Summer School of Performing Arts The Summer School of Performing Arts offers the chance for 8-16 year olds to learn and refine performance skills in acting, movement and music through classes, workshops and performance. There will be a number of general acting and movement classes to develop more awareness of: General acting techniques, body language and gesture, the dynamic range of the voice, creating a character and learning improvisation techniques, stage discipline and creativity and working as a team. There will also be two 75-minute workshops concentrating on specific aspects of performance. Voice and Stagecraft – including projection, accents and knowing your way around the stage Who am I? - a look at characterisation and living in the moment, including some movement and song. PERFORMANCE This year our show is going to introduce the new streaming service QUAYFLIX – Sudbury’s answer to Netflix, with excerpts from a host of shows including MIDSOOMER MURDERS – the new Scandi-Noir series, the Q SHOPPING CHANNEL, the new arts spectacular JAWS THE MUSICAL MEETS “GOOSE”LAKE and HORRIBLE HISTORIES DO SHAKESPEARE. Expect the unexpected in a show that will be largely comic (so we expect the audience to laugh!) There will be TWO performances and they will take place on Friday and Saturday at 6.30pm on the Quay Theatre stage. All the students will be involved in the performance and have opportunities to sing, dance and act. Tickets for the show will be on sale for £6.00 Adult and £4.00 Child. By Dylan Thomas In an energetic and lively version of this classic play, share one spring day, from dawn until dusk, with the inhabitants of the small, Welsh fishing town of Llareggub. Meet the local characters, some bizarre, some grotesque and learn of their dreams and desires. Above all, wallow in Thomas’ funny, sad, inventive, beautiful and joyous mastery of language. ‘Time passes. Listen. Time passes. Come closer now’.
Martin Carthy is a ballad singer, a groundbreaking acoustic and electric guitarist and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. He always prefers to follow an insatiable musical curiosity rather than cash in on his unrivalled position.
This amateur production is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD., a Concord Theatricals Company.

PREMIERE: Gainsborough & The Modern Woman Woven Theatre Company Fri 13th & Sat 14th May - 7.30pm Tickets: £13 / Students £10 A play by Peppy Barlow and Sally Wilden. In 1760, not long after Gainsborough had moved his family to Bath, he painted a portrait of an extraordinary young woman, Ann Ford, as a way of advertising his trade. Ann was a talented musician. She was twice arrested by her father to prevent her performing in public but went on to earn £1500 (about £299,000 in today’s money) and made herself an independent woman. The play is about the making of this painting and the relationship between painter and subject. There are all kinds of local connections – notably with Gainsborough’s birthplace in Sudbury where his family worked in cloth. For this production, two of Sudbury’s present day silk weavers, Stephen Walters and Richard Matthews, are providing the silk for the dress and having it specially woven to match the design in the portrait. This will coincide with Steven Walters 300th anniversary! When displayed the portrait took Gainsborough’s world by storm. Prepared to break the rules about how a woman should be portrayed, it was a cause of outrage but put a seal on Gainsborough’s growing reputation. The painting was kept by Ann Ford Thicknesse until her death in 1824 and kept in her family until it was sold at auction. It is now displayed at the Cincinnati Museum of Art who have kindly given us permission to use the image. This production is supported by the Arts Council, Suffolk County Council and Sudbury Town Council. We are also working in partnership with the Pimlott Foundation and the Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service at Christchcurch Mansion Ipswich.

This classic fairytale represents the battle between good and evil, and the attempt of love to conquer all. The magic of the lakes, forests and palaces is brought to life with glittering designs by John Macfarlane and a sublime score by Tchaikovsky. The Royal Ballet’s sumptuous production of Swan Lake returns to the Royal Opera House stage after its 2020 revival was interrupted by the pandemic’s closure of theatres. This classic of the repertory is testament to the late choreographer Liam Scarlett’s abiding love of classicism and innate musicality, which shine through this production.

The late Jake Thackray is one of the greatest English songwriters of the twentieth century a unique talent, whose songs are full of humour, poetry, wit, irreverence and humanity. John Watterson is Jake’s biographer and the UK’s leading performer of Jake’s songs. As Fake Thackray he has toured with Fairport Convention, played at many festivals, theatres, clubs and on national radio. John has recently uncovered 15 wonderful songs written by Jake but never released . These songs, along with never-before told stories from the biography plus several much-loved Jake classics, feature in John’s new show - a celebration of the life and songs of one of this country’s finest wordsmiths.
Age 6 and under Sammy Ragdoll hasn’t seen her best friend Eddy the Teddy for a while so she decides that she will take him out for the day as a treat. Eddy is very excited and is very easily distracted by all the things he sees. The problem is he tends to wander off and before long they become separated and Eddy is lost, a long way from home. Eddy meets many animals and asks for their help. However, they all have their limitations. Chris Rabbit is too timid, Warren Rabbit can’t bounce high enough to see and Patsy Pigeon can’t remember anything for more than a few seconds. Will Eddy find Sammy and get back home?

