CLUB NEWS Hampstead Bowling Club It seems a long time since you last heard from me, blame the fax; didn’t operate properly. So here is a small update. The men have been flat tack playing Championships at Tinwald’s Green. The ladies have had a fairly quiet time; had a few tournament engagements with no major success, except they are keeping the flag flying for our small club. Talking about flags flying, a momentous occasion happened at our club on Saturday; we had our grand little opening of our Hampstead Green (at last). Later in the day played a few bowls on our pretty good green and ended with a barbie and social hour. We did appreciate all the accommodating Tinwald Bowling Club did for us and can’t thank them enough. “We will miss you”. On Monday the 10th of December I controlled the playing of our Hampstead Rosebowl Women’s Tournament we had; 7 rinks of 4’s and 3 games commencing at 8.30am. I asked the players if they were still happy for an 8.30am start and I got an emphatic yes answer. So thank you ladies, you have made my day and yours. We had a lovely morning and everyone seemed happy. Our kitchen helpers were Athol and Sparky, Margaret and Gavin Eder and I think Don was floating around somewhere. So many thanks to all for a well done job. Thanks Marg for your helpfulness to me, I very much appreciated it. You are a wee gem Wendy for your help too. The results are: 1st with 3 wins, 13 ends and 26 points R. Bennett’s team, Rakaia. She brought the Cup back gleaming brightly and won it back again; 2nd with 2 wins, 1 draw, 17 ends and 35 points M. Middleton’s team, Methven; 3rd Wendy Blackwell’s Methven team with 2 wins, 18 ends and 40 points. Congratulations girls well done! Our men have now got a rest from competitive play
and can concentrate on Championships and Tourns. We take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and safe Xmas and New Year. To those who have had bereavements during 2012, our thoughts are with you at this time. Also to those who are sick a big get well wish; to Ernie Hight our Patron; special thoughts and love and goodwill to you; to all at the Guardian Season’s Greetings and thanks for all our newsprint.
Mid Canterbury Ladies Probus Club President Colleen welcomed members to the December meeting of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Probus Club held recently. After members stood for the National Anthem a visitor was welcomed and birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated. Members were reminded that the next coffee morning is on 16 January. The raffles were drawn and the programmes had lucky numbers on them. New committee members are needed for the New Year. President Colleen read a poem about volunteers and how valuable they are to the community. A Christmas cake made by Gwen was shared at morning tea and the Christmas gifts were given out. Annette introduced Liam Kennedy-Clark, who had done well recently on NZ Has Talent. This 15 year old with the mature voice sang several songs including Silver Bells, Play Me a Dance, The Last Resort and Tipperary Girl. Then Geordie Robinson and Arthur serenaded the members with Set the World on Fire, Over the Rainbow, Come Home Once More and other songs. The thought for the day was “A quitter never wins and a winner never quits.”
Nor’westers Muso’s Club November 25th jam Getting to the end of another year and the jams just keep getting better and better, a good omen for 2013 I feel.

