Immigration Power Fuels Change on Buffalo’s West Side

asylum.” They ﬂew in to JFK and took a bus from NYC to Buffalo, the nearest US city to Toronto. They arrived in Buffalo on a rainy night with two suitcases, no English and little money. They stayed at the International Hostel downtown, sleeping on bunks and sharing a room with another family. Three days later Andrea went into labor four months early. Their third child, Sebastian, was born a terribly distressed “preemie” at Children’s Hospital and the family was immediately plunged into despair. “He had every problem there was,” said Andrea, “His lungs didn’t work, his heart didn’t work, his brain was leaking. He didn’t move at all and didn’t make any sounds. He was on life support.” “After two weeks,” said Joaquin, “they told us we should disconnect him from life support because even if he lived he would have no life. He would be like a vegetable.” “We said we couldn’t do that,” said Andrea. “So the doctor said there was one last thing they could try, a heart surgery. But they said he might die during the surgery. We told them to do the surgery. So they did it and we waited and a few days later he moved his foot.”

Joaquin, Andrea, Sebastian, Jaronimo, Marianna > BY ELIZABETH SIEMATKOWSKI here has been a lot of press about the international culinary delights of immigrants and refugees who dish out delicious ethnic foods at the West Side Bazaar on Grant St. The West Side Bazaar is unquestionably an important factor in the revitalization of the West Side. But there are other émigrés not found in trendy media stories who are quietly making contributions that are truly signiﬁcant.

Joaquin and Andrea Aristizabal are a great example of humble people significantly nourishing growth of Buffalo’s West Side. This kind and genuine couple who emigrated here from Columbia are truly realizing the American Dream, and Buffalo should be thankful. Because in the pursuit of their dream they lent a strong hand toward eliminating the West Side’s historically dangerous gangs and drug dealers. They’ve renovated numerous homes on 19th street and Bird Ave. and are pioneers in making Buffalo’s West side the place to be. I had the opportunity to tour their new BnAirB, at 33 19th street, followed with a conversation over beers at the Essex Pub. The couple describe ending up in Buffalo as “a beautiful mistake.” They arrived in Buffalo with their two children on September 21st, 2007. Andrea was five months pregnant. The family had fled Columbia and were seeking asylum from 4

those who murdered Andreas’ father, the FARC (Armed Revolutionary Forces of Columbia). Formed in 1964 the FARC was originally the military wing of Columbia’s communist party, modeled after Fidel Castro’s revolutionary army in Cuba. But the political idealists of the 1960s disappeared long ago. “They have no political agenda anymore,” said Joaquin. “Their political agenda died in the 80s. Now they are only in the drug and extortion business. But for the world they still pretend to be a political guerilla organization ﬁghting for the peasant farmers against imperialism. It’s not true.” “After Pablo Escobar was shot dead in 1993 and the other drug lords were killed or sent to prison,” said Andrea, “the FARC became the new drug lords. My father was a farmer and an activist ﬁghting against the drug trade. He was murdered when he went to help farmers suffering extortion from the FARC. The FARC force farmers to grow cocoa, then they take it from them and sell it to the drug dealers who process cocaine.” “Our asylum was based on being targets of the FARC,” said Joaquin. “We applied for asylum in Canada but we had a bad lawyer who didn’t do the paperwork properly. We knew we could get asylum in Canada if we were actually in Canada. We had a visa to come to United States so we came here planning to go to Toronto to ask for

“Oh, my God, we were all so excited that he moved his foot,” said Joaquin. “And then little by little other things started kicking in.” They spent the next eight months at the Ronald McDonald house while the baby was monitored day and night. Nine years later, Sebastian is now a student at Olmsted Elementary and is a healthy, strong, smart boy. The other two children are students at City Honors. Andrea pulled a family portrait from her wallet to show me the three kids; they all had cute periwinkle satin bows tied around their necks including their German Shepard who also was in the photo “We consider our dog family,” said Andrea. “I always had a dog, a German Shepard, and I had to leave my dog behind in Columbia. I want a dog for me and because I have children, too. I searched for the right dog and we found him on Craigslist.” “We had to drive all the way to Jamestown for him,” said Joaquin. I ask what happened to the plan to go to Toronto? “After staying for months in the hospital and at Ronald McDonald House with the baby,” said Joaquin, “we met many wonderful people and learned our way around everywhere here in Buffalo. We got here in September and stayed all the winter and then after winter when spring

