T
here have been many silver linings
amongst the unexpected new challenges faced in 2020. Our first exhibition since lockdown celebrates the pure, multiplices and creative responses this period has enabled. The momentum of creativity has never, in our lifetime, felt so powerful. Artists have always needed and have been driven to respond to the world around them. Art provides a means of not only recording a moment in history, but equally gifts a window that transports their audiences on a personal journey they may not have otherwise embarked on.
Throughout the last six months, the diverse responses, interpretations and journeys offered by our artists, communicated through multimedia, has driven our determination to use the time we have spent in this altered universe to emerge fully ‘Locked and Loaded’. The ‘Locked + Loaded’ exhibition, the artwork it showcases and the artists’ quotes are a reflection of the unplanned journey we have been on, a celebration of what has been accomplished and a permanent reminder, that together, we can transform the world for the better. Sam Wagner is a New York-based artist who focuses on shape and harmony of composition. His work attempts to stray away from the expected use of value and perspective to draw a childlike wonder from the viewer.

Lee Herring is a contemporary painter specialising in colourful, textured and abstracted landscapes. He was born in Sunderland, in the North East of England and has always had a creative streak. After excelling in art throughout his early education, he went on to study Fine Art at the University of Chester.

Anika Manuel is a portrait and figurative painter from Cornwall. Her passion is for the flat, found image and its subsequent translation into painting. Having had an interest in drawing faces from an early age, she continues to capture realistic

Esbe works on canvas and glass and is inspired by the delicate draughtmanship of the Art Deco and Art Nouveau eras. She hopes to bring a modern sensibility into her images through her love of colours, unusual colour combinations, and Pop Art.

Laura earned her BFA in Painting in her native United States from the State University of New York. It was here she studied with abstract expressionist Joop Sanders, friend and apprentice of Willem de Kooning, and the founder of the American Abstract Expressionism group.
The influence of her education can be seen in her abstract works, with her use of bold colour and intuitive style. She continued her studies in textile design at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, and earned her MA Fine Art at Middlesex University, London.

Victoria Heald studied at Camberwell College of Art and Chelsea College of Art, graduating with a BA in Fine Art, First Class Honours. She is based in her London studio, painting figurative and animal works on gold, drawing London landmarks and undertaking commissions of a variety of subjects.

“The last seven months have re-defined normality & created an environment for reflection in all areas of our work and lives. I used this period of disruption to make new types of work, exploring and experimenting with my practice in different directions. Ricardo Reis is inspired to create amalgamations of the dream world with the real. Ricardo loves the challenge of being able to put onto paper the ideas and surreal world of his own creation. Georgina Harris uses painting and drawing to investigate this issue. She does this by looking at the ties between forests and religious architecture, ancient systems of belief and the experience of looking up. “As I always like to adapt to the situation, I began writing a book entitled: "Quarantined Lives". The first publication will be available in a months time in Italian and English. I wrote it together with psychologist Giuliana Attanasio who talks about the mental repercussions of her patients. So I spent this period of time writing not only about the pandemic, but also my observations of human behaviour in society, introducing concepts of science, dance and art. “Life in lockdown made me revisit and re-charge. Without the usual shows and fairs I was able to slow down and take a closer look at the beauty in my immediate surroundings a little more. Cycling round a deserted London provided a new perspective on a normally bustling city. The river Thames became a hugely important focus for me, especially on my daily walks, providing a feeling of calm amongst all the uncertainty. I created a new series of small pieces based on the beauty and unusual things I saw on these walks. I also was able to develop a new light and flowing water installation based on the river.”
