Smith’s full report is on page 14. The Leatherhead Lions are launching their very successful shoebox appeal for 2013 and are once again asking for help on page 54. Perhaps your children at school and our local clubs can get together and provide a number of these items collectively? Two members of the team came to the APMH on May 14th to present the outcome of the review and answer questions raised by Ashtead residents. Attendees learned that the preferred option is to turn Epsom into a local hospital and an elective surgery centre. The hospital would lose its A&E and Maternity units but would continue to have an Urgent Care Centre, diagnostics facilities, outpatients and day surgery unit. Residents voiced strong feeling over the proposed loss of the A&E and Maternity services. The plans will eventually go to full public consultation although the date for that is not yet decided as the Commissioning Care Groups are currently commenting on the proposals and may seek amendments prior to the consultation.

Mayor of London's Prudential Ride London-Surrey Sunday 4th August Celebrating the legacy for cycling from the Olympics did you know that there is a closed road cycle race which takes place on Sunday 4th August and people can watch it going past.

In mid-May members of the ARA Standing Committee met with a Tesco’s representative and learned that the store planned for The Street is still going ahead, but a date has not yet been set for the work to start. The ARA asked that in the interim the site be cleared up and made to look presentable.

It is a 100 mile event from London's iconic landmarks to the rolling hills of Surrey. It will take in Chiswick, Kingston and Walton-on-Thames, then into Surrey through Ripley and West Horsley -Newlands Corner through to Abinger Hammer and Holmbury St Mary then on to Forest Green, Leith Hill, Westcott, Dorking, Boxhill, Headley Heath, Leatherhead, Cobham and Esher before returning to London. Ashtead Station Revamp The £2 million revamp of Ashtead Station got its first use of opening its doors in June, although the work is still in progress it is close to being completed and will officially be opened within two months.

THE LEATHERHEAD RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION The assault on the Green Belt around Leatherhead The Core Strategy, containing some elements of the now abandoned South East plan, seeks to provide 1700 homes throughout Mole Valley by 2026. To find sites for these, a study called the Green Belt Boundary Review was undertaken of all the areas around Leatherhead and other towns and villages in Mole Valley which could possibly be developed for housing or for commercial use. Naturally, the study has been seized upon by developers who are always keen on finding fresh green field sites. Around Leatherhead itself, a number of places caught their eye: to the south, both sides of the A24 seemed ideal to around three developers, to the east, Sutton and East Surrey Water feel part of their site would be suitable, along Randalls Road a long narrow stretch to the north of the cemetery is already on the MV Reserve Housing list, Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation would like to form a housing estate next to their current buildings, yet another developer feels that there is good potential on the ground to the east of Teazle Wood to the north of Tesco and finally, the one that has already hit the headlines, the fields on the southern side of the M25 along

Barnett Wood Lane involving the displacement of the current allotments. One set of local builders maintain that it is the villages which need the extra population (and houses) so as to keep them and their services sustainable. What is holding all these developments back is the fact that they are all (except the current allotments) in our Green Belt. The Planning Department at Pippbrook is trying to decide which areas really fulfil the original aims of being Green Belt and which do not. This is an unenviable task. The LRA is maintaining that except, perhaps, for a single house or two, our Green Belt should remain intact. Opposition to large swathes of the countryside disappearing will continue. We wish our town to remain substantially the same and are confident that windfall and brown field sites within the town’s boundaries will fulfil our obligations to MV’s targets for this area. Rotary never sleeps Well what a day ! Upwards of 10,000 people and beautiful weather. The 30th Ashtead Village Day was really swinging. If you didn't go you were one of the very few. The atmosphere was amazing and happily dozens, nay hundreds, have taken time to congratulate and thank the Rotary Club of Ashtead for such a magnificent event. Natalie Coyle, a truly elegant and charming person, opened the day and sang “Happy 30th Birthday” with members of the vast crowd. She spent much time circulating and talking to visitors and stall holders alike. Meat Diva, put on a show of several of their impressions of the stars and Poptastic, Atlantis, Barnett Wood Infants Dandelion Theatre Arts, Stannage Stunt Team and 3rd Ashtead Brownies kept the excitement and entertainment at full force for the whole afternoon. All kept in good order by our splendidly attired ringmaster Noel Thompson (pictured left). All the side stalls were kept extremely busy and the Great Ashtead Bake-Off and the cooking tutorials by Ashtead Chef David Gillott were both a sell-out. Come five o'clock the field was still thronged and the happy but exhausted Rotarians were looking forward the conclusion of an exhilarating and wonderful day. More photographs of the day can be found on page 36. We do not have the financial results yet but it will fund much of the charitable activity of the Rotary Club of Ashtead for the coming year. That starts on Wednesday 12th June when we take a group of 75 children with a disadvantage from five Ashtead schools on our Kids Out Day. That's with many other Rotary Clubs from SE England when we descend on Chessington World of Adventure for a day of fun and thrills and a picnic lunch.