Happy Sounds Community Choir & Shanty Folk

This is a fundraiser for the Quay Theatre. Happy Sounds is a Community Choir, based in Assington, near Sudbury. Formed in January 2019 by voice coach Nettie Osman, the Choir performs regularly to raise funds for local charities. This year's charity, the Quay Theatre, supported members with rehearsal space during lockdown. Expect a mixture of popular songs from the Beatles to Ed Sheeran, plus some Jubilee nostalgia! Support act ShantyFolk have built a large repertoire of shanties and songs of the sea, performing at many venues including The Apex, Bury St Edmunds. Last October they made their debut at the Harwich International Shanty Festival.
A celebration and tribute to Sandy Denny's defining role in British Folk-Rock Music, Julie July Band make their debut performance at The Quay. They have built a substantial reputation with reinterpretations and arrangements of the work of singer-songwriter Sandy Denny. In Sandy’s brief career she left a legacy of beautiful, haunting original and traditional compositions. Richard Thompson called her the greatest artist of her generation. Inspired by Sandy’s work and the wider folk, rock and blues movements of the Sixties and Seventies. The band will also perform songs from their own self-penned Albums 'Lady of the First Light' and 'Wonderland'.

Charlie Haylock will give an intriguing and hilarious behind-the-scenes look of the Netflix film The Dig about the famous Sutton Hoo burial ship. He will show how Ralph Fiennes, who played Basil Brown, learned his Suffolk accent and the extreme lengths he took, not only to play Basil Brown . . . but to become Basil Brown.
Armed with only a drum, a guitar, a knife and a chair, this inventive, irreverent and highly accessible one-man show is presented to you from the point of view of Lear’s long suffering and ever-loyal fool. The bastard Edmund, haughty Goneril, poor deluded Gloucester, oily Oswald, sweet Cordelia, mad Tom – all the characters from this sad and sorry tale are brought to glorious life in this fast-paced, funny, poignant and ultimately heartbreaking production. Adapted & performed by Paul Morel and directed by John Mowat with all of Oddbodies’ trademark physical ingenuity and visual flair, this is an unmissable reworking of one of Shakespeare’s most brilliant plays.

Remi Harris: Jazz & Blues Project

Acclaimed guitarist Remi Harris and his band present an eclectic show featuring music ranging from the acoustic jazz of the 30s and 40s to the electric blues of the 60s and 70s; influenced by such greats as Django Reinhardt, Jimi Hendrix, Peter Green and Wes Montgomery.
Formed in 1977 by guitarist Brian Bath, drummer Vic King, bassist Del Palmer and Kate Bush on vocals and piano. They played classic soul and rock covers, Brian's original songs and many of Kate's songs. The band played well-known London venues, performing "James and the Cold Gun", "Them Heavy People" and "Oh To Be In Love" long before they were released by Kate Bush. Fast forward 40 years and Brian now performs the music of Kate Bush, along with fascinating anecdotes plus many original KT Bush Band songs. Brian is joined by talented new members Sallie-Anne Hurst (vocals), Steve Bevan (bass), Emily Francis (keys) and Chase Aitch (drums).
Remi will be playing a variety of acoustic and electric guitars and will be joined by Tom Moore on double and electric bass and Shane Dixon on drums.

Well-known all over the World, Foreigner and Journey are giants of Adult Orientated Rock and have been huge draws as live acts since forming in the 1970’s. Unfortunately, there haven’t been many opportunities to see them in the UK but thankfully the next best thing is here - A Foreigners Journey! Cherry-picking the very best songs from each of the two bands, bonafide rock classics such as ‘Don’t Stop Believing’, ‘Separate Ways’, ‘Cold As Ice’, ‘Juke Box Hero’ Waiting For A Girl Like You and ‘I Want To Know What Love Is, A Foreigners Journey take things much beyond a mere ‘tribute act’ and perform a living, breathing and powerful show.

Kakatsitsi are a group of traditional drummers, dancers and singers from the Ga tribe of Southern Ghana, with their roots in the fishing community of Jamestown, Accra. Their music takes traditional rhythms and chants from their own Ga tradition and those of a variety of other West African cultures, rearranging them in a modern and accessible way. Since 1996, Kakatsitsi have toured the UK 15 times, working with a wide variety of festivals, arts centres and local authorities. The recent addition of a strong dance element has established Kakatsitsi as the leading African traditional group in the UK, with the leading Ga singers, drummers and dancers among their number.
