The Aquarium and fresh water pools are a stunning attraction in itself, showcasing a beautiful mural of the Rakaia Gorge by world renowned muralist, Marc Spykerbosch. Added to this experience is a small 4D movie theatre, showcasing some of the magical adventure tourism activities located throughout Mid Canterbury and the Rakaia River, giving an added boost to local tourism. The Salmon World 4D movie experience is located in a small Theatre in the Salmon World building and seats up to 24 thrill seekers. The film lasts approximately 13 minutes into which Salmon World jam the very best of adventure experiences that our region has to offer. The 13-minute 4-D movie was filmed by Dunedin company 38 Pictures in 3-D, with enhancements to provide the fourth “dimension”. The 4-D movie experience already has movement and air blowing on adventurers and plans are being developed to add water spray to give that true feeling of being on the Rakaia River. The movie experience incorporates the following local adventure activities: Jet Boating in the lower Rakaia River and up through the Gorge with Discovery Jet. As Southern Gateway Visitor Centre is incorporated within the Salmon World complex, the friendly staff, are able to give helpful advice on what to see, what to do and where to stay go within the region. They can help with bookings including anyone wanting to experience the real thing after watching the 4D movie, making it a one stop shop for local tourism. The local artistic talents are showcased within the complex in the Rakaia Country Arts, a co-op of local artists. Fine arts and crafts all made within the region are sold through this outlet and they also host the Sunday Craft Markets throughout the summer. Salmon Tales Café and Restaurant has been in operation since November 2006 and has built a reputation based on fine food and great service set in unique surroundings. Salmon Tales offers indoor/outdoor flow including a large deck area which can seat up to 45 people, overlooking an established pond stocked with salmon and trout. The deck is an ideal setting for coffee, pre-dinner drinks or dining alfresco. The native plantings and sounds of running water have created a truly tranquil place. The Salmon Café and Restaurant interior
continues the water theme with a unique painted braided river floor. A relaxing carpeted area with comfortable leather chairs is situated alongside a large gas fire, a very popular place to be in the winter. The open plan dining area and stylish bar can be divided into intimate smaller areas or alternatively allows for large group functions, seating up to 80 people. The Salmon Tales Café and Restaurant is open 7 days a week from 8am including evening dining from Thursday to Sunday. Naturally the menu has a large salmon focus with a range of options including raw, home cured and pan fried salmon dishes. With everything made on the premises from locally sourced ingredients, their food is always fresh and inviting. A well stocked cold cabinet together with an inviting menu ensures there is something for every taste. Salmon Tales Cafés residing Chef is from Uruguay and brings a South American flavour to the dishes. Salmon Tales prides themselves on their great coffee from Caffe L’affare and their bar is stocked with quality New Zealand wines and beers. The Salmon World Complex is truely a destination of distinction, with activities, both fun and educational, visitor information and internet access, quality crafts, delicious food and fine New Zealand wines, making it a Must Stop for national and international visitors alike.
