Dyf set up a studio in Arles in 1922 and began his career as a landscape artist – painting views of the surrounding countryside. His work began to attract attention from collectors and dealers and it was not long before he began exhibiting at the Salon des Artists Français, Salon d’Autumn and Salon des Tulleries.

By 1935 Dyf had returned to Paris and during World War II he joined the Resistance and was based in Correze. By 1950 he had set up a studio in Cannes and a few years later met a young girl by the name of Claudine. Claudine was 19 at the time, some 36 years younger than Marcel, and in 1965 after posing for him for many years the two married. The spend many years together, traveling the world in search of subject matter and each summer they would spend time in their home in Brittany. By this time Dyf had become known for his impressionistic landscapes, still lives and portraits and his paintings had been exhibited throughout the world, with shows in England, America, Canada, Germany and Algeria. Today he is considered one of the last of the true Impressionist artists.

Henri Lebasque

(1865-1937)

Lebasque was a founding member of the Salon d’Automne in 1903 with his friend Matisse. Two years later a group of artists exhibited there who included Rouault, Derain, Vuillard, Manguin and Matisse. They were dubbed ‘Les Fauves’ for their stylistic ‘savagery’.

The critic Vauxcelles noted that Lebasque’s talent arrived ‘in the midst of the roaring of the unchained beasts’. Like Les Fauves, Lebasque adopted a similar flattening of the picture plane, but blended with a sophisticated, subtle fluidity.

Antoine Bouvard Snr. (1870-1956)

Antoine Bouvard Senior trained as an architect and studied art and architecture under Constant-Dufeus, at the Ecole des BeauxArts in Paris. His paintings show the influence of Felix Ziem, reflecting his love of Venice in the delicacy and fluidity of his use of colour, capturing in his paintings, the warmth and beauty that he found there.

Known as one of the most prolific painters of Venetian genre from this period, Bouvards works are broad and confidently painted, capturing all the atmosphere and charm of one of the most beautiful cities in the world. His popularity has continued to the present day, placing him amongst the most recognized and respected painters of Venetian subjects. Bouvard often painted under the pseudonym of Marc Aldine.

Carlos Nadal (1917-1998)

Carlos Nadal was a celebrated Spanish painter who lived in Paris during the first years of his life. These early years were instrumental to Nadal’s development as an artist. His father had a commercial design studio and was acquainted with established artists from Montparnasse such as Maurice Utrillo, Raoul Dufy and Henri Matisse, exposing the young Nadal particularly to the Fauvist techniques from the two latter artists, which would influence his own practice.

In 1921, when Nadal was five years old, the Nadal family moved to Barcelona and it is here that he developed his practice during his adolescence. From the age of 16 Nadal joined the Catalan artistic circle Cercles Artistis de Sant Lluc, which predominantly acted as a forum for artistic debate and provided exhibition opportunities for young emerging artists. It was a time where Nadal experimented with various new concepts and forms that were developing in Spain, but which ended abruptly during the outbreak of Spanish Civil War in 1936.

Jean Baptiste Olive (1848-1936)

Olive’s artistic talents were evident from a young age, and at the advice of a local artist named Étienne Cornellier, he was enrolled at the École des BeauxArts de Marseille.

Following his studies, Olive entered the studio of Gustave

Julien and then Étienne Cornellier, with whom he travelled to Paris for the first time. In Paris, Olive became immersed in the bohemian circle of artists and writers that lived around Montmartre and soon assisted with the painting decorations of Sacré Coeur du Montmartre and the pavilions of the World Fair of 1889. Olive began to exhibit in the Paris Salons and received numerous awards for his vibrant and colourful landscapes, becoming a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1881, a year which marked the beginning of a long and successful artistic career.

Leon Bellemont (1866-1961)

Léon Bellemont was a French marine painter born in Langres, in North-eastern France. He was a pupil of Leon Bonnat and exhibited in 1896 at the Salon of French Artists. He went on to receive a medal in 1905.

As a member of the Society of French Artists, he was noticed by his Breton navies and was placed in Hors-Concours in 1925, the year in which he was awarded the Marie Bashkirtseff Prize and the Bonnat Students’ Association Prize.

