Dear Rotarians, Warm Greetings to each one of you. I'm sure the festival of lights Diwali must have really enlightened your life with joy & happiness. Last month, we lost one of our beloved and enthusiastic Charter Member & Past President, Rtn. Pravin (Bhai) Gadekar. Club will always remember Bhai for his valuable contribution to the Club for over 23 years, May Bhai's soul rest in peace & may the Almighty give us - the Rotary Family strength and courage to sustain this ir-repairable loss. Rotary Club of Bicholim turns 24 on 10th November 2016. It's indeed a proud privilege to lead such a vibrant Rotary Club in R I District 3170, comprising of dedicated and knowledgeable members. Wish you all a HAPPY CHARTER DAY. The month of November is TRF month in the Rotary International Calendar. All social organisations serve and survive and grow on oxygen of donations & other monetary contributions made by generous people like you and Rotary International is no difference. The contributions made to The Rotary Foundation enables RI to undertake various social and charitable projects on a mega scale. TRF has been instrumental in changing the lives of the under privileged and needy across the globe through RI and Rotary Clubs. Polio eradication is a fine example. I request you all to continue to contribute generously, as you all have been doing over the years, to build a stronger TRF for an even stronger Rotary that will serve the community above self in years to come. Yours in Rotary

Dear Rotarians, It's never too old to dream. At age 5 his Father died. At age 16 he quit school. At age 17 he had already lost four jobs. At age 18 he got married. Between ages 18 and 22, he was a railroad conductor and failed. He joined the army and washed out there. He applied for law school he was rejected. He became an insurance sales man and failed again. At age 19 he became a father. At age 20 his wife left him and took their baby daughter. He became a cook and dishwasher in a small cafe. He failed in an attempt to kidnap his own daughter, and eventually he convinced his wife to return home. At age 65 he retired. On the 1st day of retirement he received a cheque from the Government for $105. He felt that the Government was saying that he couldn’t provide for himself. He decided to commit suicide, it wasn’t worth living anymore; he had failed so much. He sat under a tree writing his will, but instead, he wrote what he would have accomplished with his life. He realised there was much more that he hadn’t done. There was one thing he could do better than anyone he knew. And that was how to cook. So he borrowed $87 against his cheque and bought and fried up some

rich avifaunal diversity found in various habitats. India harbours 1206 species of birds which is 13 percent of the total bird species in the world. It also has 48 families of birds out of 75 families found in the whole world. Birds of warm, moist, tropical forests like Dranges, Leaf Birds, Pittas, Parrot, Bills, Flower Peckers, etc. are found on a large scale on the east coast of India. The Indian sub-continent plays host to a number of migratory birds in summers as well as winters. Over hundred species of birds fly to India either in search of feeding grounds or to escape the severe winter of their native habitat. Siberian Cranes, Greater Flamingos, Common teal, Yelow Wagtail, Rosy Pelican, Godwall, etc. are some of the migratory birds. Birds have been of great importance and use to the humans since ancient times. They are an important source of food for people all over the world. Avifauna can be referred to as the birds of a particular region, habitat or geographical period. Thousands of species of birds found in our nature are excellent indicators of forest ecosystem as their abundance and diversity are closely related to the changes and disturbances in the habitat variations in population, behavior patterns and reproductive ability have most often been used to examine the long term effects of habitat fragmentation. Forests attract a large number of species of birds as they provide a suitable habitat for birds, especially those which are associated with vegetarian and the existence of trees is a vital part of their life cycle. Water bodies like lakes and ponds also provide a habitat to certain bird species. Ecologically birds are of tremendous importance because of their key role as pollinators, agents of seed dispersal, scavengers of carcasses and helpers for recycling the nutrients back into the earth. Understanding the biodiversity and structure of bird communities or varieties is essential to delineate the importance of local or regional landscape for avian conservation. The avian habitat is roughly divide into forests, scrubs and wetlands. India has a great diversity of habitats for birds, ranging from Alpine meadows in the Himalayas to the tropical forests, from wetland ecosystems to desert ecosystems. Trustee Chair’s Message

that I especially recommend. The first is to hold an event for the entire community that spotlights the Foundation’s 100 years of Doing Good in the World. Second, plan and sponsor a project that addresses a -critical problem. It could be done from locally raised funds, or you might seek a global grant. There are so many options to choose from from providing clean water, to ensuring basic education for girls in every part of the world, to tackling malaria or HIV/AIDS or any number of preventable diseases. The third activity I recommend is for every Rotarian to make a centennial donation. Let’s never forget that The Rotary Foundation belongs to all of us. You and I provide the funding for just about every bit of good that our Foundation is doing in the world — and has been doing for an entire century. Let’s make sure we continue that tradition for the next 100 years. Kalyan Banerjee Trustee Chair 2016 - 17

