WELCOME TO
THE FISHER THEATRE If winter comes, can spring be far behind? To ward off the winter blues, we’re introducing Cellar Nights once a month, with either a soloist or small group of musicians playing in a relaxed and informal style in the cellar. In March the cellar will host a night of poetry to celebrate World Poetry Day as a spoken word Open Mic. Come along and share some of your favourites. We bring you the charismatic Argentine Tenor Ale Martin who promises to be unforgettable on 21st January with music from popular opera sung with passion. On 17th Feb the fabulous singer-songwriter Mark Nevin, a founder member of Fairground Attraction and collaborator and co-writer for Morrissey, Kirsty MacColl and Lloyd Cole performs. He loves Suffolk so come along and make sure he comes more often. In March we have touring theatre; a WW1 play that portrays war through the eyes of a simple ‘Tommy’. The wonderful Giles Shenton, actor in ‘Old Herbaceous’, who got a standing ovation here, brings another one-hander – My Dog Has No Nose! Over Easter, UpShoot bring you ‘Bricks and Mortals’, their own play devised from Norfolk Myth, Legend and Folk Tales, based at the Brickyard behind Holkham Hall, where they tour in the summer. The ever popular and brilliant Hazel O’Connor returns to The Fisher with a new tour. The show is longer and she does a meet and greet at the end. In April we have something new for the Fisher, a piece of playback theatre attached to a production called I AM BEAST by Sparkle & Dark. ‘A visually stunning exploration of the power of grief and imagination, using UV landscapes, live music and puppetry.’ This promises to be unique and moving. Along with these exciting highlights we have a full programme of cinema, dance and fitness classes, live and encore streams from the National Theatre, Royal Opera House, Metropolitan Opera and Bolshoi Ballet and some really great talks. ABOUT US The Fisher Theatre, in Broad Street, Bungay, is one of the oldest provincial theatres in the UK. It is more than just a theatre, it has spaces available to hire for stage shows, events, meetings, conferences, art exhibitions and parties. There are also three separate areas licensed for Weddings and Civil Ceremonies.

The Fisher Theatre is a registered not-for-profit charity and receives no on-going revenue funding. The running costs of the building, productions, staffing and maintenance are met solely from income.

Supporting the Fisher Theatre:
There are many ways to support the Fisher Theatre, which is a not-for-profit Charity. We need volunteers to help us with various aspects of running the theatre, all of which can be fun to do and quite unlike many other sorts of volunteering.
VOLUNTEERING: Volunteers are active in helping in the following areas of ushering, box office, café/bar work, prepping, cooking, serving, setting up events, clearing up after events, hanging exhibitions, publicity, delivering programmes, putting up posters, helping with mail-outs, technical, administration, book-keeping, running promotional stalls, fundraising, building upkeep, improving the building. If you are interested please email: info@fishertheatre.org You might like to join one of our two schemes, which provide regular fundraising for the theatre, if you don’t have the time to volunteer.
FISHER THEATRE LOTTERY: When you join, you pay £2 a month, which is set-up by standing order. Each month two numbers are drawn, each wins £100.
FISHER STARS: This scheme raises funds for the upkeep, repair and maintenance of the furnishings of the building. You can choose from making a £5/£10/£20 donation a month. In 2017 these schemes will receive a membership card and quarterly updates.
MEMBERSHIP: Finally if you feel that your relationship with this wonderful theatre is deeper and you would like to become more involved, you can register as a member of the charity. Members have voting rights when electing Trustees, and become part of what steers the Fisher Theatre into the future. National Theatre presents an Encore of No Man’s Land Thursday 5th January, 7pm • £12 Following their hit run on Broadway, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart return to the West End stage in Harold Pinter’s No Man's Land, broadcast live to cinemas from Wyndham’s Theatre, London. One summer's evening, two ageing writers, Hirst and Spooner, meet in a Hampstead pub and continue their drinking into the night at Hirst's stately house nearby. As the pair become increasingly inebriated, and their stories increasingly unbelievable, the lively conversation soon turns into a revealing power game, further complicated by the return home of two sinister younger men.

Fisher Theatre Film - The Nice Guys (15) Monday 9th January , 7.30pm • £5 Set against the backdrop of 1977 Los Angeles, The Nice Guys opens when single father and licensed PI Holland March (Gosling) is hired to investigate the apparent suicide of famous porn star Misty Mountains. As the trail leads him to track down a girl named Amelia (Qualley), he encounters less licensed and less hands-off private eye Jackson Healey (Russell Crowe) and his brass knuckles, both hired by the young hippie. However, the situation takes a turn for the worse when Amelia vanishes and it becomes apparent that March wasn't the only party interested. As both men are forced to team up, they'll have to take on a world filled with eccentric goons, strippers dressed as mermaids and even a possible government conspiracy.

