■ RETAIL

In brief

Boulevard Day comes round again By Erin TaskEr

specials on the giftware that I have here,” she said. “It’s an opportunity to meet and greet customers out there and give them a bargain or two.” She said it was a great opportunity for people to find bargains and maybe start their Christmas shopping. There will be around 120 stalls ranging from plants and crafts, to clothing and numerous food stalls, along with entertainment for the kids. Timed to coincide with South Canterbury Anniversary Day, Boulevard Day brings plenty of out of town shoppers in, and its reputation is growing year after year. The weather forecast for Boulevard Day in Ashburton is for increasing cloudy periods, light winds and a chance of a shower. The forecast high is 17 degrees. Boulevard Day kicks off at 9am on Monday morning.

Shopping heads outdoors in Ashburton on Monday when the Ashburton Business Association hosts its annual Boulevard Day. Many Ashburton retailers will set up shop on the footpaths outside their shops for the day, alongside a number of stallholders from near and far, offering too-good-to-refuse bargains to what is traditionally a large crowd of shoppers. It’s the 37th year Boulevard Day has been held, and once again this year Ashburton’s main street will close to traffic, making way for a shopping bonanza. Denise Hydes from East Street shop Flowers and Balloons has been a long-time supporter of Boulevard Day, having set up a stall on the street outside her shop for a number of years now. “We’ll be out the front with our normal stall with lots of

Drink drivers Two drink drivers were picked up on the streets of Ashburton early yesterday morning. Both were men and one was stopped on Seafield Road and found to have an excess breath alcohol level of 615mcg. The other was stopped on Kitchener Street with a level of 990mcg – more than twice the legal adult limit.

A police dog handler was chased and threatened by a gun-wielding offender who stole the officer’s car and drove at him near Hamilton. New details have emerged over the incident which has sparked an internal police investigation, after the man took the officer’s vehicle at gunpoint and made off with the handler’s dog and weapon in the car. It was a frightening incident for the handler who only just managed to pull his canine partner from the vehicle as it was being driven off, Waikato Police district commander Inspector Win van der Velde said yesterday. Moments later the pair were being driven at by the offender, and had to take evasive action to avoid being hit by the police vehicle.

■ COUNCIL

Feedback wanted on new domain entrance By susan sandys

Ashburton District Councillors have decided their preferred option for a new Ashburton Domain entrance, and now want the public’s opinion. A new entrance is required as New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) proposes installing traffic lights at the corner of West Street and Walnut Avenue, and also an upgrade of the East Street and Walnut Avenue intersection. At an operations committee meeting yesterday councillors recommended to the NZTA that the domain access option of a new entry and exit off Walnut Avenue with a left NG

turn entry only from the current West Street entrance go forward for public consultation. The cost estimates for the recommended improvement

works are $2.6 million for the West Street Walnut Avenue traffic lights project and $1 million for the East Street Walnut Avenue upgrade.

In a report before councillors, group manager service delivery Neil McCann informed that the NZTA had advised the East Street intersection improvement works were a local project and should be funded by council. But it would attract a $560,000 NZTA subsidy. “Further discussion regarding funding and the timing of the improvement works can be finalised after the consultation process has been completed and options confirmed or identified,” Mr McCann said. Council had budgeted $60,000 in the 2013/14 financial year for the land designation required for the upgrading of the intersection.

Prime Minister John Key pirouetted from one side of the political fence to the other yesterday for his meetings in Britain going straight from an address to the governing Conservative Party caucus to meeting the man who hopes to be the next Prime Minister, Labour leader Ed Miliband. Mr Key spent much of the day at Chipping Norton, where about 230 Conservative Party MPs were gathered for their behind-closeddoors caucus “away day”. Mr Key said the Conservatives had been interested in how National was faring, how it was dealing with economic problems and how it won a second term - the Cameron Government faces the same challenge in 2015. - APNZ
