Ashburton College rowers travel north this weekend for the Maadi Cup National Secondary Schools’ rowing regatta at Lake Karapiro. College coach Steve Beveridge is hoping for a marked improvement on last year’s nationals which saw college miss out on racing in a single A final. Qualifying for 10 A finals and

two B finals at the recent shortened South Island Secondary Schools’ Regatta was a positive sign his crews were on the right track, but with day two of that regatta cancelled due to high winds some of the boats are light on racing. als, Veronica Wall continued her strong season with a gold medal in the girls’ under 16 final while the under 18 pair of Matthew Beveridge and Matthew Rae also won bronze. Beveridge was also awarded a bronze for qualifying third fastest in the under 18 single. The nationals are always a hard one to pick with the island rowers coming together, it is hard to gauge favouritism based on the respective North

and South Island regattas. The number of competitors entered is 2170, plus 189 reserves, making the 2015 edition the biggest ever regatta with a total of 2359 athletes. The largest entries come in the girls’ U17 single scull with 64, with 51 schools competing in this event, with a grand total 1468 crews entered across the 52 events on offer at the regatta from 122 New Zealand secondary schools.

The Maadi Cup is nominally the prize for the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Boys’ Under 18 rowing eights competition, but it has become the colloquial name given to the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Rowing Regatta, at which the Maadi Cup is the premier event. The regatta begins on Monday and runs for six days, with the event concluding on March 28.
