Fatal crash driver’s second

BY MAX TOWLE The Dutch businessman involved in a crash that killed three people near Rakaia had a previous crash in Canterbury, it has been revealed.

Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield confirmed information obtained by The Christchurch Star that Johannes Jacobus Appelman, 52, had been involved in

another crash in which no other party was involved.

Senior Sergeant Banfield would not discuss details of the previous crash. It formed part of the police investigation into the fatal crash near Rakaia, he said.

Appelman is not a tourist, but regularly visited Canterbury with business interests in the province.

Local farming sources told the Guardian he had interests in a Mid Canterbury horticultural farm run by Dutch nationals.

He has been charged with causing the deaths of Sumner woman Sally Summerfield, 49, her daughter Ella, and Ella’s friend Abi Hone, both 12, when his vehicle allegedly failed to stop at an intersection at Queen’s Birthday Weekend.

He has been remanded on bail to appear before the Christchurch District Court on July 10.

Mrs Summerfield’s husband Shane was seriously injured in the crash.

He was discharged from Christchurch Hospital on Monday, and is expected to attend his wife and daughter’s funeral at Sumner School.

police had ruled out both tiredness and speeding in the investigation.

He also said police did not believe alcohol was a factor, but were still waiting to receive results from a blood sample test.

Senior Sergeant Banfield said police would wait until after the funeral to contact Mr Summerfield to make a statement about the crash.

More than 200 feature films in 80 years is a record few can hope to attain and one who did is Donald Fauntleroy, though not many know that behind the name is none other than Donald Duck, one of Walt Disney’s most popular characters. Donald Duck, created by artist Dick Lundy on June 9, 1934, appeared for the first time in The Wise Little Hen an eight-minute short of the Silly Symphonies series (1929-1939), a mix of all the Disney characters. In that first appearance, Donald had only a supporting role but won the audience from the very first minute, mainly due to the practically unintelligible voice provided by Clarence Nash, who would dub the duck’s voice for 51 years until the day he died.

Nintendo says it’s adding real-world game figures to Wii U play to boost the popularity of its console, which has lagged behind rivals in the market. Nintendo is blending Will U virtual play with tangible toys as it faces off against powerhouse offerings from Xbox One and PlayStation 4 at an E3 gathering. The Japanese video game stalwart is jumping on a trend that has paid off for publisher Activision with Skylanders and for Disney Interactive with Infinity play launched last year with characters from Pixar film The Incredibles. “It’s been very successful,” Disney Infinity senior producer Sean Patton said as he showed off new Marvel Super Heroes interactive game pieces.

Even in 1916, locals wanted the Ashburton Domain kept in top shape. The Ashburton Guardian reported on June 12: The curator of the Domain has made a great improvement at the hospital entrance to the grounds. Large new gate posts have been erected and the drive re-formed and shingled. Trees which obstructed the view of motorists and others have also been removed. Teen heaven the hoodie that lets you text It’s the favoured apparel of surly adolescents, but teens can could soon use a hoodie to reconnect with the world.

The Smart Hoodie, invented by two American students, allows the wearers to send text messages by touching different parts of the garment. In the video demo, running your fingers along the inside of the hood sends a message saying “I miss you mum”, while pushing up the sleeves lets her know you’re stuck in class. Simply pushing a button on the sleeve can also start a Skype chat session. Users can change the preset messages and numbers to reflect other common templates. NYU students Rucha Patwardhan and Alina Balean came up with the idea after other wearable devices, such as Google Glass, were developed. The texting hoodie marks a departure from traditional hand-held gadgetry.

Ashburton father Joe Waru knows first-hand the devastation a moment’s inattention can cause when backing out of a driveway.

His friend’s young child died a few years ago when the driver of a car reversing out of a driveway in Ashburton failed to see the infant, a tragic incident that stays vivid in his mind.

Mr Waru was one of several supermarket shoppers yesterday who took part in a Plunket and Ashburton District Council public demonstration to highlight the importance

of driveway safety, after four Kiwi children were killed by vehicles reversing out of driveways since November.

Cardboard cut-outs of children were strategically placed at various distances behind a reversing vehicle at the demonstrations at the Countdown and New World supermarket carparks, proving how easy it is to miss youngsters in rear vision mirrors.

“It was pretty surprising, I was most surprised by how limited the visibility was. I could see the child at three metres from the car, but I couldn’t see any others,” Mr Waru said.

He said following the tragic

incident he was “always vigilant” and made sure the path was clear.

Ashburton District Council road safety project officer Aileen Campbell said more youngsters were riding scooters to school than ever before, and with that came a higher chance of a driveway accident.

“People need to drive forward out of their driveways and ensure that the driveway is not a playground, keep children away from there,” Ms Campbell said.

“And if you are going to reverse make sure you walk around and check the children are well away.”

Four children have died as a result of being hit by vehicles in driveways since November.

Every two weeks a child is hospitalised with serious injuries after being hit by a vehicle in a private driveway in New Zealand.

A further five children are killed a year, on average, in the same way.

Most children injured in driveway incidents are toddlers, aged about 2.

Young children are not being signed up for dental services early enough and are threatening their oral healthcare, according to an Ashburton dentist.

Justin Wall has been a member of a national Oral Health Reorientation Evaluation Research Project advisory board for the past 18 months.

The board has been evaluating the current child and adolescent oral health programme.

Mr Wall said the enrolment of preschoolers, primary and adolescent-aged children was one aspect under review. There was limited enrolment information available on preschoolers.

“Enrolment at five is reasonably straight forward because you do it through the school but by then it may be too late. So what we’re trying to do is find out what happens before then.”

Canterbury School and Community Dental Service clinical director Martin Lee was unable to provide the Guardian with dental enrolment rates in Ashburton.

There were no figures available before 2011.

Mr Wall said there were a lot of people who were funded to deal with this issue but either the data was not collected properly or people were not doing it.

The school dental service was reorganised years ago after a shortfall was identified with the number of young children enrolled.

The changes were meant to make it more proactive rather than reactive. Mr Wall said as a result efforts were made to turn it around and they looked at the facilities and their functions. It cost the Government $116m.

Chance to get back to basics

Two Ashburton women have put their heads together to bring a range of people with traditional living ideas into one space.

Julia Crosson and Katie Esler have organised an inaugural Back to Basics natural savvy living expo at the end of the month. They also had a dedicated Facebook page.

More than 80 people with traditional methods of living were already booked and keen to share their techniques. Mrs Crosson said in the modern world people sought information off the internet but if ‘Granny Google’ broke down, where would people go to for help.

She said the expo would be like an “interactive You-Tube”, where people could ask questions to site holders at the expo and take away information bags gathered during the expo.

Site holders included people with methods on how to grow food, use in-season foods, preserving, home remedies, budget advice, homemade games, sewing, knitting, DIY cleaners and emergency preparation. But there was much more.

The methods were as natural and as do-ityourself as possible, said Mrs Crosson. She said as the cost of living increased people needed some inspiration on how to live better, cheaper and in a healthy sustainable way.

Trish McLaren, known as Granny Trish, had reserved one such site to showcase her preserving skills.

She also knitted and had some colourful wool blankets and premature baby jumpers destined for Ronald McDonald House that she made from leftover wool.

One of her own blankets was made with the jersey wool from children’s former Hinds School jerseys – a great way to recycle unused wool into a functional modern item.

Her traditional preserving recipes would be available at the expo; giving away ageold family secrets to other interested people.

Finished products would also be available to taste.

Mrs McLaren has always used fruit and vegetables from her extensive garden. She also received a lot of surplus produce from friends and family who knew it would be used, not wasted.

The expo would be at the New Life Church premises, 58 Melcombe Street, Tinwald on Saturday, June 28. It will run from 1pm until 4pm. Entry is free.

The Rakaia Medical Centre is searching for a permanent doctor for its busy rural practice. However, locum Dr Maria Reeves will be in the hot seat for the next five months as a recruitment drive continues. Dr Reeves started this week to replace Dr Robert Wolf, due to finish on Friday. Dr Wolf was doctor at the centre for 11 months. He has headed back to America. “We are looking at all our options at the moment. Finding permanent doctors’ is a bit of a hard job,” Rakaia Medical Centre practice manager Sue England said. “We are pretty close to Christchurch and Ashburton so I consider we have got the best of both worlds but doctors on a hole are in scarce supply really.”

An elderly Greymouth man attacked by two dogs as he was out walking on Tuesday needed hospital treatment. Grey District Council environmental services manager Steven May said the 75-year-old suffered puncture bites to his leg. He was first attacked by one dog as he passed a house in Freyberg Terrace. “The owner came out of their house and a second dog also came out and unfortunately joined the other dog that was attacking the man,” Mr May said. Both dogs, a blue healer and collie, were later impounded by the council dog control officer.