Ashtead Community Vision Will having a Neighbourhood Development Plan limit building on the Green Belt? The simple answer is yes. The Localism Act 2011 gives communities the chance to have some influence on development in their area. However, the National Planning Policy Framework 2012 (NPPF) has a presumption in favour of development because a) to stimulate the economy via building and b) to provide more housing. We may not agree with this policy but this is the reality that we are constrained by.

We are using the 2011 census, reports & statistics at government, county and district level, and importantly the opinions of Ashtead residents. ‘Can’t we just say that Ashtead is full?’ Well no; there is a national need for housing and government have required MVDC to provide 1400 new homes across the district , so it is only fair and right that Ashtead is asked to provide some proportion of this. We cannot just be NIMBYs – every area is grappling with the same difficult issue.

Leatherhead's Annual Duck Race Sunday 30th June - Bridge Street The Ducks will be taking to the water from 2pm down by the town bridge (bottom of Bridge Street) for 6 tote races followed by the grand final. These e will be followed by the mass duck race at approximately 3:30pm. Ducks for the mass duck race can be purchased for just ÂŁ1 on the day or in advance from Barton's Bookshop. Prudential RideLondon - Surrey 100 & Surrey Classic Races Sunday 4th August

Prudential RideLondon is a new world-class annual two-day cycling festival developed by the Mayor of London in partnership with Surrey County Council. Amateur cyclists will also participate by riding a 100-mile challenge on the same closed roads as the professionals, with the added incentive of raising money for good causes. The Prudential RideLondon events that come into Surrey on 4th August are: Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 This will see 20,000 amateur cyclists through London and Surrey on a similar route to that of the London 2012 Olympic Road Cycling Races. RideLondon-Surrey 100 will start in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, then travel through the capital and into Surreyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s before finishing in London. Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic This will see 150 of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top cyclists follow the same route as the RideLondon-Surrey 100, with an extended route to meet international race requirements.

Mole Valley Police Column Stopping the Rogue Traders

With the nicer weather finally with us (perhaps for a while?) and the lighter evenings, more of us have been out and about using our pedal cycles. Sadly, this has, in turn, seen an increase of thefts of unattended cycles.

( A message from trading standards) We have stopped rogue traders ripping off unsuspecting victims to the tune of almost £40,000 in a year. Our rapid action team prevented victims – many of them vulnerable – being conned out of £38,000 in the last financial year alone.

Here is some advice to help keep your pedal cycle more secure while at home. •

The news came as a trading standards survey revealed that a drive to deter dodgy sellers from approaching front doors in the first place is working.

Fit a good quality padlock, which has a hardened steel shackle (the part which opens and passes through the hasp) to all shed and garage doors. Bolts through both wings of hinges, hasps and staples are essential, as screws can be pulled out;

•

If possible, install a simple CCTV system but display signs warning CCTV is in operation and to only cover areas within your own property boundaries;

•

Register bicycles on Immobilise.com, along with the unique serial number and bicycle description. Photograph your bicycles including the serial number and any other unique marks;

•

Chains and ground anchors are essential to secure bicycles to structural elements such as a concrete floor or timber beams;

•

Check household insurance policies to make sure theft of bicycles is included and any special conditions regarding cycle security required by the insurers are met. If within an active Neighbourhood Watch some insurance companies will offer a discount on premiums.