comes the city is born again and it’s like ‘Oh my God, this is really awesome.’ And we thought ‘you know what, we better stay here.’ So we applied for asylum here.” While at the Ronald McDonald House, Andrea and Joaquin learned English at the International Institute on Delaware. They also met Ronald McDonald House manager Ellen Halley who they now call, “our first ‘American Mom.’” She helped the couple find a place to live through her church after their eight-month stay RMH. They told me about their first winter and the first time they saw snow. “It was like the movies,” Andrea said, “We were so excited.” Joaquin said he’ll never forget that first time he saw snow, “it looked like a magical white carpet.” They joked about how they thought they had “jackets” and were all set for winter. Their jackets were more like a light over shirt compared to the winter jackets they were given by the church group their “American Mom” had introduced to them. They laughed about that and said they have fond memories of that first Buffalo winter. The church group and some individuals from the Ronald McDonald house got together that Christmas and surprised them with gifts for the kids, “I had never seen so many toys” said Joaquin and Andrea, getting me all choked up. “They even got gifts for us.” In 2008 Joaquin met a guy he calls Joe G. He started doing carpentry and odd jobs with Joe, most of which were on 19th street. This was quite different from what he did in Columbia. Although Joaquin had a bachelor’s degree in accounting, in Bogota he ran a coffee shop and a theatre that produced Spanish translations of avant-garde plays by writers like Samuel Beckett, Ionesco, Franz Kafka and other Europeans. “We have a rich theatre culture in Bogota,” said Joaquin. “It’s a big city, eight million people, where you can see maybe seventy different plays on a Friday or Saturday night.” Joaquin was also an actor, and according to Andrea a very good one. So he worked with Joe G. who owned a couple of homes on the street and needed help with the renovations. It wasn’t long before Joaquin caught the West Side renovation bug and started securing his own properties to renovate. Seven years later the couple has several apartment rental properties, as well AirBnBs. Joaquin recalled those early days working on 19th street. He said he would be painting homes and would run to grab some tools from the truck and walk through gang members sitting on the porch and selling drugs on the street. “There were a lot of gangs here when I started

their business. “We own four properties,” said Andrea. “I like the AirBnB because it’s more money every month, the economics are much better. And we like it when other people come from different countries and we talk to them.” “We had people from 30 different countries,” said Joaquin. “The AirBnB is fun. The money of course is good but it is fun. We get all these people who want to talk and want to tell you all about another culture and other places.” The nightly rates for an AirBnB definitely add up to more than monthly apartment rent. In fact, if the party is too large for one of their AirBnBs, say ten people, Joaquin and Andrea will rent them their own home and stay at one of their other properties. Last summer they rented out their home and the family rented a cabin in Crystal Beach. I couldn’t help but wonder how they got the capital to buy properties considering they arrived here penniless. “Capital?” said Joaquin. “If you work 80 hours a week you’ll have some money left. I would work the whole day for somebody to get some money and then at night work on our project and my wife will come and work with me. Then we go home and the next day just do it again. And we’ll work on Saturdays and Sundays. Joaquin and Andrea Aristizabal, in front of one of their AirBnB’s on 19th Street working full time as a carpenter in 2010,” said Joaquin. “They hung out a couple of houses down from where we lived. There were lots of drugs here and shootings in the middle of the day.” Things were bad. 2010 was the peak of gang warfare on the West Side with the 7th St. gang fighting the 10th St. gang, fighting the 19th St. gang and so on. “One of the guys from another street came here,” said Joaquin, “and he shot the leader of the 19th St. gang right in front of this house. That was in the middle of the day in 2010.” That was the murder of Virgil Page in June, 2010 by Kasiem Williams. As an example of just how crazy things were back then, Page’s murder was part of a deal made with “Cheko” Hidalgo, leader of the 7th St. gang. In return for killing Page the 7th ST. gang agreed to murder two rival 10th St. gang members. Nine people were murdered that year on the West Side and many more wounded. But Joaquin and Andrea hung in there. “So the gang leader died but the gang was still around,” said Joaquin. “But we kept improving things and good people were moving in and that made the drug dealers uncomfortable. There was this old black lady in her 70s who used to call the police all the time ‘Hey somebody’s selling drugs in front of my house.’ She would stand right in the window and call so everyone could

see her on the phone. And she would come out and yell at the drug dealers. She was fearless. She posted a sign on her lawn ‘Don’t sell drugs on my property.’ “But that house she lived in had safety issues with a lot of mold and she was told she had to leave it. She was very upset and running around saying ‘what am I going to do? I don’t want to leave I know this neighborhood already.’ “The guy next door to me said ‘you want to buy my house?’ He wanted to retire. “So I bought the house and we rushed to fix the house up right away to try and get it ready in time for the black lady to move in. Andrea helped too and we would work the whole day and work again at night. Paint at night and stuff like that so the old woman can move in. She made so much noise about the drug problem we wanted to keep her here on the street. We knew she was fierce and not afraid. So we finished the house and she moved in. Eventually the 19th St. gang and all the other gangs pretty much left because the pressure started working finally.” The pressure certainly did start working. The FBI got 62 indictments that year and dozens of gang members were sent to do hard time, including the murderer of Virgil Page who got a 25 to life sentence. Things are much more peaceful now and Joaquin and Andrea focus on their children and

