A NEW SEASON OF SECOND SATURDAY A new season of Second Saturday will begin on September 12th at the Ashland United Methodist Church. ASHLAND UMW TO HOLD FALL LUNCHEON The Ashland United Methodist Women will hold their Annual Fall Luncheon on Saturday, October 24, from 11 am to 1 pm in the church basement. We invite everyone to come join us and to share this special time with us. The luncheon will feature a variety of home made soups, sandwiches and desserts. Cost for the luncheon will be $6.00 for adults, $3.00 for children five through twelve, children four and under may eat FREE. AMERICAN LEGION AND V.F.W. TO SPONSOR DANCE All over America, service organizations such as these are falling by the wayside. We in Ashland are fortunate to have two active groups, which have grown in number in the past year. They need your support!! On Saturday evening, October 24, a dance to the ―Big Band Sounds‖ (with a little 50’s town in for good measure) will be held at Yatesville School from 7-10 pm. Judy Kaye and Friends will provide the music. Last year’s dance was lots of fun - come see what you missed!! Admission is $5 at the door to help the Legion and V.F.W. as they help the community.

Jr. High Cross Country News The Jr. High Cross Country team consists of (3) girls Bailie Devlin, Kylee Fields, Becca Wegs and (3) boys Kolby Vandenbergh, Craig Houchin and Ty Kesselring. We have run 4 meets in Rushville, PORTA, Beardstown and Franklin. 3 of the 4 meets were medal meets with as many as 20 schools participating. We have had one runner Craig Houchin who medaled in Rushville (23rd of 140) and Franklin (10th of 190). Congratulations to Craig and the rest of the team for all their efforts.

A-C FFA HAD A BUSY SUMMER! Members of the A-C Central FFA kept busy with a number of events, starting out with Kassidy Stewart and Ian Abbott going to the State FFA Convention and accepting the Gold Emblem Chapter Award. Rebecca Werner, Brandon Stribling, Matt Mahoney, and Christopher Devlin also received their State FFA Degrees.

2009 Regional Points Champion Sr Stock & Lt 160

Later on in the summer Ian Abbott, Dustin Duckwiler, Kelsey Handy, Matt Mahoney, Nathan Mahoney, and Brandon Smith all participated in the Section 14 FFA Fair. Matt Mahoney had a grand champion Hampshire Gilt. They ended up earning over $700.00 Chapter Officers Ian Abbott, Nathan Mahoney, Haley Pfaffe, Brandon Smith, Morgan Wessel, and Danielle Bright once again all went to the annual Brandt Customer Appreciation Dinner to help Evelyn Thomas keep the place cleaned up and people happy. After taking a little break the FFA went on to the Illinois State Fair to help the Pork Producers. Ian Abbott, Danielle Bright, Nathan Mahoney, Haley Pfaffe, Krissy Simmons, Teagan Smith, Kassidy Stewart, and Morgan Wessel all served pork sandwiches to earn extra money to help out the chapter. A-C Central FFA would all like to thank Matt, Pat, and Jim Mahoney, and Darin Waters for all the extra help. We couldn’t have done it without you. After all the hard work over the summer the FFA members have returned to school and are anxious to participate in the following upcoming events: Horse Judging, the back to school cookout and serving a meal for Women in the Outdoors.

A-C CENTRAL FFA PLACES 4th IN HORSE JUDGING The A-C Central FFA started out their year by going to Cascade Ranch in Rochester for the Section 14 Horse Judging Career Development Event. They judged two halter classes, a Western Pleasure, and Hunter Under Saddle class. The team placed fourth out of twelve teams and team member Kyle Anderson placed tenth overall. A-C Central Serves Women Of The Outdoors The A-C Central FFA has gone on this year to help the Women of the Outdoors Organization by serving lunch during their 7th Annual meeting at Jim Edgar Panther Creek. The FFA would like to thank Jones Boys Market of Ashland for helping them with all food service preparations and Darin and Nyle Waters of their assistance as well! A-C CENTRAL MARCHING KNIGHTS WINS THE BEARDSTOWN FALL FUN FESTIVAL PARADE!! The Beardstown Fall Fun Festival was held on a very wet Saturday September 26, 2009. The parade will be one to remember for years to come. The bands stepped off in a light rain and continued the entire parade in a down pour. The Knights held true to their teachings and raised their heads and did an outstanding job for the large crowd on the streets of Beardstown. Bands in competition were: Large class: PORTA, Jerseyville, Rushville & A-C Small Class: Lewistown, Winchester, Astoria, Carrollton, VIT, Brown County Exhibition: Beardstown The parade winners in the band category were as follows: Large Class: 1st – A-C, 2nd – Rushville, 3rd – PORTA Small Class: 1st – Winchester, 2nd – Lewistown, 3rd – Carrollton Outstanding Drum Major – open competition: A-C Central

Congratulations to the A- C Marching Knights for a soggy win!!!

The Marching Knights will compete on October 3 in Barry for their Apple Festival Parade @ 1 PM and University of Illinois on Oct. 17, and rounding out the season with a performance for the Mac Murray Homecoming on Oct 26.

1st Annual Uncle Tykie’s Chili Challenge When: October 31, 2009 cooking starts at 10:00am Final Judges table is at 2:00pm Where: Uncle Tykie’s parking lot Why: Benefit to raise money for the Ashland Community Club to be used for Summer Days Who: Anyone who thinks they can make good chili and wants braggin’ rights 50/50 Prize Pool. 50% of all entry fees will be used as prize money, the remaining 50% of entry fees and 100% of sales of the event will be given to the Ashland Community Club. Live Remote with WJVO from 11:00am-1:00pm; celebrity judges Categories: Standard Chili, Alternative Chili, Hottest Chili, Appetizer, and Dessert. Grand Champion will also get trophy and picture on the wall at Uncle Tykie’s Bring your Own Tables, chairs and cookers (i.e Turkey fryers work great) you can prep your ingredients at home but ALL FINAL ENTRIES must be made on site and be able to be made in the parking lot. $25 entry fee for main category and $10 for each additional category. Entry form and registration fees can be turned in at Uncle Tykie’s Down Home Grill at 318 w. Fremont St. in Ashland, or at Printers Ink uptown on the square. Entries must be turned in no later than 5 pm, October 30, 2009.