A false invoice produced by Paul Michael Brown and purported to be from “Provincial Livestock” had no links to Methven-based Provincial Livestock Company Ltd, company director Paul Dixey confirmed yesterday. The company also had no links to Brown’s unsubstantiated, and later retracted, claim that it had verbally agreed to buy livestock, Mr Dixey also confirmed. “Provincial Livestock“ was mentioned in court when Brown was convicted for perjury and perverting the course of justice last week. It appeared in the Guardian’s court report on Saturday. Mr Dixey said the court reference was to a North Island consulting company with a similar name.

An Ashburton father has moved to dispel an alarming Facebook awareness campaign asking people to contact police if they had seen a “missing” teenager who is his son.

Steven Hurst said yesterday his son is alive and safe but was shocked at an “exaggerated” Facebook post circulating on the social media site which stated his son, Josh William Hurst, had been missing since Friday.

The post urged the public to contact authorities if they had information, and displayed a large picture of Josh.

“He’s been wandering around, but he’s safe and he’s been at home. The police had always known where he was . . . he’s been

gone and back and home again and been swapping around,” he said.

“Hopefully he’ll get it together and realise what he’s doing, but he definitely isn’t missing. I don’t know who the hell put that up there.”

Mr Hurst said he was concerned his son had been away from home since Saturday, not Friday, and returned three days later on Tuesday night.

He said he was in constant contact with a police youth aid officer who was aware of his whereabouts.

Mr Hurst was made aware of the Facebook campaign yesterday by a workmate, but said he was keen to contact the person who created it to correct what was posted.

He said Josh, who has four other siblings, returned to his course yesterday.

A Te Puke man who violently assaulted a police detective who suffered a cut to his cheek, a black eye and three damaged teeth has been jailed for 13 months.

Leon Ratahi, 20, was sentenced in Tauranga District Court yesterday after he earlier pleaded guilty to one charge each of disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence to occur, threatening to kill, assaults police. He also admitted three charges each of resisting police and wilful damage. Ratahi assaulted Detective Mark Farrell while the officer was attending a domestic-related incident between Ratahi and his pregnant partner at their home on April 30 this year.

The threatening to kill charge and wilful damage charges relate to Ratahi’s pregnant partner, who called police after Ratahi also broke a window and threw around tables and chairs.

Many Mid Cantabrians are only just discovering now they have been cut out of their former Rangitata electorate.

“It did surprise me, to be quite honest it peed me off a little bit,” said Rod Clibborn, whose Lyndhurst farm is just five kilometres from Methven.

He was recently officially informed of the change by mail.

He had had a good relationship with the Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew, and had not even known who the MP for Selwyn was, although he had since found out it was National’s Amy Adams.

Lauriston School principal Dianne Prendergast said she suddenly felt “ousted” from the greater Mid Canterbury area when she found out about the boundary change.

She said while effectively it was a line in the sand, however one’s voted MP was the person who represented the district to which they were attached.

“How does that continue to happen when the Selwyn electorate now takes on the interest of four Mid Canterbury schools and covers territory all the way to the peninsula?”

It drew up the interesting situation of Mount Hutt College and Lauriston School, which

“If it came to the situation the board of trustees in its governance role wanted to pass their concerns about a particu-

lar issue, they would have to make sure they were dealing with the right person or both MPs,” Mrs Prendergast said.

Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay, who farms on Reynolds Road, remains in the Rangitata electorate.

The Ashburton District Council had made a submission opposing the boundary changes when they were first proposed. They were at the time much more conservative, “but the final boundary has come a lot further”, Mr McKay said.

“It’s always nice to have the whole district in one constituency, on the other hand it can be of value to have two constituencies representing a district.”

“The present Member of Parliament looks after us very, very well, but we will have the opportunity after the election of talking to the Member of Parliament for Selwyn (for issues relating to that area),” Mr McKay said.

The new boundary line, confirmed in April, follows the Rakaia River as far as Highbank and then travels across country to a point near Cairnbrae before heading to State Highway 1 at Dromore. Crossing the highway the boundary travels towards the coast via Seafield.

The Mt Hutt Facebook post attracted over 100 likes in three hours by late yesterday afternoon, and over 25 comments, including from those who were in Australia booking their holidays.

He said there were processes for “at risk pre-schoolers” and the service followed national guidelines for older children.

“We have good enrolment rates in general and have no reason to believe there are any issues specific to Ashburton that would reduce rates there.”

Mr Lee said here and elsewhere there were processes to identify at-risk pre-schoolers and ensure they were seen as a priority.

A 13-year-old boy accused of murdering a west Auckland dairy owner by stabbing him in the neck inside the dairy has appeared in court.

The boy, who cannot be named because of his age, appeared in the Waitakere Youth Court yesterday and entered no plea to a charge of murdering father-of-two Arun Kumar.

Judge Lisa Tremewan said the boy would next appear in the High Court at Auckland later this month. He will remain in custody until then.

He did not enter a plea on the other charge he faces - of assaulting Mr Kumar with intent to rob him.

A 12-year-old boy, who also appeared yesterday, entered no plea to the joint charge of assault with intent to rob.

The 12-year-old will next appear in the Waitakere Youth Court next week. He will also remain in custody.

Principals ‘cautiously optimistic’

Mid Canterbury principals remain “cautiously optimistic” over what is touted to be one of the biggest educational overhauls in more than two decades.

That is despite education unions going cold this week on the Government’s plan to invest a massive $360 million over the next four years, seeing 6000 leading teachers and principals paid extra to improve achievement.

The scheme will see four new roles imbedded in the manage-

ment structure of schools, being executive principal, expert teacher, lead teacher and change principal.

The NZEI and New Zealand Principals’ Federation this week had fallen out of favour with the scheme, saying the money could be better spent.

But Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Chris Murphy said local principals were optimistic about the change which is believed to be the biggest since the introduction of Tomorrow’s Schools in 1989.

“Like the union says, $360 million invested elsewhere in education could come up with equally or even better outcomes, but if this is mandated I think we can still make the best out of it.”

The overhaul would include an extra $40,000 a year for principals who take two days out a week to work within groups of up to 10 schools.

Mr Murphy said that would encourage more collaboration between schools, which would team up to work on addressing shared issues such as achievement levels and attendance.

However, he said the substantial cash carrot was not in the front of principals’ minds.

“I’ve been talking to other principals about this and none have mentioned the money side of it. The ones who said they would like to have a go are looking at it as something that will benefit the sector and improve their own repertoire of skills,” he said.

Mr Murphy said some schools remained sceptical of so much investment into “relatively few people” and others viewed it as a ploy for the Government to

wrestle control from boards of trustees.

Mount Hutt College principal John Schreurs said the “devil remained in the detail”, and questioned how schools would fare when relievers were constantly called in to replace teachers or principals taking days out to work with in the groups. The Government says the scheme will also see a new allowance to get the best principals to needy schools. The new roles will help recognise highly capable teachers and principals, keeping good teachers in classrooms.

Dan Carter underwent some intense questioning at Carew Peel Forest School yesterday.

He was asked everything from what he ate for breakfast, to who had helped him most with his goal kicking, what impact his wife Honor had had on his career, and whether fatherhood had changed his outlook on life and rugby.

No question went unanswered.

The All Black is this weekend expected to play his first game of rugby in many months, using Southbridge’s clash with Glenmark to return from his sabbatical, but yesterday he took time out of his busy schedule to visit the rural Mid Canterbury school with a cheque for $10,000 in his hands.

The money is to go towards sports gear for the school and was all thanks to Peel Forest woman Rachael Linklater, who won a nationwide promotion run through Healtheries and Countdown supermarkets. She won

a $1000 sports package for her own family, which includes three young boys, and a $10,000 sports package for the school of her choice, delivered

by Carter.

Carew Peel Forest School was her school of choice. The school has a roll of just 75 students and they came dressed in Crusaders and Southern rugby jerseys, rugby socks and even netball uniforms for yesterday’s special visit.

When Carter arrived, an excited group of students was waiting for him at the gate before he was ushered away to speak to waiting media, and then into the school hall for the presentation and questions and answers.

The children delved deep, asking Carter what he liked to do in his spare time and where his favourite holiday destination was. He answered Fiji – where he was just a couple of weeks ago – and spending time with his family, including 14-month-old son Marco. That’s something he’s got to do a

lot of in recent months while on sabbatical and while he loved it, he was itching to get back on the rugby field this weekend.

Carter had questions for the children too, asking them what they wanted to do when they grew up; a question that drew answers including a rugby player, a netballer and an artist. Carter told them to chase those dreams.

“There’s nothing more satisfying than living your dream,” Carter said.