Cellar Nights - An evening of solo Jazz guitar with Jon Buck Friday 13th January, 7.30pm • £8.50, Students £4 (limited admission) Club snacks and cocktail specials available Jon will be playing a range of standard (and some not so standard), jazz tunes from his wide and varied repertoire, leaning on many different influences. From Bebop to Latin, from swing to cool jazz. Add to that fine food and drinks in the newly re-equipped cellar bar, this is an evening not to be missed for any music lover. Jon is a local guitarist, singer, composer and teacher, who plays a bit of everything but specialises in the guitar. His wide range of influences and huge love of music help him to create the perfect vibe for every occasion. He is a Licentiate of the London College of Music and has written a guitar tuition book for worldwide publishers Hamlyn. Ale Martin, Argentinian Tenor presents ‘Destiny’ with his musicians Saturday 21st January, 7.30pm • £12 Ale started his artistic career in his home country of Argentina at the age of 16. His first steps on a stage were devoted to Argentine folk music in his native province of Córdoba as well as in Catamarca where he grew up and got in contact with his musical roots. We are extremely lucky to have him coming to the Fisher Theatre with this new show by Ale and his musicians. You will hear popular opera arias from Verdi, Donizetti, Puccini, some songs from Queen, some tango, plus their own compositions performed in three languages, English, Spanish and Italian. Accompanied by his musicians and fellow composers Parid Subashi from Albania on violin and Juank Zamora from Spain on electric and Spanish guitar.
Met Live presents Roméo et Juliette Sunday 22nd January, 5.55pm • £12 When Diana Damrau and Vittorio Grigolo starred opposite each other in Manon at the Met in 2015, the New York Times said,“the temperature rises nearly to boiling every time Damrau and Grigolo are on stage together.” Now they’re back as opera’s classic lovers, in Gounod’s lush Shakespeare adaptation. The production, by director Bartlett Sher, has already won acclaim for its vivid 18th-century milieu and stunning costumes during runs at Salzburg and La Scala. Gianandrea Noseda conducts the sumptuous score.

Mark Nevin (Fairground Attraction) Friday 17th February, 7.30pm • £15/£12 Mark Nevin came to prominence in the late 80’s as the founding member, guitarist and songwriter of Fairground Attraction, with whom he enjoyed the number 1 single ‘Perfect’ and multi-platinum album, ‘First of a Million Kisses’ - each received a Brit award. He went on to collaborate as co-writer to Morrissey (scoring 4 top 20 singles), Kirsty MacColl and Lloyd Cole. His songs have been covered, among many others, by David Bowie, Joe Cocker and Ringo Starr. In 1999 he made the move to centre stage and producing his solo albums; ‘Insensitive Songwriter’ (1999). ‘The Mighty Dove’ (2002), ‘Stand Beside Me In The Sun (2011), ‘Beautiful Guitars’ (2014). Each album marks a milestone in the growth of his confidence and the honing of his unique narrative style. 2017 sees the release of his brilliant new album ‘MY UNFASHIONABLE OPINION’. His live shows are a master-class in storytelling, songwriting and musicianship which feature his former Fairground Attraction band-mates, Roger Beaujolais on the vibraphone, Simon Edwards on bass and Richard Marcangelo on drums.

Title: Into the woods Opening & Private View: 5 Feb (6-8pm) Closes: 2 March My main inspiration comes from natural forms; shape, texture and particular colour. I tend to stylise the forms and spend a lot of time planning the composition. I love to experiment with a variety of media. My paintings are bright, cheerful and contemporary. One of my objectives is to draw you, the viewer into my paintings – to enjoy the images and to bring a splash of colour into your life!
Artists: Gillian Draper & Martin Dickens Title: Earth and Water Opening & Private View: 5 March (6-8pm) Closes: 30 March Martin trained as a ceramicist with a student of Lucy Rie and is still deeply influenced by her work. He creates an eclectic mix of thrown and studio ware, characterised by richly coloured glazes and organic forms which continue to evolve. Gilly, a native of Norfolk, studied art at the Ecole du Louvre and Chelmer Institute. She paints figurative and semiabstract waterscapes which often feature birds, animals and figures drawn from life and imagination. A donation from the proceeds of sale of the paintings will be donated to the St Elizabeth Hospice charity in memory of Gilly's son Rowan Draper (1989-2015), a talented actor who appeared in productions at the Fisher.

Fisher Youth Theatre Group This youth group has been running for 16 years and has gone from strength to strength with professional performers leading it. The Fall of Yarmouth Suspension Bridge: A Local and National Disaster by Gareth Davies
Beyond Eternity Productions presents Meet Tommy Atkins Thursday 2nd March, 7.30pm • £12/£10 This new play written by playwright/actor/musician Peter Gill (Talbot House, The Jerry Lee Lewis Story) details, through the eyes of a simple 'Tommy' the reality of war for those who actually fought it. In an astonishing solo performance, 'Meet Tommy Atkins' takes the audience through his war - a war that saw him fight at Ypres, Passendale, Loos and on the Somme, this took him to the depths of despair but also brought him unique comradeship that he would never find again. From the beginning of the war to the end, Private Tommy Atkins was there. This is his story.

