This new impersonation has strongly influenced his work, generating imagery that sees family at the center of his artistic inspiration and concerns. Gonzalez’s images of himself juggling work, exercise, playtime, house chores, and babysitting, beyond being visually poetic, are chronicles of human interconnectedness, of the shifting roles of mothers and fathers in modern society, of new gender models, and new definitions of “work” and “play.” Multiple evolving and intersecting identities are explored and reformulated, in the awareness of the syncretic complexity required to express the issues and concerns of a former working class Latino American, now a middle class, highly educated culture worker, whose wife is from a different ethnic background.
