The moderndefinition of artifi cial intelligence (or Al) is "the study anddesign of intelligent agents" where an intelligent agent is asystem that per ceives its environment and takes actions whichmaximizes its chances of success in achieving a specific goal. It can be stated that Artificial Intelligence (Al) is the branch ofcomputer science which emphesizes on the development ofintelligence machines, think ing and working like humans. Forexample, speech rec ognition, problem-solving, learning andplanning like hu Theremans. are many products based on Al technology around uswithout our realizing like Nest and Alexa of Google, Tesla (thecar with self driving capabilities), Netflix, and SIRI of Apple tonamea few. It may be of interest to know that over the years, Al research hasgone through several Al winters, a period in which thedevelopment of algorithmic techniques hit a road block due tolack of interest or investment. This mainly happens because thecompanies with initial en thusiasm invested huge amount inresearch in the field of Al but soon became disillusionedbecause of the little or no progress.

Artificial Intelligence The term Artificial Intelligence was coined by an American computer scientist and cogni tive scientist John McCarthy in theyear 1955. In year 1956, at the Dartmouth Conference, a smallgroup of prominent researchers including John McCarthy,Marvin Minsky, Claude Shannon and Norbert Wiener proposedthat “every aspect of learning or any other feature ofintelligence can be so precisely described that a ma chine can bemade to simulate it.” McCarthy defined it as “the science andengineering of making intelligent machines."

The application of data and the quest to understand theavai lable data is something that has been in existence for a longtime. As a matter of fact, some of the earliest records of theapplication of data to analyze and control business activitiesdate as far back as 7,000 years. This was with the introduction ofaccounting in ated at a much faster ratethan data in the past from all kinds of sources including socialmedia) and Variety (variety of structured, unstructured etc). The other ‘Vs’ that are getting fast associated with Big Data are Variability (refers to the changing nature of data), Visu alization (refers to the art of turning data science into visual stories viagraphs and other charts to transform data into in formation, intoinsight, into knowledge etc.) and Value (refers to the fact that busi nesses need to take advan tage of all this data into somevaluable decisions). of huge data storage capac ities at throwaway prices and the mind boggling computational speeds of modern pro cessors, has finally provided the much awaited boost to Big Data, Internet of Things and Al development.

Conclusion There is no doubt that Al, loT and Big Data is going to change ourlives in every sphere of activity. Whether we accept it or not, thetechnology is going to impact us. The need is to takeprecautions, to think about the goals that we need to achieveand see how these technologies can be used in realization ofthose goals. However, it is important to understand that merelybringing in these technologies is not going to help. As ChiefSolution Officer of Redwood Solutions, Devin Gharibian Sa kiput it, “You have to have an idea of what you want in the end, otherwise, all that data, technology and sensors are useless.” Assuch, ensuring that people understand how loT, Big Data and Alinteract and improve each other is the most important thing wecan doto bring real improvements to our lives.

They are the best exam ples from Hyderabad that there is nothing a woman cannot do. From storming what was for cen turies a male bastion in 2017, these women loco pilots of the Hyderabad Metro Rail have proved they can do more than just drive a train. As celebrations are already on for International Women’s Day, we bring you the story of around 65 women who steer the Hyderabad Metro Rail every day, proving naysayers wrong each day. Born into a middle-class family in Warangal, Sravani Burra studied Electronics and Com munications Engineering. She had plans to become a techie, but they changed as soon as she landed a job with the Metro Rail. It was in 2019 when she first got into the driver’s seat and two years later, she says not a day goes by that she isn’t proud of being in her post.

It was not easy for these women to get selected. Gruel ling psychometric tests, re search designs, several technical rounds and medical tests later, they had to undergo three months of intense train ing, including backbreaking sessions on simulators. “But all the hard work and sac rifices were worth it in the end,” says 23-year-old Priyanka Ereddy. “I love what I do, so I didn’t want to see anything as a difficult task,” she adds. For Navya Palakurla, 23, the joy in the job is unparalleled. She says commuters are never bored of seeing her in the driver’s cabin and at times she sees parents telling their children how a woman has taken up this profession. For many, the task of convinc ing their parents was a chal lenge. “Initially my parents

“I’m grateful. I always believed that a woman can do every thing a man can. Yes, it some times becomes demanding since my job requires alertness at all times. But it has been a satisfying journey so far,” says the 25-year-old, who does three round trips from Nagole to Raidurg every day. A typical day of a woman train operator shows how a woman wears many hats, effortlessly. For 24-year-old Pooja Du burka, the day starts at 6 am. She broke the infamous glass ceiling twice. First was when she joined Mechanical Engineering, a hugely male-dom inated field and then, by making waves on the Metro tracks. She has logged in over 50,000 km in the last 24

“Somemonths.people stare at us as if we are aliens while some cheer us. Initially, many said I will not survive in this field for long. It is common for any woman to face the heat whe never she decides to step into a male bastion. I’m glad that I took this step,” Pooja says.

In a society where women are often ridiculed for their driving skills, Pooja says, “Women are now driving trains, and I am proud to be one among them.”

Having been loco pilots this long, these women now want to go on to handle the jobs of a sta tion controller, a depot controller and even a traffic controller. The Hyderabad Metro Rail has always offered full support, says Kola Sravani. “There are proper systems to ensure the safety of every woman. In case we have an issue, we can raise the grievance to our higher official.”
