■ TINWALD INCIDENT

Cat back after pole adventure By Colin EngElBrECht Colin.E@thEguardian.Co.nz

A startled cat was the culprit in an almost hour-long power outage in Tinwald earlier this week. Benny is now back at home safe with his fellow cat Buddy, after he scaled a power pole on Wednesday evening. Maureen Pawsey, his owner, said it all started when her daughter was visiting on Wednesday and as she went to leave they noticed a cat halfway up the pole. Pawsey said at the time she didn’t realise it was Benny because it was too far away for her to see. However, when her daughter went further down the road she saw that it was Benny. Initially her daughter tried to reach him but it was just too high and he ended up climbing further up the pole to the first cross bar. It was at that point Pawsey said her daughter decided to call the fire brigade to ask if they could help get the cat down. Unfortunately because it was live wires the fire brigade wouldn’t be able to help out so a linesman was called. The power was cut to prevent Benny electrocuting himself and as the linesman used a bucket lift to get to Benny, the cat leapt off the pole and into a neighbouring property. Pawsey said it was not his usual behaviour and he’s never run away before. “We were just quite amazed that he didn’t get electrocuted. “He hasn’t been far since he came back,” she said. She said the three-year-old cat would sometimes visit Tinwald School across the road, or go to their neighbours to torment their small dogs. But for now Benny is happy sitting in his favourite chair inside.

Benny the cat is back in his chair after his power pole ordeal.