“When we stayed in the cabin in Crystal Beach there was a little sign that I took a picture of that said ‘The More I Work the Luckier I Get.’ That is so true, especially if you have a good partner like my wife to work with. Then you can save money and you can stretch the budget. Down payments on our properties were tax returns. But a very important thing is that we were able to find people who believed in us enough to say ‘Ok, I’ll give you the house and you give me the down payment and pay the rest off in four or five years. So the owner of the house held the mortgage. Three of the properties we bought, a person holds the mortgage not a bank.” It’s undeniable that incredible things are happening on the West Side. Businesses are popping up left and right—Five Points Bakery, Shakti Yoga, West Side Bazaar, Sweetness 7 Cafe, soon to open Public Espresso, to name a few. I get this little jolt of excitement every time I think about spending time on the West side. When I asked Joaquin and Andrea what their favorite part about Buffalo is, they both said without hesitation, “The people, we love the people.” They described the people in Buffalo as the kindest people they met anywhere. “The thing with asylum is that you don’t get that much help from the government or any organization,” said Joaquin. “You have to fend for yourself. We found these people from this church called The Simple Way Community Church. It’s like five or six families that just find people and help people. They get together in different

places. They don’t have a big church building, they meet in different peoples’ homes. They are good friends to us and helped us and they are still helping families. If a new family comes and they have kids and they don’t have food or clothes, the group puts money in to buy food and clothes. They called us just recently and they say ‘Hey Joaquin, any chance you have something open? We have this woman with three kids and her house is infested with rats. We need to move her out. We found a place for her but we need a week to get it ready.’ So we open up the BnAirB across the street and let her and her three kids stay in the apartment while they fixed up her new place. That was our contribution and the other people got her some furniture and fixed the apartment up so this lady can move in.” When I asked the couple what they hope for, they said they hope people continue to stay and invest in their communities versus leaving the city and working elsewhere. They talked about their commitment to “buying and selling locally” in Buffalo and really striving to do their part to invest in the community. They also talked about their hopes for continued governmental grants and assistance to help match the energy and local effort to revitalize Buffalo and continue to work to make it a safe place to live with job opportunities. When I asked them if they miss Colombia or have plans of ever returning and leaving Buffalo, they said, “No this is our home now, we love it here.” They talked about traveling and perhaps spending some time in Quebec City to experience the French language and culture there, but with the intention of Buffalo being “our home base always.” And how do they feel about the changing neighborhood? “We love the neighborhood,” said Andrea. “There are restaurants around and people around and houses being fixed up.” “The snowball effect works in both directions,” said Joaquin. “When a neighborhood starts going down bad things pile up and it goes down faster and faster. But when good people start moving in things change. The gangs aren’t surrounded by drug customers who keep them in business. They’re surrounded by more and more good people, so they start leaving or being arrested. When the gangs decide to go more people want to move into the neighborhood. You see people buying houses, young couples getting started. We’re close to Elmwood close to Richmond. It’s really nice, we love it.” Two months ago Joaquin, Andrea were granted full US citizenship. I almost started crying with happiness for them, I could not be more proud of the US in that moment for making this beautiful couple a part of this country. he name Cosmic Truth is evocative; it’s alluring. It’s a ubiquitous collection of words that conjures up endless amounts of images – the search for alien lifeforms, binge watching The X-Files, trying to find a spiritual higher meaning, or in this case, the latest offering from Resurgence Brewing Company. This Mosaic Hopped Session Ale, brewed to replace the brewery’s Session IPA, is just as session ales are meant to be – bright, clean and easy drinking. To say Cosmic Truth is approachable would be a severe understatement. Actually, crushable might be a more apt adjective. After just one sip, it’s easy to imagine yourself enjoying a fresh pint while sitting in the sunshine outside in Resurgence’s beer garden. It pours a shiny transparent gold and features a heaping helping of mosaic hops as well as pine, tropical fruits, melon and white grapes. And while it might be sad to see the Session IPA go, it’s nice to finally have the truth in a glass. While Special Agent Fox Mulder might have you believe that the truth is out there, the truth, the Cosmic Truth, can in fact be found, but it’s not abducting people and leaving crop circles in middle-of-nowhere America all while being covered up by shadowy government figures, it’s flowing freely from the taps at Resurgence Brewing.

ast week I wrote a love letter to my favorite German-style Pilsner. This week, I’m sending a thank you note to it’s famous Czech cousin. Pilsner Urquell, you golden beast, you’ve done it again! You’ve reminded me that simplicity is a recipe for staying power. You defined clarity in clouded times and have taught the world to follow in the shadow of your lagered success. Hell, you were around when people first were widely able to drink from glass if that says anything. You have not lost your integrity in the most historically amazing time to exist as a beer. For this, I thank you. If you’re looking to get your lips around what a true Pilsner should taste like, start here. Soft bready malt and spicy hop aromatics are balanced by a firm bitterness and clean finish. These are words. There aren’t many foods that Pilsner doesn’t complement. If you’re into fish, smoked salmon makes a wonderful pair. If you’re into spicy Mexican, Pilsner cuts the heat. Versatile in so many ways, Czech Pilsner is always at the top in my book of beer cool.

André Watts > BY JAN JEZIORO ndré Watts developed an early reputation as one of the most exciting American classical concert pianists, and he has managed to maintain that reputation for over a half a century. At 8pm this Saturday, February 20 and at 2:30pm on Sunday February 21, BPO music director JoAnn Falletta will be on the podium in Kleinhans Music Hall to lead the orchestra in what may well be the most ideally balanced program of the season.

