Importer Security Filing 101

Stay compliant with U.S. Customs by providing the required Importer Security Filing (ISF) details on time to avoid penalties and cargo delays

Pieces of Data Required from the Importer

• Manufacturer (or supplier) name and address

• Seller (or owner) name and address

• Buyer (or owner) name and address

• Ship-to name and address

• Container stuffing location

• Consolidator (stuffer) name and address

• Importer of record number/foreign trade zone applicant identification number

• Consignee number(s)

• Country of origin

• Commodity Harmonized Tariff Schedule number to six (6) digits

Pieces of Data Required from the Carrier

• Vessel stow plan

• Container status messages

Who, When, Where, Why, How?

Who: Supplier/Shipper must provide Buyer/Importer with required data elements and Buyer/Importer must file ISF or arrange for ISF to be filed by broker/agent

When: ISF information must be provided and filed at least 24 hours prior to vessel sailing from port of origin

Where: ISF must be filed through the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) through an ABI processing system

Why: Failure to comply with the rule could result in monetary penalties, increased inspections and delay of cargo.

How: A valid Power of Attorney is required by the Customs broker to file the ISF required data on behalf of the importer