It showed that 90% of households displaying a ‘No Cold Calling’ sticker carrying a warning saw a drop in the number of doorstep sellers. Around 100,000 of the stickers have been distributed and more than half of people displaying the notice were aged over 60. The campaign’s success also means that large sums of money potentially earmarked to pay for shoddy work has been saved.

The Barbeque There was nothing better than a sunny afternoon with friends, cold beer and barbequed meat. That was Sam’s philosophy and in this area of haute cuisine, he considered himself a master. He didn’t have time for gas barbeques. Barbequed meat only tasted like barbequed meat if it was cooked over charcoal, not ‘briquettes’ but proper black, dirty charcoal that took forever to light and needed tender loving supervision. Ruth wasn’t so keen. Any barbeque event had to be followed with an enthusiastic stream of praise and gratitude, which was quite exhausting. She cooked a meal almost every night but when in charge of a barbeque, Sam behaved as though he’d invented the art of cooking single handedly. The weather forecast was good and it was Ruth’s birthday weekend. As far as Sam was concerned, this presented him with the perfect opportunity to kill three birds with one stone. He could treat his lovely wife, entertain the family and use the barbeque – all on the same afternoon. Phone calls were made, shopping lists were written and charcoal was bought. Sam was ready. Ruth had been treated to a birthday barbeque before and knew what it entailed. A few days before, Sam asked if she could ‘pop to the butchers’ to pick up some meat and perhaps ‘make some salads and stuff’. She accepted the kind offers to make puddings from the more thoughtful members of her family but was surprised to get a phone call from Julie, Sam’s sister, the day before the party.

the children gave Ruth her presents and then Sam raced off to buy the beer and wine. Ruth tidied and vacuumed the kitchen and living room, cleaned the downstairs loo and started on the salads. Daniel and Ben valiantly tried to put up their gazebo, which seemed to be missing a couple of poles while Sarah folded and counted out napkins. The guests were due at midday. Sam came home at about ten thirty and put the beer and wine in the fridge. He gave Ruth a kiss and headed out into the garden to help the boys and set up the barbeque. Just before the guests arrived, he put on his special barbeque apron, which proudly read ‘James Bond, licensed to grill…’ The arrival of Samson caused enormous excitement. Julie was right - he was a gorgeous bundle of velvet brown, twinkle-eyed energy and the children were soon bouncing around as much as he was. At about a quarter to one, the first drops of rain began to fall. Everyone trailed inside, reassuring each other that it would soon blow over. Sam stayed stoically at his post under a large golfing umbrella. Sure enough, a few minutes later, the sun started to shine and Sam could be seen through the window carefully laying out the lamb kebabs in neat rows in trays on the garden bench.

There was a sudden panic. Samson had gone missing and Julie was becoming hysterical. He’d come in when it started to rain, as was evident by the muddy footprints on the living room Julie had recently bought a new puppy. He was a carpet, but the doors had been left open. This is the one and only opportunity for members of the public to go ‘behind-the-scenes’ at WAF’s centre for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals, and at the same time donate to this very worthwhile local charity by shopping at the numerous food & drinks, gifts and 'arts & crafts' stalls, or taking part in the many and varied fun-packed activities for all the family! The Common Column It has been just over a year since we started working with the Surrey Amphibian and Reptile Group to survey Ashtead Common for reptiles. We got off to a slow start last summer with very few sightings but in May we split the survey route into two to make it easier to cover. So far we have recorded quite a few grass snakes and a couple of common lizards but it seems that population densities are fairly low. We’re still hoping for sightings of slow worm and adder. If you would like to find out a bit more about the wildlife on Ashtead Common, you may be interested in joining our ecologist, Andrew Scott, on an evening walk to hunt for glow worms and learn all about these strange creatures. The walk will be held on Wednesday 10 July from 8pm – 10pm and booking is essential on 01372 279083 or email city.commons@cityoflondon.gov.uk On your walks around the Common you may have noticed fencing up around the Rye Brook and lorries parked in Broadhurst pumping water. These measures have been taken in response to a serious pollution incident that has poisoned fish and other wildlife in the brook. A surface water drain that discharges directly into the Rye has been contaminated with an unpleasant oily substance. The Environment Agency has installed a bund and is pumping out the polluted water to prevent further environmental damage. Surface water is not treated as sewerage and is often discharged directly into rivers and other watercourses. Polluting watercourses is a criminal offence. Seven new calves have recently joined the four cattle already out on the Common. They can be found off to the east of Bridleway 33 as they work to manage the grassland and help maintain the ‘mosaic’ of grassland and scrub found in this area of the site.