“When I was your age I always thought it was going to be too tough but anyone can achieve their dream with a lot of hard work and dedication.”

Carter said it was great to visit such a small rural school, and to bring such great news with him in the form of the $10,000 surprise.

“It’s a great way to give back to a little community like this and hopefully inspire a few kids here to go on to greater things,” Carter said.

Who is the best coach you’ve had?

My first coach was my neighbour, but the best would be Wayne Smith. I learnt the most from him.

How fast can you run the 100m and who is the fastest All Black?

I haven’t run 100 metres in a long time actually but my best time used to be just under 12 seconds.

And the fastest All Black used to be Joe Rokocoko, but now it’s possibly Israel Dagg, or Julian Savea.

Who are your closest rugby friends?

Richie McCaw and probably Ma’a Nonu, but they are all my friends.

What role has your wife Honor played in your success?

She’s very healthy so she makes sure that I eat all my vegetables and fruit. My diet is all about eating healthy and she makes sure I do that every day.

Has your son Marco changed how you feel about rugby?

Yes. Before I had a baby you played a game and if you didn’t play so well you’d go home and feel bad for a couple of days, but having a baby … they don’t care if you had a bad game or a good game, you’re just their father.

How do you cope with being in the public eye continuously?

It’s all part of the job and I remember being your age and being lucky enough to meet people like me, so I’m happy to return the favour. You do have to be careful, well behaved and polite, but in a couple of years I probably won’t be playing anymore and everyone would have forgotten about me.

Study carrot for sole parents

Mid Canterbury solo parents will be offered a carrot to get into full-time study, but they have to wait until next year to benefit.

As of mid next year a sole parent who starts full-time study will get the same amount of accommodation support as they do on a benefit. It was announced by the Government this week.

Ashburton’s Salvation Army captain Ken Smith said it was unfortunate those who legitimately wanted to study did not get that consideration until next year.

“It is a shame because if there is legitimate opportunity for study, to get a solo parent back into the work force through study, why should they be penalised?” said Captain Smith.

At present, there was a disincentive for sole parents to take up full-time study because they no longer receive accommodation support as a student. The support is worth up to $165 a week.

The Government said they would invest between $18 million and $24m over four years to align student support payments with welfare payments.

It was estimated that 3000 more solo parents would take up full-time study in the first four years.

Captain Smith said a qualification gave people a different perspective on their life.

“Qualifications perhaps represent a different outlook on life, it speaks about motivation,” he said.

“For some it has been about the right opportunities. They have been in the right place at the right time and they have had an opportunity and they have seen that they can succeed.

“It’s motivated them to go further, to get ahead rather than say this is my lot in life.”

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett said sole parents with no qualifications spend an average of 17 years on welfare, compared to seven-and-a-half years for a sole parent with a

tertiary qualification.

The policy partly reversed changes made in welfare reforms last term, in which the Government scaled back access to the training incentive allowance, currently $106 a week.

As part of the new changes, the Government planned to allow sole parents to continue to receive child support while they claimed a temporary benefit during academic breaks.

It will also abolish an up to two week stand-down period for support when students begin their academic break.

The change to child support and the abolition of the standdown period will require a law change and was expected to be in place at the end of 2016.

Driving charges The following people appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court on Tuesday.

• Tongia Vakaafi, 37, of Netherby, admitted drink-driving with an excess breath alcohol level of 595 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath (EBA 595mcg/l). He was disqualified from driving for six months, fined $500 and ordered to pay court costs of $130. He was convicted and discharged on a count of driving while forbidden.

• Nathan Peter Neil Chesmar, 21, of Tinwald admitted charges of drink-driving (EBA 928mcg/l) and careless use. Chesmar lost control of his car and crashed into a business premises on the corner of Moore and West streets after doing a burnout on April 26. He will be sentenced on July 24.

• Dylan Timothy Duffy, 23, of Netherby, admitted drinkdriving with an excess blood alcohol level of 134 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood (173mg/ml). He was disqualified from driving for six months, fined $400, ordered to pay court costs of $130 and medical and analyst’s fees of $168.

• Tessa Ann Robin, 28, of Allenton, admitted charges of drink-driving with a blood alcohol level of 173mg/ml, careless use and possessing cannabis.

She was convicted and disqualified from driving for six months, fined $800, ordered to pay court costs of $130, and medical costs of $130. Robin was convicted and discharged on the cannabis and careless use charge.

• A warrant was issued for the arrest of James Robert Grant.

Chickens destroyed At least 500 chickens have been destroyed in a Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) operation at a property near Hokitika. The Kaihinu property, a former market garden, remained cordoned off and under quarantine on Tuesday as MPI set about euthanising the birds, which it is understood were infected with tuberculosis (Tb).

Acting Sergeant Jason Martin, of Hokitika police, said about 450 had been killed on Monday, and the destruction continued on Tuesday.

Kiwi safe and well A New Zealander who was known to have been in Syria is safe and well in California, according to his family. A New Zealander who Prime Minister John Key said the Government had “lost contact” with is believed to have been killed fighting in Syria. The unidentified man would be the first New Zealand casualty in the Syrian civil war, where a small group of Kiwis has joined the rebel forces.

Chinese-born artist Weiming Chen has a New Zealand passport and has travelled to Syria to fight alongside the rebel forces. His nephew, Alexander Karsten-Chou said Mr Chen had been in touch with family from California, so they knew he was alive and safe, after news broke of a New Zealander being killed in Syria.

Body found in house The body of a woman found on Tuesday in a Dunedin house may have been there for some time, police said. The body was found around midday on Burnett Street, Calton Hill. The house is cordoned off by police as they investigate the circumstances of the death.

However, police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the death and it appeared the body had been there for some time. - APNZ

Keen Mid Canterbury wildlife photographers will find out how their work has been received this week by renowned natural history photographer Rod Morris.

Mr Morris, based in Dunedin, will be at the Methven Heritage Centre tomorrow for the unveiling of the Biodiversity Photographic Competition exhibition, which will be open to the public from Saturday until June 27.

There were 113 entries received for the competition, held by the Ashburton branch of the Forest and Bird in conjunction with the Ashburton Photographic Society.

Entries are mostly from Mid Canterbury and further

afield, and photographs are of wildlife, taken in Mid Canterbury.

Organiser Warren Jowett said results would be announced at the competition opening, where there would be about 40 of the works framed and on display. They were the works chosen by Mr Morris, among which will be the prize winners.

Due to his involvement in organising the competition, Mr Jowett, himself an entrant, was party to the results.

“The standard was high,” Mr Jowett said.

“I didn’t do as well as what I thought I would have, it’s a humbling sort of experience and that’s the nature of photographic competitions, you have a judge who has standing

and recognition and he or she makes the call.

“It will be a good learning experience hearing what he thinks.”

As well as the photos which were entered, there were additional photographs of a wrybill and a crested grebe which would be on display.

“We thought we couldn’t have an exhibition of Mid Canterbury wildlife if you didn’t have a wrybill and a crested grebe.”

Following the heritage centre, the exhibition would be at the Ashburton Arcade from July 1 to 11. Later in the year it would be passed on to the Ashburton museum, to be held as a permanent record of Mid Canterbury’s wildlife in 2014.

A 69-year-old women was found trapped in mud and hidden by bamboo down the Matarawa Stream in Kowhai Park in Wanganui yesterday. A man walking along the stream heard the women’s cries for help before alerting authorities. Police, ambulance and fire officers arrived at the scene at about 9.45am. The women was pulled out and taken to Whanganui Hospital.

Strep A outbreak Five elderly residents of a Christchurch rest home have died after an outbreak of strep A. Six female residents, aged between 86 to 97 years, were rushed to Christchurch Hospital on May 30 after contracting the infection. Five of them have subsequently died, with one remaining in hospital in a stable but serious condition.

The rest home, owned by Ultimate Care Group, has swabbed and tested the other 70 residents, but none have tested positive. But as a preventative measure, all other residents have been give a course of antibiotics, said Ultimate Care Group general manager operations Ron Spraggon. It’s still not known how the infection made its way into the Addington rest home.

In brief Bizarre hazing The navy is taking action against eight sailors following allegations of bizarre hazing rituals aboard the frigate HMAS Ballarat. Some could be booted out while others receive formal warnings. The eight have the opportunity to respond before any formal action is taken.

Claims of misconduct aboard Ballarat emerged last year and the navy has never disclosed the substance of these allegations.

But after the defence investigation was made public, a former naval member claimed sailors were “set upon, stripped off and had things essentially put in their bums”.

That was apparently to mark sailors’ birthdays.

Teen gunman kills student A teen gunman armed with a rifle shot and killed a 14-year-old student and injured a teacher before he likely killed himself at a high school in a quiet Columbia River town in Oregon, authorities said.