Leonard Bernstein, the charismatic music director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, who probably did more than any other conductor to expand the audience for classical music in America in the post World War II era, selected the then 16 year old pianist to perform Liszt’s Concerto in E-ﬂat for his debut with the New York Philharmonic in their Young People’s Concerts, broadcast nationwide on CBS-TV. Two weeks later, Bernstein asked Watts to substitute at the last minute for the ailing Glenn Gould in performances of the same concerto at a pair of New York Philharmonic subscription series concerts, and in effect launching his career in a manner worthy of a traditional Hollywood bio ﬁlm. Buffalo classical music audiences have been privileged to hear Watts perform many times, both as a soloist with the BPO, and in recital, most notably on the much-missed former QRS series, and it’s also defunct successor, the Ramsi P. Tick Concert series. Watts has experienced some medical issues in the last few decades, which have resulted in some unfortunate, last minute performance cancellations, most notably for his RP Tick recital, which was cancelled twice,

causing at least a few local classical music lovers to consider giving up their Andre Watts fan club memberships. Not to worry, the third time proved to be a charm, with Watts delivering the kind of high voltage, but still incredibly controlled, allLiszt program, the calling card that earned him his reputation. Andre Watts will be the soloist in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, the most poetic of his five concertos for piano and orchestra, a work that he has not previously performed here in his long association with the orchestra. The second half of the program will feature Hungarian composer Béla Bartók’s last symphonic masterpiece, his brilliant and sonically irresistible 1943 Concerto for Orchestra. The concert will open with Samuel Barber’s vivid Overture to “The School for Scandal.” Composed in 1933 when Barber was finishing his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, it was his first work for orchestra, and it manages to successfully capture the brittle comic spirit of Richard Sheridan’s witty Restoration play. Over the last half century, Leonard Pennario, Clifford Curzon, Christoph Eschenbach, Alicia de Larrocha, Eugene Istomin, Jeffrey Kahane, Emanuel Ax, Louis Lortie and William Wolfram have all performed Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 with the BPO. It would be difficult to assemble a more distinguished roster of international piano soloists, so what is it about this particular concerto that continues to appeal to pianists? Before the tragic loss of his hearing, Beethoven was a commanding pianist who enjoyed wide popularity and had a strong sense of the concerto form as a kind of theater. Up until he composed

this concerto, virtually all piano concertos had started with an orchestral introduction, but here, Beethoven stood this convention on its head, by letting the soloist begin to play unaccompanied, a dramatic masterstroke that was not emulated by any other composer until the 20th century. The opening movement continues along a strikingly original path, culminating in an unexpected cadenza beginning in what Michael Steinberg describes as “a blatantly ‘wrong’ key” and “most audiences usually don’t believe that it is really by Beethoven.” The renowned British musicologist D.F. Tovey wrote that it was Liszt himself who compared the slow movement of this concerto to “Orpheus taming the wild beast with his music,” and if there has subsequently been some question as to the attribution of this quote, the spirit is nevertheless indisputably true. The sublimely evocative dream spell is ultimately broken in the final Rondo movement, when trumpets and drums make their first appearance in what Steinberg describes as “a charmingly oblique, Haydnesque approach” to the finale. Bartók composed his Concerto for Orchestra in 1943 in America, revising it just before his death from leukemia in 1946. Bartók had strongly opposed the rise of Nazi Germany, and his anti-fascist views had caused him great difficulties in his native Hungary when that country decided to side with Germany. Reluctantly, he immigrated to the United States in 1940, but as his music was not well known here he experienced economic difficulties in addition to developing the illness that ultimately caused his death. The Russian composer Serge Koussevitzky, who was also the music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, offered Bartók a commission for the Concerto for Orchestra when the composer was in a hospital bed, and subsequently premiered the work to great success with his orchestra on December 1, 1944, the work remaining highly popular ever since. If you didn’t know the story behind the composition of the Concerto for Orchestra, it would be impossible to guess that it was composed by someone who was seriously ill. While concertos usually feature a solo instrument with orchestral accompaniment, Bartók’s work treats whole sections of instruments as virtuosic soloists. The composer makes highly effective use of his lifelong study of folk music, combining it with traditional western classical elements to create a uniquely engaging orchestral work that BPO music director JoAnn Falletta has vividly brought to life in previous performances. reat things should not go unappreciated, especially when the one responsible for it has been credited with some amazing stuff in the past. John Allison may be best known for his hilarious webcomics Bad Machinery and Scary Go Round, but not loving his physical comic series should be classiﬁed as a crime. In Giant Days, Susan Ptomely, Daisy Wooton, and Esther de Groot have been at university for three weeks now, and everything has already gone to hell (although that might just be due to the effects of Esther’s constant radiating a Drama Field). The book is full of perverted boys, worst enemies, and mystical tattoos—in other words, typical college stuff! Everything is done in Lissa Treiman’s loose, yet realistic, art style, akin to M Goodwin’s work in Princeless. In fact, readers of Princeless would love Giant Days. Bright colors are used throughout the entire graphic novel, but used in ways at times to emphasize a character’s emotions, whether positive or negative. Nothing is safe from being used to give the characters more life, especially not the backgrounds, which are often utilized to highlight the characters. But don’t be fooled by the brightness and silliness of the main characters and the eccentric events surrounding them. This is still a university, after all, and Giant Days doesn’t shy away from mentioning the real-life hazards of campus life. Anything from nicotine addiction to taking drugs could be and will be par for the course, as will the difference between feminism and man-hating. And, for those with Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR)? There’s a character with it. Represented, at last!

