Rebuild recruitment drive It was no surprise to Mr Doake that registrations had come in so quickly. “I think people just want to get out there and work, we have a high unemployment (rate),” he said. Mr O’Keefe said people would undergo a free six to ten week training programme and receive a living allowance, then be employed in drainage, roading, concreting, or repairs. “Anyone who can hold a stop/go sign, through to operating machinery, as long as they are prepared to work, that’s what we want,” he said. They encouraged school students at or above leaving age to pop into the bus, although if they were still in classes to make sure it was in their lunch hour.

Or their parents could call in on their behalf. “I think we are making it easier for people to find a job, we are coming to them,” he said. And the jobs could be the beginnings of a career for many. They said SKIRT’s general manager, Duncan Gibb, started out his career as a labourer. The polytech course would give recruits credits towards a level two qualification in infrastructure. Mr Gibb himself said the work offered by the rebuild would be important and rewarding. “People moving into this sector will have good income and career prospects with skills that are highly transferable,” he said.

period to complement and enhance the works on display. The exhibition celebrates the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’ birth, on February 7, 1812. It features a series of delightful watercolours by the British artist Paul Braddon, 1864 to 1937, given to the Dunedin Public Library by well-known New Zealand literary figure A H Reed in 1956. Braddon has illustrated scenes from many of Dickens’ novels, including Pickwick Papers, The Old Curiosity Shop, David Copperfield, Great Expectations as well as the unfinished Edwin Drood.

Vehicle damaged in spectacular fire

A vehicle was badly damaged in a spectacular fire in the old Aoraki Polytechnic car park on Cameron Street yesterday morning. The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was called just before 9.30am and firefighters could see the black smoke billowing into the air as they made their way to the station. The vehicle had been parked

in the car park when it caught fire around the engine area, but what exactly caused it to catch fire was as yet unknown. Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Alan Burgess said there were no suspicious circumstances and the vehicle was likely to be a write-off. No other vehicles in the car park were damaged.

Bikers spread message By Erin Tasker A group of motorcyclists will roar into Ashburton to promote an end to violence towards women tomorrow. They’re the White Ribbon Riders and they’re on a nine-day motorcycle ride in the North and South Islands which is a key White Ribbon project organised by the Families Commission to encourage men to take action and end unacceptable levels of violence towards women. Donald Napier of the Patriots said last year’s White Ribbon ride was fantastic. “We can’t wait to get on the road again and continue spreading the message. We know that men want to live non-violent lives but sometimes they need to be shown how. We hope to talk directly to those men who want to stand up and lead a movement of nonviolence,” Mr Napier said. “If you’re a perpetrator of violence, it’s no walk in the park to make changes to your life. To achieve this you need the support of your mates and your family. No one, especially women and children, should have to experience violence.” This year the riders will include messages about non-physical violence. “We’ve been talking about physical violence for a couple of years now and it’s fair to say most men understand how wrong it is to use their fists,” Rob McCann, Families Commission White Ribbon campaign manager said. “What is less well understood are the effects of non-physical violence.” “Non-physical violence can leave scars which no one can see, and that affect your whole personality. “We want men to understand how devastating non-physical violence can be and ensure they do not remain silent when witnessing such behaviour.” The White Ribbon Riders will arrive at the East Street green at 4pm tomorrow and people will have the opportunity to meet and chat to the riders, as well as check out the bikes. It’s the start of a busy couple of days of White Ribbon events in Mid Canterbury. Others include a free awareness barbecue on Friday at the East Street chessboard from 11am until 2pm, at which rugby league legend Ruben Wiki will make a special guest appearance and people will be able to sign the White Ribbon pledge. Wiki will also then be the special guest at a White Tie Dinner at the Hotel Ashburton on Friday night, at which the MC will be former All Black Jock Ross. Wiki will also hold a workshop with members of the Ashburton Barbarians league team while he’s in town.

Giving blood: Three-year-old Eliza McKenzie watches on as mum Nina gives blood yesterday. A young relative in their family has needed blood, so Nina wanted to give back.

Donors out in numbers By Sam Morton More than 600 Mid Cantabrians have given their fair share of blood and helped save plenty of lives this year, NZ Blood donor recruiter Dale Maisey says. The NZ Blood team was in Ashburton yesterday for its last visit of the year – and the response, once again, was fantastic. Nurse team leader Lisa Scott said she was delighted with the support of Mid Canterbury. “They are always brilliant – they always turn out and they always help our cause,” she said. More than 40,000 patients are treated with blood or blood

products in New Zealand every year, but according to statistics – only four per cent of the eligible population donate. Mrs Maisey and her team are actively trying to lift that figure and communities like Ashburton are doing everything they can to achieve that. In fact, she believes Ashburton is one of the most proactive areas when it comes to recruiting donors. “Put it this way, if more centres were like Ashburton, I’d be out of a job,” she laughed. “We have great business support down there and people are so willing to help ... they are practically lining up to donate, which is brilliant.” However, she urged new donors to sign up and said it was important the existing

donors did not get complacent. “We always need the new ones and a lot of the time, people will come in and see the place is humming and then think we don’t need them. “But we do, we really do and we are asking people to come in and donate to a life-saving cause,” Mrs Maisey said. Every donation can save up to three lives and a total of 3000 donations are required by hospitals every week of the year to meet the high demand. More than 600 people are registered as active blood donors in Ashburton and on average about 100 units of blood are collected each month from the district. *To give blood, ring 0800 GIVE BLOOD or visit, nzblood. co.nz by David Fletcher