The Oregon violence yesterday came less than a week after a gunman opened fire on a college campus in neighbouring Washington state, killing a 19-year-old man and wounding two others. It follows a string of mass shootings that have disturbed the nation, including one on Sunday in Nevada that left two Las Vegas police officers and a civilian dead.

After the shooting stopped at the Oregon school, police spotted the suspect slumped on a toilet in a bathroom at Reynolds High School. Officers used a robot with a camera to investigate and discovered the sus-

pect was dead and that he had likely killed himself, Troutdale police spokesman Sgt. Carey Kaer said.

His victim was identified as freshman Emilio Hoffman, who was “loved by all,” police Chief Scott Anderson said at a Tuesday news conference. He said Hoffman was found in the boys’ locker room.

A girl who used to be Hoffman’s girlfriend said he was “a good kid” and a “down-to-earth guy.”

“He was very caring, he loved to joke around,” said Savannah Venegas, 16.

Hoffman lived with his mother and had an older brother and two younger sisters, both in elementary school, Venegas said.

Anderson said he spoke with Hoffman’s family, saying they had a difficult road ahead and sought privacy.

Hoffman didn’t have enemies and “didn’t stir up trouble,” Venegas said.

“They wouldn’t have just picked him,” she said. “It had to be, just, random.”

Authorities have tentatively identified the gunman but his name is being withheld until his family is notified, Anderson said.

The teacher, Todd Rispler, had injuries that were not lifethreatening, and he was treated at the scene. Rispler, a 50-yearold physical education instructor and former track coach, went to the office and initiated the school lockdown, Anderson said. The attack panicked students and they were told to go quietly to their classrooms.

On Tuesday evening, teens on skateboards and others accompanied by their parents joined Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber at

a prayer vigil at a church about 8km from the shooting scene.

“I’m here for him, for Emilio,” 15-year-old Jose Medel told The Oregonian. Medel is a freshman who said he played soccer for several years with Emilio Hoffman.

Earlier, freshman Morgan Rose, 15, said she hunkered down in a locker room with another student and two teachers.

“It was scary in the moment.

Now knowing everything’s OK, I’m better,” she said.

Anderson said two on-campus police officers were the first to respond to reports of a shooting. The officers and a tactical team sent to the school “brought this to a conclusion,” the chief said, without elaborating.

Child labour up in typhoon-hit villages More children are doing harsh and dangerous work in Philippine villages hit by Typhoon Haiyan last November, the United Nation’s labour agency says.

The International Labour Organisation said a joint assessment made in March and April by the UN and other humanitarian organisations and Philippine authorities showed 54 per cent of 112 surveyed villages reported that children were involved in harsh and dangerous labor, with 39 per cent of them saying the number of

such children increased after the typhoon struck.

The typhoon killed more than 6300 people and displaced 4 million others, worsening pov-

erty in the central Philippines.

The villages and 125 schools surveyed were randomly selected from two central regions most affected by Haiyan, with individuals interviewed from each village or school.

Giovanni Soledad of the ILO’s child labour program said it was not clear how many more children started working in dangerous conditions after the typhoon. He said further assessments will be done to find out where the children are so services can reach them.

But government data prior to

the typhoon showed as of 2011 that there were 1.6 million child workers aged 5 to 17 in the two regions covered by the assessment. Of that number, more than 450,000 were engaged in hazardous work.

The joint assessment said 82 per cent of villages reported that the children had volunteered to do harsh work to support themselves or their families. Many work in farms and as household workers. Others are vendors, construction workers, fishermen, scrap collectors or pedicab drivers.

Driving too much is bad for your health, according to a a study of 40,000 middle-aged Australians.

Two hours a day is too much, with these drivers much more likely to be fat and inactive than other people in their age group. They are also more likely to smoke and to be stressed and sleep-deprived.

“The more time people spend driving, the greater their odds of having poor health and risk factors for poor health,” said study leader Dr Ding Ding, from the University of Sydney’s School of Public Health. “The study’s findings are relevant to middle aged and older people who drive on a daily basis, for any reason, not just professional drivers,” Dr Ding said.

Ferry owner on run Thousands of South Korean police officers stormed a church compound Wednesday in their hunt for a fugitive billionaire businessman over April’s ferry sinking that left more than 300 people dead or missing, officials said. Authorities believe the businessman, Yoo Byungeun, owns the ship and that his alleged corruption may have contributed to the sinking. Police and prosecutors have been after Yoo for weeks and are offering a $500,000 reward for tips about him. Yoo is a member of a group called the Evangelical Baptist Church, which critics say is a cult.

About 5000 police officers, accompanied by prosecution investigators, raided the group’s compound yesterday. Four church members were detained for allegedly helping him.

Terrorist arrested A senior Philippine Islamic militant on the US government’s “most wanted” list has been arrested in Manila, authorities say, after a man-hunt lasting seven years.

Khair Mundos, who had a $NZ540,979 US government reward on his head, was detained yesterday close to the capital’s airport where he was staying with relatives, the police and military said after a joint raid. The US State Department’s “Rewards for Justice” website describes him as a “key leader and financier” of the Abu Sayyaf, an Islamic militant group blamed for the worst extremist attacks in the Philippines. The group, founded with seed money from al-Qaeda, is believed to have only a few hundred militants.

Growing bigger – it’s hard work Stu Oldham

shburton District is on the cusp of opportunity – but there is every chance it will have to keeping working hard to make the most of its chances.

On the face of it, census figures discussed at a seminar in Ashburton this week suggest the district is riding a wave of growth that could set up a secure future.

The population last year hit 31,000, up 13 per cent on the 2006 census. Indications are that the population will grow to 38,000 by 2031.

That growth has affected the property market. At 12,761 dwellings, Mid Canterbury has 12.5 per cent more homes than it did eight years ago.

Growth-fuelled demand has helped to push the median house sale price to $310,000 from $271,500 last year.

As prices rise, it is heartening to note 66.7 per cent of people aged 15 years and over either owned or partly owned their home. The national average is just 49.8 per cent.

Of course, all this growth is fuelled by something. Our economy continues to grow on the back of graft, innovation and strong markets for what we produce. That meant, at nearly 4800, close to 10 per cent more business locations were recorded.

At 15,700, there was also 17.3 per cent more paid employees in the district. The unemployment rate is 2.9 per cent compared with 7.1 per cent for all of New Zealand, reaffirming the area as having among the best employment rates in the country.

These figures paint a picture of a province in the ascent. That the median income in Ashburton District is $32,900, compared to $28,500 for all of New Zealand, suggests it must be.

Business, government and community groups continue to plan for a district on the rise and many understand the need for our infrastructure, urban areas and social services to meet projected demand.

But in a year the Budget Advice Service warned of a 60 per cent increase in demand; when people complain about access to affordable rentals, and where housing is almost five times the median household income, the numbers suggest we will have to work to ensure growth benefits everyone.

YOUR VIEW Standing for council office The first question any person considering standing for council office would need to consider is: Why would I want to subject myself to insults and innuendo from often uninformed and self serving members of the public for financial recompense which, for the hardest working of our councillors must struggle to equal the minimum wage?

Our local councillors are presumably all honest, sincere, intelligent members of our community, if they are not, then we have no one else to blame but ourselves for having elected them!

The recent meeting at which the bridge issue was aired was a good example of why so few people are prepared to stand for public office.

That those councillors who voted for the motion to continue with placing the bridge aligned with Chalmers Avenue, to be booed and jeered at and otherwise intimidated by the opponents of the motion, reflected badly on the calibre of those people involved, and on the people of Ashburton generally.

As the council’s CEO stated in the Guardian (11/06/14,) some councillors believe they are elected to reflect the collective will of the people, others believe they are elected to use their own judgement.

How any councillor could know what the collective will of the people is eludes me, often single issue groups make their feelings and opinions

That leaves the councillors with only one choice, to use their own judgement.

Conspiracy?

Don McLeod claims no conspiracy (Ashburton Guardian, June 7) [but] I’ve still got my doubts.

Even if there is no conspiracy, Cr McLeod’s [incorrect information] blocked him from voting and resulted in the bridge motion being lost.

Cr McLeod now finds it a problem because he has been misreported by the media.

What you have done, Cr

McLeod, has far more effect on hundreds of people than what the media has done to you, and committed millions of dollars of ratepayers’ money - maybe even much more now that we find that the [New Zealand Transport Agency’s] subsidy might change.

The call is still the same, conspiracy or no conspiracy: you need to do the decent thing and resign.

It all started after the earthquake when we got a shock to discover our boiler house was unrepairable and would have to come down.

