Diamond Shaped Torch

)

Used since historic times, the diamond rune symbolizes Clarity, Wisdom & the Creation of Life. Celebrating another birth of the ASEAN Games in Victoria, athletes will bring in more wisdom this year striving towards a common goal – clarity of the mind and soul in every game. The gold, yellow, orange and red colour tones depicts the burning flames of the spirit and passion in sportsmanship. Holding the flames together is a teal and blue coloured torch base representing calmness and trust.

Since the birth of mankind, we have since looked to the skies and adored all things that take flight. From ancient mythology to modern space era, mankind have desired to sense the infinity of the cosmos. The expanded wings represents Ascension in our willingness to go further and higher in life, Liberation in achieving your aspirations and to give Protection in everything we do and love.

i everyone! Since April 2015, the committee has been working hard to make the event a success, and although we faced so many challenges, I’m proud to announce that ASEAN Games Australia has over 1300 participants, and we have successfully launched our first e-Sports division. To Denyse, Yue Han, and Krystle, it has been a good 6 months closely working with all of you. Organizing an event in this scale has no doubt been really challenging. Challenges and problems came into our way day after day, and it pushed our limits in so many different ways. It can even get overwhelming for some of us from time to time, but in the end, we supported each other, we pushed it through, we

survived, and we pulled it off (trust me, it felt like a miracle that we survived, but somehow, we did). At the start of the project, I’ve never thought that we will be able to achieve so much, but here we are, doing our very best to make ASEAN Games Australia bigger than it has ever been. I’m glad that we are able to bring ASEAN Games Australia to new heights, and I hope that this event will continue to grow in the future. To all the committee members, I would like to thank you for spending countless hours to ensure the success of this event. Being part of the committee has definitely been a life changing for me, and looking at the scale of the event and all the records that we have broken, I feel that our efforts for the past 6 month have paid off. I’ve learnt a lot from this event, and I hope that

it was a good experience for you too. After months of hard work, ASEAN Games Australia is finally happening. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors, especially PappaRich for supporting us and making this possible. A shout out to our volunteers, thanks for helping out in the games, and we hope you have a good time. Last but not least, to the participants, thanks for joining us, and we hope that you will have a great experience in our games. Let’s make this happen.

Sports, bring people together. Alongside with the founding principles – People. Passion. Performance, we at ASEAN Games Australia believe in the significance in celebrating the differences and bridging the cultural gap amongst the ASEAN community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate everyone involved in the ASEAN Games Australia, it is truly heartwarming to see people coming together to make this meaningful event happen. Happy 5 year old AGA!

A Message from

Past Project Director

If you told me back in 2013 that a future committee of ASEAN Games Australia would’ve outperformed our currently committee completely, I wouldn’t had believed it. Do slightly better? Perhaps. Bring it up two levels? Nah, not within the next 5 years. Having being involved with AGA since its inception in 2011 with a break in 2014, I’ll be happy to eat my own words. AGA was founded in 2011 with the aim of uniting the ASEAN community in Australia. This is extremely prevalent this year with not only record breaking participation levels, but also record breaking diversity and engagement from the varying ASEAN nations. This is definitely the way forward and I hope that it’ll be carried forward in the future. To the committee of AGA15, continue pushing on and make your mark in AGA history! To future AGAnians, keep pushing forward and outperform us! Lastly, to all the returning athletes, volunteers, partners and anyone involved, thank you for the continuous support in AGA! And to those whom would be joining AGA’15 for the first time, welcome to our family!

2014 Sheh Tyne )

ASEAN Games Australia is comprised of participants with amazing diversity, as well as volunteers that assist to maintain a professional and friendly sporting environment. This annual sporting event had become the platform on which people from our region who share the same drive to excel in sports are brought together. It’s always heartening to see all the faces full of excitement, eagerness, burning desire and spirit amongst the ASEAN community in pursuit of sporting excellence. Strategy, accuracy, precision and speed are some of the few things sports players need. There are heart-stopping moments and a fantastic display of sportsmanship – these are what make the ASEAN Games Australia a memorable one for many. ASEAN Games Australia 2014 concluded successfully last year after two action-packed and exhilarating three days with the tagline “Embrace Diversity, Celebrate Victory”. The Games is a blessed occasion where we achieve excellence in sports and celebrate our differences and similarities as we bridge the cultural gaps between the ASEAN communities in Australia. Project Director

Message

Hello everyone!

I

t is my privilege to introduce to you the 2015 ASEAN Games Australia (AGA). This year, the Games has undergone a pretty massive revamp and now it not only features 8 sports: Badminton, Basketball, Futsal, Netball, Ultimate Frisbee, Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball but we also have a whole new category, e-Sports, which comprises of: DOTA2, LoL, CS:GO as well as FIFA15.