The Ashtead Common Volunteers have recently managed the road-side vegetation opposite our office in Woodfield Road. This project produces a lot of willow cuttings, but rather than throw them away, the volunteers have a novel solution – they take them to Chessington Zoo where they provide a very welcome treat for the gorillas, giraffes and rhinos! The gorillas love to eat willow, starting with the nutritious leaves and finishing by stripping the bark and chewing on young stems… and our waste product goes to good use. Wildlife Aid urges caution with young deer The Wildlife Aid Foundation has issued an urgent appeal to members of the public not to disturb or attempt to move or handle young deer if you find them whilst out in the countryside. The Wildlife Aid Foundation (WAF), which has a fullyequipped wildlife hospital in Randalls Road, Leatherhead, is urging people not to jump to conclusions when they see what appears to be an injured or orphaned fawn. WAF founder Simon Cowell MBE explains: "We have had six incidents in the past two weeks of people bringing in what they think are injured or orphaned fawns. Our advice is: please don't over-react if you see a young deer sitting or lying in the undergrowth with no sign of an adult deer nearby. If the fawn appears to be alone that is no reason to be alarmed but do please ring us for advice. In fact for any orphaned wild animal please call us first." He adds: "If the fawn is lying down but with its head up and eyes bright and alert, then it has almost certainly just been left by its mother while she moves away to feed. In this case it should not be disturbed or picked up unless it is in imminent danger, for example from dogs or machinery or vehicles. "Please do not stroke the fawn or touch it in any way, as putting human scent on it will almost certainly cause its mother to abandon it. If you are concerned, just watch the fawn from a distance, to see if the fawn's mother returns. Young deer are often left alone for several hours at a time, so you can check it again later. If the mother does not return by dusk, then please call the Wildlife Aid Foundation for advice. We have a 24-hour helpline, 09061 800132, so expert advice is just a phone call away. "If the mother does not return to the fawn before nightfall, then it is possible that she may have been killed in a road accident or attacked and injured by dogs, or been wounded in some other way, but even in these circumstances it really is vital that you call WAF first before attempting to move the fawn. We can then advise you on what to do to ensure the fawn's best interests and safety." www.wildlifeaid.org.uk. 52

15-18 year olds will get their cinema kicks cheaper with FLIX

Dorking Halls launches FLIX, a new cinema card for 15-18 year olds 15-18 year olds will pay a lower price to enjoy the big screen thanks to a new cinema card being launched by Dorking Halls. The initiative, called the FLIX Youth Cinema Card, will allow young people to obtain the same discount as those enjoyed by full time students with an NUS card. The discount means that those with a FLIX card will pay only £8.30 for 3D films, or £6.80 for 2D screenings. In addition, showing a FLIX card at a confectionary stall or the cafe will entitle the cardholder to ‘ultimate upgrades’ from medium to large size on popcorn and drinks. Dorking Halls’ General Manager, Keith Garrow, explains: “Until now, young people have had to pay full adult prices once they reach the age of 15, despite the fact that they are still in full time education. We hope this new free card will encourage them to come and visit us more, as well as saving them the expense of having to travel further afield.”