At that point the boiler was not overloaded as it only heated four rooms in the school. Being down to earth people, the Ministry of Education decided to get rid of the boiler house and install four heat pumps.

Located on the side of the boiler house was the main meter for the school. We have three other meters, one in the caretaker’s shed (it used to be for the swimming pool pump), one for the dental clinic and one for the hall.

There should have been nothing terminal about this decision, in fact it was just another neutral occurrence at school.

So once the new meter was installed no more than 15m from the site of the old one, we should have been back to conducting the business of education.

Next month the power bill arrived and just to amp up the goodwill that was flowing between the school and this national entity, the account was for approximately 10 per cent of what we would pay normally.

Given this was the middle of winter and now four extra heat pumps were added to the circuit, I was positively charged about the new bill.

During the next four months I watched similar accounts being sent to us. I was tempted to hook up my house supply,

Well nothing changed, in fact just to socket to us that they were so happy with the current mess, they altered the look of the accounts, changed the account numbers and as of last week, we have still not been correctly charged.

Summoning up the energy to confront this, I made one more call to ion this out, and I believe we should finally get a correct account generated for the school one year after I began untangling this auxiliary distraction. If not, I think I will be incandescent and blow my filament.

The story is true and contains at least 40 really bad puns or power terms along with the name of the power company.

Ashburton’s BP 2Go store is trebling in size and is hoping to boost in-store sales as it undergoes a major redevelopment.

The independently owned State Highway 1 store will likely resemble those in its neighbouring major centres Rolleston and Timaru, with store front parking and a greater selection of food and barista coffee.

Owner-operators Rasek and Margaret Ganda were reluctant to reveal the price tag of the “significant investment”, but were impressed with how their new 288 square metre tilt slab building was progressing to-

wards its mid-August deadline.

The store will feature the ‘Hungry As’ food offer, consistent with other 2Go stores which form the independent dealers’ network. That will greatly expand food and drink choices for customers.

“We can’t grow the shop anymore, and there’s a real need there for barista coffee. This will hopefully drive the non-fuel sales which form a big part of the business,” Mrs Ganda said.

With the external and internal walls up and windows installed, the shop is now being wired for electricity and security systems.

Mr Ganda said once construction was completed the current

85 square metre shop would be demolished to make way for store front parking.

Despite a blip in the consenting process, meaning they had to carve two metres off the side of the structure to ensure it did not impede future NZTA road works, Mr Ganda was excited about the development.

It was an idea that has been in the making for at least the past five years, he said.

“We are excited absolutely, it’s been a lot of work to get it to this stage. There’s been three parties involved, being us the landlord and BP, so we have had to co-ordinate everything, but we have enjoyed it.”

House sales volumes fell but prices still rose sharply in the Auckland and Northland regions, the latest Harcourts data showed.

Hayden Duncan, chief executive, released figures showing written sales volumes fell 6.7 per cent from 567 sales in May last year to only 529 sales last month.

But average sale prices shot up $76,911 or 12 per cent, from $619,136 to $696,047. The average price for the past quarter has consistently sat between $695,000 and $697,000 and Har-

courts said the data suggested residential properties were still selling well.

Auctions accounted for 40 per cent of all listings and Harcourts calculated there was only enough property on hand in its northern region to last 3.5 months.

“This statistic highlights how limited the pool of housing is, with well-priced properties sold quickly,” the agency said.

Mr Duncan said Harcourts backed fast-tracked construction of good houses, needed to keep up with the region’s growing population.

“We also remain on the side

of first home buyers, who need more choice and the removal of LVR restrictions to help them achieve the Kiwi dream of home ownership,” he said.

Mark Smith, ANZ senior economist, said in the bank’s latest market focus that Real Estate Institute figures would be out this week too and would also show volume changes.

“We are likely to see a May bounce in sales volumes,” he said, predicting a 7 per cent seasonally adjusted month-onmonth change “but this would still leave volumes down more than 10 per cent on a year ago.”

The May meeting of Hinds WI was held on Wednesday, May 28 at the Ashburton Public Library, commencing at 10.30am with fifteen members attending. Rosa Bennett opened the short meeting with the Aspirations. The roll call – biscuits for 206 club saw a great response of home baking.

The roll call for June – the mini show is tinned food for Ashburton Food Bank Business included reminders for Meals on Wheels on August 15, and floral posies for Ashburton Hospital on July 18.

Members were then given interesting and informative talks and computer presentations on the many services offered by the library, by librarians, Nicky, technical services and Dianne, customer services.

Card-holders can access up to 35 items at any one time. There are 90,000 items in the library and 4500 new items brought each year Cancelled books are sold and some are given to the hospital and rest homes. There are also available DVD’s talking books (tape and CD) audio online, e-Books, internet and Books on Wheels, the latter are delivered fortnightly by Altrusa members to housebound people in town.

Internet is very popular with 2593 local people and visitors using the service last month, with an average time between 25-30 minutes each.

By logging onto the website of the Ashburton District Council newspapers from 1878-1921 can be accessed. In the Newspaper Room microfilm readers display newspaper articles from 1878 to the present day. Also, one can access the local history collections by looking up index cards. There is also a community notice board and a display area for Ashburton Groups to use.

Contest down to grand final

In just over three weeks the winner of this year’s Young Farmer contest will be announced and tickets for events are selling out.

Over a demanding three days Hinds Young Farmers’ member James Davidson, flying the flag for the Aorangi region, will go head-to-head with the six other grand finalists in a number of challenges.

Lincoln University Library will play host to the Official Opening, on Thursday, July 3 at 4.30pm, as the grand finalists come together for the first time.

Then it will be an early night for the competitors with the practical day kicking off at 8am (July 4) at Lincoln University.

Throughout the day contestants will go through a series of practical modules in a test of speed, skill and stamina. They will also give presentations, face interview panels and be tested in human resource challenges.

After the practical day it’s straight to the ANZ Sponsors and Speeches Dinner at Wigram Airforce Museum. Here, contestants will put their rhetoric talents

to the test to deliver a convincing speech to the audience and judges on a topic specific to each of them. The next morning, (July 5), is the AGMARDT agri-business breakfast will be held at Russley Golf Course, featuring high profile speakers John Brackenridge (The New Zealand Merino Company CEO), Calvin Smith (K9 Natural Food CEO), Andy Borland (Scales Corporation managing director), Steve Smith (Craggy Range Vineyards managing director) and AGMARDT chairman Dean Nikora.

The competition concludes with the live-televised evening show held at CBS Arena in Christchurch. The quick-fire quiz round, hosted by Mark Leishman, is the last hurdle contestants must overcome in New Zealand’s ultimate rural challenge. By the end of the evening one will be named the 2014 ANZ Young Farmer Contest Champion.

Once the formalities are over the festivities will carry on into the evening with a black-tie celebratory ball at the Addington Raceway.

DairyNZ again seeks aspiring directors DairyNZ is again seeking aspiring directors who are interested in taking up an opportunity for an associate position on its board.

DairyNZ chairman John Luxton says the two non-voting positions will each serve for six months consecutively.

“We appointed our first two associate directors last year and it’s been a great success. Elaine Cook and Grant Wills were our pioneers and they have proven that it’s a worthwhile experience for those wanting to be directors.

The DairyNZ board has also certainly gained from having fresh voices at the table,” he says.

“I think we have a responsibility to help others get some first-hand knowledge of what it’s like to sit around a board table and see gov-

ernance in action. We need a pipeline of people coming through to serve on boards in our industry, and on other boards too. This is a practical way we can help build people’s confidence and skills by learning from others.”

Anyone interested in applying for the DairyNZ associate director positions should be current dairy farmers, have a proven commitment to governance and aspire to be a leader in the industry.

Forget pies, chips, try cheeses, specialty meats

By James Ihaka Gone are the days of Fieldays visitors being happy with a pie, chips and a hot dog.

These days it’s more about gourmet cheeses, specialty meats, fine wines, cooking demonstrations from a Michelinstarred chef and a decent brew

to wash it all down.

Fieldays started yesterday at Mystery Creek with more than 900 exhibitors on 1380 sites across 50ha, making the four-day farming event the biggest of its type in the Southern Hemisphere.

But despite the event showcasing the latest in farm tech-

nologies and innovations – it’s in the kitchen where things are getting busier.

The Kiwi’s Best Kitchen features celebrity chef Josh Emett who will again demonstrate his cooking prowess to packed audiences.

Among the exhibitors is Good George brewery owner

Jason Macklow who said Kiwis were taking a more discerning approach about their food.

He said the popularity of food exhibitions at Fieldays was likely due to shows such as Masterchef and My Kitchen Rules.

Our April meeting was held at St Paul’s Lounge on the 15th, Mary Simpson presiding.

We had two roll-calls this month - biscuits to be donated to 206 Club and telling of favourite music – were both well supported.