To kick off another terrific day we had up first, Leora Te Tomo on vocals and acoustic guitar joined by hubby - Dennis (Boy) helping out on drums. A blinder of a set, starting off with the 4 Non Blondes, “What’s Up “, “Yellow’ by Coldplay, some Travelling Willbury’s, the classic “Ode to Billy Jo”, and finishing up with “One Hand in My Pocket” by Alanis Morrisette. The subtle drumming complEmented some beautiful vocals and guitaring, great to see you back Leora, it was a real pleasure! Up next was a newcomer to the club, Mark Soster on vocals and acoustic guitar. It is always good to have new bods in the club and he pulled off a brilliant set, which went down real well with the good and appreciative crowd in attendance. Mark’s set included Simon & Garfunkel, Johhny Cash, Elemnop,& U2, with my favourite being his version of “Pair Of Brown Eyes”. You seemed to enjoy yourself Mark, we certainly did and hope to see you again for the December Jam. Next up Mid Canterbury’s own, singer songwriter exponent, Grant (G) Hopkins. No originals today but he put on a real treat with a medley of 16 songs, yep 16! - the title as only G could come up with - MEDLEY IN G. this ranged from Don Mclean to Greenday with 14 more thrown in. Some blistering acoustic work and vocals to boot, well done G, you certainly got the crowd interested, well done G. Paul Johnson on vocals and acoustic guitar was up next, and as usual did not disappoint, a nice bit of “Daytripping” from The Beatles, trying to” Change The World “ from EC, and just “Waiting On A Friend” from The Stones. Mary Had A Little Lamb was a beaut, Burton Cummings - “Break It to Them Gently was also a highlight, along with another 4 songs to complete a well-rounded set, cheers Paul. Next up was a first! We were treated to our first taste of “drumeokie”, and to steer us into this unknown and new era was none other than club favourite Hoover. It consisted of Hoover on the skins, belting out the numbers while singing the songs whilst listening to
www.guardianONLINE.co.nz
the iPod on the headphones - bloody brilliant!, the set being “Pretty In Pink” by The Psychedelic Furs, “Adams Song by Blink 182 & “How’s It Going To Be by 3rd Eye Blind. Keep coming up with them Hoov. Hoppy was up next with bit of a solo show with “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys, followed up with an instrumental number aptly named “ Devon Sunday Blues“, only Hoppy !!! all good stuff. Hoppy was then joined by Brother G, guitars & harmonising they ripped through Country Joe & The Fish’s classic Anti-Vietnam Song “Fixin To Die Rag, and finishing off with a kiwi classic “Stuff 0f Nonsence“ from Split Enz. To wind an entertaining afternoon off, we had a couple of off the cuff jam bands. Reg Owens, along with Mark Soster were on guitar & vocal duties, Aussie Phil was on the bass, with Hoover taking on the skins again. Starting off with “Tequilla Sunrise” from The Eagles, Paul Johnson then joined the stage with the lefty electric and vocals on some Three Dog Night and two other Eagles classics. Hoover on vocals we were treated to “Pyscho Killer, Mary Jane’s Last Dance, and Lou Reed’s “Romeo Loves Juliette”. Paul took over vocals with “Knocking On Heavens Door” & “Sweet Home Alabama”. Hoover rounded off the day back on vocals with “Get A Haircut” & a bit of Willie Dixon’s ‘Little Red Rooster.” All and all a terrific day with some top local talent again proving we have real talent here in Ashburton. The last jam of the year will be on Sunday 30th December (between Christmas & new year) as usual in Feeneys lounge at The Devon Hotel, so would be great to see a good turnout of muso’s and supporters for the final act of 2012. If the weather is good on jam days we hope to set all the gear up outside, fire up the barbie, and hopefully enjoy some nice weather while kicking back and taking in some sweet sounds. Also a reminder of the Nor’Westers Muso’s Club Xmas Celebration in Feeneys Lounge at The Devon this Saturday 22nd Dec, from 7.30 pm. 60’s & 70 ‘s Retro CD Night - get those old flares, platforms, medallions, kaftans, whatever you were wearing back then and put them on and come on down for a great nights entertainment.

“It is in his best interest, and ours, to have him back to his best for the rest of the season.” Ifill, who has been the club’s best player since his arrival in 2009, has been out of sorts this season and often been substituted early in games. He was also the subject of racist abuse in Wellington’s 3-1 defeat to the Reds in Adelaide on Sunday, an incident that is being investigated across the Tasman. The Phoenix, who are seventh on the A-league ladder, take on Central Coast in Wellington on Saturday. Jeremy Brockie, who missed the last game with a hamstring injury, is the obvious replacement for Ifill in the starting side. Paul Ifill: Phoenix’ best player

Ifill under the knife The Wellington Phoenix will be without Paul Ifill for at least the next month after the striker had his ankle operated on yesterday. Ifill had the surgery to clean out his right ankle, and physiotherapist Wayne Roberts said it would be four to six weeks before he is back in action. Head coach Ricki Herbert said it was disappointing to lose such an influential player over what is a busy period, but it was in the best interest of the striker to have the operation immediately. “The injury has obviously been affecting Paul’s form and, rather than wait until the end of the season, I felt it best to get it done now,” Herbert said.
