BENTO BOX GOREGAON, MUMBAI
An apartment for a family of 5 - grandparents, parents & daughter,
inspired from the traditional Japanese Bento Box. The simple
processes of addition and substraction applied to boxes, stacked together to create some interesting furniture and elements.
One of the most interesting elements in the living room was the flooring. A lot of experimentation went into designing this flooring, permutations
and combinations with these 200 x 200 cement tiles from Bharat Floorings in different shades and tones to come up with an interesting flooring
pattern. We finally ended up using Namisen Type E with a white stripe on grey, dorming irregular long lines, a sprinkle of colours breaking the monotony.

MEDITATION & YOGA RETREAT DEHRADUN, UTTARAKHAND
Architecture has been known to astound people, move humans to tears, warm the heart, or isolate people. However, many believe that not only
does architecture have the ability to affect us on an emotional level, but it also can make us physically ill or, on the other hand, heal our ailments.
The founding statement of this thesis is that spirituality influences architecture. The physical, psychological, symbolical and tactile qualities of architecture are essential in creating an environment conducive for spiritual practices.
The aim is to come up with an efficient spiritual facility that would cater to the healing needs of itâ€&#x;s users with the integration of all these factors (Yoga and
meditation, sound therapy, colour therapy) and how architecture can expose them in a facility designed specifically for such a healing.
- To explore how architecture can inform healing or provide spaces where healing can take place.
- To create a holistic environment which creates equilibrium of physical
health and mental clarity by understanding and integrating the five elements of nature and the five human senses. – Sensory architecture.
PHENOMENOLOGY OF SPACE
MEANING
Phenomenology is regarded as a multi-sensory architectural
Existence is composed of people, animals, flowers, trees, earth, stone, water,
of the senses brings the users closer to things and
elements. The landscape is believed to be a complete phenomenon. Place is an
doctrine by Pallasmaa who pointed out that the architecture also drives them within. The interaction of the senses – movement and action – is essential as one is then able to identify scales, and enhance perceptions by experiencing.
houses and civilizations. The sun, moon and stars are the other natural integral part of existence that is composed of materials, shapes, textures and
colour (Norberg-Schultz, 1980: 6). Phenomenology is therefore conceived as
the „return to things‟ where it is linked with psychology, ethics and aesthetics.
SENSATION
EXPERIENCE
Architectural work is not experienced as a series of isolated retinal
Since an architectural space is not an independent entity from its
essence. A distinctive exchange happens between human and space
its environment shape experiences. It is known that the essence of the
pictures, but in its fully integrated material, embodied and spiritual in the experience of architectural work; we lend our emotions and associations to each other. Space integrates physical and mental structures, gives solidity and meaning to our existential experience
environment; separations and integrations between the space and
spatial experience based on the relationship between subject and
object, is revealed by our reactions to space; our body and somatic experience play a major role in the formation of spatial image.
The centre has been designed to accommodate spiritual practices influenced by the
Indian meditation principles which accommodate both passive and dynamic techniques.
The open spaces and gardens have been planned in a way that would integrate the five elements of nature with the five human senses. An attempt to create an impact on
the human sub - conscious through use of colours, light and shadows, size of spaces, room layouts, exposure to nature and even encouragement of yoga and meditation.
The aim is to generate a holistic wellness resort that would cater to the healing needs of the users, through coexistence of the healing principles of the built environment
and nature. This includes luxurious accommodations and extensive fitness, spa and holistic health facilities designed to balance as well as revitalize mind, body, and spirit.
S E N S O R Y
G A R D E N
The sensory garden is inspired from a Celtic Knot. A series of overlapping or interwoven
knots which have no clear start or end and could be said to represent eternity. Only one thread is used in each design which symbolizes how life and eternity
are interconnected . The interweaving
points in the sensory garden symbolizes interdependence and interconnection of physical and spiritual aspects of our being.

URBAN DESIGN PAHARGANJ, DELHI This part of the site lies right opposite to the New Delhi railway station, on the Chelmsford Road, extending from D.B. Gupta road to the Main Bazaar Road.
it is one of the oldest parts of the Paharganj area. This area majorly comprises of residences, shops and their godowns and a number of hotels, the area has
gradually transformed into a hub ofcheap hotels because of it’s close proximity
to the railway station, frequented by backpackers and travellers. We were required to re imagine Paharganj as an urban hub in the heart of the city.
LOCATION Paharganj is a neighbourhood of Central Delhi, located just west of the New Delhi Railway Station.
It is one of the three administrative subdivisions,
of the Central Delhi district, of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, with the other two being, Darya Ganj and Karol Bagh. Originally an extension of
Old Delhi, it has now become a commercial region with the lower floors of almost all the buildings being used as shops and the higher floors as
residential spaces. The heritage of Old Delhi, thus
mingles with the new era when buildings as olds as 50-60years are used for modern day needs.

