Oktoberfest When: September 22-October 7, 2012 Where: Munich, Germany Beer-drinking is a competitive sport in Munich and the Oktoberfest is all about drinking beer. This 16-day festival attracts over 6 million people every year. It consists of lots of beer and food, served in huge tents owned by different breweries, restaurants, and other establishments. There are bands playing traditional Bavarian music, as well as bands that play rock, pop, and dance music. Many visitors wear the Bavarian traditional costume. Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta When: October 6-14, 2012 Where: Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the largest hot-air balloon festival in the world. Over 700 balloonists participate in this event and it draws approximately 100,000 spectators. It is a truly spectacular sight to see the sky filled with hundreds of brightly coloured balloons of different shapes and sizes. The Fiesta includes day and evening activities such as Mass Ascents, Balloon Glows, the Special Shapes Rodeo, America’s Challenge Gas Balloon Race and evening fireworks. For further information

Takayama Festival When: April 14-15, October 9-10 Where: Takayama, Japan This is one of the three largest Fall festivals in Japan. The Takayama Festival is renowned for its brilliantly decorated floats (yatai) that move around the city at night. The intricate metal work, embroidered drapes and ornately carved floats mesmerise the onlookers. The puppet show, which also takes place on these days, is known as a ‘cultural asset’.