Ashtead Townswomen’s Guild At our June meeting our speaker was Colin Jones On Island Hopping. Since retirement, Colin has worked on cruise ships travelling the world. He showed us some beautiful photographs of the many islands that he has visited, especially their flora. His talk certainly gave us itchy feet! We are looking forward to a cream tea and summer lunch in July. Mid Surrey federation are organising Croquet and Bowls days over the summer and a scrabble afternoon on September 2nd. At the National AGM of Townswomens’ Guilds to be held in Harrogate the two Mandates to be discussed are on giving terminally ill, mentally able people, a right to an assisted death and the concern felt by TG that the current reliance on modern technology leaves those who are unable to access and/or afford said technology at a disadvantage. At our next meeting on July 2nd Siobhan Clarke is coming to speak about dressing for the Tudor Court and I understand she will be coming in costume. We wait & see! Leatherhead Morning Women’s Institute The recent trip to the Cutty Sark was an interesting one and we look forward to our visit to Worthing in June. A suggestion was made that we have a trip to Chichester in early December to visit their Christmas market. The proposed WI resolution on how our local high streets can be brought back to life was discussed a vote taken on whether this campaign would be a worthwhile step. Our President, Hazel Richmond-Coggan showed as an attractive craft bag, which she had made, and was awarded first prize in a competition. Everyone was intrigued to see how it was done, and inspired to have a go. The meeting concluded with a quiz which involved identifying famous people in their younger days, quite a few surprises there! Our meetings are held on the fourth Thursday in the month at Leatherhead Parish Church Hall at 10.15am and visitors are always welcome. For more information ring Betty on 01372 374570.

Ashtead Women’s Institute - June meeting Our speaker at the June meeting was Mr Rupert Matthews, speaking on Ghosts of Surrey, who most entertainingly told us of the surprisingly many different types of ghosts. Apparently, if the phenomenon stays in the same pattern it can be researched, and it seems that ghosts don’t float about in mid-air, surprise people or walk through walls. There are the Classic Ghosts, Presence Ghosts, Apparitions, Crisis Apparitions, and Poltergeists, who all have their own distinctive ways of making themselves seen or felt. Mr Matthews did say, though, that 70% of cases investigated by the Society of Psychical Research were not confirmed - but what about the other 30% ! Back to reality, our members enjoyed a visit to Arundel Cathedral to see the wonderful Carpet of Flowers for Corpus Christi work undertaken by parishioners, (pictured right) along with many other very beautiful floral displays around the Cathedral. This follows the ancient custom to strew flowers in the path of people, showing respect and reverence. After some spare time to see the town itself we were treated to a delicious afternoon tea by Cowfold W.I. on the way home. At our July 3rd evening our speaker will be Edward Bellingham, with Tales of an African School, and there will be a competition, encouraging entrants with their Victoria Sponges. Will there be cake for our evening refreshments?

Eilean Mòr, Outer Hebrides - All three of the lighthouse-keepers on Eilean Mòr in the Hebrides disappeared on 15 December 1900, leaving behind their oilskins, a table full of food, and the light prepared to be lit. Why or how the men vanished will never be known. 2. Newhaven, East Sussex - Lord Lucan’s car was found at Newhaven three days after he disappeared from his London home, where the family’s nanny had earlier been found murdered. Despite several unconfirmed sightings across the globe, Lord Lucan was never seen again. 3. Seaton Carew, Cleveland - John Darwin infamously ‘disappeared’ while canoeing off Seaton Carew in 2002. Having been declared dead, in 2007 he walked into a London police station claiming no memory of the last five years – but when a photograph surfaced of him and his wife shopping for properties in Panama in 2006 their hoax was discovered. 4. Sunningdale, Berkshire - Agatha Christie disappeared from her home in Sunningdale in December 1926. She eventually reappeared at a hotel in Harrogate eleven days later, unable to give any explanation for her disappearance. She was later diagnosed with amnesia. 5. The Tower of London - The fate of the ‘Princes in the Tower’ remains one of the most alluring mysteries in English history. Highlands Farm, Headley Road, Leatherhead

