The Actor’s Journal
How will I learn?
You will undertake independent research, reflection and analysis which may involve many different forms including further reading, writing, painting, drawing, performance. In Term 1 you will take part in tutor and student-led research seminars, examining different perspectives from which to view your process and training.

How will I be assessed?
You will be summatively assessed on your written and performance work according to the learning outcomes above. A mix of random and selected work will be double marked. The individual marks for the 3 Critical Appraisal exercises form the total for the Reflection module. The marks are allocated as follows: Critical Appraisal 1 –30%; Critical Appraisal 2 – 70%;
What will the assessors be looking for?
Assessment Criteria: • Ability to structure essay argument /reflection and performance provocation • Depth and originality of investigation whether in reflective performance or written reflection • Ability to evidence statements and observations made • Evidence of changed practice and openness to revising ideas • Use of and ability to draw upon multiple perspectives • Clarity and rigour of written and performance language • Ability to choose and integrate theatrical forms relevant to your investigation or performance provocation • Evidence of rigorous, objective and honest analysis of process • Ability to critically evaluate and incorporate key practitioners and theorists

Outline
The Actor’s Journal is a narrative of the dynamic between the technical and taught areas of the programme and your own personal growth and management strategies. They offer you an opportunity for objective analysis and immediate structured reflection on your learning process and creative discoveries as you progress through the programme.
What will I be expected to achieve?
On successful completion of the module you will be expected to be able to: Skills • analyse, reflect on, and critique each unit of the course, and the effect on you as a performer in an objective and developmental manner
Knowledge and understanding • demonstrate a comprehensive ability to analyse and reflect on your own working process • demonstrate advanced knowledge about current practitioners and productions and contemporary developments in theatre practice • demonstrate understanding of the actor’s craft that enables you to critically evaluate practice in the field. Values and Attitudes • articulate your responses to the work of others without judgement • show the developing nature of your struggle to become a strong, self-confident, creative person of independent and critical thought
How will I learn?
You will undertake independent research, reflection, analysis and writing. This process is supported through the Critical Appraisal seminar sessions in Term 1.
How will I be assessed?
Each term you will keep a journal in which you will log your feelings and discoveries throughout your classwork, projects, and performances. The journals are not marked independently but may be required for cross-referencing purposes in the assessment of the Critical Appraisals. The content of your Actor’s Journals does not contribute to any part of your final mark.

What do I have to do to pass the module?
You are required to pass The Actor’s Journal and achieve a mark of 50% or above for each of the Critical Appraisals. The overall mark for the module is calculated according to the weightings given in the table above. The Reflection module carries a weighting of 10% of your overall mark for the degree.
How will I get feedback on my assessments?
You will be given written feedback on each of your Critical Appraisals.
