This exhibition focuses on using the medieval technique of painting on glass. The compositions arise as a result of the process: with each application of paint the composition unfolds. Washes of water and paint particles remain in constant flux for indefinite periods until the image is deemed complete. The glass is then fired for permanent fusion between image and glass. The final pieces capture the chance marks and movements of making.

Wartime and Embroidery Exhibition “Calm During the Storm: Wartime and Embroidery” is a new exhibition from the Embroiderers Guild, displayed in Abbots Hall at the Museum of East Anglian Life from January 17th to June 28th 2015. Using both historical and contemporary pieces, this poignant exhibition portrays the role of needlework, especially embroidery, as a calming influence in troubled times and links it to personal experiences. The exhibition covers both world wars with pieces ranging from small embroideries such as postcards, a tea cosy and handkerchiefs, to artefacts such as sweetheart pincushions produced by disabled servicemen. There are also Penelope needlework kits designed especially for servicemen from His Majesty’s Forces during World War II as well as pieces made by those left behind on the Home Front.

Satire without fear Gainsborough's House is currently playing host to an exhibition of work by eighteenth-century satirist Samuel William Fores. Mark Bills, Director of Gainsborough’s House says: 'In the eighteenth century, visitors to London from the Continent were shocked to see the outrageous cartoons of the British Royal family shown openly in print shop windows for all to see. In Europe they would have almost certainly faced prison. Our current exhibition of Samuel Fores shows how caricature was produced and used and that everyone was a potential target. It is extraordinary that in the

century that satirists are the targets of terrorists. Cartoons and caricature developed in London as entertainment, moral censure and scurrilous attacks. It spread throughout the rest of Europe and has been an important part of a vent for society.'

Design a Cover Competition Back in our December/ January issue we launched a competition asking people to design their very own ARTSeast cover. We were thrilled at how many people took part and have really enjoyed looking at all the entries. And now we can finally announce the winner - Elspeth Rushbrook and her work entitled Shuck and Seamonsters. Elspeth wins a fantastic prize of £125 worth of art supplies including sketching pencils, artist coloured pencils, watercolour pencils, watercolours complete with suitable brushes and a sketchbook, plus a set of acrylics with brushes and paper. Congratulations on a fantastic cover Elspeth. Here we find out more about Elspeth and the inspiration behind her cover design:

Elspeth is an artist, writer, speaker and composing musician from East Anglia. ' This is a view from behind the Black Shuck’s head – the dog that is said to haunt around Cromer and Sheringham (and Bungay too),' says Elspeth. 'In fact, a similar dog is claimed by much of the wilder natural spots of the country. Many will know him as a devil dog, but I heard an alternative: that he is a preparer not cause of death, and that he protects and warns. I also thought about how the fearful legend might serve as a form of social control. Shuck’s looking out to sea to a movable bump – for Cromer, like much of the world, has had a seamonster sighting. It made me think about our response to the supernatural, the cryptozoological, how we ridicule and fear what’s beyond our experience.' To see more of Elspeth's work go to Elspeth Rushbrook

The intention of open studios is to encourage the public to come and visit artists to see what they do, how they do it and what inspires them in the setting of their own ateliers. Tom Lund-Lack has chaired SOS since 2009 and would love to grow the membership. 'The more members we have the more we can do on their behalf to promote the great art that is being produced by artists in Suffolk,' says Tom. 'This year we have 128 artists taking part covering a wide range of art / media – 2D and 3D paintings and drawings using all kinds of media, printmaking, textiles, glasswork, ceramics, photography, mosaics, and jewellery. Getting to visit an artist’s studio is simple. Each year we publish a free colour directory which contains all of our exhibiting artists, where they are located and when they will be open. Open studios takes place every weekend in June. Following a trail is great fun especially when combined with a stopover in one of the many wonderful pubs and restaurants along the way. From May18th-31st, Art About Town helps artists place their work in friendly business premises as a means of helping them promote their work prior to the June open studios month. February 2015 | 15

Coffee & aChat In the run up to political drama The Absence of War arriving in Norwich, ARTSeast caught up with leading man Reece Dinsdale...

