Back From Mars

I’ve recently returned from Mars I went for several years. I rode Martian motorcars, bought Martian souvenirs.

I went to Martian movies and saw Martian movie stars, attended Martian concerts and heard Martians play guitars.

I ate in Martian restaurants and went to Martian schools. I played on Martian tennis courts and swam in Martian pools.

I hung around with Martian girls and talked to Martian boys. I went to Martian shopping malls and played with Martian toys.

At last I’m back on planet Earth from out among the stars. So why does everyone I see here act like they’re from Mars? Find three fun facts about Mars and present them in class or in groups. STARTING POINT

May the Force

Be with You “May the Force be with you,” says hero Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back, one of the epic Star Wars movies. In a galaxy far, far away Luke and his friends, Han Solo, Princess Leia and the other rebels, are fighting Darth Vader and the evil Empire. The rebels use the Force to bring peace and harmony. Their enemies on the dark side use the Force to gain power and bring destruction. At the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back, Luke Skywalker is on the ice planet Hoth, where the rebels have their base. While Luke is out on a mission, an ice creature called a Wampa captures him. Luke uses his lightsaber to escape from the Wampa’s cave. Then he almost freezes to death in the ice and snow. Han Solo finds Luke and they are rescued. Later, giant Imperial Walkers sent by Darth Vader Vurderingseksemplar attack the rebels. In the snow battle that follows, Luke takes down a Walker, but he and his friends are defeated. The scenes from the ice planet Hoth were filmed on location at Finse, Norway and nearby Hardangerjøkulen glacier in March 1979. The film crew and actors stayed at the hotel Finse 1222. People and equipment were transported in and out of the mountains on the Oslo-Bergen train. In clear weather the glacier was perfect for the icy planet

Hoth, but the weather forces were against the film crew.

There was a blizzard while they were there, and temperatures were freezing. Some days they could not leave the hotel.

The scene where Luke escapes from the Wampa was shot

by filming him running into the snow outside the hotel’s back door. The crew stayed warm inside. Harrison Ford, who played Han Solo, said that being at Finse “was another one of those bizarre experiences in life”. The Force has stayed with Star Wars for over forty years now. These films are some of the most popular science fiction movies about space ever created.

The Empire Strikes Back is the fifth film in the Star Wars series, but it was the second one made.

Fantasy Literature

Fantasy stories have always been popular. People have been telling fantasy stories since the beginning of time. The oldest texts that exist are stories about dragons and magical creatures and quests where good triumphs over evil. Later, novels like Frankenstein and Dracula contained both magic and monsters. Fantasy books for children are also popular. Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz, and Alice in Wonderland were written a long time ago. In the 1950s, C.S. Lewis wrote The Chronicles of Narnia and J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. These fantasy stories are still popular today. In the last decades, J.K. Rowling’s books about Harry Potter have been a tremendous success. So what are some of the characteristics of the fantasy genre? First of all, there is always an element of magic – either the characters or some object have magical powers. We meet strange creatures, talking animals, flying cars, dragons, wizards, witches, hobbits and monsters. In The Hobbit, a golden ring can make the main character invisible. Secondly, there is a magical setting, within our world or in a magical world. Harry Potter, for example, takes the train from platform 9 ¾ to Hogwarts, a place where no mortal human can go. Narnia is a fantastic world where lions can talk and ordinary children become kings and queens. Thirdly, the themes are timeless and universal: good versus evil, love and hate, honour and courage, and therefore appeal to people of all ages all over the world. Lastly, the plot involves a journey or a quest where the hero fights the forces of evil. Vurderingseksemplar This conflict makes the story suspenseful. Fantasy stories take us on journeys into the unknown and give us a chance to escape from our ordinary lives into magical worlds where anything is possible.
