The tasty tamarillo

Dorothy Knight is this month’s winner with the following question: I have a tamarillo plant growing in a pot. The plant is growing well, but needs repotting very soon. At this stage it is growing in a warm house in a glass enclosure. Can tamarillos be grown outside in Mid Canterbury, Rakaia? When is the best time to repot? Cultivating a tamarillo successfully in Ashburton will require the plant to be inside a glasshouse during the winter months as they are frost-tender. Repot the plant in late winter/early spring, just before the tamarillo bursts into new growth. Plant into the biggest pot or planter you can find to encourage an extensive root system. As tamarillos tend to grow quite tall on a single stem, you may need to cut the stem at around 1 metre to encourage a more branching habit. Remember, tamarillos are not the easiest of fruits to grow and can be very susceptible to some nasty mildews during the summer months. Repot with fresh container mix and fertilise lightly with a fruit fertiliser at 4-6-week intervals from spring into early summer. Keep the plant moist but do not over water as tamarillos do not like wet feet.