: Denyse H’ ng Project Director ASEAN Games Australia 2015

The schedule of the Games is also different, and is now held over two weekends as we seek to accommodate both categories. e-Sports is a very exciting addition for us and we believe that it will add much value to ASEAN Games Australia. The decision to include the e-Sports category was made due to the growing popularity of online gaming among the ASEAN community. Like Sports, e-Sports’ athletes are intensely passionate about their sport and thus makes for a great platform to forge new friendships and strengthen old bonds.

For 2015, our dream and our mission is to bring before you an AGA unlike any other, a Game that will not only exceed the scale of all previous Games but will also be one that will always be remembered for the quality of the tournaments, the fun-filled days and the invaluable friendships forged. We want you to walk away richer from the experience. As the driving motivation of the Games has always been about uniting the ASEAN community in Australia; we have partnered with the ASEAN student councils across Australia, most notably with Thai Students Association of Victoria (TSV), Cambodians of Victoria (COV), Malaysians Student Council of Australia (MASCA), Filippino Australian Students Council (FASTCO), Melbourne Overseas Vietnamese Student Association Inc (MOVSA), Perhimpunan Pelajar Indonesia Australia (PPIA) and Council of International Students Australia (CISA) in Victoria. We have also kept in touch with the ASEAN community via the assistance of our amazing press partners, Melv, Buset, Bulletin, etc as well as SBS Radio Vietnam and 3ZZZFM. On

that note, we would also like to thank our press partners as well as the community associations that have welcomed us with open arms and assisted in spreading the word about the Games. You have been invaluable -thank you for the all the opportunities you have extended to us. Both myself as well as the AGA committee would also like to thank our wonderful sponsors, particularly (Platinum and Gold sponsors also MOL, CoM and also AUS), for their incredible generosity and the assistance they provided throughout the planning and preparation stages of the Games. I would also like to personally thank the committee members for all they have put into this year’s Games. It was truly amazing to have been able to witness the unbelievable amount of dedication each and every one of you have to this project. Congratulations guys, this Games truly is the product of all your effort! Finally all of us here on the AGA committee would like to thank all our participants for their support of this year’s AGA. We are so grateful for the overwhelmingly positive response we have received from you! We hope that you have a truly wonderful Games and that you make the most of it! Have fun, all the best and GET YOUR GAME ON! ASEAN Games Australia 2015 | 8

F

irst and foremost, I would like to welcome you to ASEAN Games Australia 2015. Thank you for your kind participation in our event and we are really appreciative of the support we have been receiving for the past couple of months. I’m pretty sure Denyse, Yue Han and Su Wee has been flooding their speeches with appreciation and gratitude towards your participation, our sponsors and all the student bodies affliated in ASEAN Games Australia so let me share my personal AGA story instead. Being a part of this prestigious sports tournament has been an eye opener for me. If you have been in Melbourne for some time, you would know that this is the fifth ASEAN Games Australia since our founding mates created this event in 2011. Organising an event that has been around for half a decade is challenging as we had to make the event more interesting than it was before to attract the public’s attention again. It wasn’t as easy as I thought being a part of the ExCo. From the planning stages like rebranding of AGA to the later stages like approaching the public to pariticpate, trust me, there were times when

I ask myself can I really pull this through? If you get to read until this part of my message, it means yes I’ve made it, We’ve made it, AGA 2015 have finally made it! I would like to take this opportunity to specailly thank Yue Han, Su Wee, Denyse, my AGA All Stars family, my family & friends, my dogs and...(hah jokes).

: Yue Han CHUNG CO - Project Director

It’s been one hell of a ride thus far but I’m glad that we’ve reached this stage of the event already. We at AGA dedicate ourselves to make the Games this year the best it could be, and I hope everyone would feel so too. At this point, we’ve broken numerous records and I hope it would set us up at a favourable position for years to come.

ASEAN Games Australia 2015

Keeping it short and sweet, I hope you have a good time during the tournament! Well, it’s not only about the winning but also the experiences you’ve gained, the friends you’ve met and also the memories you’ve created. So see you during the tournament days and Get Your Game On! p/s: can someone tell me I’m not dreaming? :p

None of these could have happened without working alongside with my awesome bunch of committee, and I am really proud to say there is no committee board out there quite like my bunch of people. Everyone is so dedicated in achieving on behalf of AGA and I really must say, everyone has exceeded my expectations (and it’s not because I have low expectations, trust me!). As part of this journey, there were some good times and bad times. We cracked our heads to problems come. We cheered like mad men when our participation soared (I swear, Su Wee shed tears of joy!). All these will definitely form a big part of my memories when I look back next time. All in all, I really thank everyone, be it the sponsors, participants, committees or volunteers, for making this happen. Enjoy the Games! ASEAN Games Australia 2015 | 9

Basketball Did you know?

B

asketball was originally played with a soccer ball. The first balls made specifically for basketball were brown. Dribbling was not part of the original game except for the “bounce pass” to teammates. Passing the ball was the primary means of ball movement. Dribbling was eventually introduced but limited by the asymmetric shape of early balls. It only became a major part of the game around the 1950s, as manufacturing improved the ball shape. The original basketball basket was closed at the bottom; a ladder was needed to recover the ball. The first “hoops” were actually just peach baskets and the first backboards were made of wire.