f you’ve read X-Men: The Return or you love Cinderella in the Fables series, then you probably like Chris Roberson’s work. In fact, if you’re a fan of the TV show “iZombie,” then you already know how relevant Roberson is with his comic book series, from which the show is loosely adapted. Gwen Dylan isn’t the luckiest girl in the world. While she tries to ﬁt in as much as she can with normal society, she constantly remembers that she isn’t human anymore. She’s no hero, she’s just a gravedigger with a strange diet. She’s a zombie that hates the taste of brains, her best friend is a ghost from the late 60s or early 70s, her other friend is a were-terrier, and she needs to solve the murder of the guy whose brains she just ate or his memories will keep on haunting her. Oh, and she has to deal with vampires and monster hunters, and one of those hunters is pretty cute. Roberson has created a world where the supernatural exists, whether they want to or not. Were-people are “infected”; it’s repeated that ghosts are unable to go on to what comes after and are stuck; and, to remain sane, other forms of the undead are forced to do acts that result in others’ death. All of this is made darker by the art style of Michael Allred, which more often than not mimics pop art. This all works with the type of story that one wouldn’t expect to come out of anything to do with zombies: a murder mystery. Even those tired of the zombie trend will love iZombie, which is a deﬁnite exception to the “typical” zombie tale.

Roche has published three poetry collections available from Foothills Publishing: The Joe Poems, Topicalities, and On Conesus. He also published a poetic memoir of the 60’s—Road Ghosts—published by theenk Books. INTELLIGENT DESIGN ■ Wired.com’s most recent “Absurd Creature” feature shows a toad devouring a larva of a muchsmaller beetle, but the “absurdity” is that the larva is in charge and that the toad will soon be beetle food. The larva’s Darwinian advantage is that, inside the toad, it bites the hapless “predator” with its hooked jaws and then secretes enzymes to begin decomposing the toad’s tissue (making it edible)—and provoking it to vomit the still-alive larva.

GREAT ACHIEVEMENTS LAZINESS

■ An 80-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman were ticketed in separate incidents in Canada the week of Jan. 18 when police spotted them driving cars completely caked in snow except for a small portion of the windshield. The man, from Brussels, Ontario, was driving a car resembling a “pile of snow on the road.” The Halifax, Nova Scotia, woman’s car was, a police statement said, “a snowbank with four wheels.”

GREAT ART! ■ Fed up with the “pretense” of the art world, performer (and radio personality) Lisa Levy of Brooklyn, New York, sat on a toilet, naked and motionless, at the Christopher Stout Gallery in January to protest artists’ “BS” by presenting herself in the “humblest” way she could imagine. Visitors were invited to sit on a facing toilet (clothed or not) and interact with her in any way except for touching. Levy told the Bushwick Daily website that too much “ego,” “like a drug,” “distorts your reality.”

WAIT, WHAT? ■ In January, the U.S. Department of Justice’s inspector general recommended closing down a program of the department’s Drug Enforcement Administration that paid employees of other federal agencies (Amtrak and the beloved Transportation Security Administration) for tips on suspicious passengers. (The program apparently ignored that federal employees have such a duty even without a bounty.) DEA was apparently interested in passengers traveling with large amounts of cash— which DEA could potentially seize if it suspected the money came from illegal activity (and also, of course, then keep the money under federal forfeiture law). According to the inspector general, the tipping TSA agent was to be rewarded with a cut of any forfeited money. ■ Chiropractor William DeAngelo of Stratford, Connecticut, was charged with assault in January after an employee complained that she was ordered to lie down on a table and let DeAngelo apply electrical shocks to her back—as punishment for being the office gossiper, spreading rumors about colleagues. DeAngelo said he was reacting

to complaints from patients and staff, but seemed to suggest in a statement to police that he was only “re-educating” the woman on how to use the electrical stimulator in the office’s practice (though she felt the need to report to a hospital afterward).

THE CONTINUING CRISIS ■ Britain’s North Yorkshire Police successfully applied to a judge in January for a “sexual risk order” against a man whose name was not disclosed publicly and whose alleged behavior was not revealed. Whoever he is and whatever he did, he is forbidden to enter into any sexual situation with anyone without providing at least 24 hours’ notice to the police—nor is he allowed to look at or possess any sexually oriented materials. According to the York Press, the order is temporary until May 19, at which time the magistrates may extend it.

