A unique exhibition of art By Megan gnad

Artists who worked on installation projects during Christchurch’s rebuild, have been brought together for a unique exhibition at the Ashburton Art Gallery. Members of The Social Collective, a group of artists who co-ordinated interactive and site-specific performances in the post-quake city, finalised their work yesterday, and took the opportunity to speak with visiting Mt Hutt College art students. An exhibition of their work opens in the art gallery on Saturday. The project is based on the two days that nine members of The Social Collective spent at Mayfield’s Overflow vintage shop, over the weekend, as part of an artist residence. Taking over a patch of grass at the site, they pitched tents and stayed in caravans, while meeting with members of the community and taking inspiration from the myriad of collectibles surrounding them. Christchurch artist Audrey Baldwin said their work focused on “being open, democratic, welcoming and low-frills”. “It’s been really nice to come together again,” she said. “We

Everything is on loan from Overflow, apart from a few items the artists purchased. The Social Collective exhibition opens at the Ashburton Art Gallery on Saturday at 2pm. It will feature the work of Mo-

toko Kikkawa, of Dunedin, Matthew Ward, of Auckland, Dave Marshall, Hana Aoake and Adrienne Millwood, all of Wellington, and Audrey Baldwin, Gaby Montejo, Lucy Matthews and Sandrine Castel, all from Christchurch.

Pecking his way to fame via the big screen By Sue newMan

Ashburton’s home-grown chook expert Brian Glassey is about to become a movie star. He and his fellow chook lovers will find themselves on the big screen in April when the ultimate reality movie The Pecking Order is released. Poultry shows and the men and women who tote their birds around the country seeking ribbons, medals and championship certificates might be the most unlikely movie subject, but director Kiwi film maker Slavko Martinov saw gold where others saw only chicken shit. Martinov became a regular at every event Glassey and fellow

Chopper pilot Steve Askin was a hero to his family and two young children. He was also a humble, selfless decorated war hero to his ex-SAS mates. To Christchurch, he died a hero last Tuesday, trying to help save the city from a vicious, rampant fire. Yesterday, the 38-year-old was farewelled at an emotional, poignant, thoughtprovoking and often hilarious at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand at Wigram. While stories of his courage and selfless derringdo in fighting the Taliban were shared, mum Leslie spoke about true heroes making a difference in people’s lives. “No mother wants a dead hero,” she said. “It doesn’t take going overseas and being an SAS warrior to be a hero. It’s to do what is right.” - NZME

Eligible for extradition

struggles and birds doing what they shouldn’t were perfect fodder for a movie maker wanting to capture action in a world that few will ever experience. Filming took place over two years and last week The Pecking Order trailer was released, complete with clips starring Glassey, his chooks and his fellow big bird fans. It’s a warts-and-all kind of movie, where the harsh bones of the show bird world are laid bare and it reaches just one conclusion – you’re either a show bench champ, or you’re dinner. The Guardian will publish a feature on Glassey, his birds and his rise to stardom in Saturday’s paper.

Kim Dotcom and his three coaccused are eligible for extradition to the US, the High Court has ruled in a decision released yesterday. The US Government has been seeking to extradite Dotcom, Mathias Ortmann, Bram van der Kolk and Finn Batato to face trial on 13 counts, including allegations of conspiracy to commit racketeering; copyright infringement; money laundering and wire fraud since 2012. Justice Murray Gilbert upheld a decision by the District Court that there were grounds for the quartet to be extradited. But the judge has also supported an argument made by Dotcom’s legal team that he and his former Megaupload colleagues cannot be extradited on copyright infringement grounds. - NZME
