ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I prefer drawing and painting from life. Some of the flowers captured in this grouping: magnolia, lily, camellia, geranium, and antique roses—were brought into my studio, many from my own yard. You would think two blooms from the same plant would be hard to tell apart, but they vary quite a bit. The window for working with blooms is pretty short. From bud to open flower to dripping petals, their life spans fascinate me. In the three to four sittings to complete a piece, light shifts, and as a result, the colors I see change as well. Like a time lapse snapshot, each canvas is a representation of collected moments. While I like my subjects to be recognizable, I don’t concern myself with the literal. It’s the story that really matters. Capture that, and you have Art.

ABOUT THE ARTIST 22
Paint and ink run in Mary-Frances’ blood. Raised in a family of artistic people, it’s not surprising she’s been making art since she was very young. Because of her love for combining language with photography and illustration, she was naturally drawn to graphic design. Since completing a BFA at the University of Georgia / Lamar Dodd School of Art, she has made her living as a graphic designer. Mary-Frances keeps a home studio and spends about six hours a week totally immersed in her art. She prefers drawing and painting from life and has a particular fascination with the life span of flowering plants.
