in 2010 was rated as the world’s second-best bowler, having been recalled to the squad after having recovered from the elbow injury that kept him out of the series in New Zealand over the summer. Hesson confirmed Southee would be fit to play. The 24-year-old injured a toe against the Lions and was rested from lunch on the third day. He went to London to see a specialist and receive some treatment but Hesson said it was very much a precautionary approach and Southee would play. Wagner is also fit after a toenail complaint, meaning New Zealand’s four frontline bowlers will all come into consideration for selection. The weather will also be a factor. The forecast isn’t promising, with rain or showers forecast for four of the five days along with cool conditions, and preparations will have been affected by frequent showers in London over the past few weeks. The Black Caps got a first look at the pitch yesterday when they trained at Lord’s but Hesson said it was too early to tell how it might play in the test. “It looks a good wicket with a good, even covering [of grass] but it’s still three days out so we are not getting too carried away,” he said. - APNZ
By Michael Brown New Zealand cricket coach Mike Hesson says they are now contemplating playing four seamers in the first test against England starting at Lord’s on Thursday night (NZT). It would be a departure from recent thinking. To this point, Hesson has always been keen on a balanced attack with three seamers and a specialist spinner. However, Bruce Martin’s struggles in the third test against England at Eden Park (0-130 off 65 overs) and again at Leicester in the final warmup against the England Lions (1-117 off 25 overs) might have altered that thinking. It would see both Neil Wagner and Doug Bracewell, who appeared to be battling it out for one spot, join Tim Southee and Trent Boult in the attack and leave batsman Kane Williamson as the only spin option. “Absolutely, that’s an option,” Hesson said. “We are not closed in our views in terms of who we play. “Whoever is left out, it’s going to be a tough decision but we have to pick the best side for the conditions.” England are expected to play a spinner with Graeme Swann, who

Matthew Beveridge, last year’s junior boys’ winner, was Ashburton College’s senior boys’ cross country champion at the Tinwald Domain yesterday.
Who made his ODI debut in 1991 against England at the Basin, 18 months after his test debut?
Champs on the podium again By Myles Hume It was a case of history repeating yesterday at Ashburton College’s annual cross country race. Last year’s junior champions reached similar feats again this year with year 11 pupil Matthew Beveridge taking out his first appearance in the senior
boys’ race and Mikhayla-Rose Stroganov claiming her second junior girls’ title in as many years. Beveridge posted a time of 18 minutes and 27 seconds for the 5km race at the Tinwald Domain, crossing the line shortly before runner-up Edze Bierema and third place-getter Nick Ralston. Stroganov, in the junior girls’ 3km race, ran in a time of
12min 24secs, closely followed by Charlotte Waddell and Libby Ross, respectively. In the junior boys’ 3km event, Cameron Jopson won with a time of 10min 34secs, while in the senior girls’ 3km race Emma Waite finished with a time of 12min 30secs. College sport co-ordinator Trevor Cochrane said 162 pupils

lined up for the non-compulsory event, and he was impressed with the high calibre of racing. “That then gives us the opportunity to pick a team for the Aoraki secondary schools’ cross country to be held in a few weeks’ time at Mount Hutt College,” he said. “We will look at the results then pick a team of 15 to 20 to take along.”
Question marks for Hansen over back three The All Blacks’ outside backs, rather than the midfield, are Steve Hansen’s biggest concerns heading into the June tests against France. Coach Hansen is confident veterans Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith will recover from their respective knee and head injuries, and Smith yesterday would have helped ease any lingering fears over his concussion when saying: “I’m feeling fine. I’ve felt surprisingly well since I took the knock.”

A more significant announcement will come on June 2 when the 30-player squad for the three France tests is named a week before the first test at Eden Park. In talking about his main area of concern, Hansen suggested Blues fullback Charles Piutau, another newcomer, could have a role to play. “It’s probably our back three,” said Hansen of his biggest worry. “With the likes of [Richard] Kahui
and [Cory] Jane both Wing Hosea Gear has being injured. Assuming the pair do recover, and Smith is targeting a return for the Hurricanes in a fortnight, Hansen said the midfield could be “very, very strong”. He has also named several exciting back-ups in his 38-man wider training squad for the two Mt Maunganui training camps to be held later this month. New to the midfield mix is Francis Saili from the Blues, with teammate Rene Ranger returning to the fold after his three tests in 2010. Highlander Tamati Ellison, with his team in South Africa and