Our speaker for the day was Maxine Hooper, from Senior Citizens, who gave us a very informative talk on all the services available through her organisation.

We were very surprised at the number of services that are offered.

Maxine was thanked for her informative talk, and given a small gift in appreciation.

The raffle was won by Linda Voyce, and the meeting closed after a welcome afternoon tea.

May saw us celebrating our 30th birthday, with a lunch at Bedrock Café in Allenton.

We were joined by Denise Clark from Federation.

After a short meeting which included handing out schedules for Cup Day, and during which we observed a minute’s silence to remember our late member, Bev Cornwall, we enjoyed a lovely meal.

Our birthday cake, which was made by Jeanette van der Nagel, was cut by President Mary Simpson, and Denise Clarke.

A lovely day to celebrate our birthday.

Local division four derby

Mid Canterbury Eastern and Methven square off for the second time this season in Mainland Football’s division four competition on Saturday.

Eastern won the first encounter 2-1, which was only Methven’s second game after an early-season promotion from division five.

Eastern are third on the league ladder, with five wins and three draws from nine games, to be two points adrift of frontrunners FC Twenty11 Thunder Panthers while Methven are on the bottom of the table with just the one win from their eight games.

In their most recent run Methven went down to Western 3-4 after playing 63 minutes with only 10 men after but will like to play as well with the full complement against their local rivals.

Eastern were held to a 0-0 draw with Parklands their second draw in as many games after a 2-2 result with the league leaders.

After back-to-back losses the Mid Canterbury Masters are at home to Waimak Wanderers.

Mid Canterbury 18th are at home to Christchurch Boys’ 2nd XI, 16th are at home to Papanui Redwood, and 15th are also at the Ashburton Domain against Cashmere Technical.

The Mid Canterbury women are leading the way in the district, as they look to maintain top spot in women’s division two away to Halswell United on Sunday, the penultimate game in their league competition.

The New Zealand Indoor Bowls Championships has post-section play in the triples today, following qualifying yesterday in Napier.

So far the nationals have been a case of so near and yet so far for 20-year-old Teri Anderson on Tuesday. While no Ashburton bowlers advanced to the last 32, for the second time in three days she had to settle for the runnerup prize, having lost the singles to Ashley Diamond Canterbury on Sunday and then the pairs to now nine-times national champion Grant L’Ami. Anderson and Joy Archer (Waikato) held a small lead for much of the championship final against L’Ami and Mike Phipps, but conceded two shots on the final end to lose 6-5. L’Ami is now only one win away from becoming the first indoor bowler to gain two gold stars for 10 titles. For Mike Phipps today was his seventh national title.

Celtic’s unbeaten streak in premier netball is at an impressive 20 but standing in the way of their blackjack on Saturday is College A. In blackjack the odds of reaching 21 from 20 are low but the defending premiers have not lost a game of netball since the 2012 final.

College pushed Celtic to within one goal in their first encounter, and with midweek outings in the Supernet secondary schools competition they are a side on the rise, shown in their comprehensive 35-11 win over Hampstead A – a team that had also beaten them by one in the first round.

The 2013 runners-up may be without a win but Methven have steadily improved this season, demonstrated by the 15 goals the clawed back on Celtic (losing by eight last weekend after a 23-goal loss in round one) and will want a similar improvement against United who claimed the win in round one 26-12.

New Zealand’s convincing win on Tuesday night over Scotland did not greatly impress coach Chris Boyd but he admits there will be looming selection headaches ahead of Sunday’s unexpected Junior World Championship semifinal appearance.

The 54-7 victory, the most convincing display of the day in slippery conditions, only rated a “five or six out of 10” for Boyd, given the quality of the opposition and his rotation policy for the match.

“We made 12 changes, so everyone’s had a gallop now and we’ve got a few selection headaches looking ahead to South Africa. We did what we needed to do to win, so I was very pleased with that,” he said. “There’ll be five of six discussions around positional changes. That’s how we like it.”

Renton, who made nine appearances for Otago last season, relished his first start of the Junior World Championship.

“It was good to get the opportunity. I thought the boys got a bit of go-forward, and we looked good when we hung onto the ball,” said Renton.

The Ashburton College girls’ 1st XV chalked up another win without breaking a sweat yesterday as St Kevins defaulted in the Aoraki Secondary Schools Rugby Competition. Ashburton were unbeaten in the first round, which included a 64-7 win over St Kevins, and are now off to a winning start in round two but not in the way they would have wanted.

Spurs take lead Patty Mills and his red-hot San Antonio Spurs have taken the upper hand in the NBA Finals, trouncing the Miami Heat with one of the best shooting displays in playoff history. The Spurs won 11192 on Miami’s home court to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The damage was done in the first two quarters, with the Spurs shooting a playoff-record 75.8 per cent from the floor and taking a 7150 lead into the halftime break.

“I don’t think we will ever shoot 76 per cent in a half ever again,” Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich said.

Wicks to return?

Parramatta are one of a number of NRL clubs who have expressed an interest in signing Danny Wicks for the 2015 season. Wicks is set to return to the rugby league next year, after serving a four-year WADA ban and an 18-month prison sentence for drug supply. The former Newcastle and St George Illawarra forward was released from jail in March, after being found guilty of drug dealing.

On a contract worth around $300,000 a year before his arrest, the 28-year-old is unlikely to command that now.

■ JOKERS HIT THE ROAD

Living to ride Everything about it was perfect.

The weather, the route, the activities along the way and of course the camaraderie of the people involved.

It was the Jokers Social Club Queen’s Birthday ride.

Leaving their clubhouse, the Jokers, who were joined by lots of friends, set off on a tour which took them to Rakaia, up the Rakaia Gorge and back home via Methven.

And of course once back, the Jokers provided the hospitality which they are renowned for.

There were some great bikes to be seen, all sounding incredible and going well.

On any tour much of the talk is about catching up and talking about the vehicles, or in this instance the bikes and trikes.

But there was other discussion going on amongst the Jokers too; its only around five months now until they stage their biennial Ashburton Bike Show, and planning is well under way for this massive internationally-rated event.

hose of us who were fortunate to attend a concert staged by pupils from Janet Glassey’s music school last Saturday night heard some great music performed by the students and some guest artists.

The performers ranged in both age and experience, some have just started their tuition, and others have been performing for a while.

It’s not easy especially for very young people to perform in front of an audience, some for the first time, but none of them seemed nervous and each of them were crowd pleasers.

The concert showcased the value of groups like Janet’s music school, the wonderful contribution which she and those involved in the school are making to the

lives of the pupils and it was a reminder that we have some truly remarkable talent among our young people.

One of the last songs was Mustang Sally, a real top tapper which featured in the soundtrack to the movie The Commitments, released in 1996. The song had been written way back in 1965, when the original Ford Mustang was taking the world by storm.

The lyrics, which include the words Ride Sally Ride, and suggest Sally should slow her Mustang down, also became a newspaper headline when Sally Ride became an astronaut.

There was no slowing the audience down when those talented performers sung that song on Saturday night.

ometimes people ask Roger Hart and I about the procedure for getting our stories into the paper.

For example an oft asked question is do we write them and take them around to the Guardian office, are they handwritten or do we type them?

Well the answer is we use computers and email them.

As most people know electronic mail is marvellous, but it has one downside which is we hardly ever need to go the office, and consequently we don’t catch up with the recipients of our messages in person.

Our contributions go to the sub

editing team, and specifically to Steve Devereux. Recently we did have the pleasure of catching up with Steve in person, not at the office but at a function held to mark a special milestone in his career. Steve has now been at the Guardian for 40 years, serving the paper in a variety of roles.

We think this tremendous achievement will be recorded in print sometime soon so we won’t say too much now, but we do want to acknowledge the wonderful support and encouragement Steve has given his motoring contributors. Of course we have to submit our copy to Steve so it will be

interesting to see if this gets published!

And just a little aside to all of that, Steve told us he finished the school term prior to the May holidays and then started work at the paper.

He can’t recall if he took his books.

So maybe they are still in a desk or locker at Ashburton College!

Oh and that’s right not long before he left school he told a classmate he was heading for a career in the newspaper industry. The other chap followed and is about to clock up 40 years.

They built ‘em tough

T

hese days company cars are common, but that hasn’t always been the case.

This year the Guardian celebrates its 135th birthday, but it didn’t have a company vehicle for about the first 90 years of its life.

And then when it did get one it wasn’t a car - no, it was a motor scooter. That scooter served well both during work hours - and sometimes after hours. Of course those who tested it on a rather unique obstacle course, which included among other things a roof-top ramp, say it was all done in the interests of proving its safety and reliability.