BRIGHT IDEAS ■ Christopher Lemek Jr. was arrested in Palmer, Massachusetts, in January and charged in a New Year’s Eve hit-and-run accident that took a pedestrian’s life. Lemek emerged as a suspect a few days after the collision when police, visiting his home, noticed freshly disturbed earth in his backyard. Eventually Lemek confessed to literally burying the evidence—using a construction vehicle to crush his truck and an excavator to dig up his backyard and drop the truck into it. ■ No Need for a Pre-Nup: The 20-year New York marriage of Gabriel Villa, now 90, and Cristina Carta Villa, now 59, apparently had its happy moments, but as Cristina found out when things went bad recently, Gabriel had attempted to protect himself shortly after the wedding— by obtaining a Dominican Republic divorce and keeping it secret. Cristina found out only when she realized in a property accounting that her name was not on the deed to their Manhattan apartment. (She is challenging that divorce as improper even under Dominican law.)

SUSPICIONS CONFIRMED ■ Several Connecticut state troopers involved in a DUI checkpoint in September were apparently caught on video deliberating whether to make up charges against a (perhaps obnoxious) checkpoint monitor. Veteran protester Michael Picard, 27, posted the videos on his YouTube page in January, showing troopers (illegally) confiscating Picard’s camera and suggesting among themselves various charges they could write up (at least some not warranted by evidence) to, as one trooper was heard imploring, “cover our asses.” (The troopers returned the camera after deliberating, but seemed unaware that it had been running during the entire incident.) Raniere took $1.6 million from former NXIVM financial advisor and board member Barbara Bouchey and when she asked for it back tried to have her indicted for extortion. He and the Bronfmans also allegedly illegally hacked into her computer and stole banking, emails and phone records. Ironically Raniere and the Bronfman sisters charged Bouchey with hacking into a NXIVM computer. Defending herself against those charges drove Bouchey to bankruptcy and a near breakdown. The charges were dismissed last week but Bouchey will never recover her money or the years of stress the court case caused.

requent readers of Artvoice have seen our long running series The Cult of NXIVM. The series exposes over and over again that behind NXIVM’s so called executive coaching program is a world of lurid sex, powerful money, danger, vengeance and alleged criminality. At the center of it all, and the target of our articles, is Keith Raniere, the former TV infomercial conman turned self-proclaimed spiritual guru. Why would we repeatedly keep writing about the same subject? We keep writing about it because law enforcement still hasn’t taken action, because the courts still haven’t taken action, because no prosecuting attorney has taken action.

3. Raniere took $65.6 million from the Bronfman sisters and “lost” it all in commodities trading. However, there are evidently no records of the trades and Clare Bronfman told me she has no receipts documenting where any of the money went.

Sooner or later some ambitious District Attorney is going to realize that an investigation and indictment of Raniere and NXIVM will not only serve justice, it will also be a cornerstone to their career. The involvement of the Seagram’s fortune heiresses Clare and Sara Bronfman and the sensational sexual depravity and alleged criminal activity at NXIVM, means the prosecution of Keith Raniere will gain national and international press attention. It will catapult that prosecutor from unknown attorney to legal stardom. It’s difficult to believe that in spite of all that’s been written by investigative journalists in Forbes, Vanity Fair, Albany Times Union, NY Post, New York Observer, Village Voice, The Artvoice, WorldCultWatch.org and many other outlets NXIVM has apparently never been investigated by the FBI or the NY Attorney General. Keith Raniere has never had to answer for allegations of statutory rapes, unlawful imprisonment, suicides, money laundering and more. No law enforcement agency or court has questioned Raniere’s abusive manipulation of the court system in his relentless persecution of former NXIVM members. And the IRS has apparently never investigated Raniere or NXIVM in spite of all the shady money used, allegedly, for bribes, coercion, frivolous lawsuits, and the unaccounted millions of Bronfman dollars in Raniere’s control that simply disappeared, and the reported hidden movement of millions of dollars across the Mexican border. 4. Raniere took another $26 million from the Bronfman sisters for a real estate development that turned out to be a scam. The developer, who was Raniere’s personal friend, was the same man who acted as the broker in the purported commodities trades. I uncovered that he stole $10 million from the Bronfman sisters, which I caused to have recovered for them in court. Then Raniere fired me.

Chuck Schumer; the publisher and editor of the Albany Times Union; an investigative reporter at the Times Union and the personal and financial records of Rick Ross, a professional cult expert and deprogrammer and other adversaries. All of the federal judges were overseeing cases where NXIVM was suing some enemy.

