FORSYTH
Essay for orchestra: ‘67
MENDELSSOHN
Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64 (Haldan Martinson)
SCHUBERT
Symphony No. 9, “The Great”
This concert should really be called “The Greats,” as there are so many of them connected to this event. Haldan Martinson, principal violinist with the Boston Symphony, one of the great orchestras of the world, returns to roots in Saskatoon to play Mendelssohn’s masterful concerto. Then Maestro Kirk Smith, principal conductor of Chicago’s Black Music Repertory Ensemble, leads the orchestra in a performance of Schubert’s wondrous Ninth Symphony, which truly is “The Great.” The SSO also pays tribute to the late Edmonton composer Malcolm Forsyth, one of the greats of 20th century Canadian music.