Highlands Farm on the western side of Headley Road is set in what used to be open fields of the parish. It was once the property of Lord Roger Cunliffe of Tyrells Wood, which he let out on short renewable leases. The house was built in the late 1800s although the tarred weather-boarded barns are 17th century and there is an 18th century well house. The farmhouse is a neat three bay brick box with two weather-boarded bay windows on the ground floor. There is also a granary on saddle-stones and a fine wrought-iron weathervane. In 1873 the farm is said to be growing wheat, barley, oats, clover and turnips. Sheep were driven along the road from the farm to graze in rotation in the field (now Windmill Estate) and then moved on to grazing land behind Fetcham Church on what was then a polo field, returning to Highlands Farm the same way. Ploughing matches were also held there. Another activity was shooting; a common enough sport among farmers and sportsmen, many landowners employed their own gamekeepers. Volunteers needed to support people facing life-threatening illness Life threatening conditions are not something we plan for. News that a loved one has cancer or other life threatening condition comes as a great shock. From that moment their life expectancy is changed, their lives have changed and the impact on the lives of those closest to them has changed as all struggle to cope in coming to terms of what lies ahead. When a family member is diagnosed with cancer or another life-threatening illness it can be a lonely and frightening time. Surrey charity The Brigitte Trust offers a free volunteer service of emotional support and practical help at home. The service may also provide the family carer with a break, driving to medical or other appointments, shopping or just sitting quietly and listening. In partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support the service offered by the Trust is expanding into Woking, Spelthorne and West Elmbridge in the coming months and more volunteers are needed. We are now recruiting in these areas for our free training course starting in September 2013 in Weybridge. Through the programme, comprising 12 weekly sessions and a weekend workshop, volunteers will be equipped with the skills to provide emotional support to people and their families facing the huge challenges of life threatening illness.

Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall

2014 sees the 90th anniversary of the building of Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall. The first stones were laid early in 1924 to commemorate the Peace following WW1 and to help to rebuild the local community. The building was completed the same year and opened for use as a village hall for all residents of the local area. The present Trustees of the hall are inviting everyone to join in the celebrations. We want to hear from you or to meet you at an event. Today the building is a hive of activity with groups of people of all ages and many interests hiring rooms for their club events. In addition the building is open to the public for parties, dances and plays, beetle drives and dinners and many more opportunities to socialise and learn or simply relax.

The day the BBC Antiques Roadshow came to town A staggering 4,500 people visited Polesden Lacey on a glorious sunny day to experience the Antiques Roadshow. Many waited in line for several hours, in order to see the experts and have their items valued, or just to catch a glimpse of Fiona Bruce who signed autographs and chatted to many delighted fans as well as helping out at the reception desk. As always some real treasures emerged, including a giant leather rhino from a Liberty's window display!

Some highlights included: Box Hill School’s Armoury Collection

The school has a number of different weapons picked up by Geoffrey Winthrop-Young whilst he was travelling in Asia Minor, Macedonia and the Aegean between 1900 and 1903 and now loaned to them by his family. A group of staff and pupils brought items to show the experts including a steel shield with spike dug out of a ditch below the ramparts at Rhodes in 1902, thought to be a relic of the siege by the Turks in 1521 but identified by the Antiques Roadshow as 19th Century; as well as a naval cutlass which belonged to Admiral Sir George Young 1732-1810.

Polesden Lacey staff were particularly excited by the contents of Sue Lovett’s cloth bag. Sue had come all the way from Norfolk to bring her mother’s photograph album back to the place where she used to work. Sue’s mother, Gertie Hulton, was maid to Mrs Greville, the former owner of Polesden Lacey, during the 1930s. Her employer took her on many exciting adventures including trips to South America and Tahiti. Fiona Bruce took particular interest in this album and spent a long time with Sue.

Erica Emery queued for five and a quarter hours to show the experts her beautiful silver bowl with its enamelled flowers, fish and birds that had been in the family for over 40 years. You’ll have to watch the show to find out how much this one is worth as Erica was one of the lucky ones chosen to be filmed! 80

Cats Protection Epsom, Ewell & District: Celebrating 25 years of caring for local cats

In May 1988 George Michael was famous for topping the charts with “Faith”, (not falling out of cars...) the GCSE was first introduced, Jackson Pollock's "Search" sold for $4,800,000, Graeme Hick made English cricket history by scoring 405 runs in a county championship match and the Cats Protection Epsom, Ewell & District Branch was established! Since then CP Epsom Ewell & District Branch have gone on to help save and care for over 7,000 local cats & kittens.

