Introduction by Jeff Whiting President & Founder, Artists for Conservation Welcome to the sixth annual Artists for Conservation Festival presented by RE/MAX. Every fall since 2008 has been a special time, when artists from around the globe convene at Artists for Conservation’s exhibit premiere, to share their knowledge, passion, expertise and camaraderie. Many donate their time to offer public presentations, workshops, live demonstrations and more. Each brings a unique perspective through their paintings and sculptures, and a deep understanding and reverence for the subjects they portray. These artists are a part of a very special international AFC community that has grown over nearly two decades and spanning almost 30 countries. The AFC Festival offers an unparalleled chance for the public to meet these talented and dedicated artists in a unique forum of natural beauty, education and creativity. There is an unhealthy and growing disconnect in society, away from the natural world that supports us. The Artists for Conservation Festival represents a cultural movement, and the embodiment of applied art – that is, art in action to change the world. It’s our responsibility as artists, to use our talents and convictions to inspire the public and youth of tomorrow, to take action to protect what remains of this planet’s natural wonders. Each painting or sculpture has an important conservation story each artist is eager to share. The AFC Festival is a profoundly inspiring event for all, and for artists, it is a “gathering of the clans” . About Artists for Conservation The World’s Leading Artist Group Supporting the Environment
“Our mission is to support wildlife and habitat conservation, and environmental education through art that celebrates nature.” Many artists today are active participants in an important awareness and educational movement, channelling artistic talent toward connecting the public to nature to inspire awareness, appreciation and action. At the forefront of this movement is AFC. Founded in 1997 by artist and biologist Jeff Whiting, AFC is the world’s leading artist group supporting the environment. Dedicated to nurture, promote and leverage its world-class community of artists in support of our natural world, AFC drives its mission through three key pillars: Art & Environmental Education; Field Work & Research; and Artist Development. AFC Programs AFC’s Annual Juried Exhibit recognizes artists for their commitment to artistic excellence and conservation, raises awareness of conservation issues, and directly supports conservation organizations through the sale of artwork. AFC’s Flag Expeditions Program facilitates collaborative art and science field work to study and promote endangered species and their vanishing habitats and fosters a broader representation of the world’s biodiversity in art. AFC’s Explorers Program brings together teams of professional artists, leading subject matter experts and university level students on field expeditions to study wildlife, their environments and the conservation issues that concern them. AFC Documentary Films: Since 2011 AFC has been producing a series of short documentary films titled “Portraits of the Planet”. Each episode highlights artists working in different and exotic wilderness environments and tells inspiring art and conservation stories featuring AFC artists. AFC’s Art for Conservation Program provides an online venue at www.artistsforconservation.org for the sale of artwork with a portion of the proceeds earmarked by the artists to support a conservation organization of their choice. AFC Awards exist to highlight excellence in conservation and art and to empower and reward passionate professional artists as effective ambassadors for the environment. ArtistsForConservation.org is the main portal supporting AFC programs and featuring thousand of artworks. 4
AFC’s Annual Art Exhibit AFC’s annual exhibit is the world’s top conservation-themed art show and has become one of the most highly anticipated annual events among the nature-inspired art genres. The goal of the exhibit is: 1) To support conservation through art sales and education; 2) To showcase the extraordinary pool of artistic talent within AFC; and 3) To share the nature-inspired art genre with new audiences. This year’s exhibit features 85 original artworks for sale by 80 leading nature and wildlife artists from around the world. At least 40% of the proceeds from the sale of each artwork support conservation initiatives around the world, including those at AFC.