C e l e b r a t e R o ta r y Foundation Month Back in 1956, the Rotary International Board of Directors designated a week in November -urging all clubs “to devote a programme to The Rotary Foundation.” In 1982, the Board determined that the entire month of November should be dedicated to the Foundation. Since then our Foundation has grown and flourished in ways that few Rotarians could have imagined. In 1985, Rotary took on its first corporate project — a bold campaign to -immunise the world’s children against polio and create a poliofree world. Our humanitarian programmes grew so rapidly that the -Foundation could not process the volume of requests for grants efficiently. That led to the creation of a new grant model that supports global grants with greater and long-lasting impact and district grants which fund small-scale, short-term -activities. And we fulfilled Rotarians’ long-held dream for a “peace -university” with the launch of the Rotary Peace Centres. Rotarian financial support has skyrocketed as well. In 1982–83, contributions barely totaled $19 million. Compare that with 2015–16, when the figure jumped to $265.6 million. This November, we’ll celebrate not just Foundation Month, but also The Rotary Foundation’s centennial. The Rotary -website offers many creative ideas for honouring this very -special occasion, but there are three activities

R. I. President’s Message

I am looking forward to seeing many of you at our international convention in Atlanta: the city where our Foundation was born. I hope a record number of Rotarians will be there to celebrate the centennial of our Foundation. In the meantime, there are plenty of other ways to celebrate! I encourage you to read more about the Foundation centennial at centennial.rotary.org. There, you’ll learn about the history of our Foundation and find ideas for events and projects in your clubs and your community. One of the most important ways we are celebrating the -Foundation centennial is with a fundraising goal of $300 million. Your gift to your Foundation is the best way of ensuring a strong second century for Rotarians Doing Good in the World and for Rotary Serving Humanity. Rtn. John F. Germ R.I. President 2016-17

Arch Klumph’s Revolution Dear Fellow Rotarians, Looking back at the momentous 1917 Rotary -Convention in Atlanta, it is difficult to see what could have been -contentious about the words of then-President Arch C. Klumph: “It seems -eminently proper that we should accept endowments for the -purpose of doing good in the world.” Yet, at the time, support for the idea was far from unanimous. Some thought an -endowment fund would create more trouble than it was worth. But Klumph’s idea received the support it most needed in the form of an -initial donation of $26.50 from the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri. Nearly 100 years later, we recognise Klumph’s idea as not only visionary, but revolutionary: It set in place the mechanism that allowed Rotary to become the vast force for “doing good in the world” that it is today. In many ways, our Rotary Foundation is the foundation of Rotary as we know it. It has created a mechanism for -cooperation and partnership among clubs and between Rotary and other organisations; it has enabled us to be ever more ambitious in our work and to reach for goals of historic proportions, such as the eradication of polio. It is impossible to quantify the good that has been done over the last century as a result of The Rotary Foundation. All we can know for sure is that Arch Klumph, if he could see it, would be proud.

diseases, example, Bird Flu. Eating of insects by birds is a natural way to control pests in farms, gardens, etc. Nector feeding birds are important pollinators, example Humming Bird, Sunbird, etc. Feathers of birds are commonly used to stuff pillows, bags, mattresses, coats, etc. all over the world. Bird watching is a popular recreational activity and has now become a part of tourism industry. In Goa, the Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is an estusrin mangrove habitat, located on the western tip of the island of Chorao along river Mandovi. Several species of birds including the Striated heron, Western Reef Heron, The little Bittern, the Red knot and many other migratory birds can be seen here. In recent years a large number of anthropogenic activities like uses of pesticides in agriculture, deforestation, livestock grazing, hunting, fishing, development of industries, urbanisation and sound pollution are some of the major threats to the bird biodiversity. Reducing pollution is a major step in improving the health and growth of the endanged species. Protected areas such as wildlife sanctuaries, national parks and biodiversity reserves are increasing the recognized to support biodiversity. Hunters and poachers should be punished strictly. More NGOs should come forward for the protection of species and develop consciousness and the Ministry of Environment and Forest should support the State Government to carry out good work of protecting the bird species and their habitat. To make India clean we don’t need any hi-tech machine, By making India dirty aren’t we being mean ? To make India evergreen, Stop using polythene By using polythene we’re destroying the marine. We admire cleanliness in magazines, But decline using it in our routine. Let’s vouch to make India green, It will also improve our hygine. Global warming is increasing, Our life span decreasing.