Victor Charreton (1864-1936)

Victor Charreton

(1864-1936) belongs to a generation of artists who devoted themselves to ‘le paysage’, just like the Impressionists did before them, paying attention to the influence of seasons, light and colours. Furthermore, he travelled extensively and together with his wife, he visited Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, England, Spain and Morocco. His evolution tended towards a use of richer and brighter colours, notably in the mauves and violets which characterize his style. Victor Charreton is famous for his landscapes and still-life paintings, often sharing Impressionist preoccupations whilst trying to capture momentary effects of specific times of day or seasons, at sunset or in a snowy landscape.

Raymond Thibesart (1874-1968)

Raymond Thibesart’s ethereal landscapes won great acclaim in the French Salons in the early twentieth century. Born in 1874, in the elegant town of Bar-sur-Aube, surrounded by gently rolling hills and the champagne vineyards of the Grand Est region, the beauty of the French landscape and the artistic possibilities that it evoked made a deep impression on the young Thibesart.

In his early twenties Thibesart studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and later at the progressive Académie Julian under the tutorage of Jules Lefebvre and Tony Robert-Fleury, who introduced a strong element of symbolism into his work. In 1903 Thibesart moved to Vaux sur Seine in the countryside to the north-west of Paris, encouraged by Boggio who had moved to the area the year earlier. The two artists travelled frequently to Italy, Switzerland and Belgium, often with their fellow artist and friend Henri Martin, to find new sources of inspiration.

Jacques was a french artist, he was a student of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseille in 1943; and then the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1945, his first personal exhibition took place in Casablanca in 1952 and 1954. He began to appear in 1953 at the Salon de la Jeune Peinture, the Prix Fénéon, the Prix Friesz, then in 1960 at the Salon d’Automne

Jacques Martin Ferrieres (1893-1972)

Jacques Martin-Ferrieres was born in 1893 in Saint-Paul de Vence in South Eastern France into a family of artists, including his father Henri Martin, the famous pointillist. He began his formal training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, studying under Frederic Cormon and Ernest Laurent, but soon looking away from academic conventions and restraints of the day. He gradually became known for his thick application of paint, applying it in layers to give the canvas a type of animation, as well as learning the pointillist technique from father. Martin, he became known as a painter of portraits and landscapes. He also enjoyed painting in Winter from the 1950’s onwards.

Jean Franck Baudoin (1870-1961)

Baudoin was the son of a sculptor and therefore woke up very early to an artistic life. His family supported his talent and sent him to Paris to live with his Uncle. He was the student of ‘Trupheme’, a Director at the Superior Class of Drawing in Paris whom he also studied with Rousseau, Bouguereau, Robert-Fleury, Baschet and Royer. His family bought him a hotel at Montparnasse in order to help support him. Having won awards for his work of wood engraving exhibited at the exhibition between 1888-1896 Jean-Franck Baudoin turned to painting. It was in the Ile de Re (his place of birth) where his family were refuged during the war of 1870, that the artist mostly used his easel.

Eugene Paul (1895-1975)

As a Montmartre native, Eugene Paul was born in Paris in 1985 and began drawing and painting as a child. His father died at age 10 and Paul was then trained to work in decorative furnishings to help support his family. He served in the French army during WWI and was wounded twice, resulting in him losing a leg. This then inspired his return to painting. Although Paul never reciebed any formal training he became fast friends with Juan Gris who helped him a great deal and he went on to make a living from his art for almost sixty years.

Paul first exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Indépendants in Paris in 1920, and went on to be exhibited alongside Pablo Picasso and Chaïm Soutin. Paul began the 1930s battling an addition to alcohol, further complicating his chronic health problems. The paintings of 1930s reflect a more somber mood with precise lines and carefully chosen colors and an emphasis of rhythm over motion.

