Maisy’s Chair Patricia Haley-Tsui Painting There is a petit garden shop in an alley of Hastings Street operated by 64 year-old Wendy for 25 years now. The southfacing shop is under an overhang, squeezed between two warm walls. It reminds one of a Parisian covered courtyard. For many years, a fixture, there was Maisy, an elderly customer who shopped for entertainment. She came as frequently as four or five times weekly. She always purchased something and would sit there a long time. The chair Maisy used to sit in was often used by Wendy as a step ladder, so Wendy purchased a used kitchen chair, refinished it, and introduced it to Maisy. Maisy loved to come to the shop and sit in her own chair, looking at the brightly coloured flowersa pleasure she gradually became deprived of due to advancing macular degeneration ...until she was gone. But Maisy’s chair remains.... 27