Simon Combes Award Guy Coheleach Internationally recognized American artist Guy Coheleach (pronounced Ko’-lee-ack) has been chosen to receive the Artists for Conservation’s (AFC) top honor: the Simon Combes Conservation Artist Award. AFC bestows this tribute annually to recognize artist members for their dedication to the conservation cause and outstanding artistic achievement. Guy joins a who’s-who roster of artists who’ve committed their lives to conservation, including David Shepherd, Robert Bateman, John Banovich, Robert Glen, Sue Stolberger, Pollyanna Pickering, Dr. Guy Harvey, Richard Ellis, John and Suzie Seerey-Lester and Karen Lawrence-Rowe. Guy is an author and the subject of 3 films. He is a true master of the nature and wildlife art genres, and a lifelong patron of wildlife conservation causes. For nearly 50 years, Guy has channeled his talent to generating funds to support wildlife conservation around the world. Guy has had 41 one-man exhibitions at museums in 23 cities, including at the Carnegie Museum, along with over a hundred one-man commercial shows. Not content with skydiving and walking safaris, he takes his need for field experience to the extreme. In 1972, he was run down by an elephant in Zambia.
2016 Festival Patron Robert Bateman Internationally acclaimed artist, Robert Bateman is generously supporting Artists for Conservation with another original painting, created specifically to commemorate and raise funds for AFC art and environmental education programming. Valued at $60,000 USD, the painting will be offered for sale during the festival. Bateman’s realistic painting style, featuring wildlife in its habitat, encourages the viewer to examine the natural world. His work is in many public and private collections, and several art museums. He has had one-man museum shows throughout North America, including at the Smithsonian Institute. Recently, the retrospective show, The Art of Robert Bateman, toured Canada and the USA for two years, and a one-man show toured Russia. Bateman’s art reflects his commitment to ecology. He is a spokesman for many environmental and preservation issues, using his art to raise millions of dollars for these causes. He has been the subject of numerous books and films; his honours and awards include 12 honorary doctorates, 3 schools named after him and Officer of the Order of Canada. In 2012, the Bateman Centre for Art & Environmental Education, opened in Victoria, BC and is a major landmark in the area. 7

AFC Lecture Series Patricia Banks, AFC (Canada) | Lecturer
Patricia Banks is an award-winning Canadian painter best known for her detailed oil and acrylic paintings. She travels widely and is inspired by the magnificence and splendor of the natural environment. Patricia has exhibited across North America. In 2007 Patricia won international acclaim by winning second place in the International Artist Magazine competition.
Dr. Rob Butler, AFC (Canada) | Filmmaker, Lecturer
Dr. Rob Butler, ornithologist, author, adjunct professor of biology at Simon Fraser University, co-founded the Pacific WildLife Foundation in 2003 to enhance research and education of the ocean and where he serves as President. He is also a scientific advisor and board member of several national and international organizations and institutions.
Guy Coheleach, AFC (USA) | Keynote Speaker
Internationally acclaimed artist Guy Coheleach is the recipient of AFC’s top honor: the Simon Combes Conservation Artist Award. Guy is an award-winning artist. He regularly lectures, and has set up research programs at Soysambu Conservancy, Kenya, where he also leads expeditions for artists and conservation biology students. Guy is a tireless campaigner for numerous conservation causes, including Soysambu Conservancy, and most recently the Amboseli Elephant Trust.
Becci Crowe, AFC (USA) | Lecturer, live demos
Specializing in wildlife and tribal portrait art, Becci’s passion has led her to travel to over 45 countries. She not only sees the world, but witnesses first hand the critical importance of conservation, knowing that people living in close proximity to wildlife are crucial to their survival. These experiences inspire the art Becci creates and fuel her passion for conservation.
Sharon K. Schafer, AFC (USA) | Lecturer, live demos
Sharon has a varied background ranging from award-winning painter and photographer, to wildlife biologist and river guide. Throughout the world, Schafer shares her artistic talent and passion for the the wildlands by teaching art and nature-related classes and lecturing extensively, and tirelessly, about the stunning beauty and amazing diversity of life on our planet.
Jeffrey Whiting (Canada) | AFC President & Founder and Artist
Jeff is the founder and visionary behind AFC. A biologist/geologist, sculptor, and author, at 16 years of age, the Canadian Prime Minister presented one of Jeff’s sculptures to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. At 18, Jeff published his first book and won first at the World Championships of Wildfowl Carving. Recipient of numerous awards, and Fellow of the Explorer’s Club.