Emile Mangenot (1910-1991)

A highly regarded landscape painter, Émile Mangenot painted views of the various regions of France, and in particular scenes in Brittany and Normandy. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he won a silver medal in 1957; in the same year a painting of his was acquired by the State. Although it was not until 1958 that he had his first one-man show, at the Galerie André Weil in Paris, it was followed by several more in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Edward Seago (1910-1974)

The fresh and energetic paintings by Seago represent some of Britain’s finest examples of Impressionism from the twentieth Century. The artist was often considered self-taught, but he did take instruction from Royal Academician Bertram Priestman (1868-1951). Edward Seago was involved in the publication of many books throughout his career. In 1934 he published a book entitled ‘Sons of Sawdust’ which told of circus life in Western Ireland. Forty-two of his paintings were used to illustrate a collection of poems by John Masefield in 1936, as well as in 1937 and 1942. Seago also wrote books related to the World Wars, and an autobiography entitled ‘A Canvas to Cover in 1947’. Seago’s work was famed to attract crowds; in 1945 a show of his work at Colnaghi’s resulted in queues outside the door! The artist’s work has been exhibited worldwide and his inventive use of oils and watercolours is instantly recognizable.

Dorothea Sharp (1874-1955)

Montague Dawson

(1890-1973)

Montague Dawson’s renown rested principally on his skill in depicting the great clipper ships in the “days of sail” in the late 19th Century. Collectors of his early paintings included Queen Elizabeth II and American Presidents of the time, including Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon Johnson.

Montague Dawson became perhaps the greatest painter of the sea and sailing ships of the first part of the 20th century. His original paintings are scarce and extremely expensive and many of the original 20th century signed colour prints are now faded, lost or damaged.

Donald McIntyre (1923-2009)

Born in 1923 in Yorkshire but brought up in North West Scotland, Donald Mclntyre studied at the Glasgow School of Art under James Wright At Garelochhead. He has exhibited at the London Galleries, Royal Cambrian Academy, Galleries Racines Brussels, Fosse Gallery and Thackery Gallery. His subjects include Scottish and Welsh landscapes in a strong post-impressionist style which shows the influence of 20th century Scottish artists from Cadell through to Redpath and Philipson and Michie.

Geoffrey Key (b.1941)

Geoffrey’s strong, dynamic figures and dreamlike compositions have considerable appeal, with Key being regarded as one of the most influential of British living artists. His use of form, texture, light and colour have led to his work featuring in public and private collections across the world. Key’s career as an artist now spans five decades and his work and exhibitions have been widely appraised and reviewed. His paintings feature in several public art collections in the northwest of England, including Salford and Manchester Art Galleries.

George Houston was born in Dalry in 1869 and educated at Saltcoats Public School and Glasgow School of Art. He lived most of his life in Dalry painting his native Ayrshire but he also maintained a studio in Glasgow and spent time painting in the Inner Hebrides and around Loch Fyne. Houston became an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1909 and then an Academician in 1925. He died a Dalry in 1947.

Charles Wyatt Warren (1908 - 1993)

Charles Wyatt Warren was a 20th Century welsh landscape artist born in Caernarfon. He attended London University after his time at school before beginging a career with Caernarfon County Council. He began painting as a hobby, but became remarkably prolific, producing 20-40 paintings a year. His work focused primarly on the Snowdonian Landscapes and was a founding member of the North Wales Group and the Caernarfon School of Welsh Landscape painters. His earlier works demonstrate a more classical style, often featuring intricate details of Silver Birch trees - highlighting his technical painting ability. Towards the 70’s and 80’s, his work began to evolve to a looser more impressionistic style. He would utilise a palette knife to create sculpted impasto.

Ghislaine Howard (b.1953)

Ghislaine paints the entire range of human experience, the embrace of lovers, the joys and anxieties of parenthood, and the inevitable move towards the frailty of old age. She delights equally in the strength of human contact and the silent eloquence of the single figure, seen in movement or repose. All Ghislaine’s paintings spring from her own experience, mediated by her love of art, past and present. She relishes the physicality and emotional power that comes about when line, form and colour collide, hence the title of her recent publication, written with Michael; Ghislaine Howard: the Human Touch.

Robert Gemmell Hutchison (1855-1936)

Born and educated in Edinburgh, Hutchison began his career as an engraver of seals but, with a love of painting, studied art at the Board of Manufactures School. Influenced by the Dutch School, and John and Thomas Faed (1819-1902 and 1826-1900 respectively), Hutchison’s specialty was painting children and genre scenes in Scottish landscapes, with a distinctive style involving broad brushstrokes and soft, mute colours. A prolific artist, Hutchison exhibited widely around Britain. Hutchison was elected to the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1895, an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1901 and a Member in 1911.
