DESIGN DRIVEN PLANSMATTER OFFERS ARCHITECTURALLY SIGNIFICANT VACATION RENTALS. B Y K AT E N E L S O N
Design-minded jet setters, the world is officially your oyster. That’s thanks in part to the Minneapolis duo who developed PlansMatter, which makes architecturally significant vacation rentals available for travelers to experience and appreciate. The company partners with homeowners to highlight hand-selected, high-style properties across the region, country and globe. “We believe good design can inspire and improve life in both small and large ways,” explain cofounders Connie Lindor and Scott Muellner, themselves both architects. “The more we elevate the importance of design, the better our lives — and the world — will be.” The PlansMatter team carefully curates the properties in its modern-focused portfolio, ensuring each abode has a unique “architectural intention and a story to tell.” Here are our picks for a design-driven stay.

GUNFLINT LAKE CABIN GRAND MARAIS
SADDLE PEAK HOUSE TOPANGA, CALIFORNIA
THE POLE HOUSE FAIRHAVEN, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA
The recipient of an AIA Minnesota Honor Award, this cozy cabin was conceived by Minneapolis architecture firm VJAA. The secluded home allows visitors to appreciate the simple things in life: taking in the surrounding fauna and flora, listening to the wood crackling in the fireplace, and letting go of the day’s worries with a much-needed sauna session.
Designed by Venice, California–based Sant Architects, this incredible abode sits amongst the Santa Monica Mountains overlooking the Pacific. Explains principal Michael J. Sant: “The house explores several oppositional relationships that combine to create a harmonious sense of balance and encourage a profoundly intimate experience of nature.” The property features a main house and studio, an infinity pool and hot tub, and California chicness to boot.
Built by Frank Dixon in the seventies and recently re-envisioned by Franco Fiorentini of F2 Architecture, this stunning structure is one of Australia’s most iconic homes. From its enviable spot suspended above Fairhaven Beach, the abode offers 200 degrees of oceanfront sightlines accompanied by the soothing sound of the waves crashing onto the shore.
