BRUSHING UP
SOUTH DAKOTA “PANORAMA”
Dalton Coffey filming Dr. Craig Howe for the CAIRNS Takuwe exhibition video.
Taking a look at South Dakota artists from a new point of view, filmmaker Dalton Coffey has created “Panorama,” airing on South Dakota Public Broadcasting. Subjects range from musicians Jami Lynn and Bryan Akipa to hoop dancers Starr and Dallas Chief Eagle to filmmaker Andrew Kightlinger. “There are few things that I find more interesting than artists and what and how they create,” Coffey says in the intro to the series. “Great art is made by artists, but discovered by everyone else,” Coffey says.
“Everybody has a channel to get to art. I get to use all forms of creative media – music, words, images – and the final product can evolve at every step in the process.” The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, Faulkton’s murals, Mark Zimmerman and Mary Wipf, and Dr. Craig Howe, director of the Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies are also featured in the video vignettes. The videos are hosted on Arts South Dakota’s YouTube channel and on the website, artssouthdakota.org/panorama.
