Late night cricketing extravaganza T

he atmosphere is taut with tension, the milling crowds in the arena are heaving with anticipation, the rich, exalted and powerful are ready in their prideof-place boxes, strategically-placed combatants are at the ready, there’s a hulking great black fella roaming the arena looking like he could devour three or four Christians for breakfast all by himself, all is ready for the contest to begin. Is it another day at the Coliseum, with the uber-powerful rulers of the day set to deliver a life-ordeath sentence over the conquered ones as the howling, screaming crowd bays for blood? Well, nearly, this is the IPL. If you’re living in the right time zone, or working some particularly unsociable hours, almost every night you can watch live as the best cricketers in the world step out to test themselves against each other (and pick up a very nice pay cheque) in what is, like it or not, becoming one of the major events on the cricketing calendar. And that’s despite the whole circus being a blatant moneygathering exercise, a cash cow for those in charge, on the back of a continent populated by around a billion or so cricket-crazy Indians thirsting for as much of the game

as they can possibly get. That situation should be a serious worry for the ICC, but it doesn’t matter so much because that august body now revolves around India and what the Indians want to do, so that neatly solves any dilemmas that may have arisen there. All the biggest Kiwi names who were in the IPL at the start of this year’s contest have left the building, off to resume some unfinished business with the English team, although there is some representation; there’s three commentators still bringing us all the action. Danny Morrison is still a loud, verging on obnoxious presence, presumably its in his brief to be shouty and ultra-boisterous, although to be fair he’s a somewhat toned down version of the crazed, manic creature he was last year - if life is the only drug he was on then he’d found a remarkably powerful shot of it. Simon Doull is just plain awful, while Craig MacMillan is surprisingly good, getting hold his newfound craft much better than in his first couple of seasons, where he was floundering around well out of his depth. If you’re in the ‘why don’t YOU try doing it if you’re so critical’

camp, remember that these guys are getting paid, by me (and you) via that nice little SKY bill that comes in the mail regular as clockwork, to entertain, amuse and maybe educate a little as well with expert comments and opinions on the action unfolding before us. Like the politicians really, if you sometimes feel bad about giving them a hard time, just remind yourself that they are your employees, running the country on your behalf for your benefit, and if you want to rant a bit at or about them, then you’re perfectly entitled to do just that. Anyway, the parallels between the action happening a couple of thousand years ago and currently in the IPL really are quite close; the super-rich beautiful people (mostly movie stars) watch over their adoring public in the same manner that the all-powerful Roman lords and emperors did, the screaming

MOVIe

SKY MOVIES 1, 6.35pm A fresh update of the classic 1984 original which starred Kevin Bacon in the lead role. A young man, Ren MacCormack (played by Kenny Wormald, below), moves to a small American town where – shock, horror – rock ‘n’ roll and dancing have been banned. He soon falls for the local Reverend’s daughter, Ariel Moore (Julianne Hough, below), and his rebellious spirit shakes up the conservative populace. A by-thenumbers romantic drama, but still an entertaining teen distraction.

hordes filling the amphitheatre are from the same social strata in each case, and the next victim going out to face a fired-up Dale Steyn would certainly feel a few of the same shivers-up-the-spine as those heading out to meet a few hungry lions or monster fighting soldiers armed with every weapon imaginable. Are the players serious about it all, or is it just an off-season picnic for them (a particularly lucractive picnic)? Check out the bowlers when they’re hit to the fence, or watch a catch go down. Check out the captains when a boundary rider lets one through to the rope. Yeah, it might not be international honour on the line, but they still really, really want to win, their competitive spirit is what made them top players in the first place. So is it worth watching, or is it just a bash-crash fest that becomes tediously boring after few overs? Well, it’s just about at the sharp end, with teams desperate to sneak into the playoffs, and teams laden with the superstars of the game are doing their utmost to be in that mix at the end. What’s not to like?