CIRCULATION
VISION
A city is an assemblage of buildings and
streets, system of communication and utilities, places of work, transportation,
leisure and meeting places. The process of
arranging these elements both functionally and beautifully is the essence of Urban Design. Delhi had a traditional Urban
Design which is reflected in the glory of 17th century Shahajahanabad and New Delhi.
Our aim was to redevelop Paharganj with an
attempt to densify the area while restoring
human scale and convenient living. The
area has been envisioned as a Central Business
District,
amalgamating
the
residential and commercial spheres, right in front of the New Delhi Railway Station. The
design
proposal
emphasises
on
creating a pedestrian reinforced public realm which is adaptable to various activities throughout the day, cater to
daily as well as recreational needs of all
age groups and economic/social groups of the society. The area has been majorly
pedestrianized to create walkable streets with the motive of discouraging the use
of private transport and enhancing the public transport infrastructure. The aim
is to create a sustainable district centre which can cater the rising pressure on the commercial sector of the capital. An attempt has been made to retain the
hierarchy of spaces and diverse character of the present day Paharganj through an
interweaved network of primary, secondary and arterial streets. The essence of the main bazaar road has been retained by
pedestrianizing it and developing it as the main shopping street of the area, allocating spaces for shops and handicraft
GUIDELINES All buildings with commercial or recreational activities on ground floor should have a frontage zone of 2.8-3m Overhangs from building facades over walkways should be upto a max 2-3m to shade the footpath. Buildings shall be built to the edge of the setback line, without boundary walls to create eyes on street and a sense of enclosure and comfort along streets.
There must be at least one primary pedestrian entry to each building from the main street. Clearance below any pedestrian bridge must be at least 5.5m

COMMUNITY HOUSING SAROJINI NAGAR, NEW DELHI
The main objective of this design activity was to understand the requirements and mindset of the various sections of the society and come up with a design program that would benefit the community as a whole.
Our design intent was to break the monotony of cluster housing and promote social interaction, while maintaining a certain degree of privacy. An attempt was made to provide expansion opportunities to the users without meddling with the initial form and structure of the buildings.
One of the major challenges, that we faced while designing a group housing, is that the client is unknown. Since their needs and tastes were unknown while designing, the spaces had to be designed in a way that would serve different sections of the society and their preferences. Keeping that in mind, we made an attemp to provide variable choices for a single area requirement.
OPEN SPACES AND ACTIVE NODES
PEDESTRIAN AND VEHICULAR CIRCULATION
The design adheres to the master plan concept of pertaining to pedestrian links. As an added convenience to the residents, it
is ensured that all the green spaces and cluster cores are connected by pedestrian paths. All the cores are accessible by the
vehicular roads. Social gathering spaces help capture the essence of community living. Open spaces have been strategically segregated with an aim to strike a balance between living in a private house and a flat.
We’ve made an attempt to activate all the junctions and intersections – the major nodes by introducing commercial shops and recreational spaces in the form of public squares, thus making the surroundings interactive and lively.
BREAKING THE MONOTONY The units have been designed on a modular grid, decreasing in area as we go up, allowing us to create an interesting mix of HIG, MIG and LIG units. This also enables us to provide recessed terraces at regular intervals. The units have been stacked in different permutations and combinations to give a unique irregular form to each
and every cluster. The clusters have been interconnected through greens on different levels throughout the site.

TYPE A (150) + TYPE E (60)
TYPE C (120) + TYPE E (60)
TYPE B (150) + TYPE C (120)
TYPE B (150) + TYPE D (60)
HIG, MIG and LIG units come together ina cluster in order to promote community
living and overcome social distinction. Terraces with good spatial qualities help eradicate this issue by providing interactive opportunities. For instance, a financially
weaker person may wish to buy a dwelling unit with all the rooms built, thus utilizing each and every area of the unit very efficiently. At the same time a financially able person may wish to have a terrace garden in their house. We’ve made an attempt to cater to such varied demands and clients through our design.
Another issue that we could conclude through our case studies was lack of expansion
opportunities. Many residents choose to modify or expand their spaces due to growth of their families and other reasons. During the process, the structural issues
and the form of the building are generally overlooked. Through our design, we
intend to provide for future incremental opportunities without actually disturbing
the form of the building by providing large open recessed verandahs and terraces.
VISUAL AXIS The users get an unobstructed
perspective view of the complete site and the central green from every level through multilevel terraces maintaining the visual axis of the
site, through and through creating interesting pleasing views.

TYPE C
MODULATIONS The major chalenge, we face while designing a community housing is the variety of users we are targeting and the fact that their preferences and affording capacity are barely known.
Keeping this in mind, we’ve proposed variable typologies for the same area requirement.
A person wishing to buy a 120sqm aprtment can either go for a Simplex or a Duplex, a 2BHK or a 3BHK, a ground floor apartment or a penthouse, according to his needs.
We started with a modular grid based floor plate, which keeps on reducing in size as we
go up, consequently creating recessed terraces, and huge open green spaces within the building itself.
Through different permutations and combinations, we were able to strike a combination,
which would allow us to accomodate as many dwelling units as possible, without sacrificing the requirement for open green spaces.

The main objective was to identify and understand an actual family and context and cater to the environmental concerns, social equity and sustainability through design.
The main thrust was on optimization of resources rather than minimisation. An impact analysis in terms of psychological, social and economic influence of the design.

more than one specific purpose, therefore, helping a family in transition remain as tangible as possible.
The mother sleeps with the daughter. The family doesn’t feel comfortable letting the daughter sleep alone since her room opens up directly into the verandah.
The father’s and son’s room were a little diatant from each other.
