Annual Report of Gifts 2007-2008 Army and Navy Academy

Teach Your Children Well ~ Crosby, Stills & Nash According to Wikipedia, Crosby, Stills & Nash is a folk/rock supergroup made up of David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash: “They are noted for their intricate vocal harmonies, often tumultuous interpersonal relationships, political activism and lasting influence on (music and) culture” What better way to describe the classic student/teacher bond? From the tumult of adolescence to the enlightenment and harmony of maturity, youth is nurtured in the cauldron of the classroom by teachers…and we thank them.

Dear Army Navy Family, It is my pleasure to serve the Academy at this historic time. As the cadence of our centennial begins marching us toward a grand 100th celebration in 2010, I can’t help but reflect on each one of you who helped write our prestigious history. The drumbeat of history tells us that every cadet who walked this campus, or the original campus in San Diego, had a part in making us the success we are today. Ten decades of educating young men can be attributed to great students, dedicated families and absolutely positive teachers. The battalion of Army and Navy Academy is composed of all those, past and present, who have graced a classroom, a dorm room or a playing field. It includes moms and dads who placed their faith in us. It embraces every alumnus…and there are thousands…who went on to become a successful adult. Stepping off in front is the multitude of teachers who, over the years, have given more than class time to grooming our young leaders. They’ve been on the athletic field, on the stage, in chapel and everywhere else on campus, making sure that our cadets have all the guidance needed to excel. They, indeed, “teach your children well,” as Crosby, Stills and Nash sing so beautifully. To all the members of our worldwide family, we thank you for your continuing support of the Academy. We look forward to seeing you on campus at any time, and most especially, during our centennial year of 2010. Sincerely,

Jack Wyatt ’63, Capt. USNR (Ret.) Chairman, Board of Trustees

Without the beard and civilian clothes, this young teacher could easily be mistaken for a student. Energetic and full of smiles, Ethan is, at just 26, a dedicated Academy teacher determined to make a difference in the lives of his Middle School charges.

“I love young people, forming their minds and teaching them to think for themselves.”

He could make more money in the corporate world or even in the surfing community. But this native San Diegan prefers the classroom to the proverbial boardroom. Why? “I love young people, forming their minds and teaching them to think for themselves. I help them to become good American citizens.” Ethan remembers being in middle school himself so he knows what restless young minds can concoct. He doesn’t seem to have any discipline problems with his cadets. He teaches history which he loves, and he coaches basketball and baseball…when he’s not surfing. “I’m a good fit here,” he says. Thank you, Ethan, for choosing education …and Army and Navy Academy.

Ethan Segovia, Middle School History Teacher

“My approach to education and athletics is one of developing individuals to the best of their potential.

Dean Raymond Ede with a student in 1970

Coach Rich Ede with his class at Claremont High School

Rich Ede as a senior in 1964

10

Rich says his late father, Dean Raymond Ede, was a subtle influence on him, and his decision to make teaching a career came naturally from a family of educators. Dad came to San Diego Army and Navy Academy in Pacific Beach to teach French and moved north as an administrator when the current Carlsbad campus opened. His lengthy tenure at the Academy certainly made it easy for his son to find his own niche in education. Recently retired from 34 years of teaching and coaching at Claremont High School, Coach Ede says he “works best with students who have the capacity to see the connection between work and results.” The many awards his teams have won over the years are certainly testimony to his natural ability with students. When asked about his time at the Academy, he says, “I grew up there.” He and his family lived on campus so, believe it or not, Rich was never allowed to be out of uniform. He didn’t even own a pair of jeans until he became a coach! Bonding experiences with his dad were many for Rich. During vacation times when cadets were away, he and Dean Ede made the rounds on campus turning outdoor lights on and off…there were no timers. They were the ones who raised and lowered the flag each day. The Ede family also played host to students from Saudi Arabia who were unable to go home for vacations. If the past is any indicator of a teaching heritage, the future looks bright for Rich and his family. His wife recently retired as a teacher. His daughter is majoring in sports psychology, and his daughter-in-law is a first grade teacher. Thank you, Rich, for your commitment to education.

“I didn’t want to disappoint freeburn my Dad, the commandant, so I got good grades.”

Chuck’s Senior Picture, 1952 Adjutant

The Academy Dance Band with Chuck and Major Al Polhamus as bandmaster

Academy Dean Phil Freebern, Chuck’s father

14

It was a huge transition for the young fifth grader to move from a public school in Long Beach to Army and Navy Academy when his dad became an administrator and future commandant here. Chuck had never worn a uniform. He’d never had a male teacher! He adapted quickly because music was becoming so much a part of his life. He started playing violin in grade school…because that’s what you did…but graduated to baritone horn at the Academy. Then it was on to the clarinet and saxophone under the tutelage of the legendary bandmaster Al Polhamus. Chuck talks warmly of the ride to school each day with his wise father, Phil Freebern, who gently coached him and set an example of leadership, organizational skills and gentlemanliness. Chuck spent almost as much time on campus as any boarding student…and a large portion of it in the band room, of course. It didn’t occur to the young cadet to make teaching his career until he got to college. After graduating from San Diego State, he kept moving up in two-year increments from high school music teacher, to college music teacher and, finally, to a 17-year career as Director of Music Education for San Diego City Schools. “I enjoyed all of it,” says Chuck, who has recently taken up the trumpet. We’re lucky that he stays in close touch with Academy Bandmaster Mike Donovan, a fellow trumpeter. Chuck no doubt imparts that same wise counsel to Mike that came from those daily rides with his dad. Thank you for sharing the rhythm of education with our youth.

“It’s about the Cadet.” So says Denis Anderson who came to the Academy in 1990 to start a whole new life and career after two-plus decades in the U.S. Marines. He soon discovered himself in many ways and came to understand that he was meant to teach young people. Denis likes to say that you stop thinking about yourself and learn to think of the student in all his multi-faceted personas. From the kid who was struggling with algebra to the one who was just having a bad day, Denis found the way to work it out.

“It’s about the Cadet.”

He grew to love his job quickly, and his military training served him well in establishing boundaries with the cadets. His sense of humor, easy smile and mischievous blue eyes helped him along the way, and he soon engaged the students in the world of mathematics. Denis, who retired last year after 18 years at the Academy, admits that he took the success or failure of every student personally. Fortunately, the successes far outweighed even the hint of failure from his days in the classroom. Does he miss it? On some level, he does. But he and wife Carola are adjusting to a more leisurely life and the joys of traveling the country in their motor home. Thank you for making education your second career, Denis. What’s next?

Denis Anderson, Recently Retired Academy Math Teacher