5. Seagram heiress Clare W. Bronfman illegally planted a “key logger” virus on the computer of her own father, the late, billionaire, Edgar M. Bronfman Sr., so NXIVM could secretly monitor his emails, including his exchanges with world leaders and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. 6. Raniere/Bronfman/NXIVM Corp. have as many as 75 shell companies, including alleged fake charities, fictitious loans with phantom interest to disguise gifts [and avoid millions in gift taxes] to Raniere and appear to be engaged in a classic Klein Conspiracy to defraud the government. Raniere urges his followers not to pay taxes, according to numerous sources. 7. Raniere tried to lure to Mexico four women who left NXIVM so he could punish them. According to a former NXIVM member now in hiding and the mother of Raniere’s child “Keith intended these women serious, serious, emotional and phys-

NEWS | FEATURE ical harm.” Raniere is a very vengeful man who calls himself Vanguard. His favorite video game is also called Vanguard. It’s a game in which destroying enemies increases the fuel in the player’s tank. 8. Raniere offered to tutor the daughter of a woman who worked for him. Instead of teaching her Latin as he promised, Raniere had sex with the 12-year-old approximately 60 times in his townhouse, empty offices, an elevator, a broom closet, anywhere. The girl – who spoke on the record - was so in fear of him she ran away from home so she wouldn’t have to see him again. She reported the statutory rapes to the state police two years later when she was 14 years old. The police did nothing. 9. Kristen Snyder committed suicide. She left a note saying she was brainwashed by NXIVM.

10. Raniere was accused of having numerous illegal Mexicans working for him and Clare Bronfman. One source claimed he had an underage Mexican boy videotape him having sex with the boy’s sisters and other women. The children were entrusted into Raniere’s care by their parents. One of these women was imprisoned by Raniere in a room for two years, the woman herself claimed. She escaped and fled to Mexico.

11. Heidi Hutchinson confronted Raniere for having sex with Gina Hutchinson her underage sister, a sexual relationship that started after he raped her. The confrontation occurred when Heidi caught him crawling through Gina’s bedroom window. Raniere told her girl’s soul was much older than her biological age and continued to have sex with her. Gina was 15. She later went to a monastery in Woodstock and shot herself in the head. The sister said on the record that Raniere caused her sister’s death. Raniere also said in a chilling video that he has “had people killed because of his beliefs.”

We’ve already devoted a great deal of writing to Raniere’s sordid sex life. It’s an endless story. Simpson: American Crime Story, was the victim of an internet death hoax this week. Rumors of his death spread quickly on the internet over the weekend but on Monday his reps conﬁrmed that Vance was alive and well. Best known to TV audiences for his role in Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Vance made his Broadway debut in 1987 in August Wilson’s play Fences for which he received a Tony nomination. He eventually won a Tony in 2013 for his performance in Nora Ephron’s play Lucky Guy, which starred Tom Hanks. He was also nominated in 1991 for his role in John Guare’s Six Degrees of Separation. Vance turns 56 on March 12th. Speaking of Guare, Robert “Ernie” Insana has joined the cast of The House of Blue Leaves which is being presented by American Repertory Theatre of WNY in its new home at 330 Amherst St. Directed by Drew McCabe the production will also star Diane DiBernardo Blenk, Robert Ernie Insana, Scot A Kaitanowski, Maura Nolan, Mara Morris, Rick Lattimer, Virginia Brannon, Erica Lorenzetti, and Lisa Semper. The play will run March 10th-April 2nd. Alleyway Theatre’s Buffalo Quickies, the annual festival of short plays, turns 25 this year. All featured plays this year are by local playwrights: Black Friday by Jennifer Tromble, The Only Easy Day was Yesterday by Matthew Boyle, Bogie and Harold by Anna Kay France, Jack Pork by Donna Hoke, Swans in Winter by Mark C. Lloyd, Shirley vs. the Squirrels by Camilla Maxwell, Shoot the Weatherman by Mike Randall, and Wrath! by Winifred Storms & Jon Elston. Black Friday is the winner of this year’s Maxim Mazumdar new play competition. Musicalfare will kick off its 2016-17 season with one of the best musicals of all time, Gypsy, to be directed by Chris Kelly. The company ﬁrst produced the musical in the 1994-95 season. Before that, the company will present one of the great Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals, Evita with Marc Sacco as Che, John Fredo as Peron, and Michele Roberts in the title role. The Kavinoky Theatre has decided to postpone their production of Quartet until next year. Instead, in the April 29 - May 22 slot, they will stage the classic Frederick Knott thriller, Wait Until Dark. Don’t forget The Irish Classical Theatre Company’s annual fundraiser The Wake will take place on Friday March 4th from 7 to 10:30 p.m. at a new location, D’Arcy McGee’s Irish Pub. Next season ICTC will present Bryan Delaney’s The Seedbed, a family drama set in Ireland. Delaney scored great success when the company presented his play The Cobbler in 2005. Ellen Horst is making her Geva Theatre Center debut in Rochester appearing in Christopher Sergel’s adaptation of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, which is playing now through March 20th. The production also features Robert Rutland. By the way, Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of the classic novel is headed to Broadway and will open in the 2017-18 season. Sorkin’s previous Broadway plays include A Few Good Men and The Farnsworth Invention. Brian “Kato” Kaelin (pictured below) was staying at O.J. Simpson’s guesthouse the night of the murders of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman. He was a witness for the state during the 1994-95 Simpson murder trial. Billy Magnussen (Vanya and Sonya and Masha and Spike on Broadway and Rapunzel’s Prince in the ﬁlm of Into the Woods) plays Kaelin in FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson. After several attempts at an acting career, the soon to turn 57 Kaelin has his own clothing line, Slacker Wear.