Somehow the scooter and the daredevils involved including the two currently longest serving staff members survived.

That scooter was a Benelli, made by an Italian company founded by Teresa Benelli in 1911. She was a widow who invested most of the family finances in the firm as a way of providing work for her children.

During its history the company produced a range of bikes raced successfully by well known riders.

As proved right here in Ashburton, they were sturdy machines.

Pickles, the dog, finds stolen cup

A

mongrel dog named Pickles found it. But the Nazis couldn’t.

Thieves have got their hands on it. But Australians haven’t touched it.

It’s considered priceless. But you can get a knock-off mini version for a few bucks.

It’s the most coveted trophy in sport: the Jules Rimet Trophy, for winning the World Cup. So just how did Pickles the dog sniff it out?

Blame the Poms. They lost it, before they won it, in 1966.

The solid gold trophy was stolen in London while on a pretournament exhibition.

A week after the theft, a geezer called Dave Corbett was walking Pickles in south-east London when the mutt sniffed a garden hedge.

Inside the hedge was something wrapped in newspaper: the Jules Rimet Trophy - named after FIFA’s longest-serving president, the Frenchman who initiated the first World Cup. The dog’s owner was given a 5000 pound reward - five times as much as the England players got for winning the trophy - and Pickles instantly became a national hero.

He dined out on his fame, was given a year’s supply of treats from a pet food company.

But the next year, he died: chasing a cat, Pickles’ lead got caught in a fallen tree branch and he choked.

Brazil, who held the trophy before the Poms won it in 1966, thought the incident laughable not the dog’s death, the fact the

“This shameful theft would never have happened in Brazil. Even Brazilian thieves love football and would never have committed such a sacrilegious crime,” thundered Brazilian Sports Confederation official Abrain Tebel.

But karma came knocking in 1983 when thieves stole the trophy from Brazil’s possession.

Brazil had earnt keeper’s rights: FIFA decreed the first nation to win the trophy three times, could keep it forever.

Italy won it in 1934 and again in 1938.

And to ensure its safe-keeping as the Nazis tore through Europe, Italian sports official Ottorino Barassi took it from a Rome bank vault and hid it in a box under his bed until the end of the war.

FIFA has - justifiably, given the history - become super-protective of the trophy.

Brazil hope first-game referee is no omen

By Andy Scott Brazil will be handed an unwelcome reminder of the manner in which their 2010 World Cup bid ended by the presence of Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura in the opening game of this year’s finals against Croatia.

Nishimura was the man in the middle when Brazil lost 2-1 to the Netherlands in the quarterfinals in 2010 in Port Elizabeth, and this week FIFA announced that he will take charge of the Group A opener at the Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo.

Midfielder Ramires, now 27, is one of the few members of this year’s Brazil squad to have featured in 2010, although he was forced to watch the Dutch debacle from the sidelines due to suspension.

“Back then I was the youngest player in the squad at my first World Cup, surrounded by more experienced players,” said the Chelsea star. “Everything was wonderful, but then I got a second yellow card (in the last 16 against Chile) that ruled me out of the game against the Netherlands. The team played very well

in the first half of that game,” admitted Ramires, who saw Robinho give Brazil a 1-0 halftime lead.

However, a second-half Wesley Sneijder brace turned the game around before Felipe Melo’s sending-off ended the fivetime world champions’ hopes.

Seeing Nishimura in charge against Croatia will give many Brazilians bad memories, but Ramires had a simple message for his compatriots as tension grows ahead of the big kick-off.

“All sorts of things can happen in 90 minutes. Sometimes

referees can make mistakes so it is up to us to do our best to overcome anything that goes against us,” he said.

Under Luiz Felipe Scolari, the current Brazil side are practically unrecognisable from that which faced the Netherlands four years ago, with goalkeeper Julio Cesar and right-back Dani Alves the only members of that team who are likely to line-up against Croatia.

Nevertheless, the current squad has experience of winning last year’s Confederations Cup and they can call on a back-

room staff featuring Scolari, the coach of the 2002 World Cup-winning side, and technical co-ordinator Carlos Alberto Parreira, who coached Brazil to glory in 1994.

Ramires added: “There are no comparisons between the team of 2010 and today. We are talking about two excellent sides, but we can’t say that this squad is better.

“We have a very young squad but we have an experienced coaching staff. They know about all the difficulties we might face along the way.”

Club news 22 Ashburton Guardian Ashburton Ladies Probus Club The May meeting of the Ashburton Ladies Probus Club was held in the Doris Linton Lounge, with a good attendance of members.

The national Anthem was sung, and apologies accepted.

Several members celebrated birthdays this month.

Our mini speaker was Fairlie Matsinger who spoke of her life.

After morning tea, our speaker, Rebecca O’Callaghan,Continence Nurse at the hospital, spoke about her speciality. This was very informative and at times amusing. She was thanked and given a fruit tray. After the meeting, 16 ladies had lunch at The Stables On Tuesday 17th June, we have a mystery trip. Meet at the RSA car park at 11.30am.

Ashburton Musical Club Musical Moments was the theme of the June meeting and brought a large turnout of members on a chilly, wet day to enjoy and support the performers. Vice President Ted Wood welcomed everyone and thanked Margaret and June for putting the programme together. The large floral arrangement gracing the stage was beautifully created by Michelle Rumping.

First performer to take the stage was Hamish Sloper, suitably attired in traditional Highland attire who set the scene with a toe-tapping medley of bagpipe music.

Violinists Charlotte Sloper, Elise Ford and Mae Patterson then presented an accomplished range of solo and duet items from the classical repertoire of Bach, Becker and Kuechler and were followed by pianist Lydia Ford who played Gershwin’s Prelude No.3.

Thursday, June 12, 2014 lovely soprano voice of Angela Petrus who sang an unaccompanied trio of traditional British and Irish folk songs after which she was joined by her husband Michael as they sang the haunting Anima Christe in Latin.

We welcomed a newcomer to the Musical Club, Zoe Scott who travelled up from Geraldine to entertain us with the first of her two brackets of modern songs holding the audience spellbound with her heartfelt understanding of the lyrics she was singing.

A change of scene then brought Darfield’s Saba Charles to the stage with two contrasting piano solos of Schumann and New Zealand composer Douglas Lilburn. Saba was followed by Peter Rumping who charmed us with two solos in lighter vein, Moon River and Memory after which Michael Petrus returned with his own arrangement of Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent and own composition ‘Angel’ self accompanied on Spanish guitar.

An ensemble from the John Waugh Group put us all in Celtic mood with a selection of items from the Shetland Isles, Argyle and Northumberland and in their second bracket taking us on a journey with the Arran Boat Song, to Ireland and the Road to Leeston.

Local lass Olivia Pike delighted us with her piano renditions of Debussy’s Dr. Gradus Parnassum and The Little Shepherd bringing a magical afternoon of beautiful music to a happy conclusion.

The accompanists were Deborah Sloper and Graham Gunn.

The Vice President thanked all the performers.

The next meeting will be held at The Sinclair Centre on Sunday July 13 at 2pm.

The programme will be entitled ‘Patchwork’ arranged by Carolie Andrews.

Ashburton Savage Club The second korero (concert) was held

A very good programme had been arranged by Great Chief John, but unfortunately, winter ills and a very wet, cold evening, meant our numbers were slightly reduced.

The evening commenced with a gettogether at 7.00pm., followed by the programme at 7.30pm.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation to Past Chief Russell Anstiss, of his 50 year service award, by Tohunga Ray Mitchell. Members saluted Russell with a rousing “Ake”.

It was pleasing to welcome a number of visitors & also our guest artist, Manny Sim. After the formalities, the singing of our Opening Ode, National Anthem & March-in, the following items were presented.

Ashburton Senior Citizens The monthly Social Afternoon was held on Tuesday 9th June 2014 at the Seniors Centre. Hope played a pleasing selection on the piano to welcome the audience as they were being seated. Arthur Berry welcomed the audience and thanked Hope for her entertainment. He then told one of his famous jokes and led the singing of “Happy Birthday”.

Yvonne then greeted everyone and spoke on the forthcoming mid-winter dinner to be held on the 17th July at Speight’s Ale House, cost $16. Yvonne introduced Irene Williams and her piano

accordion. She played a lovely selection of tunes.

Jim Burgess told an amusing joke and then sang “Blue Birds over the White Cliffs of Dover”, followed with “When they sound the last all clear”, “Get out those old records”. Yvonne played on her keyboard “A walk in the Black Forest”, followed by Arthur who told more amusing jokes and sang “Tenderly he watches over me”. Irene played “Two loves”.

Raffles were drawn. A sing-a-long conducted by Jim and Arthur, starting with the “Tennessee Waltz”, “Beautiful Brown Eyes”, “When the Irish eyes are smiling”, “Happy Wonderer”, “Baby Face” and ending with “Now is the hour”.