I’ve played basketball for five years and it’s by far my most favourite sport to play. I love it because of the fast paced nature of the game. As you step on the court, there isn’t one moment that you are bored. Every second that clock ticks, you are on your feet giving it your all, no one is waiting, no one is left out as you move together as a unit as fast as you can to defend or attack.

Volleyball

Don’t think about what can happen in a month or a year. Instead, focus on the 24 hours in front of you and do what you can to get closer to where you want to be. That’s how we roll in volleyball!

Do you know that volleyball has their own lingo? Hold:

When the ball settles in the hands before the player releases it. Spike: An over-arm move where the offensive player “smashes” the ball over the net. Facial: A spike that hits the opponent straight in the face. (Ouch!) Block: Jumping at the net with arms out to stop the opposition from spiking the ball. Dig: A “passing” move where a player puts together both arms in order to bounce a hard-driven ball into the air. An offensive spike usually follows this move. Pepper: A practice drill where players hit a ball back and forth without a net. Kong: Named after King Kong’s style of swatting planes, this is simply a one-handed block.

& are you aware that you jump about 300 times in every match you play?

Tennis is an addiction that once it has truly hooked a man will not let him go. I’ve learned that the ideal attitude to have on court is to be physically loose and mentally tight because what matters most is how well you play when you’re playing badly. We’ll hear a lot of applause in our lives, but none will mean more to us than that applause from our peers during matches. Managing e-Sports Director e-Sports isn’t a real sport. There just isn’t enough people in Australia who plays e-Sports. It’s going to be impossible.” Two years ago, these were the words that were used to describe the introduction of e-Sports. Fast-forward to today, I’m proud to say that the e-Sports component of AGA2015 is set to be amongst the largest non-BYOC LAN tournament in Australia with over 400 participants. This is directly attributed to the hard work of all our e-Sports directors as well as the 2015 committee as a whole. I’m also extremely thankful to our co-organizer, MOL Australia for supporting us. However, the biggest thanks goes to the fans and participants out there! Thank you for the overwhelming support in making this a reality and elevating the standard of E-Sports in Australia! I have played Dota for six years now. I knew nothing about the game when I started in 2005. I stopped playing in college, but fell in love with Dota 2 again in 2012. However, this time I see that there’s more to it. I daresay that this game changed my life, and that’s how much I love Dota!

T

his year’s world tournament for Dota 2, The International, collected a crowdfunded prize pool of $18,000,000. In perspective, NBA (basketball) Playoffs had a purse of $14 million, and $10 mil for both Wimbledon (tennis) Singles and The Masters (golf). The winner this year was Evil Geniuses from USA, winning $6mil from the pool. One of the players was a 16 year old!

Fun facts? When was the first beta of “Counter-Strike” released? On June 19, 1999 “Counter-Strike” beta 1 was available for free download off the Planet Half-Life website. At this time, nobody could have known how popular the game would become.

The M4A1 can be fitted with a silencer, turning it into a silenced, 30 round clip killer.

ASEAN Games Australia 2015

In your first round in any game, how many weapons, before buying, do you start with?

Playing CS a lot myself, I really enjoy being able to play a game that has such an amazing community and is also so fast-paced. I would like however, to see more diversity in the pro scene as it seems to be European dominated at the moment, and I think LANs like this really allow for teams to not only see how they measure up against others but is also a good starting point for those who are thinking of getting serious. Think smart, play smart and call smart. May the best team DOMINATE.

League of Legends is more than just a game - it’s about achieving a common goal with 4 other people from all walks of life. You learn a lot about yourself and how you handle difficult situations. Anything and everything is thrown at you while you’re playing and it is up to you to keep it all under control so you can win. Things get tough but when it’s all over, there’s a sense of satisfaction and achievement you’re left with - that is why I love playing League. : Sylvester Beaumont League of Legends Director ASEAN Games Australia 2015

ere’s why, them clever goalkeepers. FIFA 15 features the most advanced goalkeepers yet. Better AI means that your number one will assess the situation before coming out of his box, and react intelligently depending on the threat. FIFA15 is like virtual reality for football/soccer lovers. It’s something thats been around for almost two decades now. Personally, I have collected every FIFA editions from FIFA98. Even professional players play it for leisure or during the times they are injured. If you are fan of the sport, you will have to be playing it or played it before. The game have became so realistic, to actually master it you will need football knowledge.

Mr Loys Puff is inspired by the idea of authentic, good and affordable Singaporean food. The first Mr Loys Puff outlet was established in Melbourne – Australia in April 2014. Today the restaurant is synonymous with its signature curry puff and chicken rice through word of mouth and branding. Our hand folded curry puffs has one-sixth of a boiled egg, chunky succulent tender chicken pieces, diced potatoes. The curry puffs are encased in a flakey delicious pastry which becomes crunchy when cooked. Delicious aromatic “rempah” spice paste settles in when you take that first bite.