The worst single calamity to befall the town in its history. This talk, given by the author of a recent book on the subject, will explore such fundamental issues as: what happened, why did it happen, and could it have been prevented, as well as the legacy of the disaster up to the present day.

Royal Opera House live presents The Sleeping Beauty Sunday 5th March, 2pm • £12 A perennial delight and a much-loved classic, The Royal Ballet‘s The Sleeping Beauty combines the best of classical ballet, with all its charms and virtuosity, splendid music and talented dancers. First choreographed to Tchaikovsky’s great musical score by Marius Petipa in Russia in 1890, The Sleeping Beauty has wonderful ensembles, solos including the Rose Adage as Princess Aurora meets her suitors, and of course the concluding celebratory dances for the happy union of prince and princess. As a gesture of belief in the possibility of harmony and understanding within all of us interwoven in today’s World. Keith James presents an honest and loving reflection of the timeless and insightful music of Yusuf - Cat Stevens. The amassed body of music from this hugely popular and sincerely adored singer/songwriter made for a collection of 'must have' records across a whole generation. Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat were on everyone's turntables and on every radio station, live versions are played in concerts, bars and on the world's beaches to this day. Yusuf campaigns on many educational and humanitarian issues. He was awarded the 'Man of Peace' award by the Nobel Peace Laureates. In 2015 and he received the Lifetime achievement award from BBC Radio 2 and the Ivor Novello Award for outstanding song collection. This concert will give you far more than just the music itself.There is a huge amount of insight into the history and the spirit of Cat Stevens; his early pop career, his illness that changed him existentially and spiritually into an incredibly thoughtful and loving singer songwriter; such that his songs are remembered instantly for their uplifting sense of truth, promise and human fragility.

The exotic imagery of the Nagasaki setting is drawn from 19th-century Western artists’ romanticised views of Japan. What happens when the wildest parts of our imagination take control? After the death of her mother, Ellie escapes into a flickering world of comic books and wild fantasies. A visually stunning exploration of the power of grief and imagination, using UV landscapes, live music and puppetry. The Playback event afterwards is only happening at the Fisher Theatre on this tour and is about getting everyone involved. The audience will share their feelings and stories related to the play they’ve just seen. The skilled and experienced team of actors will playback or enact what the have gathered. The audience will often be delighted and moved by the recreation of their own and others stories as theatre.
Fisher On Stage Course Sunday 2nd- Friday 7th April , Cost: £165 per student age 13-18, all local students will be hosting a Belgian student A week of intensive theatrical workshops, masterclasses and opportunities to share experiences with young people from Belgium. You are invited to have one of the Belgian visitors as a guest for the 6 days. The course is limited to 15 Belgian students and 15 local students. Ages: 13-18. Most activities are based at the Fisher Theatre and each day starts at 10am with a 9:30pm finish. All activities, trips out, lunches and evening meals are included in the cost. A wonderful opportunity to meet like-minded people from Belgium and the UK and have fun whilst learning from theatre professionals! Xim, Folk Music Extraordinaire
Xim set themselves a tricky brief when the band formed back in 1997: compose ‘traditional’ dance tunes, play them on bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, melodeon, flute and fretless bass, combine Central French forms with modern elements of the global melting pot - not something necessarily with much of a future. But here they are in 2017, after nearly 20 years of playing major festivals, the South Bank, appearing on Radio 3 and creating community music and dance projects. The traditional music of the centre of France is rhythmic and drone-based, traditionally played for dances such as the bourrée, schottische, mazurka and polka, but within Xim’s cunning arrangements you may get fleeting glimpses of Jamaica, New Orleans and Detroit (and when the sky clears – Norwich!) They have been associated with FolkEast since its inception, developing the PaX Project, encouraging other musicians to learn the tunes, arrangements and perform with them over the course of a weekend. You might not have heard this kind of sound before, but give it a go.
UpShoot Theatre Company presents Bricks and Mortals Saturday 15th April, 7.30pm • £10/£8 concessions Tales, histories and mysteries about the old Norfolk Brickyard that served Holkham Hall in North Norfolk, have been gathered, spun, woven and then cast into beautiful 3-dimensional tales about the area, punctuated with folk music played live by Roger Eno, as part of the cast. The largest room within the Theatre offers a maximum seating capacity of 160 and an impressive 240 when all guests/delegates are standing with minimal seating on offer. Unusual for an auditorium are the windows in the roof that flood the space with natural light. These can be blacked out if not required. Added to which are theatre lights that can create added atmosphere to enhance any event from the formality of a conference to an evening party. The floor consists of 60 individual floor panels that can be raised or lowered, to six different heights, allowing you to choose the size of the main stage, seated area, centre stage or even a catwalk.
