Field Trips, ASEH 2014 Conference Our conference will offer opportunities to see many of the city’s iconic sites: the Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown, Golden Gate Park, cable car runs, and more. The city, located on a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, is very compact and walkable - and the conference hotel, the Wyndham Parc 55, is located in the heart of downtown next to a station for Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). Conference attendees can explore the city on their own or sign up for a field trip.

Muir Woods National Monument/Redwoods Leaders: ?? Description: Attendees will learn about the history of this national monument, established in 1908, and will have the opportunity to walk through the old-growth coastal redwood forest. California redwoods are known for their height – and the tallest tree in Muir Woods measures 258 feet. The average age of the redwoods in the Monument is 500 – 800 years old, with the oldest being more than 1,000 years old.

Toxic Tour of Hunter’s Point: Past and Future Leader: Christie Getz Description: One of the most economically disadvantaged areas of San Francisco, Hunter’s Point was the site of a shipyard and other polluting industries – and nearby residents have suffered high rates of asthma and other respiratory diseases. This field trip will discuss historical land and water uses, local industries, community activism, and clean-up efforts.

Bay Model Leader: Marty Reuss (?) Description: Operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers, The Bay Model provides scientists, educators, and citizens interested in San Francisco Bay a unique opportunity to view the complete bay-delta system at a glance.

Colma Leader: ?? Description: Colma presents a fascinating opportunity to examine a system of urban cemeteries. As a densely populated city, San Francisco does not allow interments within the city limits, relying on the Town of Colma for its cemeteries. This field trip will explore several sites at Colma, discussing land use trends, historical settlement and migration patterns, cultural diversity, attitudes toward the dead, and more.
