Efthymios P. Pournaras is a surrealist artist working in Athens. His artworks reflect his unusual background and interests. Few artists can boast having a serious scientific education from a variety of intellectual yet radically different scientific fields such as physics, biology, and IT. The strategic combination of the acquired knowledge helped him to become a leading quantitative analyst, a lonely occupation requiring intense analytical focus and mathematical imagination.

He says his interior world was shaped not just by the abstract algorithms of high statistical modeling but by the Renaissance paintings in the Athenian galleries and museums as well as the street art that proliferates everywhere in this vibrant city. Having created mixed media figurative works for many years, he says a turning point came with the birth of his niece Kleo.

“When that pure, new soul first turned her gaze on me, I was overwhelmed by the intensity. It gave my art a new direction. Since then, I began working on larger pieces, often featuring children. My sister now has three children, and I find them an endless inspiration.”

Pournaras’ s paintings are highly structured, characterized by symbolic images acting as visual algorithms. He works on canvas mostly utilizing charcoal and acrylics.