It's clear to see that Reece Dinsdale loves his job as an actor. It's a dream he's held since the age of 12 when he was forced into the lead role in a school production of Tom Sawyer. 'From out of nowhere, I discovered I had an ability to act and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience,' says Reece. At first, his traditional Yorkshire parents weren't convinced. 'I remember them asking me who around here becomes an actor,' laughs Reece. 'But as soon as they realised I was serious, they supported me 100%.' When I speak to Reece in early January, he's just started rehearsing The Absence of War and is currently immersed in learning the history of the Labour Party. 'The Absence of War is a great political drama based around a fictitious Labour Party Election Campaign,' says Reece. 'I play George Jones, the party leader. It's a huge role and I can't wait to get my teeth into it.’ The Absence of War is embarking on a timely tour of the country in the run up to the 2015 General Election. It arrives at Norwich Theatre Royal on February 24th.

'It's a great show to watch just as we're all about to put our political hats on,' says Reece. 'It's a fantastic look at an election campaign and is both haunting and funny at the same time.' To date, Reece's career has seen him act in a wide variety of roles in both TV, film and theatre. 'I was lucky enough to work with John Thaw very early on in my career on a show called Home to Roost and I've never

So, what is Reece most proud of in his career to date? 'In the mid 1990s I played the leading role in a film called ID about the demise of an undercover policeman who turns into a football hooligan,' says Reece. 'It's a great film and I was thrilled to win the International Critics Award for best actor for my portrayal. I'm also very proud of my role in the awardwinning BBC series Conviction and of my part in the BAFTA award-winning docudrama Threads.'

Kid’s Corner: Theatre Royal Norwich Theatre Royal is renowned throughout the region for the excellent quality of both its shows and the venue itself. But how does it fare as a place to take children? Clutching our cutlasses (and with my 4-year-old daughter Elsie inexplicably dressed as Mrs Christmas) we headed to see this year's pantomime - Peter Pan. It's one of our 6-year-old son Archie's favourite stories so to say he was excited would be an understatement. And from the moment the lights went up, he was captivated. In fact, we all were. Beccles Public Hall and Theatre has been operating as a community-owned venue for two years this month since its opening on February 19th 2013. It's a real achievement as it wasn't long ago, its future looked very bleak indeed. Back in 2011, there was a rallying call to the community for volunteers to come forward and help save the hall. At the time, it was running at a £14,000 a year loss and something had to happen to turn that around. 'We all feared that the site could be sold, redeveloped and lost forever,' said Hall Director John Cushing. With the support of local district councillor, Graham Elliot, - and many local people including Hall Director Terry Dentith - the building was bought by Beccles Lido Limited (BLL) in 2013. BLL is a registered charity that had already managed to save the ailing Beccles Lido and restore it to its former glory. Now the same needed to happen the beautiful eighteenth century hall. Since then a renovation programme has turned the hall around. Asbestos has been removed, the roof has been strengthened, the heating system made more efficient and the outside of the building has been renovated and painted. Major internal renovations are 38 |

Grumpy Old Man at Beccles Hall WCB (Weird Coastal Buoys' Comedy) presents Arthur Smith plus guests Saturday 14th March 2015 at 8pm One of Britain's most popular comedians is set to star at a comedy evening at Beccles Public Hall. Arthur Smith is well known for his sardonic presence on television's "Grumpy old Men" but he is renowned as an elder statesman of the alternative comedy scene frequently headlining shows across the UK. It won't be Arthur's first trip to East Anglia. Back in the 1970s Arthur studied at the UEA where he was chairman of the poetry society and wrote for the student newspaper. After graduating in 1976 with a degree in Comparative Literature, Arthur set off to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with a group of fellow UEA performers.
