linen care Keep bedding and towels fresh, hygienic and lasting longer DuVet InnerS ● Air all bedding regularly including duvet’s, blankets and pillows to avoid moisture build up during winter. ● Shake Feather & Down bedding regularly to restore loft and for extra warmth, place blankets under the bedding rather than on top to allow your duvet to perform at its best.
PILLoWS ● Pillows should be plumped often or when making the bed daily. ● Synthetic/Fibre fill pillows should be replaced every 1 ½ to 2 years and use a pillow protector to avoid stains. Feather & DoWn MattreSS toPPerS ● Rotate the mattress topper weekly by 180° and air regularly always with the small grid squares to the top.
WooL unDerLay’S ● Wool underlay fibres will bounce back to their original springy appearance with a vigorous shake or a light vacuum. toWeLS ● Wash towels separately, keeping dark and light colours apart. For the first wash of dark coloured towels, soak in cold water and common salt to prevent “bleeding” then put through normal wash. ● Fabric softener is not recommended, as it leaves a fine residue reducing absorbency. ● A hot wash 40-60°c is recommended every so often to deep clean the towels and rejuvenate the fibres. ● Use instructions on detergent packets as a guide only, as a build-up of washing detergent combined with prolonged exposure to sunlight can make towels become hard.

SheetIng ● Wash all linen before use and keep sheets, duvet covers and towels separate using a mild detergent (try a wool wash with eucalyptus) for colour retention. ● Use a delicate, warm cycle up to 40°C for 100% cotton and line dry but don’t leave in the sun too long to avoid fading and hardness. ● Use a low to medium heat setting for dryers and remove fold and air when
dry. If sheets have cooled and wrinkled tumble dry another 5-10 minutes with a lightly damp facecloth. ● For Flannelette sheets first wash add approximately ½ cup of WHITE vinegar to the final rinse, this will soften the sheets and help remove any lint.

Margo Berryman went behind the scenes. Where did it all begin? Lisa Rose & Sally Paterson have been friends since varsity days and eight years ago, decided to take the plunge & create their own textile business, specialising in quality children’s and teenagers bed linen. They created Patersonrose and are proud to have completely New Zealand designed products. What make Patersonrose linen unique? Patersonrose linen is designed in Christchurch from only 100% quality cotton. Lisa says, “ Our range is good value and an essential investment when our children spend such a long time in their beds; they deserve to sleep in natural cotton. Each collection has it’s own unique look and story but can be combined with other designs to create completely different finishes & colour palettes.”
What are the trends for 2012? Strong colours, partnered with classic design – rather than busy teeming. There is a move away from frills and busy textures, leaning to more classic looks, but bringing in themes & children’s passions with accessories such as cushions and wall decals. any advice for choosing a bedroom look? Lisa says the biggest error people make when re-decorating is choosing their curtains first, and usually selecting a patterned fabric. This then limits all other décor options as patterned curtains leave very few mix and match options. Lisa and Sally suggest choosing one or two key colours to focus on. Old fashioned rhubarb and oat slice • • • • • • •
1 kg rhubarb 1 cup caster sugar 1 cups flour 1 cups oats (rolled or wholegrain) cup brown sugar cup chopped walnuts 240g soft butter
Chop up rhubarb and sprinkle with caster sugar on an oven tray and bake at 170°C for 25 min. Combine all other ingredients in a large mixing bowl and mix thoroughly. Press about 2/3 of this mix into a slice tray and bake at 180°C for 15 minutes. Once golden remove from oven and smooth your cooked rhubarb over the base. Crumble remaining mixture over the rhubarb and return to the oven (still at 180°C) for another 15 minutes.