resh from his unanimous endorsement by Democratic Party leaders last Saturday, Tonawanda Town Attorney John Flynn is chomping at the bit to get started on his primary campaign for Erie County district attorney against Acting DA Mike Flaherty and a former assistant district attorney, Mark Sacha. “We’re putting together a two-pronged team, one focused on strategy and leadership and the second on finance,” said Flynn, “and we should be ready to go within a week or two. I’ve already had many people approach me about wanting to contribute and hold fundraisers. The reception has been unbelievable.” While Flynn is getting his team lined up, Acting DA Flaherty is continuing to raise money with another fundraiser set for happy hour on Friday (Feb. 19) at Soho on Chippewa St. With Democratic State Committee operatives Jimmy Eagan and Rich Horner leading the way, Flaherty is expected to have a war chest of close to $400,000 at the next filing date. But Flynn’s popularity among party regulars and his long record of success in the Town of

Sedita, Jr. Erie County Republican Chairman Nick Langworthy has asked former State Attorney General Dennis Vacco to head up a search committee for a candidate for district attorney, but Langworthy has not ruled out anything in a presidential year where a heavy Democratic

Right now, Langworthy is focused on hosting the upcoming GOP state convention on Friday, March 4, at the Marriott Harbor Center, and letting the party know the local GOP “is getting things right, despite being down 2 to 1 in enrollment.” County Republicans control the legislature and hold the office of county comptroller. Erie County Conservative Party Chairman Ralph Lorigo, the longest sitting local party chairman (1995), has met with all of the Democratic hopefuls and they continue to attend his famous Lackawanna breakfast every Saturday in this political year headlined by the big race for district attorney.

While Flynn has served in many positions over the course of his career, including as a judge in Tonawanda and in Buffalo City Court and as a town councilman, he says he has only run for office twice in 13 years and that hardly qualifies him as a career politician or perennial candidate as has been suggested by Sacha and the Flaherty camp. Reacting to the Flynn endorsement by party leaders, Flaherty said in an interview that “I’m a career prosecutor, not a politician, and I can’t worry about what the [Democratic] executive committee did.” Flaherty says his

rie Community College has gone into damage and spin control now that the state audit has confirmed what I’ve been reporting for several months about how President Jack Quinn and his crew have run the college into the ground with big spending on senior staff, unauthorized job creation, and poor management practices, all conducted without any transparency. It looks like Quinn has made it through the audit crisis without much change with the only real casualty so far his $117,500 legal affairs chief, Kristin Klein Wheaton, whose resignation gave county lawmakers the scapegoat they needed to back off on Quinn, and they have, at least so far. We hear her job has already been posted, giving Quinn another plum appointment, replacing Wheaton who acted pretty much as his inside hatchet man (or woman, in this case). Now another politician who had to be embarrassed by the audit report, County Executive Mark Poloncarz, is trying to show the public that he is tightening the county’s oversight of the public college with a series of requests contained in a letter to Quinn. In his letter, the county executive says he wants a list of titles, salaries, and starting dates for all senior staff for 2015 and 2016 “as well as any additional pay/stipend, cash bonuses, dues for clubs, parking privileges, travel or hospitality allowance, 24-hour or daytime access to

Asked about the Poloncarz requests, ECC Board Chairman Steve Boyd said “I directed President Quinn to provide the requested information. We were criticized in the audit for transparency issues and I see no reason not to fulfill his request.” Boyd said he would have to confer with the other members of the board on the four-year plan, saying “we have a very active Strategic and Assessment Committee chaired by Vice Chair Dennis Murphy. Dennis is also leading the blue ribbon panel that will develop our response to the audit,” that is due April 14th. Boyd, who is expected to leave as chairman in June, said he knows the college needs more support and “we’ll work with the county to the extent provided we can,” noting that under State Education Law and

The county executive would also like to see a 10 member (5 from county, 5 ECC) planning committee established to “better address the needs of the college and the greater community.” Sources at the college say the mood has improved among workers but many are still suspicious that Quinn and company have gotten away with what they have done over the last several years despite the strong audit, and that so far county officials have not really come down hard enough on the administration to make a difference. We’ll keep you posted.

Erie County currently kicks in about 15.6 percent (less than $18 million) of the ECC budget, a contribution that is far below the 26.7 percent of the budge it should be providing under the state’s community college funding formula. Since then, members of Pussy Riot have continued their activism through public performances as well as open forums, discussing subjects ranging from the black lives matter movement, LGBT rights, women’s rights, censorship, and more. Most recently, they have founded and are touring to raise funds in support of the Zona Prava campaign, which helps prisoners deprived of liberty and adequate treatment while in conﬁnement. After the release of 91’s Butchered At Birth and 92’s Tomb Of The Mutilated, they gained a cult following which has grown and catapulted them into the realm of international stardom. 2009’s Evisceration Plague and 2012’s Torture have garnered global acclaim and their most recent album, Skeletal Remains, hit the Billboard Top 40 upon its release. A Metal Hammer UK article in 2009 even declared: “Cannibal Corpse are the biggest death metal band in the world”.
