! from$ fine$ art$ sculptures$ made$ of$ marble$ or$ cast$in$bronze.$The$lawn$ornament$becomes$ a$watered$down$version$of$the$original.$ In$ some$ respects$ my$ work$ deals$ with$ this$ idea$ of$ the$ fine$ art$ verses$ the$ commercial$ and$decorative$art,$which$is$why$I$enjoy$the$ format$ of$ the$ ice$ sculpture$ and$ lawn$ ornament$for$some$of$my$pieces.$ What$is$your$best$environment$to$create$art?$ A$room$with$many$large$windows$with$either$ a$movie$I$have$seen$a$million$times,$music,$or$ NPR$in$the$background.$ What, do, you, hope, viewers, will, experience, from,your,work?, I$ have$ a$ friend$ in$ the$ medical$ field,$ admittedly$ not$ much$ acquainted$ with$ art$ that$ recently$ saw$ my$ work.$ I$ had$ created$ a$ piece$ using$ Sarah$ Palin$ as$ Diana,$ and$ she$ commented,$ “Why$ did$ you$ use$ her?$ I$ hate$ her.”$ This$ is$ not$ the$ reaction$ I$ am$ going$ for$ with$ my$ work.$ I$ realize$ that$ some$ viewers$ see$ my$ work$ as$ me$ favoring$ the$ celebrity,$
politician,$or$sports$figure$I$am$representing.$ This$is$not$the$case$at$all.$For$me,$I$am$trying$ on$the$simplest$level$to$say$that$whether$you$ love$or$hate$these$figures$they$have$become$ important$ to$ our$ culture.$ Just$ like$ the$ ancient$myths,$they$are$a$common$story$that$ most$everyone$is$aware$of$and$can$discuss.$I$ think$ in$ our$ culture,$ and$ especially$ when$ prominent$figures$are$being$commemorated,$ that$ we$ try$ to$ preserve$ the$ most$ noble$ and$ respectable$aspects$of$people$and$life$at$this$ time.$ On$ the$ other$ hand$ when$ you$ look$ at$ magazines$ and$ the$ Internet$ it$ is$ not$ always$ these$virtuous$stories$that$prevail,$but$rather$ the$ trivial$ lives$ and$ scandals$ of$ public$ icons.$ In$this$sense$I$am$trying$to$preserve$what$is$ really$ at$ the$ forefront$ of$ our$ culture$ in$ the$ more$ permanent$ and$ substantial$ sculptural$ form.$ Overall$ this$ is$ what$ I$ hope$ to$ address$ in$ this$ body$ of$ work$ but$ each$ piece$ addresses$other$issues$as$well.$
Who, is, your, favorite, artist, and, why?, Any, old,masters,in,particular,that,you,enjoy?, My$ favorite$ piece$ is$ Marina$ Abramović's$ “Rhythm$ 0.”$ I$ think$ that$ this$ piece$ is$ very$ powerful$ in$ the$ reaction$ of$ the$ audience$ b$ I$ appreciate$ work$ that$ relies$ more$ on$ the$ viewer’s$ reaction$ and$ interpretation.$ As$ far$ as$masters$are$concerned,$it$may$or$may$not$ be$ evident$ to$ some$ in$ my$ work$ that$ I$ favor$ the$ great$ sculptors$ Michelangelo,$ Bernini,$ and$Canova.$ What,is,your,dream,project?, I$ have$ wanted$ to$ create$ a$ piece$ with$ Brad$ Pitt$ and$ Angelina$ Jolie$ for$ some$ time,$ however,$ I$ envision$ it$ being$ very$ large$ and$ involved$ and$ currently$ I$ do$ not$ have$ the$ space$to$accommodate$making$it.$ What,would,you,tell,other,aspiring,painters,, any,advice?, Keep$making/$doing$and$investigating.$ $
