A beautifully curated collection of works by highly respected French Impressionist painter Gen Paul. Born as Eugène Paul in a house in Montmartre, Paris, he began drawing and painting as child for enjoyment and went on to make a living from his art for 60 yearsalthough never recieving any formal training.

Gen Paul (1895 - 1975)

Paul’s early work reflected the influences of his friends in Montmartre, but he soon developed a dynamic and charasmatic form of expressionism reflecting influences as diverse as Van Gogh, Tolouse-Lautrec and El Greco. Paul first exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Indèpendants in Paris in 1920 and 8 years later his works were already being exhibited with those of Pablo Picasso and Chaim Soutine.

By the 1930s Paul had developed a serious addiciton to alcohol - the paintings of this time reflecting a more bleak mood with precise lines and carefully chosen colours and a strong emphasis of rhythm over motion.

From the 1940s up to his death, Paul returned to a style of action painting defined by many of the elements of his work in the 1920s. Since Paul’s death a number of his works can be found in museums across France & Europe.