Ashburton Writers’ Group The June meeting of the Ashburton Writers’ Group was held recently. Marion had sent a quotation – “One small step for man, and a giant leap for mankind” by Neil Armstrong.

Short Story And Poetry Contest: Rae gave a report on the Short Story and Poetry Contest, e-mails had been sent to schools.

The Assignment for the meeting was to use the cliché “keep your fingers crossed”. Members wrote of crushed medication, singing audition, auction – grandfather clock, winters day, Dad’s clichés, President Julie, phone help.

The instant exercise was to write about a water melon. Members wrote of hard shell, childhood favourite, hungry man, cold liquid, supermarket and runaway soccer balls.

The meeting concluded at 2.50pm with the serving of afternoon tea.

At the next meeting the short stories and poems sent by children will be judged.

Tuesday night continues to gain in popularity with 30 shooters taking part, Alden Thomas scored well and will be pressured to graduate to Monday night.

Matt Batty also shot well while Lanelle McArthur and Megan Snowden proved that the club is in a strong position with up-coming juniors.

The Otago Racing Club (ORC) has made a significant contribution to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

Their Think Pink Raceday on Queen’s Birthday raised nearly $7000 through numerous on-course activities with the principal earner being the ABC Business Sales Charity Rider Oaks.

“The success of the day was made mostly possible by the outstanding efforts of the riders who lined up in the Charity Riders Race, which took place at the end of what had been a thoroughly enjoyable race day,” ORC secretary Andre Klein said.

“The contestants in this initiative raised over $3500 - a fine effort by each and every one of them. This amount was topped up by people placing bets on the equalisator tote that we ran on the race.”

Other activities on-course included an auction, a raffle, the sale of NZBCF merchandise and also a fund-raising cocktail function branded Tickled Pink.

“We had around 150 guests in at The Tickled Pink Function. The feedback from the event has been really very positive. It is certainly a hospitality option we look forward to hosting again next year.”

Weather wipes Avondale The wild weather that hit Auckland Tuesday night forced the cancellation of the Avondale meeting yesterday.

High winds and heavy rain caused extensive damage to the stabling area and part of the roof of the main stable block was torn off, along with fallen trees and extensive debris.

Alker enjoying renewed run

By Daniel RichaRDson Sandy, Utah. Population: 89,344. It’s the sixth-largest city in Utah, counts 18 per cent of its residents as accountants or auditors and it was also the birthplace of professional wrestler Jim Fullington, better known by his ring name The Sandman who had a notable run during the glory years of the now-defunct ECW. But Sandy is also the place where Hamilton’s Steven Alker gave his golf career a second chance.

Between 2010-2012 the Phoenixbased professional made only 11 cuts from 56 events on the second-tier Web. com Tour and held very limited status as he eyed the 2013 season.

Alker staggered through the beginning of last year, although he did make a surprise appearance at the US Open where he finished in a share of 45th after coming through sectional qualifying to get a start.

But when Alker arrived in Sandy last July for the Utah Championship at the Willow Creek Country Club, something clicked.

“It was just kind of my week,” Alker recalled.

He was right too. Spurred by a 10-under 61 in the third round, Alker powered his way to victory in a playoff over Australian Ashley Hall as he picked up his first win in more than four years.

“It’s a fine line between playing well and playing really well,” Alker said. “At the time I was putting the ball well and wasn’t quite getting the ball in the hole and it was frustrating. But I knew I had to hang in there, keep working on my putting, stay patient and I just started rolling a few putts in.”

“Having the win in Utah just sparked me a little bit,” Alker said. “I was still working hard with the game and you’re out there trying to win but that sparked me to think ‘I’ve still got it, it’s still there; I still know how to win’.”

Alker backed up that thinking when he slogged through a Web.com Tour-record 11-hole playoff to beat Dawie van der Walt to win the Cleveland Open on Monday.

The victory saw Alker jump from 102nd on the tour’s order of merit to 12th and if he can finish this year inside the top 25 he will book his ticket back to the show for next season.

“It’s pleasing to get another win that quickly on this tour because it’s pretty tough to win,” Alker said. “The scores are low, it’s competitive, there’s a lot of young guys out there.”

The 42-year-old has worked hard on his fitness during the past year, seeking out a couple of people in Los Angeles to help with his mobility.

He also has a start in today’s US Open at Pinehurst in North Carolina after coming through sectional qualifying in

Jesse Ryder has claimed 10 wickets in a match for the first time in his career, dominating at the bowling crease in English country cricket.

Ryder would have been recruited by Essex for his abilities with the bat but he proved equally proficient with the ball in their draw with Kent this week.

After claiming 5-54 in his side’s first innings in the field, Ryder followed that impressive haul with a second five-wicket bag, picking up 5-56 as the match petered out to a draw on Tuesday night (NZT).

The result saw Essex move to third in the division two table and saw Ryder record new best figures for a first class innings and match (10-110), more than making up for a cheap dismissal with the bat.

Ryder had already shown his wares at the bowling crease since heading to Essex for the winter, taking 10 wickets in seven matches since joining the province. The 29-year-old quickly doubled that tally, pressing his case as a genuine all-rounder.

The last time a Kiwi came through qualifying to play the US Open at the Pinehurst Resort, it ended with Michael Campbell claiming the 2005 title.

Alker, who only played Pinehurst No 2 for the first time this week during his practice rounds, didn’t want to make any bold predictions about history repeating.

“Stranger things have happened but I’m just going to go up there this week and play,” Alker said.

“Obviously a US Open’s a good test, you’ve got to drive the ball on the fairway, no matter what course it is and have your short game going.”

After this week, Alker will play Web. com Tour tournaments in Kansas and Indiana before taking a week off ahead of defending his Utah Championship crown next month at Willow Creek.

“It’s always good when you come back as defending champion and it’s my type of course too. It’s an old-style, tree-lined, pretty tight course and that’s probably the reason why I did so well last year.”

Sandy might not be Utah’s most glamorous city but it will have one willing visitor in July.

Sport Roly chasing tour spot

Hayden Roulston will look to make a big push for a Tour de France berth in the Critérium du Dauphiné this week.

Defending Tour De France champion, Chris Froome, leads the field heading to the mid-way point in the eight-day eight-stage race with Roulston doing the hard yards for his team to be 134th.

In yesterday morning’s (NZ time) third stage a large pile up with 65km to go had Trek’s Giacomo Nizzolo go down and he has since withdrawn from the race.

Trek’s Haimar Zubeldia is the team’s top rider on the general classification and if Roulston can put in some strong rides to keep him there, or help another rider rise up the rankings, he could be in line for a seat on the biggest tour on the calendar.

The current New Zealand road champion is hoping to gain selection for the first time since riding in 2009.

The tour gets under way on July 5 and runs through until July 27, and either way he has the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow at the end of July - with the road race on August 3.

Carter returns for Southbridge

Dan Carter’s long awaited return to rugby on Saturday could be short-lived.

Carter will pull on the blue and white stripes of his beloved Southbridge club this weekend when Southbridge takes on Glenmark in the play-offs of the Combined Country Cup, but doubts he’ll play the full 80 minutes.

He reckons 40 minutes might be enough as he looks to ease

back into the game, particularly given it’s likely to be a heavy and wet track, but he’s still eyeing a return to the Crusaders’ side following the June international window.

Carter said he would train with Southbridge tonight but would not take to the field as a superstar of the game on Saturday – when he plays for Southbridge he’s just one of the team.

He’s only just started back contact training in the past two weeks but said his body was feeling fine, with no trace of the

ankle injury which saw him hobble off the field during his 100th appearance for the All Blacks in November, the last time he played the game which made him a household name.

During his sabbatical he travelled and spent time with his family, and for the past couple of months he’s been doing some “pretty high intensity” training.

“For the past few weeks I’ve been itching to get back. I’m at the stage now that I’m just ready to play, and that’s exciting,” he said.

His months off had allowed him to work on his body and do a lot of rehabilitation, including from the ankle injury which required surgery.

Carter watched the first England match on television and will do the same again for the Dunedin match.

“When you do watch them play and do the haka and the national anthem there’s a big part of you that wants to be out there playing and I really felt that on Saturday, which is great.”

on Southbridge’s clash against Glenmark. Southbridge’s loss to Lincoln in last weekend’s quarter-finals means it’s not the semi-final he was hoping it might be, but he’s still expecting a tough match against a proud club like Glenmark.

Had Southbridge won its quarter-final it would have meant Rakaia would have been facing Carter in this weekend’s semi-finals.

Instead, Rakaia plays Lincoln in one semi, and Methven plays Waihora in the other.
