Fundraising Dinner & Auction
bout
The Arts Foundation is a registered charity that supports individual artists and creatives in the UK with unconditional financial Fellowships through the Arts Foundation Futures Awards. We champion the contemporary arts and believe that creative practice is integral to the well-being of society and a human right.
Since 1993 the Arts Foundation has awarded over £1.8 million to the most promising artists in the UK at a pivotal moment in their careers to enable them to concentrate on their creative development, experiment, and realise their artistic potential.
The annual Arts Foundation Futures Awards provides five transformative £10,000 Fellowships, with all shortlisted artists receiving £1,000 towards the development of their artistic practice. Each year the awards focus on broad and innovative art forms across Craft, Design, Film, Literature, Music, New Media, Performing Arts, and Visual Arts.
The vital contribution of the Arts Foundation Futures Awards to the arts in the UK is demonstrated by its past Fellows, many of whom are regarded as contemporary pioneers and have gone on to become leaders in their respective art forms, including: Wayne McGregor (1994), Alice Oswald (1996), Sarah Kane (1998), Asif Kapadia (2001), Ali Smith (2001), Rufus Norris (2002), Carol Morley (2003), Lynette Yiadom-Boakye (2006), and more recently, Simon Fujiwara (2009), Sam Lee (2011), Alice Birch (2014), Hollie McNish (2015), Evan Ifekoya (2017), Holly Hendry (2019), Onyeka Igwe (2020), Klein (2020), and Bethany Williams (2020).

Given ongoing precarity across the arts and culture sector, and with demand and need never greater in the cost of living crisis, we feel it is essential to continue to provide financial assistance to artists and creative practitioners at a pivotal moment in their career trajectories.
We are always greatly encouraged and inspired by the ingenuity and often experimental, interdisciplinary practices of all the Fellows and artists we support each year. We have no doubt their respective work will have a significant impact on our collective cultural life for many decades to come.
This auction offers outstanding works of art and unique experiences that have been donated with the future of progressive arts in mind. Your generosity will help us continue to support exceptional independent artistic and creative talent in the UK, their future development and their vital contribution to society.

“The £10,000 Fellowship has transformed my career as a visual artist in myriad ways. From the effect that such a substantial and sudden injection of capital has had on my mental well-being, providing me for the first time since leaving home with a solid, financial safety net, to the sense of validation and boost in confidence that the accolade of becoming a Fellow has afforded me.”

Lee Hart
“My work has been developed patiently over long periods, by working within communities and spending time together. I’m most grateful that the Arts Foundation chose to shine a light on theatre makers who are inspired to work in this way. The money was a huge help, easing the anxiety that is so often there humming away in the background around ‘how am I going to pay my rent next month.’ To be able to live more openly and courageously as ideas are explored.”

Ambassador & Short Story Writing Fellow, 2001
Hotel World, 2001
Ali Smith’s personal, original and travelling reading copy of Hotel World, first edition and first printing, 2001. Including a beautiful personal note from the renowned author.
Five people: four are living, three are strangers, two are sisters, one is dead. In her highly acclaimed and ambitious book, Ali Smith brings alive five unforgettable characters and traces their intersecting lives. This is a short novel with big themes (time, chance, money, death) but an eye for tiny detail: the taste of dust, the weight of a few coins in the hand, the pleasurable pain of a stone in one’s shoe ...

Fellow Testimonial
Rufus Norris
Ambassador & Theatre Directing Fellow, 2002
“It certainly had the most profound effect on my career because it did exactly what it was meant to do. In that it brought me time, time to follow my own initiative, my own instinct rather than trying to persuade anyone else that I could follow theirs.
In that year I laid the foundation, of my own art for projects which took me, rung by rung, towards what has for some years been a very compelling and fortunate way to spend a working life. So, I for one am eternally grateful.”

Joanna Pocock
“Apart from a laptop, the only other major requirement for my writing is time. This is both the most precious and the most difficult to obtain and is without a doubt the single most important gift for a writer. The depth of thinking and the extra time for writing that has come with this award have been absolutely invaluable.
This generous award really has been the difference between getting a first draft to my publisher and not. It is as simple as that. I hope this book, when it wends its way out into the world, might go some ways towards helping us rethink how to design a sustainable future.”
Environmental Writing Fellow, 2021
