Governor\u2019s Biennial exhibition opens at South Dakota Art Museum

The South Dakota Governor’s 8th Biennial Art Exhibition, featuring works from 64 South Dakota artists, begins its statewide tour at the South Dakota Art Museum in Brookings now through April 20.

Jodi Lundgren, South Dakota Art Museum curator of exhibitions, served as one of the four jurors who reviewed 298 entries from 112 artists in a blind jurying process. Established in 2003, the Governor’s Biennial Art Exhibition recognizes South Dakota artists, promotes the artistic identity of South Dakota, celebrates the cultural and artistic heritage of South Dakota and encourages a larger sense of community and connection across separate artistic communities within the state.

The exhibition is organized through the collaborative efforts of staff at four South Dakota exhibiting institutions. After being displayed at the Art Museum, the show will travel to the Dahl Arts Center, Rapid City, May 3 through August 17; the John A. Day Gallery at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, August 30 through October 11, and the Visual Arts Center at the Washington Pavilion, Sioux Falls, October 26 though January 19, 2020.

“Blinded by a Vision,” a 2017 48” by 60” oil on canvas work by Luke Gorder of Rapid City, is included in the Governor’s 8th Biennial Art Exhibition.

The biennial exhibitions are a snapshot of the tremendous quality and unique diversity of artistic creativity within the state at a specific time.