Transition Ashtead Working towards a sustainable Ashtead

Sustainable Chemistry – modern “green” alchemy The chemical industry is often blamed for causing environmental pollution by its manufacturing processes and products. Memorable examples are CFCs causing the Antarctic Ozone Hole, synthetic detergents causing rivers to foam and leaded petrol causing damage to children’s brains. These particular environmental issues have now been tackled by legislation and better products, but there are still major concerns about the profligate use of resources in making some of the products we want. So what do we have to do to make the things that we need without - in a well coined phrase - “costing the earth”? The answer is Sustainable (or Green) Chemistry. Sustainable chemistry aims to improve the efficiency with which resources are used to meet our need for chemical products. It includes the design, manufacture and use of efficient, and more environmentally benign chemical products and processes. For example, we need disinfectants in hospitals, but how do we reduce their impact on the wider environment? Improving application methods and developing disinfectants that are far more biodegradable will help. And we need to find ways of preventing the problems some pharmaceuticals cause when they get into the water supply system through the sewage works discharges, for example synthetic sex hormones (from birth control pills) largely pass through untouched. Another example is in the area of plastics – plastics are almost essential to our current way of life – packaging, food hygiene, phones and cars. Can we make substitutes that have all the properties of the materials that we want without the drawbacks we have in making them (i.e. the use of oil, water and energy in manufacture and their disposal at the end of their useful life)? Can we make different types of plastics from alternate renewable resources that are easier to recycle and are biodegradable when we want them to be? Can we make plastics from plants? Are there innovative ways to make and use such products with new processes and what are the risks with processes and products once they are in wide usage? Certainly there are new ways of doing things – biomedical sensing and diagnostics are a rapidly growing area which is improving the way that we get quick results on aspects of our health without lots of traditional chemical laboratory work. But what is to come? People are working on ways of getting CO2 out of the air and turning it, by single step processes, into useful products (polymers, sugars and fuels) - all driven by solar energy! Some of the results of this modern green alchemy are already around us, and more are on their way, so watch out for these in a shop near you soon! There’s a really reliable, easy, low-cost and loweffort way to add some zing to your meals; homegrown herbs. Many herbs are simple to raise from seed and if you start sowing now you should be able to have a plentiful supply of fresh, tasty herbs to add to salads, sandwiches, stews and stir -fries for months to come. All you need to is a sunny window sill or balcony, or a well-drained, sunny spot in your garden. First, find some good quality multi-purpose compost, your chosen herb seeds and some pots. Good-quality compost is well worth the little bit extra you need to pay. The style of pot is up to you – you may want to choose a classic Mediterranean one, or perhaps a good-looking plastic planter for longevity and light-weight characteristics. Remember that plenty of drainage is essential, and that the smaller herbs do not need a deep root run, so there’s no need for a very tall planter or pot. It’s best to grow each type of herb in its own individual pot, so buy a selection of pots with a minimum diameter of 8cm.

taste off-season. Just half fill ice-cube tray sections with water. Add chopped fresh herbs to each section and top up with water. Label the tray as they can be difficult to identify. You can then simply pop them whole into stews and casseroles as and when you need them.

Once you have your pot to hand, put a broken flower pot or other drainage material in the base and then fill with good quality compost to within 1cm of the rim of the pot and firm it down, not too aggressively, but enough to ensure that there’s no subsidence later on. With large seeds such as coriander, position the seeds evenly on the compost surface. Sprinkle smaller seed thinly. The seeds need to be covered with compost so use your finger or a dibber to gently press the seed in to the very surface of the compost and then drizzle more compost on top to the depth stated on the packet of seed. Water the compost thoroughly either from above using a watering can with rose attached, or by standing the pot in a saucer of water for a few minutes until the compost surface is just moist.

The seeds generally germinate quite quickly and often within just a week or two you’ll have lots of tiny herbs. Once the herbs are up and growing strongly you can start to harvest them. Use sharp scissors or a sharp knife to cut off what you need; this way you’ll minimise damage to the growing plants and so help to keep them cropping for longer. As long as you keep the pots adequately watered, ideally by watering from the base, they should last for several weeks or months but make sure that the compost is not too wet or else your herb pots won’t last long. If you find that you’re not eating them fast enough, store some for later use. Ice cubes give you a really great fresh-herb