AFC Documentary Films Art & Conservation in the Caymans Learn how a Caymanian marine biologist-turned-artist is championing international marine conservation efforts and how an international group of artists is working to help protect an underwater paradise and share it with the world before it is lost. Features encounters with stingrays, endangered sea turtles and invasive lion fish.
The Soysambu Legacy Experience Africa and the story of one of the world’s most successful wildlife painters who fought to conserve endangered species and one of Kenya’s most precious and unique areas. The film tells the remarkable story of the late Simon Combes and how his family are carrying on his legacy through art and conservation activism.
How an Artist Saved the Mountain Gorilla Two artists retrace the footsteps of legendary explorer Carl Akeley deep into the Virunga Mountains in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, to uncover the mysteries of the man who is credited with saving the Mountain Gorilla from extinction and founding Africa's first National Park nearly 100 years ago.
Other Films The Perfect State THE PERFECT STATE speaks to a desire for a new relationship with nature told against the alluring backdrop of nature in the Salish Sea. The film co-produced by AFC Member, Rob Butler and Mike McKinlay has been selected to show in the 17th annual Planet in Focus Film Festival in Toronto. Rob will be present to answer questions and discuss the film.
Extremely Wild This film features the story of Grouse Mountain’s two orphaned Grizzly Bears, Grinder and Coola and their journey to the Grouse Mountain Refuge for Endangered Wildlife. This recently updated version of the film includes over 10 years of footage of the resident bears.
Reflections: Art for an Oil Free Coast Five-hundred kilometres north of Vancouver is a wild coastline: home to the Spirit Bear and whales, wolf packs and grizzlies, First Nations and coastal communities at risk with the looming threat of a proposed oil pipeline and hundreds of oil tankers a year. Follow an expedition with 50 artists (11 from AFC) and their response to a region at risk.
The Origin of Birds In this film, paleontologist Julia Clarke takes us on a journey to uncover the evidence that birds are dinosaurs. In the last 40 years, scientists have identified many shared features between birds and two-legged carnivorous dinosaurs called theropods. Screened year-round at Grouse Mountain. 10
Birdman This film chronicles the history of man’s ancient desire of bird-like flight and explains the how and why of arguably the world’s most dangerous sport today. Screened year-round at Grouse Mountain.

Xwa-lack-tun (aka Rick Harry) was born and raised in Squamish. This artist gained his skills and education from Emily Carr College of Art and Capilano College. Xwa-lack-tun’s works are seen throughout Vancouver and the surrounding areas in public art installations and private collections. Huuyaa | First Nations Carving Demo
Huuyaa (aka Richard Baker) is a member of the Squamish Nation in North Vancouver, BC, Capilano Indian Reserve and is an internationally known artist for his Northwest Coast Art. He is also well-known for his spoken word and First Nations cultural storytelling. Huuyaa helps other artists by supporting their work and their aspirations.
James Harry | First Nations Carving Demo James Harry (Nexw kalus) is a contemporary sculptor and painter focusing in aboriginal artwork. He is from the Squamish Nation (Skwxwú7mesh) and of European decent (Scottish, Irish, and German). Son of hereditary chief and acclaimed artist, Xwalacktun (Rick for Harry), James can be recognized his artwork at the Vancouver International Airport - a 6’ high metal totem pole that emits LED lights through Coast Salish Iconography.

Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos | Shakuhachi Japanese Bamboo Flute
Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos lives a life guided by shakuhachi. With over 20 years of experience of shakuhachi and meditation practice, he is dedicated to the ultimate goal of spreading the history, culture, and art of playing the shakuhachi, Japan’s most well-known vertical bamboo flute. Andrew Kim | Musical Guest
Andrew is a multi-award winning musician with 30 years of experience studying music from around the world. His music includes traditional Indian sitar, Indian styled violin, solo instrumental guitar compositions as well as various Indian, African and Japanese collaboratve projects.
AVIA Trio | Musical Group
AVIA Trio is a group composed of three musicians of Asian ancestry who incorporate a variety of Asian instruments such as shakuhachi, shamisen, zheng and sitar and draw inspiration from many styles of contemporary, improvisation, ambient and non-western traditions of playing. They consist of shakuhachi/shamisen/vocalist Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos, zheng improvisor virtuoso Vi-An Diep, and sitar-guitarist Andrew Kim. AVIA play a kind of music characterized by spontaneous free-improvisation, extended open-ended bridges, and the use of unconventional playing techniques.
Russell Shumsky | Participatory Drumming Russell is a Vancouver-based percussionist / performer / teacher who travels to West Africa regularly to study with master drummers Famoudou KonatĂŠ and Mamady Keita. Besides touring internationally with some great contra dance bands, Russell runs a hand drumming school here in Vancouver. He has toured and performed with Sarah McLachlan. Visit www.drumming.ca/. The Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society is a non-profit organization whose volunteers are dedicated to public education and the rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned birds.
